Claire looked at him.

Then a video started.

"Arthur."
Thomas looked directly into the camera.
"I knew you would find this."
Arthur stepped closer.
"Where are you?"
Thomas ignored the question.
"You need to understand something."
"You think the Ghost Network corrupted the mission."
A pause.
"It didn't."
"The mission created the Ghost Network."
Nobody spoke.
Thomas explained.
Nightfall began as a project to identify corruption.
But once they discovered how deep the corruption went, some members believed exposing it would destroy the world.
"They thought humanity couldn't handle the truth."
Arthur frowned.
"So they controlled it."
Thomas nodded.
"They decided order was more important than freedom."
Evelyn whispered:
"They became what they were fighting."
Thomas looked at the camera.
"Exactly."
Arthur watched him.
"You joined them."
Thomas looked down.
"Yes."
The honesty surprised him.
"Why?"
Thomas answered quietly:
"Because I saw what happened when people learned the truth."
He explained.
Countries collapsed.
Markets crashed.
Violence spread.
People died.
"And the Ghost Network stopped it."
Arthur's voice became cold.
"By lying."
Thomas didn't deny it.
"Yes."
A long silence.
"How many people did you sacrifice?"
Arthur asked.
Thomas looked away.
"More than I can remember."
The answer disturbed Arthur more than denial would have.
Because Thomas was not a villain who enjoyed cruelty.

"Where is the leader?"
Claire asked.
Thomas looked at her.
"The leader isn't one person."
He looked back at Arthur.

The screen went black.
Then a final message appeared.

OR DESTROY EVERYTHING.
The computer shut down.
Nobody spoke.
That night, Arthur walked alone through the city.
The world looked normal.
People laughing.
Cars moving.
Families walking.

Lily found him outside.
"You always leave when you're thinking."
Arthur smiled slightly.
"Your mother says that too."
She stood beside him.
"What happened?"
Arthur looked at the city.
"I found the enemy."
Lily waited.
"And?"
Arthur shook his head.
"I don't know if they are enemies."
That answer surprised her.
"They did terrible things."
"Yes."
"They hurt people."
"Yes."
"Then why are you unsure?"
Arthur looked at his daughter.
"Because the most dangerous people aren't the ones who know they are evil."
A pause.
"They're the ones who believe they are saving the world."
Lily understood.
"Dad."
"Yes?"
"What will you do?"
Arthur looked toward the horizon.
For the first time in fifteen years, he didn't think about revenge.
He didn't think about punishment.
He thought about choice.
"I will expose the truth."
Lily nodded.
"But I won't become them."
Inside a hidden facility, Thomas watched the conversation.
A woman stood behind him.
"You still care about him."
Thomas didn't answer.
"You should have killed him years ago."
Thomas looked at the screen.
"No."
"Why?"
A sad smile appeared.
"Because Arthur Miller is the one person the Ghost Network could never control."
The woman frowned.
"Why?"
Thomas answered:
"Because every time they tried to turn him into a weapon..."
A pause.
"...his family reminded him he was human."
The woman looked at the files.
"Then what happens now?"
Thomas closed the folder.
"Now comes the final test."
The screen displayed one name.
PROJECT NIGHTFALL: FINAL CHOICE
And beneath it:
SUBJECT ARTHUR MILLER.
The greatest battle of Arthur's life had finally begun.
