Chapter 14 — The Last Test

Chapter 14 — The Last Test

The photograph was still in my hand when the mansion doors opened.

Denise walked in.

No lawyers.

No security guards.

No expression of defeat.

She looked strangely calm.

Ryan immediately stepped in front of me.

“You're supposed to be under investigation.”

Denise smiled.

“So are you.”

Agent Harris appeared behind her.

“Mrs. Anderson, you're not leaving this property.”

Denise turned.

“I didn't come here to leave.”

Her eyes moved to me.

“I came to finish what I started.”

I felt a chill.

“Where is the real Ryan?”

Ryan went completely still.

Denise smiled.

“That's the question, isn't it?”

The Last Test

Denise placed a small black envelope on the table.

“Your grandmother created one final condition.”

I didn't touch it.

“What condition?”

“To determine which heir is worthy.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“You've been saying that for years.”

“This time, it's real.”

Agent Harris stepped forward.

“What is inside the envelope?”

“A test.”

I opened it.

Inside was a single document.

FINAL SUCCESSION TEST

Below it:

The primary heir must voluntarily surrender control of the Anderson Trust.

I looked at Denise.

“Why would I do that?”

“Because the person you love will lose everything if you don't.”

I turned toward Ryan.

Denise smiled.

“Choose.”

Ryan shook his head.

“Don't.”

Denise continued.

“If Olivia refuses, Ryan loses every asset connected to the Anderson name.”

I stared at the document.

“And if I sign?”

“Your control ends.”

“Who gets it?”

Denise's smile widened.

“The rightful heir.”

Agent Harris immediately said:

“Don't sign anything.”

Denise looked at her.

“You're too late.”

She pulled out another document.

“Because Olivia already agreed.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Denise placed a recording on the table.

My voice came from the speaker.

“I agree to surrender the trust.”

I froze.

It sounded exactly like me.

But I had never said those words.

Ryan looked at me.

“They forged your voice.”

Denise smiled.

“Prove it.”

The Trap

Agent Harris examined the recording.

“This is manipulated.”

Denise shrugged.

“Then prove the manipulation in court.”

She looked at me.

“You have forty-eight hours.”

“For what?”

“To transfer everything.”

“Or?”

She leaned closer.

“Ryan goes to prison.”

My blood ran cold.

“What crime?”

“Financial fraud.”

Ryan stared at her.

“You framed me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you were always the easiest one to sacrifice.”

Ryan stepped forward.

I grabbed his arm.

“Don't.”

Denise smiled.

“Good.”

She turned toward the door.

Then stopped.

“Oh, Olivia?”

I looked at her.

“You still haven't discovered the final account.”

She left.

The Account

We searched the records for hours.

Nothing.

Then Sophie found it.

A dormant account.

Opened twenty-nine years ago.

Beneficiary:

OLIVIA VALE.

Secondary beneficiary:

RYAN VALE.

I stared.

“Ryan Vale?”

Daniel nodded.

“That's his original legal identity.”

“Why was it changed?”

“Because Richard needed him to become an Anderson.”

I looked at the account balance.

It contained only one dollar.

I laughed.

“That was the secret account?”

“No.”

Sophie pointed to the attached trust clause.

ACCESS REQUIRES FINAL SUCCESSION TEST.

My smile disappeared.

“What does it unlock?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Everything.”

The Real Choice

The next morning, Agent Harris brought us to the courthouse.

Denise was already there.

Her lawyers surrounded her.

She looked confident.

“You're going to lose,” she told me.

I didn't answer.

The judge entered.

The hearing began.

Denise presented the forged recording.

Then the forged signature.

Then financial documents suggesting that I had secretly transferred millions.

Everything looked convincing.

Until Ryan stood.

“I have something to say.”

His lawyer grabbed his arm.

“Don't.”

Ryan pulled free.

“I was ordered to destroy Olivia.”

The courtroom went silent.

He continued.

“I lied to her.”

He admitted everything.

The first meeting.

The stolen DNA.

Richard's orders.

The plan to take control of the trust.

The fake pregnancy.

Every detail.

Denise's expression changed.

“You idiot.”

Ryan looked at her.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I was a coward.”

Then he turned toward the judge.

“But I'm not going to let them destroy her anymore.”

The judge asked:

“Do you have evidence?”

Ryan nodded.

“Yes.”

He produced a recording.

Richard's voice.

Denise's voice.

And a third voice.

The woman behind the entire operation.

The recording played.

“If Ryan refuses, eliminate Olivia.”

Denise stood.

“That recording is fabricated!”

Agent Harris shook her head.

“No.”

She held up the forensic report.

“We verified it.”

Denise's face went pale.

The judge ordered her detained.

But Denise laughed.

“You think you've won?”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

She shook her head.

“You still don't understand the final test.”

The Final Door

That night, I returned to the mansion.

The black box was waiting on the table.

Sophie stood beside it.

“Open it.”

Inside was one final key.

A brass key engraved with my name.

I inserted it into the hidden door beneath the mansion.

The door opened.

Inside was a vault.

And inside the vault—

the original Guardian trust.

But there was something else.

A letter from Catherine.

I opened it.

Olivia,

If you have reached this room, you have already passed the test.

The test was never about money.

It was about whether you would surrender power to save someone you love.

The heir who chooses power is unworthy.

The heir who chooses love becomes the true controller.

I looked at Ryan.

He was standing in the doorway.

I smiled.

“So that's it.”

He nodded.

“You could have signed everything away.”

“But I didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Ryan walked toward me.

“Because you finally understood that you don't have to choose between love and power.”

I looked at the trust.

The final page contained one sentence:

CONTROL IS VALID ONLY WHEN VOLUNTARILY SHARED.

I signed.

Ryan signed beside me.

Sophie added her signature.

The vault doors opened.

Every frozen account was restored.

Every fraudulent transfer was reversed.

The Anderson fortune returned to the trust.

But Denise's name disappeared completely.

The Last Thing Denise Could Take

Three weeks later, Denise stood before the court.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Fraud.

Forgery.

Conspiracy.

Financial manipulation.

Her empire was gone.

Her accounts were frozen.

Her properties were seized.

And the family name she'd spent decades protecting had become a headline.

But she still had one weapon.

She looked at me across the courtroom.

“You'll never have peace.”

I smiled.

“Maybe not.”

She leaned closer.

“Because there is still someone who wants you dead.”

I didn't react.

“Who?”

Denise smiled.

“Your father.”

My blood froze.

I turned.

My father was standing at the back of the courtroom.

He looked at me.

Then he lowered his head.

He wasn't angry.

He was crying.

Denise laughed.

“Ask him what he did twenty-nine years ago.”

The guards took her away.

I walked toward my father.

“What did you do?”

He looked at me.

“I made the greatest mistake of my life.”

“What mistake?”

He handed me a photograph.

It showed Catherine.

My mother.

Daniel.

Richard.

And another man.

The original owner of Guardian.

The same woman I'd seen in the photograph.

My father whispered:

“Your real mother isn't Elena.”

I stared.

“Then who?”

He looked toward the courtroom doors.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Elegant.

Completely unfamiliar.

Except for her eyes.

My eyes.

She smiled.

And said:

“Hello, Olivia.”

My father whispered:

“Meet the woman who owns Guardian.”

The woman stepped forward.

“I've been waiting twenty-nine years to meet my daughter.”

I looked at Ryan.

He took my hand.

And for the first time, I realized something.

May you like

Denise had lost.

But the final secret of our family had only just been revealed.
