CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Behind the Broken Brakes

CHAPTER 4 — The Secret Behind the Broken Brakes

For two years, everyone called it an accident.

A terrible accident.

A moment of bad luck on a dangerous mountain road.

A storm.

A sharp turn.

A failed brake system.

A woman lost forever.

That was the story everyone believed.

But Claire Bennett remembered something nobody else did.

She remembered the sound.

The sound of her brakes failing.

And the terrifying certainty that something was wrong.

The first thing Claire did after deciding to return home was not pack clothes.

It was not call Alexander.

It was not tell Lily she was alive.

The first thing she did was find the truth.

Because Claire knew something important.

Memory could be damaged.

Evidence could not.

The old investigation file arrived three days later.

A private investigator had helped her obtain copies under her temporary identity.

Claire sat alone in a small apartment.

The same apartment where she had spent two years trying to understand herself.

A cup of untouched tea sat beside her.

The file rested in front of her.

BENNETT VEHICLE ACCIDENT REPORT

Her hands shook as she opened it.

The first pages were familiar.

Weather conditions.

Road conditions.

Emergency response.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing suspicious.

Until she reached the mechanical report.

Claire stopped.

She read the sentence again.

Then again.

Brake system failure caused by severe hydraulic damage.

Her breathing slowed.

Severe damage.

Not failure.

Damage.

Someone had done something.

She continued reading.

The vehicle had been inspected three days before the accident.

The brakes had passed.

No problems.

No warnings.

No repairs needed.

Then suddenly...

failure.

Claire closed her eyes.

A memory flashed.

Her car in the driveway.

Rebecca standing near it.

A phone in her hand.

A strange expression.

Claire stood quickly.

The chair moved backward.

"No."

She whispered.

Because remembering was one thing.

Accepting was another.

Rebecca had always been dangerous.

But murder?

Claire needed proof.

Not suspicion.

Not anger.

Proof.

She contacted the investigator again.

"I need everything about the vehicle."

The man hesitated.

"Mrs. Bennett—"

She froze.

Nobody had called her that in two years.

"Please," she corrected softly.

"Just Claire."

The investigator continued.

"We found something unusual."

Her heart tightened.

"What?"

"The original brake report was modified."

Claire stared.

"Modified?"

"Yes."

"Someone changed the wording."

A pause.

"The first report said there were signs of intentional damage."

The room went silent.

Claire felt cold.

"What happened to that report?"

"It disappeared."

Someone had erased the truth.

"But not completely."

The investigator continued.

"There was a backup copy."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Where?"

"Archived server."

"Can you access it?"

"Already did."

A pause.

"And Claire..."

His voice became serious.

"You should see who accessed the file before it disappeared."

The answer came ten minutes later.

A name.

A name Claire already knew.

Rebecca Whitmore.

Claire stared at the screen.

Her hands were no longer shaking.

They were still.

Because anger was replacing fear.

Rebecca didn't just take her husband.

She didn't just try to replace her as Lily's mother.

She had taken two years.

Two years of bedtime stories.

Two years of birthdays.

Two years of watching Lily grow.

Two years that Claire would never get back.

Meanwhile, inside the Bennett mansion...

Rebecca was doing what she did best.

Pretending.

"I don't understand why Alexander is investigating me."

She sat on the sofa, looking hurt.

"I have done nothing but support this family."

Alexander stood across from her.

For the first time in months...

he did not immediately comfort her.

That scared Rebecca.

"Rebecca."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"I need you to answer something."

She smiled carefully.

"Of course."

"Why did you access information about Claire's car before the accident?"

The room froze.

Only for a second.

But Alexander saw it.

The tiny pause.

The calculation.

The moment she searched for a lie.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Don't."

His voice hardened.

"Not this time."

Rebecca looked wounded.

"Alexander, after everything I've done for you..."

"There it is."

Her expression changed.

"What?"

"Everything is always about what you've done for me."

He stepped closer.

"What about Lily?"

Rebecca's face tightened.

"I love Lily."

"Then why is she afraid of you?"

Silence.

Rebecca recovered quickly.

"Because she misses her mother."

The same answer.

Always the same answer.

But Alexander no longer believed it.

That night, he entered Lily's room.

She was asleep.

A small stuffed rabbit was held tightly against her chest.

The same rabbit Claire gave her.

Alexander sat beside her.

"I'm sorry."

He whispered.

The words hurt.

Because he realized he wasn't only apologizing for Rebecca.

He was apologizing for himself.

He had been there physically.

But he had not seen.

A small movement.

Lily opened her eyes.

"Daddy?"

"Hey, sweetheart."

She looked scared.

Not sleepy.

Scared.

"Is Rebecca mad?"

Alexander's heart broke.

"No."

A pause.

"Why would you think that?"

Lily looked down.

"Because when people make Rebecca angry..."

Her voice became smaller.

"Bad things happen."

Alexander felt his blood run cold.

"What bad things?"

Lily immediately shook her head.

"Nothing."

"Lily."

"No."

The fear returned.

"Please don't ask."

Those words destroyed the last excuse Alexander had.

Children didn't fear questions.

Children feared consequences.

Across the city...

Claire stood outside the Bennett mansion.

She had arrived without telling anyone.

She wanted to see Lily.

Even if only from a distance.

The lights were on.

The house looked exactly the same.

But somehow...

it felt like someone else's home.

Then she saw her.

Through the window.

A little girl sitting alone.

Her daughter.

Lily.

Older.

Different.

But still hers.

Claire covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

"My baby."

The words broke apart.

Then Lily suddenly looked toward the window.

As if she felt something.

Their eyes almost met.

For one impossible second...

mother and daughter were separated only by glass.

Claire stepped forward.

But before she could move...

A hand grabbed her arm.

She turned.

A man in a dark coat stood behind her.

"Claire Bennett?"

Her heart stopped.

"Who are you?"

The man looked toward the mansion.

Then back at her.

"I was the person who investigated your accident."

A pause.

"And I know who tried to kill you."

Claire froze.

"Who?"

The man's face became serious.

"Before I tell you..."

"You need to understand something."

"What?"

He lowered his voice.

"Rebecca Whitmore didn't act alone."

Inside the mansion...

Rebecca stood by the window.

Watching the same street.

Watching the same darkness.

And she smiled.

May you like

Because Claire was not the only person who had secrets.
