CHAPTER 1 – The Lullaby Only She Knew

CHAPTER 1 – The Lullaby Only She Knew

The room was silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that came before something broke.

Andrew Whitmore stood in the doorway of the dining room, unable to move.

The expensive crystal chandelier above him continued to shine.

The silver plates remained untouched.

The candles flickered calmly.

But nothing about the scene in front of him felt normal.

His two sons were on the floor.

Holding onto a maid.

Not standing near her.

Not asking for comfort.

Holding her like she was the only person in the world who could keep them safe.

Seven-year-old Noah had his arms wrapped around Clara's shoulders.

Five-year-old Ethan had buried his face against her side, his tiny fingers gripping her black-and-white uniform.

And Clara Bennett...

The woman who had worked in his house for almost a year...

Was crying like her heart had been ripped apart.

Andrew's first emotion had been anger.

A powerful, overwhelming anger.

Because the words had cut deeper than anything he expected.

"She's more like mommy."

His son's voice kept repeating in his mind.

Not because it was impossible.

Because it was impossible to ignore.

"Why are my sons calling you mommy?"

The question came out colder than he intended.

Clara looked up.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

For a moment, Andrew expected an explanation.

A lie.

An excuse.

Anything.

But Clara only looked at him with an expression that confused him.

Pain.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Pain.

Like he had just wounded her with those words.

Before she could speak, Victoria Laurent stepped forward.

Her blue silk dress moved elegantly across the marble floor.

Everything about her was perfect.

Perfect hair.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect smile.

The kind of perfection Andrew once admired.

Now...

It made him uncomfortable.

"Andrew, please."

She touched his arm.

"You're misunderstanding."

Her voice was soft.

Careful.

"She's been here for months. She's gotten too attached to the boys."

Andrew looked at her.

"Attached?"

Victoria nodded quickly.

"Children become confused when someone spends too much time with them."

She looked at Clara.

"Especially someone in her position."

The words were polite.

But the meaning was clear.

Someone like her.

A maid.

Noah suddenly stood.

His small body was shaking.

"She's not lying!"

Everyone looked at him.

Noah wiped his tears angrily.

"Clara never said she was Mommy."

A pause.

"She didn't have to."

Andrew frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Noah looked at Clara.

Then back at his father.

"Because Mommy felt like her."

Andrew felt something tighten in his chest.

Ethan slowly lifted his head.

"The song."

Andrew froze.

"What song?"

The little boy looked confused.

"The bedtime song."

Noah whispered:

"The one Mommy sang."

Andrew stopped breathing.

Because there was only one bedtime song.

One nobody else knew.

Not the nanny.

Not the house staff.

Not even Victoria.

Only Andrew.

And his wife.

The woman he buried three years ago.

Clara covered her mouth.

Tears fell silently down her face.

"I shouldn't have..."

Her voice cracked.

"I shouldn't have stayed."

Andrew stared at her.

"What shouldn't you have done?"

Clara shook her head.

"Nothing."

"Please."

"I'll leave."

She tried to stand.

Immediately, both boys grabbed her.

"No!"

Noah's voice broke.

"Don't go."

Ethan began crying again.

"Everybody leaves."

That sentence hit Andrew harder than he expected.

Because it was true.

Their mother left.

Their grandfather died.

Their home changed.

Everyone they loved disappeared.

And now these children were terrified it would happen again.

Andrew looked at Clara.

For the first time, he truly saw her.

Not as an employee.

Not as someone who worked in his house.

But as someone his sons trusted more than almost anyone.

Then he noticed it.

Her wrist.

A small scar.

Almost hidden beneath her sleeve.

Andrew's entire body went cold.

Because he knew that scar.

His wife had one.

The night of the fire.

She burned her wrist while trying to save the children.

He remembered holding her hand in the hospital.

Remembered kissing that scar.

Remembered promising:

"I will always find you."

But she died.

Didn't she?

"Where did you get that scar?"

Andrew's voice changed.

Everyone noticed.

Victoria's expression shifted.

Only for a second.

But Andrew saw it.

Fear.

Clara immediately pulled her sleeve down.

"It's nothing."

"Answer me."

The room became tense.

Victoria stepped between them.

"Andrew, this is ridiculous."

"She's a maid."

Andrew looked at her.

"Stop saying that."

The sharpness in his voice surprised everyone.

Especially Victoria.

Andrew looked back at Clara.

"Sing the song."

Clara's eyes widened.

"What?"

"The lullaby."

Her face changed.

"Please don't ask me."

Andrew stepped closer.

His voice became softer.

Almost desperate.

"Finish it."

Clara looked at the boys.

Noah was crying quietly.

Ethan held onto her hand.

Then she closed her eyes.

And sang.

Her voice was broken.

Weak.

But familiar.

"When the moon forgets the morning..."

Andrew's heart stopped.

The first line.

Exactly.

"When the stars fall from the sky..."

His hands began shaking.

Nobody knew those words.

Nobody.

Clara continued.

"Hold my hand and don't be frightened..."

The boys joined softly.

Because they remembered.

Then came the final line.

The line Andrew had not heard in three years.

The line only one person knew.

Clara whispered:

"Because a mother's love will always find you..."

Andrew stepped backward.

The room disappeared.

The voices disappeared.

All he could hear was his own heartbeat.

Because that was the line.

The line his wife always changed.

The line she sang only to their children.

The line she whispered to Andrew on the night before the fire.

He looked at Clara.

Really looked.

The way she tilted her head.

The way she held the boys.

The way she protected them before herself.

"No."

Andrew whispered.

"No, that is impossible."

Victoria immediately grabbed his arm.

"Andrew."

Her voice was suddenly nervous.

"You need to calm down."

But Andrew pulled away.

Slowly.

"Who taught you that song?"

Clara did not answer.

"Who taught you?"

His voice was louder now.

Tears rolled down Clara's face.

"I didn't learn it."

A pause.

"I remembered it."

The air left Andrew's lungs.

Victoria went pale.

"You don't know what you're saying."

Clara looked at her.

And for the first time...

Andrew saw something unexpected.

Not fear.

Anger.

Deep, painful anger.

"I know exactly what I'm saying."

Clara whispered.

"I lost everything because of that night."

Andrew froze.

"What night?"

Clara looked at him.

The sadness in her eyes almost destroyed him.

"The night your wife died."

Nobody moved.

Then Clara said the words that shattered Andrew's world.

"Because I was there."

The chandelier lights flickered.

The boys stopped crying.

Victoria's face lost all color.

Andrew stared at the maid standing in front of him.

The woman who knew his wife's song.

The woman with the same scar.

The woman his children called family.

"Who are you?"

He whispered.

Clara looked at him.

And after three years of hiding...

She finally answered.

"My name isn't Clara Bennett."

A pause.

"It's Clara Whitmore."

Andrew's heart stopped.

Because Whitmore was not a random name.

It was his wife's maiden name.

The woman he buried...

May you like

Had just walked back into his life.
