CHAPTER 8 — The Woman Rebecca Tried to Erase

CHAPTER 8 — The Woman Rebecca Tried to Erase

Rebecca Whitmore had spent two years creating a story.

A story where Claire Bennett was gone.

A story where Alexander was a grieving husband who needed someone new.

A story where Lily was a lonely child who needed another mother.

A story where Rebecca was the woman who saved them.

But stories built on lies had one weakness.

They could be destroyed by the truth.

And Claire Bennett had finally returned with the truth.

The first thing Rebecca did after sending the message was make coffee.

Not because she wanted it.

Because routine calmed her.

She had always believed emotions were weaknesses.

Fear.

Anger.

Guilt.

Those things belonged to people who couldn't control situations.

Rebecca controlled situations.

At least...

she used to.

She stood in front of the mirror.

Her reflection looked perfect.

The same woman everyone trusted.

The same woman Alexander once called "the strongest person I know."

But now she saw something different.

A woman standing on the edge of losing everything.

"No."

She whispered.

"I didn't work this hard to lose."

She picked up her phone.

The first call was to her lawyer.

"Prepare everything."

The lawyer paused.

"Everything for what?"

Rebecca looked toward the hallway.

Toward Claire's room.

"To prove Claire Bennett is unstable."

Meanwhile, Claire sat across from Alexander in his office.

The room felt strange.

She had spent years imagining returning here.

She imagined warmth.

She imagined relief.

Instead...

there was distance.

Two people who loved each other.

But two years of separation stood between them.

Alexander placed a file on the desk.

"I need to show you something."

Claire looked down.

"What is it?"

"Rebecca's investigation."

Her expression changed.

"You investigated her?"

"I should have done it sooner."

The regret in his voice was obvious.

Claire didn't answer.

Because anger was complicated.

She was angry.

But she also knew Alexander had been hurt too.

The file opened.

Inside were records.

Financial transfers.

Communication logs.

Access reports.

Claire read silently.

Then she stopped.

"She accessed my car records."

Alexander nodded.

"Before the accident."

Claire looked up.

"I remembered something."

"What?"

"The night before."

She swallowed.

"Rebecca was near my car."

Alexander's face changed.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Claire gave a sad smile.

"I tried."

The words hurt him.

Because he remembered.

He remembered dismissing her concerns.

"You were tired."

"You were stressed."

"You're imagining things."

Every sentence returned like a punishment.

"I didn't believe you."

Alexander whispered.

Claire looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"You believed what was easier."

The truth hurt.

Because it was true.

Before Alexander could respond...

The office door opened.

Rebecca entered.

Perfect timing.

As always.

"I didn't realize you were busy."

Her eyes moved between them.

Then she smiled.

"I just wanted to check on everyone."

Claire almost laughed.

Everyone.

That was Rebecca's favorite word.

A way to hide that she only cared about herself.

Alexander stood.

"We need to talk."

Rebecca looked concerned.

"About?"

"About Claire."

Rebecca's face softened.

"Alexander..."

She lowered her voice.

"I understand you're emotional."

Claire's eyes narrowed.

There it was.

The first attack.

Not direct.

Carefully hidden.

"Emotional?"

Alexander repeated.

Rebecca nodded.

"She has been through trauma."

She looked at Claire.

"I can't imagine what two years away from reality does to someone."

Claire stared.

"Are you saying I'm lying?"

Rebecca sighed.

"I'm saying you may believe things that aren't true."

There it was.

Rebecca wasn't denying.

She was planting doubt.

Alexander looked between them.

And for the first time...

he saw the pattern.

Every accusation from Rebecca came wrapped in concern.

Every cruelty came disguised as kindness.

Claire stood.

"Let's stop pretending."

Rebecca looked surprised.

"Excuse me?"

"You know I survived."

Silence.

Rebecca's expression froze.

"You knew before Alexander."

A tiny reaction.

But enough.

Alexander saw it.

"Rebecca?"

She recovered quickly.

"That's absurd."

Claire stepped closer.

"You knew."

Her voice remained calm.

"And you were afraid."

Rebecca laughed.

"Afraid of what?"

Claire looked directly into her eyes.

"Me."

The room went silent.

For two years, Rebecca had controlled every conversation.

But Claire was different.

The woman who stood there was not the woman who drove away in that car.

The accident had taken pieces of her.

But it had also removed her fear.

Rebecca's smile disappeared.

"You don't know what you're doing."

Claire answered quietly:

"I know exactly what I'm doing."

The door opened again.

Lily stood there.

Nobody noticed her at first.

Until she spoke.

"Mommy?"

Everyone turned.

Claire's heart stopped.

Because Lily was looking at her.

Not Rebecca.

"Can I sit with you?"

The question was small.

But the meaning was enormous.

Claire knelt immediately.

"Always."

Lily walked forward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then she sat beside her.

Rebecca watched.

And something inside her cracked.

Because this was the moment she feared most.

Lily choosing Claire.

"You don't understand."

Rebecca whispered.

Everyone looked at her.

She smiled sadly.

"I have been here for her."

Claire looked up.

"You were here."

A pause.

"But you weren't her mother."

Rebecca's face hardened.

For the first time...

she dropped the mask.

"You think you can just come back and take everything?"

Lily flinched.

Alexander noticed.

Claire stood slowly.

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"I am not taking anything."

She looked at Lily.

"I am coming back for what was always mine."

Rebecca stepped closer.

"You lost your place."

Claire's eyes became cold.

"No."

A pause.

"You tried to erase me."

The words hit harder than a scream.

Because they were true.

That evening, Rebecca met secretly with the man who had helped her.

The same man connected to the accident.

"We need a new plan."

He looked at her.

"You can't control Claire anymore."

Rebecca's expression darkened.

"Then we destroy her."

Back at the mansion...

Claire sat beside Lily's bed.

The little girl was almost asleep.

"Mommy?"

"Yes?"

"Are you really staying?"

Claire held her hand.

"I promise."

Lily looked at her.

"People who promise sometimes leave."

The sentence broke Claire.

Because a six-year-old child should not think promises expire.

Claire kissed her forehead.

"I am not leaving."

A pause.

"I came back from the dead."

She smiled sadly.

"Nothing is making me leave again."

Outside the bedroom...

Alexander stood silently.

He had heard everything.

And he finally understood.

The woman he thought had saved his family...

had been destroying it.

And the woman he thought he lost forever...

was the one person who never stopped fighting to return.

But Rebecca was not finished.

Not even close.

Because tomorrow morning...

the world would hear a new story.

A story where Claire Bennett was not the victim.

May you like

But the villain.
