CHAPTER 10 — THE WOMAN WHO LEFT THE WARNING

CHAPTER 10 — THE WOMAN WHO LEFT THE WARNING
The message disappeared from the screen.
For several seconds, I simply stared at the empty monitor.
HE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR YOU SINCE THE DAY YOU WERE BORN.
Thomas Vale.
My biological father.
The man everyone had spent decades pretending was dead.
The man whose name appeared in every hidden file.
The man whose empire had shaped my entire life without me ever knowing it.
And somewhere out there, he was alive.
Watching.
Waiting.
I turned toward Victoria.
"You knew."
She looked exhausted.
"I suspected."
"You told me he was dead."
"I believed he was."
"You just said he created everything."
"I meant his system."
"Then what don't you know?"
Victoria looked toward the window.
"Almost everything."
That answer frightened me more than any confession.
Because Victoria had spent twenty-seven years hiding from the Vale family.
If she didn't know the truth, then nobody did.
Jason stepped toward the desk.
"We need to move."
"Why?"
"Because whoever sent that message knows we're here."
Victoria nodded.
"He's right."
I looked at her.
"Who?"
"Thomas."
"You said he was waiting for me."
"Yes."
"Then why hasn't he contacted me directly?"
Victoria's expression darkened.
"Because he doesn't want to talk."
"What does he want?"
She looked at me.
"He wants you to come to him."
"Why?"
"Because he believes you belong to him."
I laughed bitterly.
"Nobody owns me."
Victoria didn't smile.
"That's what your mother said."
"Elizabeth?"
"Yes."
"What happened to her?"
Victoria's face changed.
"She disappeared."
"When?"
"The night you were born."
I stared.
"She's alive."
"I don't know."
"But she was at the house."
"That wasn't Elizabeth."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
Victoria shook her head.
"The woman we met wasn't your mother."
I remembered the old woman standing in the doorway.
The tears.
The way she'd touched my face.
The way she'd called me by name.
I felt sick.
"Then who was she?"
Victoria whispered:
"Someone who wanted you to believe Elizabeth was still alive."
We searched the safe house.
Every camera.
Every door.
Every vehicle.
Nothing.
The woman we'd met had vanished.
So had the SUV.
No license plate.
No fingerprints.
No trace.
Except for one thing.
A small envelope had been left beneath the kitchen table.
My name was written on it.
MELINE.
I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A woman holding a newborn baby.
The woman was young.
Dark hair.
Tired eyes.
I recognized her immediately.
Elizabeth.
The baby was me.
On the back was a handwritten message:
I DID NOT ABANDON YOU.
Below it:
I WAS FORCED TO LEAVE.
Then another line:
ASK YOUR FATHER WHY.
I stared at the photograph.
"My father."
Jason looked at me.
"Thomas?"
I nodded.
"There's more."
At the bottom of the photograph was a date.
The day I was born.
And beneath it—
a hospital room number.
Room 417.
We found the hospital by noon.
It had changed names twice.
The original records were supposed to have been destroyed.
But my company had resources I had never known existed.
Victoria accessed an archived medical database.
The file appeared.
PATIENT: ELIZABETH VALE
CHILD: FEMALE
FATHER: UNKNOWN
I frowned.
"Why is the father unknown?"
Victoria stared at the screen.
"Because someone changed it."
"Who?"
She opened the audit trail.
One name appeared.
MICHAEL CARTER.
My supposed father.
I stared.
"He changed the record."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"To protect Thomas."
"From what?"
"From the law."
I looked at Jason.
"What law?"
Victoria hesitated.
"The circumstances surrounding your birth."
I felt a chill.
"What circumstances?"
She opened another document.
A court order.
Sealed.
The date matched my birth.
I read the first sentence.
THE CHILD SHALL REMAIN OUTSIDE THE VALE FAMILY STRUCTURE UNTIL THE AGE OF TWENTY-FIVE.
My hands trembled.
"Why twenty-five?"
"Because that's when you would gain control of the trust."
I stared.
"So my entire life was scheduled."
"Yes."
"By Thomas?"
"Partly."
"Who else?"
Victoria pointed to the signature.
Richard Vale.
And below it—
Elizabeth.
I stared.
"My mother agreed?"
"She had no choice."
We found the original nurse.
She was eighty-six.
Her name was Margaret Bell.
She lived in a nursing home outside Boston.
When we arrived, she refused to speak to us.
Then I showed her the photograph.
She began to cry.
"I knew you would come."
I sat beside her.
"Why?"
"Because your mother asked me to wait."
"How long?"
"Twenty-five years."
I swallowed.
"Why?"
"Because she knew someone would eventually tell you the truth."
"What truth?"
Margaret looked at Victoria.
"You survived."
I frowned.
"Of course I survived."
"No."
She shook her head.
"That's not what I mean."
She reached beneath her pillow.
A small wooden box emerged.
She handed it to me.
Inside was a cassette tape.
Another recording.
I looked at Victoria.
She closed her eyes.
"Play it."
The tape began.
Static.
Then a woman's voice.
Elizabeth.
My mother.
Young.
Terrified.
"If you're hearing this, Meline, I failed."
My breath caught.
The recording continued.
"I wanted to keep you away from the Vale family."
A pause.
"They will tell you I abandoned you."
Another pause.
"Don't believe them."
I pressed my hand against my mouth.
"I left because Thomas gave me a choice."
The tape crackled.
"Your life..."
Silence.
Then:
"...or mine."
I froze.
Elizabeth continued.
"He promised that if I disappeared, he would leave you alone."
The tape became distorted.
"But he lied."
I stared at the machine.
"He always lies."
A door slammed in the background.
Elizabeth gasped.
Then whispered:
"Michael, if you hear this, take her and run."
The recording stopped.
I looked at Victoria.
"Who was coming?"
She shook her head.
"We don't know."
Margaret spoke quietly.
"I do."
We turned toward her.
"Who?"
She looked at me.
"Thomas."
Margaret told us what happened that night.
Thomas had arrived at the hospital.
He had demanded to see the baby.
Elizabeth refused.
He threatened her.
She tried to escape.
Michael helped her.
But before they could leave, someone attacked them.
Michael was injured.
Elizabeth disappeared.
And the baby—
me—
was secretly transferred to another hospital.
Margaret was the only person who knew.
I stared at her.
"Where was I taken?"
She hesitated.
"Your father knew."
"Michael?"
"No."
"Thomas?"
She nodded.
"Thomas."
I felt sick.
"He took me?"
"Not personally."
"Then who?"
Margaret whispered:
"Your mother."
I froze.
"Elizabeth?"
"Yes."
"But she disappeared."
"She left you with someone."
"Who?"
Margaret looked at Victoria.
Victoria whispered:
"Richard."
I stood.
"No."
"Richard took you."
"Why?"
"Because he needed leverage against Thomas."
I shook my head.
"Then how did I end up with Michael?"
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"Because Richard changed his mind."
"Why?"
She looked directly at me.
"Because he discovered what you were."
"What was I?"
Margaret whispered:
"Not simply Thomas's daughter."
The room went silent.
"What else?"
She looked at the photograph.
"You were carrying something."
I frowned.
"What?"
"A genetic marker."
I didn't understand.
"Thomas had a rare hereditary condition."
"So?"
"You inherited it."
I stared.
"Why does that matter?"
"Because the marker gave you access to the trust."
I felt cold.
"That's why the system recognizes my DNA."
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
Outside the nursing home, someone was waiting.
A black sedan.
No driver visible.
Jason noticed it first.
"Don't move."
I stopped.
The rear window lowered.
An old man sat inside.
White hair.
Gray eyes.
A thin scar crossed his jaw.
I knew him.
I'd seen his photograph.
Thomas Vale.
My father.
He looked at me.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then he stepped out.
Jason raised his weapon.
Thomas smiled.
"Put it away."
"No."
Thomas looked at me.
"You have your mother's eyes."
My heart pounded.
"Are you Thomas?"
He nodded.
"Yes."
"My father?"
"Yes."
"You've been watching me."
"All your life."
"Why?"
"Because I wanted to know what you would become."
I stepped closer.
"You abandoned me."
"No."
"You let me believe Michael was my father."
"I protected you."
I almost laughed.
"Everyone says that."
Thomas looked at Victoria.
"You survived."
She stared at him.
"You tried to kill me."
"I tried to save the family."
"You destroyed it."
Thomas sighed.
"Families destroy themselves."
I stared at him.
"Why did you let my mother disappear?"
His expression changed.
"Because she chose to leave."
"She left because you threatened her."
"No."
He shook his head.
"She left because she knew what would happen if she stayed."
"What?"
Thomas looked at me.
"You."
I froze.
"What about me?"
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out a folded document.
And handed it to me.
I opened it.
It was a birth certificate.
My name.
My date of birth.
My mother's name.
My father's name.
But beneath it was something I'd never seen.
SECOND CHILD: UNKNOWN.
I looked at Thomas.
"What does this mean?"
His eyes hardened.
"Your mother didn't give birth to one child."
My blood went cold.
"She had twins."
I stared.
"Where is the other child?"
Thomas looked toward the horizon.
"That's why I came."
"Where?"
He whispered:
"Your brother is alive."
I couldn't breathe.
"Who?"
Thomas's face became grim.
"Daniel."
The world seemed to stop.
"Daniel isn't Richard's son?"
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
"Then whose son is he?"
Thomas looked directly into my eyes.
"Yours and Elizabeth's."
I stepped back.
"No."
"Daniel is your twin brother."
Silence.
Every lie.
Every betrayal.
Every secret.
Suddenly rearranged themselves.
Daniel hadn't been chasing the trust because he wanted power.
He had been chasing it because he believed it belonged to him.
Because he was my brother.
Because someone had spent twenty-five years convincing him that I had stolen the life that should have been his.
Thomas reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
"You lied to me."
"Yes."
"You destroyed my family."
"Yes."
"You let me hate the wrong people."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Thomas looked at me.
"Because your mother made me promise."
"What promise?"
His voice broke.
"That if one child survived..."
He looked at the photograph of Elizabeth.
"...I would protect her from the other."
I stared.
"From Daniel?"
Thomas nodded.
"Because your brother was taken."
"By whom?"
Thomas looked toward the black sedan.
His face suddenly hardened.
"Richard."
I felt a chill.
"Why?"
Thomas whispered:
"Because Richard didn't want an heir."
He looked at me.
"He wanted a weapon."
Behind us, a gunshot cracked through the air.
Thomas collapsed.
Jason pulled me to the ground.
Victoria screamed.
And from the trees came a voice.
Daniel.
"Hello, sister."
I looked up.
A figure stood in the shadows.
Silver bird ring.
Scar near the eye.
May you like
He smiled.
And for the first time, I saw the face of the brother I had never known.
