CHAPTER 9 – The Betrayal Inside The Mansion

CHAPTER 9 – The Betrayal Inside The Mansion

The handcuffs were cold.

Andrew had worn expensive watches worth more than most people's houses.

He had shaken hands with presidents, CEOs, and men who controlled entire industries.

He had stood in rooms where everyone waited for his decision.

But nothing had ever felt as heavy as the metal locking around his wrists.

Because this time, he was not losing money.

He was not losing power.

He was losing the one thing he had spent his entire life protecting.

His family.

"No."

Clara stepped forward.

Her voice was shaking.

"No, you can't take him."

The officer looked at her with sympathy.

"Ma'am, we are only following the evidence."

"Evidence?"

Clara pointed at Victoria.

"You mean the evidence she created."

Victoria stood behind the officers with a calm smile.

The same smile she had worn for three years.

The smile of someone who believed she had already won.

Andrew looked at Clara.

"Don't."

She turned.

"What?"

"Don't let her make you angry."

Clara stared at him.

Even now.

Even with his own freedom being taken away.

He was thinking about her.

About the boys.

"I won't let them take you."

Andrew said nothing.

But his eyes answered.

He believed her.

The police escorted Andrew outside.

The entire neighborhood watched.

Cameras flashed.

Reporters shouted questions.

"Billionaire Andrew Whitmore arrested for fire that killed his wife!"

"Did the businessman hide his crime for three years?"

"Was the grieving husband actually the murderer?"

Every headline appeared within minutes.

Someone had prepared this.

Not today.

Not yesterday.

For years.

Inside the mansion, Clara stood frozen.

The house that once represented safety suddenly felt like a prison.

Victoria walked past her slowly.

"You should have stayed dead."

Clara looked at her.

"You are afraid."

Victoria stopped.

"What?"

"You finally lost control."

Victoria laughed.

"Andrew is gone."

"The world believes him guilty."

"And soon, those children will understand that their father is a monster."

Clara's expression hardened.

"You will never make them believe that."

Victoria leaned closer.

"You think children remember love?"

"They remember who stays."

Clara looked at the staircase.

Toward Noah and Ethan.

"They remember everything."

Victoria's smile disappeared for half a second.

Because she knew Clara was right.

The first thing Clara did after the police left was go upstairs.

The boys were sitting on the floor.

Both holding the old blue music box.

"Daddy is coming back."

Ethan whispered.

Clara sat beside them.

"Yes."

Noah looked at her.

"But everyone says Daddy hurt Mommy."

Clara's heart broke.

"Do you believe that?"

Both boys shook their heads immediately.

"No."

"Why?"

Noah looked surprised by the question.

"Because Daddy cries when he thinks nobody sees."

Clara looked down.

"And because..."

Ethan hugged the music box.

"Daddy still keeps Mommy's picture beside his bed."

A tear fell from Clara's eye.

The children had remembered the truth.

The adults had forgotten it.

Meanwhile, inside the police interrogation room, Andrew sat alone.

The room was cold.

The lights were too bright.

The walls felt like they were closing in.

Detective Harris placed a file on the table.

"Mr. Whitmore."

Andrew looked up.

"You know this is serious."

Andrew said nothing.

"We have your security card recorded at the scene."

"Your fingerprints were found near the ignition system."

"And witnesses saw you arguing with your wife before the fire."

Andrew stared.

All carefully arranged.

"Who gave you this information?"

The detective paused.

"Your brother."

Andrew's face changed.

"Thomas?"

The detective nodded.

"He came forward this morning."

A bitter laugh escaped Andrew.

"The man who hid my wife for three years?"

The detective looked uncomfortable.

"He claims he was protecting her."

Andrew leaned forward.

"Where is he now?"

The detective looked away.

"Missing."

Of course.

Thomas had disappeared.

Just when the truth needed him.

Back at the mansion, Clara searched every room.

She knew there had to be something.

Something Victoria missed.

Something that could save Andrew.

Because Victoria was arrogant.

And arrogant people always leave something behind.

She entered Andrew's office.

The place smelled like him.

Leather.

Coffee.

Old books.

Her eyes moved across the shelves.

Then stopped.

A small crack in the wall behind the painting.

She removed the painting.

A hidden compartment.

Inside was a small recorder.

Clara's hands shook.

She pressed play.

Static.

Then Andrew's voice.

"If someone is listening to this..."

Clara froze.

"It means something happened."

Andrew sounded tired.

Afraid.

"I found evidence that someone inside my family is trying to destroy us."

Clara covered her mouth.

"I don't know who I can trust anymore."

A pause.

"But I know one thing."

His voice softened.

"If Clara is ever found..."

Clara stopped breathing.

"Tell her I never stopped looking."

Tears filled her eyes.

Then Andrew continued.

"Tell her I know she would never abandon our children."

The recording continued.

"And tell my sons..."

His voice broke.

"Their mother loved them every single day she was gone."

Clara cried silently.

Then the final part played.

A different voice appeared.

A woman's voice.

Victoria.

"Andrew doesn't need to know."

Clara froze.

Victoria continued:

"Once the fire starts, everyone will believe Clara died."

Another voice answered.

Thomas.

"And Andrew?"

Victoria laughed.

"Andrew will blame himself."

The recording ended.

Clara stood completely still.

She finally had proof.

Not just that Victoria lied.

But that Victoria planned everything.

At that exact moment, the mansion lights went out.

Clara turned.

Someone was standing in the doorway.

She grabbed the recorder.

"Who is there?"

A figure stepped into the moonlight.

Thomas.

But he looked different.

Blood covered his shirt.

He was injured.

"Clara."

His voice was weak.

"You found it."

She stared at him.

"You recorded them."

Thomas nodded.

"I knew one day I would need proof."

"Why didn't you give it to Andrew?"

His eyes filled with regret.

"Because I was afraid."

"Of what?"

Thomas looked toward the window.

"Of the person who was really controlling everything."

Clara frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Thomas stepped closer.

"Victoria was never the mastermind."

Clara felt cold.

"Then who was?"

Thomas looked at her.

And whispered the name that destroyed everything.

"The man who raised you."

Clara froze.

"My father?"

Thomas nodded.

"The fire was never about Andrew."

A pause.

"It was about you."

Before Clara could ask another question...

A gunshot exploded through the mansion.

Thomas fell.

Clara screamed.

And somewhere outside...

Someone walked away.

Someone who had been hiding for three years.

May you like

Someone who was finally ready to finish what they started.
