CHAPTER 6 — THE MAN BEHIND THE FAMILY

CHAPTER 6 — THE MAN BEHIND THE FAMILY
The note remained on the floor long after the lights came back.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody spoke.
The words were simple.
ASK SYDNEY WHO REALLY FATHERED HER CHILD.
But the real threat wasn't the question.
It was the fact that someone had managed to place the note inside a secure house without being seen.
Elena picked up the silver bird pendant with a pair of gloves.
"This wasn't here before."
"No," I said.
She examined it beneath the emergency light.
"Someone wanted us to find it."
Jason stared at the pendant.
"Victoria wore one like that."
Elizabeth nodded.
"Every member of the old Vale family did."
I looked at her.
"Why?"
"It was a family symbol."
"What did it mean?"
Elizabeth's expression darkened.
"Blood."
A cold silence followed.
Sydney was still crying.
I turned toward her.
"You know who the father is."
She shook her head.
"I don't."
"Then why are you afraid?"
"Because I know what Mom told me."
"What?"
Sydney swallowed.
"She said the father wasn't supposed to matter."
I stared at her.
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one I have."
I stepped closer.
"Who did she make you meet?"
Sydney closed her eyes.
"Daniel."
Jason's head snapped toward her.
"You met him?"
Sydney nodded.
"Six months ago."
"Where?"
"At a hotel."
"Why?"
"He said he could make the trust disappear."
I froze.
"The trust?"
Sydney nodded.
"He told me that if I helped him, you would never inherit anything."
I stared at her.
"What did he want?"
She whispered:
"You."
The room went silent.
I looked at Jason.
Then Elizabeth.
Then Sydney.
"Why me?"
Sydney's voice broke.
"Because you're the key."
"The key to what?"
"The Vale bloodline."
Elizabeth slowly sat down.
"Daniel believes you are the rightful heir."
"I am."
"No."
She looked at me.
"He believes you're more than that."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Elizabeth hesitated.
"Thomas created a second trust."
"Another one?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
"Under your name."
My heart sank.
"How much?"
"Money isn't the important part."
"Then what is?"
"Control."
She looked at Jason.
"The first trust controls the company."
Then she looked at me.
"The second controls something much more valuable."
"What?"
"Information."
Elena opened her laptop.
"She's right."
She brought up a corporate database.
"Thomas Vale owned controlling interests in seventeen companies."
She clicked.
"Five are still active."
Another click.
"Three are in cybersecurity."
Another.
"Two control financial infrastructure."
I stared.
"Why would one family need that much power?"
"They didn't build it for money," Elena said.
"Then why?"
She looked at me.
"Influence."
The word settled heavily over the room.
Thomas Vale hadn't built an empire.
He had built a network.
Banks.
Security firms.
Investment companies.
Private intelligence contractors.
Data brokers.
And hidden beneath all of it—
a system capable of moving information between them.
I whispered:
"My company."
Elena nodded.
"Your company is one of the final pieces."
Jason suddenly understood.
"That's why they targeted her."
"Yes."
"But why marry her?"
Elena looked at him.
"Because marriage would have given him access to her legal and financial structure."
Jason lowered his eyes.
"I didn't know."
I stared at him.
"You knew enough."
He didn't argue.
At 10:30 that morning, we moved to another location.
A private office belonging to Elena's firm.
Sydney remained under protection.
Elizabeth stayed with us.
Jason was kept in a separate room.
I needed answers.
Not apologies.
Not excuses.
Answers.
Elena placed a thick file on the table.
"This is everything we've recovered about Richard Vale."
I frowned.
"Richard?"
"Thomas's brother."
"He's alive?"
"Yes."
I opened the file.
A photograph showed an older man with silver hair and cold eyes.
Richard Vale.
He had served as chairman of several companies.
He had donated millions to charities.
He had appeared at political fundraisers.
He had been photographed beside senators, judges, CEOs, and diplomats.
A respectable man.
A dangerous man.
"What does he have to do with Daniel?"
"Everything."
Elena turned the page.
"Richard was the person who managed Thomas's hidden assets."
Another page.
"He also controlled the second trust."
My eyes narrowed.
"Then why didn't Thomas control it?"
"Because Thomas didn't trust himself."
"What does that mean?"
Elena looked at Elizabeth.
"Tell her."
Elizabeth sighed.
"Thomas knew Richard wanted his empire."
"Why?"
"Because Richard believed Thomas had stolen what should have been his."
"Was he right?"
Elizabeth looked down.
"Partially."
"Meaning?"
"Richard was the older brother."
I stared.
"Then why wasn't he in control?"
"Because their father chose Thomas."
"Why?"
"Thomas was more disciplined."
Elizabeth paused.
"Richard was more ambitious."
I closed the file.
"And Daniel?"
"Richard's son."
My blood ran cold.
"Daniel is Richard's son?"
"Yes."
Jason stood outside the glass wall.
He had heard everything.
He looked stunned.
"Then Daniel isn't Thomas's son."
Elizabeth shook her head.
"No."
Jason's face changed.
"Then why did everyone say he was?"
"Because Richard wanted him to be."
I looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because Daniel was the weapon Richard planned to use against Thomas."
The story became clearer.
Richard had spent decades waiting.
Thomas built the empire.
Richard watched.
Thomas had children.
Richard watched.
Thomas created the trust.
Richard waited.
Then Victoria discovered the truth.
She learned that Richard had been siphoning money from the companies.
She confronted him.
And she disappeared.
But Richard didn't kill her.
Not directly.
He ordered someone else to do it.
Someone inside Thomas's organization.
I looked at Jason.
"Who?"
Elizabeth shook her head.
"We never found out."
"Then how do you know?"
"Because Victoria left a message."
"Where?"
Elizabeth reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small cassette tape.
I stared.
"You kept this?"
"For twenty-seven years."
"Why didn't you give it to me before?"
"Because I was afraid."
I looked at the tape.
"Of Richard?"
"Of what it would reveal."
Elena found an old player.
She inserted the cassette.
Static.
Then a woman's voice.
Young.
Terrified.
Victoria.
"If you're hearing this, I'm probably dead."
Jason closed his eyes.
Victoria continued.
"Richard isn't working alone."
I looked at Elizabeth.
"Who else?"
The recording continued.
"Someone inside Thomas's family is helping him."
My heart stopped.
Victoria's voice became quieter.
"And it's someone Thomas loves."
The tape crackled.
Then:
"Elizabeth... don't trust—"
The recording cut out.
Silence.
Jason opened his eyes.
"Who was she going to name?"
Elizabeth shook her head.
"We never found out."
I looked at the tape.
"No."
"What?"
"She didn't say the name because someone interrupted her."
Elena nodded.
"You're right."
I replayed the final seconds.
Static.
A door opening.
A man's voice in the background.
Then Victoria gasped.
The recording ended.
I listened again.
This time I heard it.
A single word.
Barely audible.
"Richard."
At noon, someone knocked on the office door.
Everyone froze.
A security guard entered.
"Ms. Carter."
"What?"
"There's a man downstairs."
"Who?"
"He says his name is Richard Vale."
Nobody moved.
Elizabeth whispered:
"No."
Jason stepped forward.
"He's here?"
The guard nodded.
"He says he wants to speak with Meline."
I looked at Elena.
She shook her head.
"No."
The guard continued.
"He also brought someone."
"Who?"
The guard hesitated.
"Your father."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
"He says Mr. Carter is alive."
I stood.
"Bring them upstairs."
Elena grabbed my arm.
"No."
I looked at her.
"My father is alive."
"And Richard Vale is downstairs."
"Exactly."
"That's why it's dangerous."
I pulled my arm free.
"I need answers."
Elena stared at me.
Then nodded.
"Fine."
Security escorted them upstairs.
The door opened.
Richard Vale entered first.
He looked exactly like the photograph.
Calm.
Elegant.
Completely unafraid.
Behind him came my father.
His shirt was torn.
There was blood near his temple.
But he was alive.
I stared.
"Dad."
He looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
Richard smiled.
"Family reunions are always emotional."
I stepped forward.
"What do you want?"
Richard looked around the room.
"Not what you think."
"You've been manipulating my family."
"No."
He smiled.
"Your family manipulated itself."
"You ordered the loan."
"No."
"You used Jason."
"Jason made his own choices."
"You killed Victoria."
His expression finally changed.
"Careful."
"Did you?"
"No."
"Then who did?"
Richard looked at my father.
My father lowered his head.
Richard said:
"Ask him."
I turned.
"Dad?"
My father whispered:
"I didn't kill Victoria."
"Then what did you do?"
He looked at me.
"I helped hide her."
The room froze.
I stared at him.
"Hide her?"
He nodded.
"Why?"
"Because she wasn't dead."
Jason stepped forward.
"What?"
My father looked at him.
"Victoria survived."
Elizabeth began crying.
"No."
My father continued.
"She survived the attack."
I felt dizzy.
"Where is she?"
Richard smiled.
"That's the right question."
I turned toward him.
"Where?"
Richard walked closer.
"She's been watching you for years."
"Who?"
He leaned toward me.
"The woman you know as Elena Brooks."
I turned.
Elena had gone completely still.
My blood ran cold.
I looked at my attorney.
"Elena?"
She didn't speak.
Richard smiled.
"Your attorney has been protecting you for years."
I stared at Elena.
She finally lowered her eyes.
And then she said something that shattered everything.
"My real name isn't Elena Brooks."
Jason stepped forward.
"Then who are you?"
She looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
"My name is Victoria Vale."
The room disappeared beneath my feet.
The woman whose death had shaped the entire conspiracy...
had been sitting beside me the entire time.
And suddenly, I understood why Elena had always known exactly where every piece of evidence was.
Why she had always been one step ahead.
Why she had never allowed me to investigate Victoria's death too deeply.
Because she wasn't protecting the secret from me.
She was protecting herself.
Richard turned toward the door.
"You wanted to know who was behind your family."
He smiled.
"Now you know."
Then he walked away.
I looked at Victoria.
She whispered:
"I'm sorry."
I couldn't speak.
Because there was one question I needed answered.

If Victoria was alive...
then whose body had they buried twenty-seven years ago?
