CHAPTER 11 — THE FALL OF THE FAMILY

CHAPTER 11 — THE FALL OF THE FAMILY

The gunshot echoed across the parking lot.

For one terrible second, I thought Thomas was dead.

Then he moved.

His hand pressed against his shoulder.

Blood spread between his fingers.

"Get down!" Jason shouted.

Victoria dragged me behind a concrete barrier.

Another shot struck the pavement where I had been standing.

I looked toward the trees.

Daniel was gone.

Only the cold wind remained.

"Thomas!"

I crawled toward him.

Jason grabbed my arm.

"Don't."

"He's my father."

"And whoever shot him may still be here."

Thomas coughed.

"She's right."

I looked at him.

"You knew Daniel was coming."

"Yes."

"You knew he would shoot you."

"I hoped he wouldn't."

"You knew."

Thomas tried to sit up.

I pressed my hand against his wound.

"Where's the ambulance?"

Jason was already calling.

But Thomas caught my wrist.

"No hospital."

"You're bleeding."

"I've survived worse."

"You could die."

He looked into my eyes.

"Then listen carefully."

His voice was weak.

"The family is about to collapse."

I frowned.

"What family?"

"All of it."

We took Thomas to a private medical facility owned by Carter Security.

Nobody outside the company knew it existed.

The doctors stabilized him within twenty minutes.

The bullet had passed through his shoulder.

He would live.

But the real damage had already been done.

Because while Thomas was being treated, Victoria discovered something worse.

The company was under attack.

Not physically.

Legally.

Financially.

Digitally.

Every hidden structure we'd uncovered was being exposed simultaneously.

Accounts were frozen.

Subsidiaries were subpoenaed.

Board members were resigning.

News outlets were publishing stories about the Carter and Vale families.

And someone had leaked the documents.

Thousands of them.

I stared at the screens.

"Who released all of this?"

Victoria looked at me.

"Daniel."

"No."

She nodded.

"He wants the family destroyed."

"But he's exposing himself."

"He doesn't care."

I watched another headline appear.

VANCE?

No.

Not Vance.

VALE FAMILY EMPIRE COLLAPSING AFTER SECRET FINANCIAL NETWORK EXPOSED

The article contained my name.

My father's name.

Thomas's name.

Richard's name.

Sydney's name.

Jason's name.

Everyone.

The secrets were no longer secrets.

By midnight, the first arrest was made.

Richard Vale.

Federal agents surrounded his mansion.

He didn't resist.

He simply walked outside in an expensive suit and smiled for the cameras.

When reporters shouted questions, he raised one hand.

"I have been framed."

Then he looked directly into one camera.

"By my own family."

I watched the footage from the operations room.

Victoria stood beside me.

"He knows."

"Knows what?"

"That you have the evidence."

I stared at the screen.

Richard continued.

"My niece has spent years trying to destroy this family."

My jaw tightened.

"He's blaming me."

"Of course."

"Can he make it believable?"

"With enough money?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

Then Richard said something that made me freeze.

"Meline Carter was never the rightful heir."

The reporters erupted.

Richard smiled.

"The rightful heir is alive."

I looked at Victoria.

She whispered:

"Daniel."

The next morning, Daniel appeared on television.

Not hiding.

Not running.

Standing in front of a courthouse.

He wore a dark coat.

His face was calm.

He looked directly into the cameras.

"My name is Daniel Vale."

I stared.

He continued.

"I was stolen from my family at birth."

My hands went cold.

"My sister was given the life that belonged to me."

He held up a document.

"I have proof."

Victoria whispered:

"He's using the birth records."

Daniel continued.

"For twenty-five years, I was told I had no family."

His voice hardened.

"Meanwhile, my sister lived in comfort."

I almost laughed.

Comfort?

He had no idea.

Daniel looked into the camera.

"I don't want money."

He paused.

"I want the truth."

Victoria stared at me.

"That's not true."

"What?"

"He wants the trust."

Daniel's final sentence appeared across every screen.

"I am the rightful heir."

By noon, the board demanded a meeting.

I entered the conference room.

Twenty-one executives sat around the table.

People I'd known for years.

People who had smiled at me.

People who had congratulated me.

Now they wouldn't look me in the eye.

The chairman stood.

"Meline, we need to discuss your position."

"My position?"

"Until the ownership dispute is resolved."

"You want me removed."

"We want stability."

I looked around the room.

"How many of you were contacted by Daniel?"

Nobody answered.

I smiled.

"Sixteen."

The room froze.

"I know."

One director stood.

"You have no right to threaten us."

"I'm not threatening anyone."

I placed a folder on the table.

"I'm showing you what I know."

Inside were payment records.

Secret agreements.

Private communications.

Every executive who had received money from Richard.

The director sat down.

I looked around.

"This company survived because my father built it."

I placed another folder on the table.

"It survived because my mother protected it."

Another.

"It survived because Victoria sacrificed her identity."

Another.

"And it survived because people like you stayed silent."

Nobody moved.

I leaned forward.

"You don't get to abandon me now."

The chairman swallowed.

"What do you want?"

"Nothing."

He looked confused.

"I want the company protected."

"From whom?"

I looked at the screen.

Daniel's face was still on television.

"From the people who think destroying it will make them free."

The doors opened.

Federal agents entered.

The room erupted.

"Everyone remain seated."

I stood.

"What is this?"

An agent approached me.

"Meline Carter?"

"Yes."

"We have a warrant."

"For?"

"Your company."

I looked at Victoria.

She was stunned.

"Who signed it?"

The agent handed me the document.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

The authorization came from a federal judge.

Based on evidence supplied by—

Daniel Vale.

I laughed.

Of course.

Daniel wasn't trying to steal the company.

He was trying to force it into federal custody.

Because once the government controlled the assets, nobody in the family could claim them.

Not Richard.

Not me.

Not him.

The agent said:

"We need access to all financial records."

I nodded.

"You'll get them."

Victoria looked at me.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"But if they take the company—"

"They'll take the company."

She stared.

"Why?"

"Because I finally understand Daniel."

I found him that evening.

Not physically.

Digitally.

He had left a message inside the company system.

A video.

He sat in a dark room.

"You think I'm trying to destroy you."

I watched silently.

"I'm not."

Daniel leaned closer to the camera.

"I'm trying to destroy what they built."

He looked tired.

Almost sad.

"Richard lied to me."

He paused.

"Thomas lied to me."

Another pause.

"Elizabeth lied to me."

His eyes hardened.

"And you were the only person who didn't know."

I felt my throat tighten.

"I hated you because I thought you had chosen this life."

He looked down.

"You didn't."

Daniel continued.

"You were just another prisoner."

Then he revealed something.

A document appeared beside him.

VALE SUCCESSION AGREEMENT.

I recognized the signatures.

Thomas.

Richard.

Elizabeth.

And my mother.

Daniel spoke.

"Twenty-five years ago, they agreed that one of us would inherit the trust."

He looked directly at me.

"They didn't know which child would survive."

My blood ran cold.

"What?"

"They didn't know which twin would be taken."

I stared at the screen.

Daniel continued.

"Richard took me."

He swallowed.

"Thomas took you."

"Why?"

"Because they made a choice."

I whispered:

"Who?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Your mother."

The video froze.

I couldn't breathe.

Elizabeth had chosen me.

She had chosen which child would stay with Thomas.

And which child would be taken by Richard.

I hated her.

Then I understood.

Maybe she hadn't chosen me because she loved me more.

Maybe she had chosen me because she believed Daniel could survive Richard.

Maybe she thought I couldn't.

Either way, she had separated us.

And the consequences had lasted twenty-five years.

Thomas woke near midnight.

I entered his room alone.

He looked at me.

"You know."

"Yes."

"About the twins."

"Yes."

"About Elizabeth."

"Yes."

He closed his eyes.

"I never wanted this."

"But you allowed it."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I was afraid."

I laughed bitterly.

"You're Thomas Vale."

"I know."

"The man everyone fears."

"Fear doesn't make you brave."

I sat beside him.

"Did you love my mother?"

He looked at me.

"More than anything."

"Then why did you let her disappear?"

"Because she asked me to."

"Why?"

"Because she knew Richard would kill you both."

"She sacrificed Daniel."

Thomas shook his head.

"She thought she was sacrificing herself."

I looked away.

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

"You must know."

"I haven't seen her in twenty-five years."

I stared at him.

"Then who left the warning?"

His face changed.

"What warning?"

"The photograph."

He went silent.

"Thomas."

He looked terrified.

"That wasn't Elizabeth."

"I know."

"Then who?"

Thomas whispered:

"Someone who shouldn't be alive."

Before I could ask anything else, every light in the facility went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

An alarm began screaming.

Jason shouted from the hallway.

"Security breach!"

Victoria ran inside.

"Someone is in the building."

Thomas sat up.

"Who?"

Victoria looked at me.

"Richard."

I froze.

"He's under arrest."

"He escaped."

The emergency lights came on.

A guard appeared at the door.

"He's gone."

Thomas looked at me.

"No."

"What?"

"He's not escaping."

He pointed toward the window.

"He's coming for you."

A shadow moved outside.

Then the glass shattered.

Jason pulled me down.

A bullet struck the wall.

Thomas shouted:

"Get her out!"

I crawled toward the door.

Another shot.

Then silence.

We waited.

Nothing.

Jason looked outside.

"No one."

Victoria picked up a piece of glass.

Something was attached to it.

A small envelope.

My name.

MELINE.

I opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

YOUR MOTHER IS ALIVE.

I stared.

Then another line appeared beneath it.

AND SHE IS THE ONE WHO STARTED THE WAR.

My hands began to shake.

Because if Elizabeth was alive—

then every story we'd been told about my birth could still be a lie.

And if she had started the war...

I didn't know whether I wanted to find her.

Or run from her.

Three hours later, the family empire officially collapsed.

Richard was recaptured.

The federal government seized the hidden accounts.

The board resigned.

The Vale properties were frozen.

The trust was placed under court protection.

Jason's father surrendered.

Sydney was found alive.

She was exhausted, frightened, but unharmed.

When I saw her, she hugged me.

"I'm sorry."

I held her tightly.

"You didn't do this."

"I should have told you."

"You were trying to protect me."

She laughed through tears.

"That sounds familiar."

I smiled.

Then she whispered:

"There's something you need to know."

"What?"

She looked toward the hallway.

"Daniel didn't kidnap me."

I froze.

"What?"

"He rescued me."

"From whom?"

Sydney's eyes filled with fear.

"Your mother."

I stepped back.

"What did she do?"

Sydney shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Tell me."

"Daniel said she wasn't trying to hurt you."

"Then what?"

Sydney whispered:

"She was trying to prepare you."

"For what?"

Sydney looked directly at me.

"For the man coming to take the trust."

I frowned.

"Richard?"

She shook her head.

"Thomas?"

Again, no.

"Then who?"

Sydney's voice broke.

"The person who created the Vale family."

I remembered Victoria's words.

The man who created all of this.

My father.

Thomas.

But Sydney was shaking her head.

"No."

She whispered:

"Not Thomas."

I stared at her.

"Then who?"

Sydney looked toward the dark corridor.

"The woman who gave birth to you."

My heart stopped.

Elizabeth.

Alive.

Watching.

And somehow at the center of everything.

The family had fallen.

May you like

But the war was not over.

It had only finally reached the person who started it.
