CHAPTER 6 — The Mother Standing Outside the Door

CHAPTER 6 — The Mother Standing Outside the Door

For two years, Claire Bennett dreamed about one moment.

Opening the front door of her home.

Walking inside.

Hearing her daughter's footsteps.

Holding Lily again.

But when the moment finally arrived...

Claire discovered something she never expected.

Coming home was not the same as being welcomed back.

The Bennett mansion looked exactly the same.

The white stone walls.

The tall windows.

The garden where Lily used to chase butterflies.

The small wooden bench beneath the old oak tree where Claire and Alexander would sit after dinner.

Everything was still there.

But everything felt different.

Because Claire was no longer the woman who left.

And the people inside were no longer the people she remembered.

She stood outside the front door.

Her hand hovered over the bell.

She could hear voices inside.

Alexander.

Lily.

Rebecca.

The sound hurt more than she expected.

Because for two years, Claire had imagined her family waiting.

She imagined Lily running into her arms.

She imagined Alexander crying and holding her like he would never let go.

She imagined the missing years disappearing in one moment.

But reality was colder.

Two years was a long time.

Children changed.

People changed.

Life moved forward even when someone was left behind.

Claire lowered her hand.

For the first time since recovering her memories...

she was afraid.

Not of Rebecca.

Not of Alexander.

Of Lily.

What if her daughter didn't remember her?

What if Lily had learned to live without her?

What if Claire was only a stranger carrying the memories of a mother?

The door opened before she could knock.

A young woman stood there.

Not Rebecca.

Someone else.

Her expression changed the moment she saw Claire.

The woman dropped the stack of papers in her hand.

"No..."

Claire froze.

The woman stared.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"Mrs. Bennett?"

Claire swallowed.

"Who are you?"

The woman covered her mouth.

"My name is Evelyn Carter."

The name meant nothing to Claire.

But the emotion on Evelyn's face did.

"You really are alive."

Claire looked confused.

"You know me?"

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"I knew you before everyone thought they lost you."

The words broke something inside Claire.

Someone remembered.

Someone knew she existed.

"Evelyn..."

Claire whispered.

"Where is Lily?"

The older woman's face changed.

And Claire noticed immediately.

A mother always noticed.

"What happened?"

Evelyn looked toward the house.

Then back at Claire.

"She needs you."

Those four words hurt more than anything.

Because they meant Lily had been waiting.

Before Evelyn could say more, footsteps approached.

"Who is at the door?"

Rebecca.

Claire turned.

And for a moment...

the two women simply stared at each other.

Rebecca had imagined this moment.

Many times.

But never like this.

She imagined Claire returning broken.

Weak.

Confused.

She never imagined Claire standing there with clear eyes.

With memories.

With the one thing Rebecca could never steal.

A mother's love.

Rebecca recovered first.

"Claire."

Her voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

Anyone watching would think they were old friends.

But Claire saw the fear hidden beneath the smile.

"You knew I was alive?"

Claire asked.

Rebecca's expression didn't change.

"I just found out."

A lie.

Claire knew immediately.

She didn't know how.

She simply knew.

"Where is my daughter?"

Rebecca smiled.

"Your daughter?"

The words were soft.

But cruel.

Claire felt her chest tighten.

Rebecca stepped closer.

"Lily has been through a lot."

A pause.

"She doesn't need confusion."

The sentence was carefully chosen.

Not a threat.

Not an insult.

Something worse.

A suggestion.

That Claire was the problem.

"My daughter lost her mother."

Rebecca continued.

"She doesn't need someone pretending to be her mother now."

Claire stared.

For two years, she had imagined revenge.

She imagined anger.

She imagined screaming.

But standing there...

looking at the woman who had taken her place...

Claire felt something stronger.

Certainty.

"You don't get to decide that."

Rebecca's smile weakened.

Then a small voice came from the staircase.

"Mom?"

Everyone froze.

Claire turned.

And there she was.

Lily.

Six years old.

A little taller.

A little thinner.

Her hair longer.

But Claire knew her instantly.

Because a mother does not need two years of memories.

A mother knows her child.

Lily stared.

She didn't move.

She didn't speak.

Her eyes searched Claire's face.

Like she was looking for proof.

Claire covered her mouth.

"My baby."

The words came out broken.

Lily's hand tightened around the railing.

She wanted to run.

Every part of her wanted to.

But fear held her still.

Because Rebecca had spent months teaching her something.

Don't trust.

Don't ask.

Don't remember.

"Who is she?"

Lily whispered.

Claire's heart shattered.

"I'm your mommy."

Silence.

Rebecca immediately stepped in.

"Lily, sweetheart, go upstairs."

But Lily didn't move.

She was looking at Claire.

Not Rebecca.

"I know that voice."

Everyone froze.

Claire's tears fell.

"What?"

Lily touched her own chest.

"I don't know why..."

A pause.

"But I know that voice."

A memory flickered.

A woman singing.

A bedtime story.

A kiss on her forehead.

A promise.

Mommy always comes back.

Rebecca's face changed.

Only for a second.

But Claire saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

Alexander arrived home twenty minutes later.

He had been driving too fast.

He had received Claire's call.

He had spent the entire drive trying to understand how impossible things could become real.

His wife was alive.

His daughter had a mother.

Everything he thought he knew had changed.

When he entered the house...

he saw three people standing in the living room.

Rebecca.

Lily.

And Claire.

He stopped breathing.

Years disappeared.

The woman he buried was standing in front of him.

Older.

Different.

But still Claire.

"Alexander."

Her voice broke.

His eyes filled immediately.

"Claire..."

He said her name like a prayer.

For one moment...

Rebecca disappeared.

The lies disappeared.

The anger disappeared.

There was only a husband seeing his wife alive.

Then Lily moved.

Slowly.

She walked toward Claire.

One step.

Two steps.

Then stopped.

Her face was full of confusion.

"Are you really my mommy?"

Claire fell to her knees.

Because she didn't care about anything else.

Not Rebecca.

Not the past.

Not the future.

Only Lily.

"Yes."

Her voice broke.

"I am."

Lily stared.

Then whispered:

"Why didn't you come home?"

The question destroyed Claire.

Because there was no answer a child should have to hear.

"I tried."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I tried so hard."

Lily looked at Rebecca.

Then at Alexander.

Then back at Claire.

And finally...

she did something Rebecca never expected.

She reached forward.

And touched Claire's hand.

Just a small touch.

But enough.

Enough for Claire to know her daughter was still there.

Rebecca watched silently.

And understood something terrifying.

She could lie to Alexander.

She could manipulate adults.

She could create stories.

But she could not erase the bond between a mother and child.

That night, after everyone went to sleep...

Rebecca stood alone in her room.

Her phone was pressed against her ear.

"We have a problem."

The voice on the other end answered.

"What problem?"

Rebecca looked toward Claire's bedroom door.

"Claire Bennett is alive."

Silence.

Then the voice became colder.

"Then finish what you started."

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Because she knew exactly what that meant.

Two years ago, Claire survived the mountain.

This time...

May you like

they would make sure she didn't survive coming home.
