Chapter 11: The Ghost Who Answered Back

Chapter 11: The Ghost Who Answered Back

Arthur Miller had spent fifteen years believing ghosts belonged to the past.

The dead stayed dead.

The missing stayed missing.

The people he lost became memories.

That was how he survived.

Because if he allowed himself to believe that every disappearance had another explanation, every death had another possibility, he would never have been able to move forward.

But Nightfall had changed the rules.

First Evelyn returned.

Then Marcus Vale appeared.

Now another message had arrived.

SUBJECT TWO: ALIVE.

The words remained on Lily's screen.

Nobody spoke.

The room felt colder.

Not because of the temperature.

Because everyone understood what those words meant.

Nightfall had not been a failed mission.

It had been a hidden war.

And there were still survivors.

Claire took the laptop.

"Where did this come from?"

Lily shook her head.

"It appeared inside the archive folder."

Arthur looked at the screen.

"That folder wasn't there before."

"No."

"Someone added it."

Arthur's instincts immediately changed.

For years, he had lived as a man searching for answers.

Now he understood something.

The answers were searching for him too.

Evelyn walked closer.

"Subject Two."

Arthur looked at her.

"You know who it is."

It was not a question.

Evelyn hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

"Lily."

Arthur's daughter looked at him.

"What?"

"There are things your mother never told you."

Lily gave a painful smile.

"Apparently everyone has secrets except me."

The words hurt.

Arthur saw it.

The years of being protected.

The years of being lied to.

The years where adults made decisions about her life without allowing her to choose.

Arthur sat beside her.

"You deserve the truth."

Lily looked at him.

"Do I?"

"Yes."

"Even if it destroys everything?"

Arthur nodded.

"Especially then."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Then she finally spoke.

"Subject Two was not another agent."

Claire frowned.

"Then what was it?"

Evelyn looked at Arthur.

"It was a child."

The room became silent.

Arthur stared.

"What?"

"Nightfall discovered something unusual."

Evelyn continued.

"A program inside the intelligence system was using children from influential families."

Lily looked horrified.

"Children?"

"Not soldiers."

Evelyn shook her head.

"Observers."

She explained.

The network behind Nightfall had created a system where children connected to powerful families were monitored, influenced, and trained to protect the interests of those families.

They were not given weapons.

They were given information.

They were taught loyalty.

They were shaped before they were old enough to understand what was happening.

Arthur's expression darkened.

"And Subject Two?"

Evelyn looked at Lily.

"It was you."

The silence that followed felt endless.

Lily stepped backward.

"No."

Arthur immediately stood.

"No."

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't know at first."

Arthur looked at her.

"Explain."

"Nightfall was studying the children of powerful families."

Evelyn's voice shook.

"Because they believed the future belonged to them."

Lily stared.

"My family wasn't powerful."

Arthur looked at her.

"You were my daughter."

Evelyn nodded.

"Exactly."

Arthur understood.

The enemy did not care about Lily because she was connected to the Whitmores.

They cared because she was connected to him.

"You were the experiment."

Lily whispered.

Evelyn nodded.

"But not because of anything you did."

Lily laughed bitterly.

"That's supposed to make me feel better?"

Arthur stepped forward.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

"It isn't."

His voice was quiet.

"But I need you to hear this."

He looked directly at Lily.

"They used you because they were afraid of what you could become."

Lily shook her head.

"I'm not special."

Arthur smiled sadly.

"You survived them."

Before anyone could respond, the lights flickered.

Then every device in the room shut down.

Claire immediately reached for her equipment.

"Someone breached the system."

Arthur looked around.

"How?"

A voice came from the speakers.

"Because you never changed your passwords, Arthur."

Everyone froze.

A man's voice.

Young.

Calm.

Confident.

Arthur looked at the speakers.

"Who is this?"

A laugh.

"Really?"

A pause.

"You don't recognize me?"

A screen turned on.

A face appeared.

A young man in his early thirties.

Dark hair.

Sharp eyes.

A scar across his eyebrow.

Arthur stared.

Because the face was familiar.

Not from memory.

From the past.

"No."

Arthur whispered.

Lily looked at him.

"Dad?"

Arthur stepped closer.

"Impossible."

The young man smiled.

"Hello, Arthur."

Arthur's hands tightened.

Because fifteen years earlier, this man had died.

"Thomas."

Claire looked confused.

"Who is Thomas?"

Arthur did not answer.

The man on the screen smiled.

"I was wondering how long it would take you."

Arthur's voice became cold.

"You were killed."

"No."

Thomas replied.

"I was erased."

The room went silent.

Thomas continued:

"Nightfall had three survivors."

Arthur frowned.

"Three?"

"Yes."

"Evelyn."

A pause.

"Marcus."

Another pause.

"And me."

Arthur looked at Evelyn.

"You knew?"

She looked away.

"I thought he was dead."

Thomas laughed softly.

"Everyone did."

Arthur stepped toward the screen.

"Why contact us now?"

Thomas's expression changed.

Because for the first time, he looked afraid.

"Because they know I'm alive."

Claire immediately understood.

"Who?"

Thomas looked directly at Arthur.

"The people who created Nightfall."

Arthur's jaw tightened.

"You mean the government?"

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"The government was infiltrated."

Everyone listened.

"The people behind Nightfall existed before governments."

Thomas continued.

"They don't control countries."

"They control the people who control countries."

Arthur looked at the screen.

"Why tell me?"

Thomas smiled.

"Because you are the last person who can stop them."

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

"What?"

"You want me to become what I was before."

Thomas became quiet.

Arthur continued:

"You want me angry."

"You want me hunting."

"You want me alone."

For the first time, Thomas looked surprised.

Arthur looked toward Lily.

"But I'm not that man anymore."

The words mattered.

Because fifteen years ago, Arthur would have accepted the mission.

He would have sacrificed himself.

He would have disappeared.

Now he had something to lose.

And something worth protecting.

Thomas nodded slowly.

"That's why Evelyn chose you."

Arthur froze.

"What?"

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

"She wasn't hiding from you."

"She was waiting for you to become someone who could win."

The connection suddenly cut.

The room returned to darkness.

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily asked:

"Who was he?"

Arthur stared at the blank screen.

"Someone I failed."

Evelyn touched his arm.

"No."

Arthur looked at her.

"He was someone you tried to save."

Outside, far away, inside a hidden government facility, a man watched the same conversation.

The screen displayed:

SUBJECT TWO CONTACT CONFIRMED.

ARTHUR MILLER REACTIVATED.

The man deleted the file.

Then opened another.

FINAL PROTOCOL: FAMILY

He smiled.

"Let's see how much love can survive."

Because the enemy had discovered Arthur's greatest weakness.

His daughter.

His family.

His heart.

And now they planned to use the very thing that made him human...

May you like

against him.
