Chapter 13 — The Fall of the Family

Chapter 13 — The Fall of the Family

The gunshot echoed through the mansion.

For one frozen second, nobody moved.

Then I ran.

“Dad!”

Ryan was right behind me.

We tore through the hallway toward the east wing. Daniel shouted something behind us, but I couldn't hear him over the pounding of my heart.

The door at the end of the corridor was open.

My father's chair had been overturned.

The curtains were moving in the cold night air.

But there was no body.

No blood.

Nothing.

Ryan stopped beside me.

“It was a recording.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“The gunshot.”

He pointed toward the ceiling.

“Listen.”

A faint mechanical clicking came from the security system.

The sound had been transmitted through the speakers.

Someone wanted us to believe my father had been shot.

They wanted us frightened.

They wanted us to make a decision.

I clenched my fists.

“They're trying to rush us.”

Daniel appeared behind us.

“And whoever is doing it knows exactly how we think.”

Sophie looked at the security monitor.

“No.”

She pointed at the screen.

“They know everything.”

The Board Meeting

At 7:00 the next morning, the Guardian board received an anonymous package.

It contained everything.

Bank transfers.

Forged signatures.

Security footage.

DNA reports.

The marriage agreement.

Vanessa's fake pregnancy documents.

Records showing the manipulation of Ryan's fortune.

And most importantly—

the original Guardian trust.

The board members had no idea who had sent it.

But they knew one thing.

If the documents were genuine, the entire Anderson empire was built on fraud.

At 7:15, the first board member called me.

“Mrs. Anderson?”

“Yes.”

“This is Jonathan Reed.”

I knew him.

He had served on the Guardian board for twelve years.

“What happened?”

“I need you to come to headquarters.”

“Why?”

He hesitated.

“Because we're holding an emergency meeting.”

“About what?”

His voice dropped.

“Your family.”

When I arrived, the boardroom was already full.

Executives.

Lawyers.

Accountants.

Independent directors.

And reporters waiting outside the building.

I stopped.

“How did the press get here?”

Jonathan looked at me.

“They received the same evidence.”

My stomach tightened.

“All of it?”

“Yes.”

“Who sent it?”

“We don't know.”

I entered the room.

Ryan followed.

Every conversation stopped.

A screen behind the chairman displayed a single sentence:

GUARDIAN INVESTIGATION — EMERGENCY SESSION

Jonathan stood.

“Olivia, before we begin, I want to make something clear.”

“What?”

“No one in this room is protecting the Anderson family anymore.”

I nodded.

“Good.”

He looked at Ryan.

“And no one is protecting you either.”

Ryan took a breath.

“Then let's tell the truth.”

The Evidence

The first video played.

Vanessa entered the mansion wearing the artificial pregnancy device.

The board watched in silence as she was instructed by someone outside the frame.

Then came the financial records.

Millions moved between shell companies.

Payments to private investigators.

Payments to former employees.

Payments to doctors.

Payments to people who had been instructed to falsify medical records.

Then came the marriage documents.

Jonathan paused the presentation.

“This clause appears to have been deliberately concealed from both parties.”

Ryan looked at me.

“I didn't know.”

“I believe you.”

The next document appeared.

TRUST CONTROLLER: OLIVIA VALE.

Several directors gasped.

One stood.

“Then Ryan Anderson never controlled the Anderson fortune?”

Jonathan shook his head.

“No.”

A lawyer spoke.

“He was a beneficiary.”

“Correct.”

“And Olivia was the successor controller.”

“Correct.”

Another director asked:

“Who established this trust?”

The room became silent.

I answered.

“Catherine Vale.”

Nobody spoke.

Then one director whispered:

“She's supposed to be dead.”

“She isn't.”

The room erupted.

The Media Arrives

By noon, the story had exploded.

Every major news network carried the same headline:

BILLION-DOLLAR DYNASTY ACCUSED OF FRAUD AND SECRET INHERITANCE MANIPULATION

Another:

WHO REALLY CONTROLS THE ANDERSON FORTUNE?

Then:

MYSTERIOUS TRUST MAY INVALIDATE DECADES OF FAMILY WEALTH

The photographs spread online.

Ryan.

Me.

Vanessa.

Denise.

Richard.

Catherine.

Everyone.

Our private lives became public property.

The same people who had once envied our mansion now demanded answers.

Reporters surrounded the headquarters.

Police vehicles appeared outside.

Investigators entered carrying boxes.

I watched from the window.

Ryan stood beside me.

“It's over.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“What?”

“It's beginning.”

The Authorities

Two hours later, federal investigators arrived.

The lead investigator introduced herself as Agent Harris.

She placed her credentials on the table.

“We are investigating possible financial fraud, identity fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction.”

Ryan nodded.

“Do you have evidence?”

Agent Harris looked at him.

“We have more than enough to begin.”

She turned toward me.

“Mrs. Anderson, we need your cooperation.”

“You'll have it.”

“Even if the investigation implicates your family?”

I didn't hesitate.

“Especially then.”

She nodded.

“That may be the reason we're here.”

She opened a folder.

“Someone has been moving money through offshore accounts for years.”

I looked at the documents.

“Whose accounts?”

“Denise Anderson.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

His mother's name appeared beside millions in unexplained transfers.

Then another name.

Eleanor Vale.

Then another.

Richard Anderson.

And finally—

Margaret Vale.

Agent Harris looked at me.

“We believe these individuals were coordinating.”

“But Richard is dead.”

“Yes.”

“And Margaret?”

“Missing.”

“Eleanor?”

“Also missing.”

Ryan looked at the documents.

“What about my mother?”

Agent Harris paused.

“We haven't located her yet.”

I felt a chill.

Denise's Last Move

At 4:30 PM, Denise appeared on live television.

She sat in a studio surrounded by lawyers.

Her face was calm.

Almost elegant.

She looked directly into the camera.

“I have been falsely accused.”

Ryan watched from the boardroom.

“She'll lie.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“What?”

“She won't lie.”

I looked at the screen.

“She'll tell just enough truth to make everyone doubt us.”

Denise began speaking.

“I admit that I arranged for Vanessa to enter Ryan's life.”

The room went silent.

“But I did so because I believed Olivia was manipulating my son.”

I laughed bitterly.

There it was.

The reversal.

“She is dangerous,” Denise continued.

“She has attempted to seize control of billions through a fraudulent trust.”

The reporters began shouting questions.

Denise smiled.

“I am not the criminal.”

She leaned closer to the camera.

“I am the victim.”

Ryan stood.

“She's insane.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I looked at the board.

“She knows exactly what she's doing.”

Then the screen changed.

A document appeared.

Denise had released it herself.

It was the marriage agreement.

But there was something different.

A signature appeared at the bottom.

Mine.

I stared.

“I never signed that.”

Jonathan looked at the lawyers.

“Is it authentic?”

The lawyer examined it.

“Yes.”

My heart stopped.

“How?”

The lawyer looked at me.

“It appears your signature was digitally reproduced.”

I understood.

Someone had created a fake signature to make it appear that I had voluntarily transferred control of the trust.

Denise wasn't trying to prove she was innocent.

She was building a case against me.

The Woman Who Finally Spoke

Then Vanessa walked into the boardroom.

Everyone turned.

She was carrying a folder.

“I can prove the signature is fake.”

Denise's lawyer immediately called the police.

Vanessa raised her hands.

“I have evidence.”

Agent Harris approached her.

“What evidence?”

Vanessa opened the folder.

“Original instructions.”

She placed several documents on the table.

Emails.

Recordings.

Payment records.

And a handwritten note.

I recognized the handwriting.

Denise.

The note read:

Make Olivia sign. If she refuses, use the duplicate.

Agent Harris photographed it.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I'm sorry.”

I stared at her.

“You should have told me.”

“I was afraid.”

“I know.”

She began crying.

“But I'm done being afraid.”

Then she handed Agent Harris a second envelope.

“This is everything Denise gave me.”

Agent Harris opened it.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

Vanessa pointed at the last page.

“Read the name.”

Agent Harris did.

Then looked at Ryan.

“This changes everything.”

The Name on the Account

The final document was a bank authorization.

The account holder wasn't Denise.

It wasn't Richard.

It wasn't Eleanor.

It wasn't Margaret.

It was:

CATHERINE VALE.

But beneath her name was another authorized controller.

OLIVIA VALE.

I stared.

Agent Harris frowned.

“When was this account opened?”

“Twenty-nine years ago.”

The same year Ryan was created.

Ryan stepped closer.

“How much is in it?”

The lawyer looked at the statement.

Then went silent.

I asked:

“How much?”

He finally answered.

“Approximately forty-eight billion dollars.”

Nobody moved.

Forty-eight billion.

A hidden fortune.

Outside the family balance sheets.

Outside Guardian.

Outside the Anderson accounts.

And apparently under my control.

I looked at Catherine.

She was standing in the doorway.

Alive.

Calm.

Watching everything.

She smiled.

“You finally found it.”

Agent Harris immediately reached for her weapon.

“Catherine Vale?”

Catherine raised her hands.

“I expected you.”

“You're under arrest.”

Catherine smiled.

“Not yet.”

She looked at me.

“Because before you arrest me, you should know where that money came from.”

I stared at her.

“Where?”

“Your father.”

“My father?”

She nodded.

“He didn't build the Anderson fortune.”

“He stole it.”

The room fell silent.

Catherine continued.

“He stole it from me.”

The Empire Falls

By midnight, the board voted unanimously.

Denise was removed from every position.

The Anderson family's voting rights were suspended.

Multiple accounts were frozen.

Guardian's independent directors took temporary control.

Investigators seized documents from three family properties.

The media camped outside the mansion.

And the stock price of every company connected to the family collapsed.

Ryan watched the news in silence.

“What happens now?”

I looked at him.

“We tell the truth.”

“And us?”

I smiled sadly.

“I don't know.”

He nodded.

For once, he didn't try to convince me.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke.

“You think the family has fallen.”

“Who is this?”

“You've exposed the Andersons.”

“Who are you?”

“You've exposed Guardian.”

The voice paused.

“But you haven't exposed me.”

I looked at Ryan.

“Where are you?”

A quiet laugh.

“Look outside.”

I went to the window.

Across the street, a black car waited beneath a streetlamp.

Someone was sitting inside.

Then the headlights turned on.

The car drove away.

The caller spoke one final sentence.

“Your father lied about the fortune.”

The line went dead.

I lowered the phone.

Ryan stared at me.

“What did he say?”

I looked toward the empty street.

“He said the fortune was stolen.”

Ryan frowned.

“From Catherine?”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“From someone else.”

Then I noticed something on the desk.

A photograph.

It hadn't been there before.

I picked it up.

It showed Catherine standing beside a man.

I recognized him immediately.

Richard Anderson.

But between them stood another person.

A young woman.

On the back, someone had written:

THE ORIGINAL OWNER.

And beneath that:

SHE IS STILL ALIVE.

I turned the photograph over again.

The woman's face was clear.

I knew her.

I had seen her before.

She was the woman who had been sitting quietly in the courtroom gallery during the board hearing.

The woman everyone had ignored.

The woman who had watched our family collapse without saying a word.

And suddenly I understood.

May you like

The fall of the family wasn't the end of the conspiracy.

It was the beginning of the final one.
