Chapter 10: The Enemy Inside the Government

Chapter 10: The Enemy Inside the Government

The most dangerous enemies Arthur Miller had ever faced were not the ones holding weapons.

They were the ones holding positions.

A soldier could be identified.

A criminal could be hunted.

A threat could be stopped.

But an enemy sitting behind a government desk, wearing a respected title, protected by laws and reputation...

That enemy could destroy an entire country without firing a single shot.

Three days after Chief Daniel Cross was arrested, Washington changed.

Not publicly.

Not dramatically.

There were no emergency announcements.

No government buildings surrounded by investigators.

No politicians admitting fear.

The most powerful people in the world rarely panicked where ordinary people could see.

They panicked behind closed doors.

Inside a secure government facility beneath Washington, a classified meeting began.

Seven people sat around a long black table.

No cameras.

No recording devices.

No assistants.

Only silence.

At the head of the table sat a man in his late sixties.

Silver hair.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

His name was Adrian Whitmore.

Richard Whitmore's uncle.

The man who had spent decades away from the public eye.

The man whose name appeared nowhere in the Whitmore business records.

"The Miller situation has escalated."

A government official placed several photographs on the table.

Arthur.

Lily.

Evelyn.

Claire.

Adrian studied them.

"Arthur Miller was never supposed to return."

A woman across the table spoke.

"Then why did he?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Because we underestimated one thing."

"What?"

He touched the photograph of Lily.

"Love."

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in that room understood.

Arthur Miller had always been dangerous.

Not because of his training.

Not because of his intelligence.

Because when Arthur cared about someone, he became impossible to control.

"The Cross arrest has created problems."

Another official spoke.

"Public attention is increasing."

Adrian nodded.

"Then reduce it."

"How?"

Adrian looked at him.

"People believe what they are told."

That sentence frightened some people.

Because it revealed the true power of the network.

They did not need to stop every person who searched for the truth.

They only needed to control the story.

Meanwhile, Arthur Miller was discovering something much worse.

The Nightfall file was incomplete.

Inside Claire Bennett's temporary investigation office, documents covered every surface.

Financial records.

Government reports.

Old intelligence files.

Names.

Connections.

Everything led back to one place.

"The government itself."

Lily stared at the documents.

"You mean people inside the government knew?"

Claire nodded.

"Some did more than know."

Arthur looked at her.

"They participated."

The words felt heavier than expected.

Because Arthur had spent his life believing institutions could be corrupted by individuals.

Now he faced a darker reality.

Sometimes the corruption was not a mistake.

Sometimes it was the system.

Evelyn sat quietly nearby.

She had barely spoken since returning.

Arthur understood why.

She was carrying fifteen years of secrets.

Fifteen years of fear.

Fifteen years of watching from the shadows.

Arthur looked at her.

"Who was the first person you discovered?"

Evelyn hesitated.

"Marcus Vale."

The name still hurt.

Claire looked surprised.

"You suspected him?"

"I didn't want to."

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"That's why he was dangerous."

She explained.

Marcus Vale was not just Arthur's commander.

He was his mentor.

He was the person who taught him discipline.

Trust.

Loyalty.

"When everyone doubted Arthur, Marcus believed in him."

Evelyn looked at Arthur.

"He became the person Arthur trusted most."

Arthur said nothing.

Because that was the worst betrayal.

Not when an enemy attacked you.

When someone you loved opened the door for them.

"He recruited me."

Arthur's voice was quiet.

"He trained me."

Claire watched him.

"And he betrayed you."

Arthur looked at the window.

"I don't know yet."

Claire frowned.

"After everything?"

Arthur turned.

"I know what the evidence says."

A pause.

"But I also know Marcus."

Lily looked at him.

"Dad."

"What?"

"Sometimes people become someone else."

Arthur had no answer.

Because his daughter had just said something he needed to hear.

That evening, Arthur received a classified message.

No sender.

No location.

Only coordinates.

And three words.

COME ALONE, ARTHUR.

Claire immediately shook her head.

"No."

Arthur looked at her.

"You don't know what it is."

"I know exactly what it is."

She pointed at the message.

"A trap."

Arthur remained silent.

Evelyn looked at him.

"You can't go."

Arthur looked at his wife.

"I have to."

"No."

Her voice became emotional.

"You always say that."

Arthur stopped.

Because she was right.

Every dangerous moment in their marriage had ended with Arthur saying the same words.

I have to.

Evelyn stepped closer.

"For fifteen years, I watched you sacrifice yourself because you thought pain was your punishment."

Arthur looked away.

"But Lily doesn't need another sacrifice."

A pause.

"She needs a father."

The words hit harder than any command.

For the first time, Arthur considered something different.

Not the mission.

Not revenge.

Family.

But before he could answer, every screen in the room turned on.

A video appeared.

A man sitting in darkness.

Arthur immediately recognized him.

Marcus Vale.

Arthur froze.

"Hello, Arthur."

Lily stepped closer.

"That's him?"

Arthur nodded.

Marcus looked directly into the camera.

"I know you're watching."

A calm smile appeared.

"I know you found the files."

Claire reached for the controls.

But the signal continued.

"Before you decide what you believe, you need to understand something."

Marcus leaned closer.

"The Whitmores are not your enemy."

Arthur's expression changed.

"The government is."

Silence.

Marcus continued.

"You spent fifteen years hunting the wrong people."

"Richard Whitmore was never in control."

"He was following orders."

Arthur stepped toward the screen.

"Why should I believe you?"

Marcus smiled sadly.

"Because Evelyn already knows."

Everyone turned toward Evelyn.

Her face changed.

Arthur noticed.

"You knew?"

Evelyn looked down.

"I suspected."

Marcus continued:

"The person who ordered the destruction of Nightfall..."

A pause.

"Was the Director of National Intelligence himself."

Claire went pale.

"Impossible."

Marcus smiled.

"That's what everyone says before they discover the truth."

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Because if Marcus was telling the truth, the consequences were impossible.

The enemy was not hiding in a corporation.

Not hiding in a mansion.

Not hiding in a criminal organization.

The enemy was inside the government.

Later that night, Arthur stood alone outside.

Claire approached him.

"You believe him."

Arthur did not answer.

"You do."

Arthur looked at the stars.

"When I joined intelligence, I believed I was protecting my country."

A pause.

"But what happens when the people you're protecting it from are wearing the same flag?"

Claire had no answer.

Inside the house, Lily found another message hidden in the old Nightfall files.

Not from Evelyn.

Not from Marcus.

From someone else.

Someone who had been watching.

The message contained only one sentence.

ARTHUR MILLER IS NOT THE ONLY SURVIVOR OF NIGHTFALL.

Lily stared.

Because beneath the message was a name.

A name she had never heard before.

SUBJECT TWO: ALIVE.

And somewhere in Washington, someone deleted another file.

May you like

A file containing the identity of the person who had truly started everything.
