CHAPTER 3 — The Woman Who Survived the Mountain

CHAPTER 3 — The Woman Who Survived the Mountain

The mountain had taken everything from Claire Bennett.

Her memories.

Her identity.

Her family.

But it had not taken her life.

For two years, the world believed Claire Bennett was dead.

Her husband mourned her.

Her daughter grew up without her.

Her name became a photograph on a wall.

A memory people spoke about in the past tense.

But Claire was still alive.

And slowly...

painfully...

she was coming back.

The first memory returned on a rainy Tuesday morning.

Not a complete memory.

Just a sound.

A little girl laughing.

A tiny voice calling:

"Mommy!"

Claire woke up crying.

She didn't know why.

She didn't know who the child was.

But her heart knew.

Somewhere inside her broken mind...

someone was waiting for her.

The doctors had called it a miracle.

After the accident, Claire was found several miles away from the wreckage.

A rescue worker discovered her unconscious near the edge of the mountain.

Alive.

Barely.

She had suffered severe injuries.

A fractured shoulder.

A head injury.

Memory loss.

The doctors believed the trauma had caused her brain to protect itself.

They told her:

"Your memories may return slowly."

Or they may never return.

For two years, Claire lived under another name.

The woman who found her gave her a temporary identity.

Clara Hayes.

A name on medical records.

A name she never felt belonged to her.

Because every time someone called her Clara...

something inside her whispered:

That isn't you.

Then came the photograph.

A small photograph hidden inside an old jacket recovered from the accident.

Nobody knew why Claire kept it.

Nobody knew who the people were.

But when Claire saw it...

everything changed.

A man.

A woman.

A little girl.

Three people smiling.

A family.

Her fingers trembled.

"Who are they?"

The doctor asked gently.

Claire stared.

"I don't know."

But tears fell anyway.

Because she did know.

Somewhere deep inside.

That night, she dreamed.

Not like other dreams.

Like memories.

She saw a kitchen.

A little girl sitting on the counter.

Tiny hands covered in flour.

"Mommy, I made cookies."

Claire laughed.

"They're terrible."

The little girl gasped.

"No they're not."

"They're the best cookies ever."

The child crossed her arms.

"Because I made them."

Claire woke up crying.

Because she finally understood.

The little girl was hers.

"Lily."

The name escaped her lips.

The next day, she searched.

Not online.

Not at first.

She was afraid.

Afraid of discovering the truth.

Afraid the little girl belonged to someone else.

Afraid she had imagined everything.

But then she typed the name.

Lily Bennett.

The screen loaded.

And Claire stopped breathing.

There she was.

A photograph from a charity event.

A beautiful little girl with blonde hair.

Six years old.

Smiling beside Alexander Bennett.

Her husband.

Claire covered her mouth.

Because suddenly everything returned.

Not everything.

But enough.

Alexander.

Their wedding.

Their first home.

The night Lily was born.

Holding her daughter for the first time.

Alexander crying because he was afraid he would drop the baby.

Claire laughing at him.

"You run a billion-dollar company, but you're scared of a three-kilogram baby?"

His answer.

"I can negotiate with adults."

A pause.

"I can't negotiate with something this perfect."

Claire cried.

She cried for the life she lost.

For the years stolen from her.

For the daughter who grew older without her.

Then she saw another picture.

Alexander.

Lily.

And Rebecca Whitmore.

Claire froze.

The woman standing beside her husband.

The woman smiling beside her daughter.

The woman replacing her.

Rebecca.

The name triggered something.

Not a memory.

A feeling.

Danger.

Claire closed the laptop.

Her hands were shaking.

"No."

She whispered.

"My daughter."

Two years earlier...

The night before the accident.

Claire remembered.

She and Alexander had argued.

Not about love.

About Rebecca.

Rebecca had been Alexander's business associate.

Someone who had always been around.

Someone who always knew exactly what to say.

Claire remembered the conversation.

"She's too close."

Claire had said.

Alexander frowned.

"Rebecca works with me."

"She wants more than work."

"Claire."

"I know women."

A pause.

"I know the way she looks at you."

Alexander had sighed.

"You're tired."

Those words hurt.

Because Claire wasn't jealous.

She was afraid.

The next day, her brakes failed.

At the time, everyone believed it was bad luck.

A mechanical failure.

A tragic accident.

But now...

Claire remembered something.

The night before the crash.

She had seen Rebecca near her car.

Standing beside it.

Talking to someone.

Claire grabbed the edge of the table.

Her heart raced.

"No..."

She didn't want to believe it.

But her mind was putting pieces together.

Rebecca wasn't just a woman who entered her family's life after she disappeared.

Rebecca may have been the reason she disappeared.

Meanwhile, at the Bennett mansion...

Alexander sat across from his investigator.

The man's face was serious.

"Sir, I found something."

Alexander looked up.

"What?"

The investigator placed a folder on the table.

"Rebecca Whitmore changed her story about her background several times."

Alexander opened it.

"She lied about where she worked."

Another page.

"She lied about previous relationships."

Another page.

"And there's more."

Alexander's expression hardened.

"What?"

The investigator hesitated.

"Two days before your wife's accident..."

He placed another document down.

"Rebecca accessed information about your wife's vehicle."

Silence.

Alexander stared.

"How?"

"She had access through Bennett International's employee system."

His hands tightened.

At that exact moment...

Rebecca stood in her bedroom.

She held a phone to her ear.

"Are you sure?"

A man's voice answered.

"Yes."

"Claire Bennett is alive."

Rebecca stopped breathing.

The perfect smile disappeared.

The woman who had spent two years building a new life...

was about to lose everything.

"Where is she?"

The man hesitated.

"She's coming back."

Rebecca's fingers tightened around the phone.

"No."

A pause.

"She can't."

Because Rebecca knew the truth.

If Claire returned...

Lily would remember.

Alexander would know.

And everything Rebecca had built would collapse.

That night, Claire packed one small suitcase.

She looked around the room where she had lived for two years.

The room of a woman who didn't know who she was.

Then she looked at the photograph of Lily.

Her daughter.

The child she had dreamed about every night.

"I’m coming home."

She whispered.

But Claire did not know something.

The home she was returning to...

was no longer the same.

Her husband had moved on.

Her daughter was afraid.

And the woman who stole her place...

May you like

already knew she was coming.
