CHAPTER 7 – The Man Who Buried The Truth

CHAPTER 7 – The Man Who Buried The Truth
The old Whitmore house stood exactly as Andrew remembered.
Broken.
Silent.
Dead.
The city had forgotten the property years ago.
The newspapers called it an abandoned mansion.
A place where a tragic accident happened.
A place where a young mother lost her life.
But Andrew knew better now.
It was not where his wife died.
It was where someone tried to erase her.
The black SUV stopped outside the burned remains of the house.
Andrew stepped out first.
The cold wind moved through the empty windows.
Behind him came Daniel, several security officers, and Clara.
Andrew wanted to tell her to stay away.
He wanted to protect her from the memories waiting inside.
But he knew something now.
Clara was not someone who needed protection from the truth.
She needed the truth to finally be free.
"You don't have to come in."
Andrew said quietly.
Clara looked at the burned house.
"I already walked out of this place once."
A pause.
"This time, I want to know why."
Andrew nodded.
Together, they entered.
The smell was different.
Three years had passed.
But Andrew could still feel it.
The smoke.
The panic.
The night everything disappeared.
Every step brought memories.
The staircase where he carried Noah after the fire.
The hallway where firefighters found Clara's bracelet.
The bedroom where everyone believed his wife died.
But now every memory had a question attached.
What was real?
What was a lie?
Daniel walked ahead.
"We found signs someone has been living here."
Andrew frowned.
"Here?"
Daniel nodded.
"Recently."
Clara stopped.
Her eyes moved toward the hallway.
"I know this place."
Andrew looked at her.
"What?"
She touched the wall.
"I remember hiding here."
A chill passed through him.
"Why?"
"Because someone was chasing me."
Andrew stared.
"Who?"
Clara closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
"I don't know."
A noise suddenly came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Daniel immediately reached for his weapon.
Andrew stepped in front of Clara.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming down the stairs.
Then a figure appeared.
Thomas Whitmore.
Andrew stopped breathing.
His older brother looked nothing like the man from family photographs.
No expensive suit.
No confident smile.
Just a tired man carrying years of secrets.
"Andrew."
Thomas said.
The sound of his voice made Andrew's anger explode.
"You knew."
Thomas looked at Clara.
Then at Andrew.
"Yes."
The honesty was worse than a lie.
Andrew stepped forward.
"Three years."
His voice shook.
"Three years you let me believe my wife was dead."
Thomas looked down.
"I had no choice."
Andrew laughed.
"No choice?"
"You watched me bury her."
"You watched my sons cry."
"You watched me destroy myself."
Thomas closed his eyes.
"I know."
"Then explain."
Silence.
Finally, Thomas spoke.
"Because if I told you the truth, they would have killed all of you."
Andrew froze.
"Who?"
Thomas looked around the burned house.
"The people who started this."
Clara stepped forward.
"You helped them."
Thomas looked at her.
Pain crossed his face.
"I helped you survive."
"No."
Clara's voice became stronger.
"You helped me disappear."
Thomas had no answer.
Andrew stared at his brother.
"Tell me everything."
Thomas looked at him.
"Are you sure?"
Andrew's eyes hardened.
"I spent three years grieving a dead woman who was standing in front of me."
A pause.
"I think I deserve the truth."
Thomas nodded.
"It started with your father."
Andrew's expression changed.
"My father?"
Thomas sighed.
"Your father built the Whitmore empire."
"He also built enemies."
"Before he died, he discovered someone inside the family was stealing money."
Andrew frowned.
"Who?"
Thomas looked away.
"Victoria."
Andrew went silent.
"But Victoria wasn't working alone."
Clara whispered:
"Who?"
Thomas looked at Andrew.
"Someone closer."
A terrible feeling entered Andrew's chest.
"Who?"
Thomas answered:
"Me."
The words echoed through the burned house.
Clara looked shocked.
Andrew stared.
"What?"
Thomas lowered his head.
"I helped her."
Andrew moved toward him.
"You?"
"I was angry."
Thomas admitted.
"I spent my whole life standing behind your father."
"Behind you."
"You became the favorite."
"You inherited everything."
His voice cracked.
"And I became the person everyone forgot."
Andrew looked disgusted.
"So you destroyed my family?"
"No."
Thomas shook his head.
"I wanted money."
"I wanted control."
"But I never wanted Clara hurt."
Clara laughed bitterly.
"Yet I burned."
Thomas looked at her.
"I know."
"And you let me believe my children lost me."
"I was trying to protect them."
Andrew stepped forward.
"Stop saying that."
The anger in his voice filled the room.
"You don't get to call betrayal protection."
Thomas accepted the words.
Because he knew they were true.
Then Clara noticed something.
A small object on the table.
A necklace.
Her necklace.
The one she wore the night of the fire.
She picked it up.
Her hands shaking.
"Where did you get this?"
Thomas looked at it.
"I found it after the fire."
Andrew stared.
"You kept it?"
Thomas nodded.
"I couldn't throw it away."
Clara looked at him.
"Why?"
Thomas's eyes filled with regret.
"Because when I pulled you from that house..."
A pause.
"I heard you say something."
Andrew looked at Clara.
"What?"
Thomas whispered:
"You said..."
"Protect my boys."
Clara covered her mouth.
Because she remembered.
She had said those words.
Then Thomas continued.
"I was supposed to take you to the hospital."
"But Victoria stopped me."
Andrew froze.
"She stopped you?"
Thomas nodded.
"She said if you survived, everything would collapse."
Clara stepped back.
"So she knew."
"Yes."
"She knew I was alive."
Thomas looked ashamed.
"Yes."
The truth finally stood in front of them.
Not a mystery.
Not a rumor.
A betrayal.
Then Andrew asked the question he had been avoiding.
"Why are you telling me now?"
Thomas looked toward the window.
"Because Victoria is going to kill again."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
Thomas reached into his coat.
Slowly.
He pulled out a small envelope.
"I found this in her apartment."
Andrew took it.
Inside was a document.
A new plan.
A plan to transfer control of the Whitmore company.
And at the bottom was a name.
Andrew Whitmore.
His signature.
But he had never signed it.
Someone was preparing to destroy him.
Again.
Before anyone could speak, Thomas looked at Clara.
"She knows you are back."
A pause.
"And this time..."
His face turned serious.
"She isn't trying to hide you."
"She's trying to make sure you disappear forever."
The lights inside the old house suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then a woman's voice echoed from upstairs.
"Andrew."
Everyone froze.
Victoria.
May you like
"I was wondering when you would finally find the truth."
