CHAPTER 8 – The Children Who Remembered Everything

CHAPTER 8 – The Children Who Remembered Everything
The sound of Victoria’s voice filled the burned house.
Soft.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
And somehow, that made it more terrifying.
Andrew stood completely still.
Every instinct inside him told him one thing.
Protect the children.
But his children were not there.
They were supposed to be safe at home.
At least, that was what he believed.
"Victoria."
Andrew's voice was cold.
"Where are my sons?"
A quiet laugh came from the darkness.
"You still think about them first."
A pause.
"That was always your weakness."
Clara stepped forward.
"Show yourself."
The sound of heels echoed from the second floor.
Slow.
Confident.
Then Victoria appeared at the top of the staircase.
No fear.
No panic.
She looked like she belonged there.
Like the house was still hers.
"You should have stayed gone."
Victoria looked directly at Clara.
Clara's expression hardened.
"And you should have told the truth."
Victoria smiled.
"The truth?"
She walked down the stairs.
"Which truth?"
"The truth that your husband stopped loving you?"
"The truth that your family was already falling apart before the fire?"
Andrew's face changed.
"Enough."
Victoria looked at him.
"Is it?"
"You want to know why everything happened?"
She stopped at the bottom of the stairs.
"Because Clara refused to understand something."
"What?"
"People change."
Clara stared at her.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"People reveal who they really are."
For a moment, Victoria looked almost angry.
Then she smiled.
"You always were better at pretending to be innocent."
Andrew stepped between them.
"Where are my children?"
Victoria tilted her head.
"At home."
Andrew's eyes narrowed.
"With who?"
The silence was the answer.
"Where is the security team?"
Daniel asked.
Victoria smiled.
"Sleeping."
Andrew's blood went cold.
He immediately grabbed his phone.
No signal.
Victoria watched him.
"You should know by now."
"Everything in your world belongs to someone else."
Twenty minutes later, they arrived back at the Whitmore mansion.
The drive felt endless.
Andrew did not speak once.
Neither did Clara.
Both were terrified.
When they entered the house, they found Noah and Ethan sitting in the living room.
Safe.
Alive.
But something was wrong.
Andrew rushed toward them.
"My boys."
He dropped to his knees.
"Are you okay?"
Noah nodded.
But his face was serious.
"Dad."
Andrew froze.
Noah rarely called him that.
Not when he was scared.
Not when something mattered.
"What happened?"
The boy looked at Clara.
Then at Andrew.
"We remembered."
Andrew frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Ethan slowly walked forward.
His small hands were shaking.
"Everything."
The room became silent.
"What do you remember?"
Andrew asked carefully.
Noah looked toward the fireplace.
"The night Mommy disappeared."
Andrew felt his heart stop.
"You were there?"
Noah nodded.
"I was hiding."
Clara covered her mouth.
"I thought you were asleep."
She whispered.
Noah shook his head.
"I wasn't."
The little boy looked down.
"I heard people talking."
Andrew knelt closer.
"What people?"
Noah swallowed.
"Uncle Thomas."
Andrew closed his eyes.
"And?"
Noah looked frightened.
"Victoria."
The room went quiet.
Ethan stepped forward.
"I remember Mommy crying."
Clara immediately went pale.
"What did she say?"
Ethan squeezed his fingers together.
"She said..."
He struggled.
"She said she knew who did it."
Andrew's voice became softer.
"Who?"
The boy looked at him.
"She said..."
A pause.
"She said she was going to tell Daddy."
Andrew felt tears forming.
Because Clara had been trying to warn him.
And he never knew.
"Noah."
Andrew asked.
"What else?"
The older boy looked uncertain.
"I remember Mommy hiding something."
"Where?"
"In my room."
Andrew and Clara exchanged a look.
"What did she hide?"
Noah shook his head.
"I don't know."
Then Ethan suddenly spoke.
"The music box."
Everyone looked at him.
"What music box?"
"The one Mommy gave us."
Clara's face changed.
"The blue one?"
Both boys nodded.
Andrew frowned.
"You still have it?"
Noah looked embarrassed.
"I hid it."
"Why?"
"Because Victoria wanted to throw it away."
Andrew's expression darkened.
"Where is it?"
Noah ran upstairs.
Seconds later, he returned holding an old blue music box.
Clara touched it.
Her hands began trembling.
"This was mine."
Andrew looked at her.
"Yours?"
She nodded.
"My mother gave it to me."
Noah opened it.
A soft melody played.
The same melody as the lullaby.
Then something unexpected happened.
The bottom of the box opened.
Inside was a tiny piece of paper.
Clara picked it up.
Her eyes widened.
"My handwriting."
Andrew looked.
It was a message.
Written three years ago.
"If my children find this, it means I was not able to come back."
Andrew's breathing became uneven.
"I need you to remember something."
The words blurred through Clara's tears.
"Your father loves you."
Andrew looked away.
"If someone tells you otherwise, they are lying."
Then came the final sentence.
"The person who wants you to forget me is not a stranger."
A pause.
"It is someone who sits at our table."
Everyone became silent.
Because they understood.
Someone inside the family.
Suddenly, the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
Victoria stood there.
But she was not alone.
Behind her stood several police officers.
And in her hand was a folder.
Andrew immediately knew something was wrong.
"Andrew Whitmore."
The officer stepped forward.
"You are under arrest."
Silence.
Andrew stared.
"For what?"
The officer opened the folder.
"Attempted murder."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
The officer looked at the evidence.
"The fire three years ago."
Andrew felt cold.
"That's impossible."
Victoria smiled.
"No."
She looked at Clara.
"It's finally time everyone learns the truth."
She lifted the photograph.
The same photograph of Andrew near the fire.
"He started it."
Clara stepped forward.
"No."
Victoria looked at her.
"Then prove it."
A pause.
"Because every piece of evidence points to your husband."
Andrew looked at Clara.
And for the first time...
He saw fear in her eyes.
Not because she believed he was guilty.
Because she knew something worse.
Someone had spent three years preparing this moment.
May you like
To make the world believe Andrew destroyed his own family.
