Chapter 11 — Ryan's Final Lie

Chapter 11 — Ryan's Final Lie
The gun was pointed at Catherine.
My mother stood in the doorway, her hand steady.
For the first time in my life, I saw her without the mask she had worn for decades.
Not frightened.
Not grieving.
Not helpless.
Powerful.
Cold.
“Mom,” I whispered.
She didn't look at me.
Her eyes remained fixed on Catherine.
“You were supposed to stay dead.”
Catherine smiled.
“And you were supposed to stay hidden.”
Ryan moved toward me.
“Olivia, get behind me.”
My mother finally looked at him.
“Don't.”
Her voice was strangely gentle.
“You've spent your entire life protecting the wrong woman.”
Ryan stopped.
I stared at him.
“What does she mean?”
He didn't answer.
My stomach tightened.
“Ryan?”
His eyes met mine.
And I knew.
There was another secret.
Another lie.
One he'd been carrying alone.
My mother lowered the gun slightly.
“Tell her.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
“Olivia…”
“Tell me.”
He looked at Catherine.
Then at my mother.
Finally, he looked at me.
“I didn't marry you by accident.”
My heart sank.
“I know.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You don't know the truth.”
The Order
Ryan walked toward the window.
“When I first met you, I already knew who you were.”
I stared at him.
“We met at the charity gala.”
“Yes.”
“You spilled champagne on my dress.”
“I didn't.”
I blinked.
“What?”
“I deliberately knocked the glass.”
My chest tightened.
“Why?”
“Because I needed a reason to speak to you.”
I shook my head.
“You approached me.”
“Yes.”
“You asked me to dance.”
“Yes.”
“You told me you didn't believe in love at first sight.”
His eyes filled with regret.
“That was a lie.”
I couldn't breathe.
“Who sent you?”
Ryan was silent.
Then:
“Richard.”
His father's name hit me like a physical blow.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard knew about Guardian.”
I stared.
“And he knew about me.”
“Yes.”
“What did he want?”
Ryan swallowed.
“He wanted me to marry you.”
“Why?”
“To gain access to your father's trust.”
My heart broke.
“You married me for money.”
“No.”
“You just said—”
“I was ordered to marry you.”
“That's not better.”
“I know.”
I stepped backward.
“How long were you planning to deceive me?”
“Seven years.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
The number again.
Seven.
Always seven.
Ryan continued:
“Richard told me that if I married you, stayed with you for seven years, and gained your trust, the trust would eventually become accessible.”
I looked at the marriage contract.
“So the seventh anniversary was the objective.”
“Yes.”
“And the inheritance?”
“Richard wanted it.”
“For himself?”
“Yes.”
I looked at Catherine.
She wasn't surprised.
She'd known.
My mother remained silent.
I turned back to Ryan.
“What was your final instruction?”
His voice became almost inaudible.
“To make you sign everything over before the seventh year.”
My heart stopped.
“And if I refused?”
Ryan looked at me.
“I was ordered to destroy you.”
Silence.
The First Betrayal
I couldn't stop shaking.
“You were supposed to destroy me?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Financially.”
He looked down.
“Richard wanted me to make you appear incompetent.”
“Then?”
“Force you to resign from the trust.”
“And if that didn't work?”
“Divorce.”
I laughed through my tears.
“So Vanessa wasn't the first woman.”
“No.”
“There were others?”
“Yes.”
“How many?”
Ryan looked ashamed.
“Three.”
I stared at him.
“Three women?”
“They were all attempts to make you jealous.”
“And I never knew.”
“That was the point.”
I remembered every argument.
Every night Ryan came home late.
Every time he told me I was imagining things.
Every time his mother told me I wasn't good enough.
It had all been calculated.
But something didn't make sense.
“Then why didn't you finish the plan?”
Ryan looked at me.
“Because I fell in love with you.”
I shook my head.
“Don't.”
“It's true.”
“You don't get to say that.”
“I know.”
“You lied to me from the moment we met.”
“Yes.”
“You manipulated me.”
“Yes.”
“You were ordered to destroy me.”
“Yes.”
“Why should I believe anything you say now?”
Ryan stepped closer.
“Because if I wanted your inheritance, I'd already have it.”
I froze.
“What?”
He pointed toward the contract.
“The seventh anniversary is tonight.”
I looked at the clock.
11:37 PM.
Twenty-three minutes.
Ryan continued:
“If I were still following Richard's orders, I'd have forced you to sign hours ago.”
I stared at him.
“Then why didn't you?”
“Because I never intended to take your inheritance.”
“What did you intend to do?”
“Protect you.”
My mother's voice cut through the room.
“Liar.”
Ryan looked at her.
“You know it's true.”
“No.”
She raised the gun again.
“You were always his son.”
Ryan's expression changed.
“My son?”
“Yes.”
She looked at me.
“He was raised to believe he was Richard's heir.”
Then she looked at Ryan.
“But he wasn't.”
Ryan stared at her.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because I was there when they created you.”
Silence.
Ryan looked horrified.
“Created?”
My mother nodded.
“You weren't born the way you think you were.”
Catherine stepped forward.
“Enough.”
My mother fired.
The gunshot exploded through the room.
The Second Shot
Catherine collapsed.
“Mom!”
I ran toward her.
Ryan grabbed my arm.
“Don't!”
Blood spread across Catherine's shoulder.
She was alive.
Barely.
My mother raised the gun again.
Ryan stepped in front of me.
“Stop.”
She looked at him.
“You're still protecting her.”
“Yes.”
“Even now?”
“Yes.”
“Then you really are like your father.”
Ryan's face hardened.
“No.”
“I am nothing like him.”
My mother smiled.
“You don't know who you are.”
Ryan froze.
She lowered the gun.
“Ask him.”
She pointed toward my father.
He had entered the room.
He looked at Ryan.
Then at me.
And finally said:
“She is telling the truth.”
Ryan's face went pale.
“Tell me.”
My father sighed.
“You weren't born naturally.”
Ryan's hands trembled.
“Then what am I?”
My father looked at Catherine.
“A genetic heir.”
“What does that mean?”
“Catherine created the original Guardian system.”
He looked at me.
“You inherited her genetic markers naturally.”
Then at Ryan.
“Ryan was engineered using those same markers.”
I stared.
“So he's not my brother.”
“No.”
“Not my biological twin.”
“No.”
“Then what is he?”
My father whispered:
“The second half of the inheritance.”
Ryan looked devastated.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
“Because you were never supposed to know.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard wanted to use you.”
The Real Order
Ryan looked at my father.
“What was I ordered to do?”
My father hesitated.
“Tell her.”
Ryan looked at me.
“I was ordered to make you trust me.”
He paused.
“Then obtain your DNA.”
My blood went cold.
“My DNA?”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“To activate Guardian.”
“So our marriage…”
“Wasn't just about the inheritance.”
“What was it?”
“You were the key.”
“And you?”
“The lock.”
I stared at him.
“You married me because you needed my DNA.”
“Yes.”
“And did you get it?”
Ryan's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
My heart shattered.
“How?”
He looked down.
“The first night we met.”
I froze.
“What did you do?”
“I took a glass you drank from.”
I stepped backward.
“You stole my DNA.”
“Yes.”
“And gave it to Richard.”
“Yes.”
I couldn't speak.
Then Ryan whispered:
“But I never gave him the final sample.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because by then I knew what he intended to do.”
“What?”
“He wanted to eliminate you after the trust activated.”
Silence.
Ryan continued.
“So I destroyed the sample.”
My mother laughed.
“You think that makes you innocent?”
“No.”
Ryan looked at her.
“It doesn't.”
Then he turned toward me.
“But it means the last thing I did for Richard was betray him.”
The Final Lie
I wiped my tears.
“There is still something you're not telling me.”
Ryan didn't answer.
“What was your final order?”
He looked at the clock.
11:51 PM.
Nine minutes.
He whispered:
“To kill you.”
The room went silent.
My father's face hardened.
Catherine closed her eyes.
My mother smiled.
I stared at Ryan.
“When?”
“Tonight.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who gave you the order?”
“Richard.”
“But he's dead.”
Ryan looked at me.
“He gave it to me six years ago.”
“What changed?”
Ryan reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small recording device.
He pressed play.
Richard's voice filled the room.
“If Olivia reaches the seventh year, kill her before midnight.”
I felt sick.
The recording continued.
“Her death will transfer the trust to Ryan.”
Ryan stopped it.
I stared at him.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“For six years?”
“Yes.”
“And you stayed with me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because I couldn't kill you.”
My voice broke.
“So what were you planning to do?”
“Disappear.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
I stared.
“You were going to leave me?”
“To keep you alive.”
“But the trust?”
“I planned to make sure it went to you.”
“And you?”
“I'd take the blame.”
I couldn't breathe.
“You were going to let them kill you.”
“Yes.”
I stared at the man I thought I knew.
For seven years, he'd lied to me.
But tonight, his final lie had been different.
He hadn't lied to protect himself.
He'd lied because he believed sacrificing himself was the only way to save me.
Then my mother whispered:
“You're both fools.”
I turned.
She was smiling.
“Because Richard's order doesn't matter anymore.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
She looked at the clock.
11:59 PM.
“One minute.”
The lights suddenly came on.
Every screen in the mansion displayed a new message.
SEVENTH YEAR COMPLETE.
Then:
PRIMARY HEIR CONFIRMED.
Then:
OLIVIA VALE.
Ryan stared at the screen.
My father smiled through his tears.
Catherine whispered:
“She did it.”
But a final message appeared.
SECONDARY HEIR: UNKNOWN.
Ryan looked at me.
“What?”
The screen changed again.
A photograph appeared.
A man I had never seen before.
Underneath:
HEIR THREE — ACTIVATED.
My blood froze.
Then a name appeared.
DANIEL VALE.
I turned toward the doorway.
Daniel stood there.
But he wasn't alone.
Beside him stood a young woman.
She looked exactly like me.
Same eyes.
Same face.
Same smile.
Daniel looked at us.
“I'm sorry.”
He took her hand.
“But you were never the only heir.”
The woman stepped forward.
And whispered:
“Hello, Olivia.”
May you like
Then she smiled.
“I'm your sister.”
