Chapter 6: The Mission That Never Ended

Chapter 6: The Mission That Never Ended
Arthur Miller had spent fifteen years believing one thing.
Operation Nightfall ended the night his team was destroyed.
He believed the mission failed.
He believed the evidence disappeared.
He believed the people responsible won.
Most importantly, he believed Evelyn died because they were too late.
But as he stood inside the Whitmore library holding a file his wife had hidden beneath the floor, Arthur finally understood the truth.
Nightfall never ended.
It only went underground.
The old library remained silent after the shooting.
The bullet hole in the bookshelf stared back at them like a warning.
Someone had been inside the mansion.
Someone had known exactly where Arthur would go.
Someone wanted him to find the file.
That was the part that bothered him the most.
Enemies tried to hide information.
They destroyed evidence.
They erased trails.
They killed witnesses.
But this person had done the opposite.
They had opened the door.
They wanted Arthur to walk through.
Claire Bennett examined the room carefully.
"No cameras."
Arthur looked at her.
"What?"
"The attacker."
She pointed toward the damaged bookshelf.
"If this person was trying to kill us, they had a clean shot."
Arthur understood immediately.
The shooter had missed intentionally.
Claire continued:
"They weren't aiming at you."
Arthur looked down at the black file.
"They were protecting it."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Arthur closed the file.
"We leave."
Claire frowned.
"You're giving up?"
"No."
His expression hardened.
"We stop investigating like they expect."
Outside the mansion, Arthur placed the file inside a secure bag.
Claire watched him.
"You think this is a trap."
"I know it is."
"Then why keep going?"
Arthur looked toward the house.
"Because Lily is already part of this."
That was the truth he could no longer escape.
For fifteen years, Arthur believed distance protected his daughter.
Now he understood.
The enemy did not need him close.
They had reached her anyway.
Back at the hospital, Lily was awake.
She had been waiting.
Arthur knew immediately.
Children always knew when their parents were hiding something.
Even adult children.
Especially adult children.
"You found something."
Arthur stopped.
"You should rest."
Lily gave him a tired smile.
"That's what you say when you don't want to answer."
For a moment, Arthur almost smiled.
Because that was exactly something Evelyn used to say.
He sat beside her.
"We found information about your mother."
Lily looked at him.
"And?"
Arthur hesitated.
"The mission I worked on fifteen years ago..."
He placed the file on the table.
"It never ended."
Lily stared.
"What does that mean?"
"It means everything that happened after your mother's death may have been connected."
"Richard?"
"Possibly."
"The Whitmores?"
"Possibly."
Lily looked frustrated.
"You still don't know."
Arthur shook his head.
"No."
That answer surprised her.
Because for the first time, her father admitted uncertainty.
"I spent my whole life believing I had answers."
Arthur looked at his hands.
"I didn't."
A pause.
"I just had better ways of hiding my questions."
Lily studied him.
"You really loved her."
Arthur looked up.
"Your mother?"
She nodded.
"More than anything."
A painful silence followed.
Then Lily asked:
"Did she know you would blame yourself?"
Arthur looked away.
"Yes."
"How?"
"Because she knew me."
Arthur remembered Evelyn.
Not as a victim.
Not as a mystery.
As a woman who challenged him.
She was the only person who could look at Arthur Miller and see past the reputation.
Past the agent.
Past the dangerous man.
She saw the person underneath.
"Your mother once told me something."
Lily waited.
"She said I was good at saving strangers because strangers couldn't hurt me."
Arthur's voice lowered.
"But family could."
Lily looked down.
"She was right."
Arthur nodded.
"Yes."
At that moment, Arthur's phone rang.
A secure number.
One he had not seen in fifteen years.
His expression changed.
Claire immediately noticed.
"Who is it?"
Arthur didn't answer.
He picked up.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a voice.
Older.
Familiar.
Impossible.
"Arthur."
The phone almost fell from his hand.
Because he knew that voice.
He had heard it in dreams.
In memories.
In nightmares.
"Marcus."
General Marcus Vale.
His mentor.
His commander.
The man who had shaped Arthur Miller into the person he became.
Claire saw his face.
"Who is it?"
Arthur ignored her.
"You're alive."
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
"That's a strange thing for you to say."
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
"Because I thought you were dead."
Marcus replied:
"Everyone thought that."
"Everyone except Evelyn."
Arthur stood.
"What did you do?"
A pause.
Then:
"The same thing you did."
Arthur froze.
"What?"
"Survive."
Lily watched her father's expression change.
She had never seen him afraid before.
Not truly.
Until now.
"Where is my wife?"
The line became silent.
Then Marcus answered:
"Still asking the wrong question after fifteen years."
Arthur's grip tightened.
"Explain."
Marcus sighed.
"Arthur, you need to understand something."
"Nightfall wasn't a mission."
"It was a test."
Arthur felt cold.
"A test for what?"
"To find out who could be trusted."
The hospital room suddenly felt smaller.
Marcus continued:
"You, Evelyn, and the others were never investigating the Whitmores."
Arthur frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
"You were investigating yourselves."
Arthur said nothing.
Because some part of him already feared the answer.
Marcus continued:
"Nightfall was created because someone inside intelligence discovered the government had been compromised."
"Your team was chosen because you were considered loyal."
Arthur whispered:
"And the betrayal?"
Marcus answered:
"It came from someone who knew you better than anyone."
Arthur's heart stopped.
"No."
Marcus continued:
"Arthur..."
"The person who destroyed Nightfall was not a stranger."
A pause.
"The person who betrayed you was someone you loved."
The call ended.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Lily looked at her father.
"Who?"
Arthur stared at the phone.
He did not answer.
Because his mind was fighting against the impossible.
Claire stepped closer.
"Arthur."
His voice was barely audible.
"I don't know."
But he did.
Deep inside.
A name had already appeared.
A name he refused to say.
Evelyn.
Later that night, Arthur returned to his old house.
The place he had abandoned after Evelyn's death.
The place where memories lived like ghosts.
He walked into the bedroom.
Everything remained untouched.
Almost.
On the floor beside the closet was a small wooden box.
He had never seen it before.
Inside was a letter.
His name written on the envelope.
For Arthur.
Open only when Nightfall returns.
His hands shook.
Because Evelyn had written this before she disappeared.
Before everyone believed she died.
He opened it.
The first sentence destroyed everything he thought he knew.
Arthur, if you are reading this, then I failed to convince you before it was too late.
He continued.
You will think I betrayed you.
You will think I chose the mission over our family.
You will be wrong.
Arthur stopped.
A tear fell onto the page.
I left because someone inside Nightfall discovered the truth.
And that person was coming for Lily.
Arthur's heart stopped.
The final sentence was written darker, as if Evelyn had pressed the pen with desperation.
Arthur, I did not leave our daughter.
I was protecting her from you.
The letter slipped from his hand.
Because for fifteen years Arthur believed he was the man who failed to protect his family.
Now he faced a possibility far more painful.
Maybe the greatest danger to Lily...
May you like
had been himself.
