Chapter 12 — The Secret Trust

Chapter 12 — The Secret Trust
The woman standing beside Daniel looked so much like me that my first instinct was to step backward.
Same dark eyes.
Same shape of face.
Even the tiny scar above the left eyebrow that I'd had since childhood.
But there was one difference.
She looked at me as if she already knew everything.
“Who are you?” I asked.
She smiled faintly.
“My name is Sophie.”
Ryan stared at Daniel.
“You said she was my sister.”
Daniel nodded.
“She is.”
Ryan looked at me.
“Then why does she look like Olivia?”
Daniel's expression became grim.
“Because she isn't your sister.”
The room fell silent.
I felt dizzy.
Sophie looked at me.
“She is.”
Daniel corrected himself.
“She's Olivia's genetic sister.”
Ryan frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Sophie did.
“It means Catherine created three heirs.”
I looked at her.
“Three?”
She nodded.
“Olivia was the first.”
She pointed toward Ryan.
“He was the second.”
Then she touched her chest.
“And I was the third.”
My heart pounded.
“What was the purpose?”
“To make sure Guardian could never be controlled by one person.”
I looked toward the screens.
The message still displayed:
PRIMARY HEIR: OLIVIA VALE
SECONDARY HEIR: UNKNOWN
I turned toward Daniel.
“Why doesn't it recognize her?”
“Because the third heir was never supposed to activate.”
“Why?”
“Because the third heir wasn't created to control Guardian.”
Sophie looked at me.
“She was created to destroy it.”
The Fortune That Wasn't His
Ryan suddenly spoke.
“Forget Guardian for a moment.”
Everyone looked at him.
“What about my fortune?”
I turned toward him.
“What do you mean?”
“My money.”
He looked at Daniel.
“My companies. My accounts. My properties.”
Daniel nodded.
“They aren't yours.”
Ryan stared.
“What?”
“Not legally.”
Ryan laughed.
“That's impossible.”
“You've always believed they were yours.”
“They are.”
“No.”
Daniel walked toward the desk.
“Ryan, you've never owned the majority of your fortune.”
He opened a file.
“Your name appears on the accounts.”
Ryan looked at the documents.
“Exactly.”
“Beneficiary.”
Daniel pointed to another line.
“Not owner.”
Ryan's expression changed.
I stepped closer.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel opened a second file.
“The Anderson fortune has always been held by a private trust.”
“Whose trust?”
“Catherine's.”
I looked at Ryan.
“So his billions…”
“Were never controlled by Ryan.”
Ryan stared at the papers.
“Then who controls them?”
Daniel looked at me.
“You do.”
Silence.
I felt my stomach drop.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
Ryan shook his head.
“That can't be true.”
Daniel turned the document around.
At the bottom was a signature.
Mine.
But I had never signed it.
I stared.
“When was this?”
“Seven years ago.”
“The day I married Ryan?”
“Yes.”
I looked at Ryan.
He looked just as shocked as I was.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“Then who signed it?”
Daniel pointed to the signature.
“Catherine.”
The Marriage Wasn't What We Thought
My hands trembled.
“So my marriage contract…”
“Wasn't a marriage contract.”
I looked at Daniel.
“What was it?”
“A transfer agreement.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“Transfer of what?”
“Control.”
Daniel placed three documents side by side.
The first:
MARRIAGE AGREEMENT.
The second:
GUARDIAN TRUST AGREEMENT.
The third:
ANDERSON FAMILY ASSET TRUST.
They were connected.
Ryan stared at them.
“Why would my fortune be transferred to Olivia?”
“Because Richard knew you couldn't control it.”
Ryan's jaw tightened.
“He told me I owned everything.”
“He lied.”
I looked at Daniel.
“Why?”
“Because if Ryan believed he owned the fortune, he would never question the trust.”
“And if he divorced me?”
Daniel looked at Ryan.
“He'd lose access.”
Ryan went pale.
“That was why Richard wanted me to divorce her after seven years.”
“Yes.”
Everything suddenly made sense.
The affair allegations.
Vanessa.
The fake pregnancy.
The pressure to leave.
The constant threats.
Richard hadn't wanted Ryan to take Olivia's inheritance.
He wanted Ryan to separate Olivia from the trust.
Because Olivia was the real controller.
And Ryan's wealth had been designed as bait.
The Account Nobody Could Touch
Ryan demanded access to his private banking records.
Daniel shook his head.
“You can't.”
“Why?”
“Because you don't have authority.”
Ryan laughed.
“I have billions.”
“You have billions assigned to your name.”
“That sounds like ownership.”
“It isn't.”
Daniel handed him another document.
“Try transferring ten million dollars.”
Ryan stared.
“Why?”
“Because you won't be able to.”
He called his banker.
“Transfer ten million to my personal account.”
There was silence on the other end.
Then:
“I'm sorry, Mr. Anderson. We can't process that request.”
Ryan's face went white.
“Why?”
“The trustee has declined authorization.”
“Who is the trustee?”
The banker hesitated.
“I can't disclose that.”
Ryan slammed the phone down.
“Who controls my money?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Olivia.”
I stared at him.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I've never accessed those accounts.”
“You weren't supposed to.”
“Then why am I the trustee?”
“Because Catherine designed it that way.”
I looked at the documents.
My name wasn't listed as the trustee.
It was listed as:
Ultimate Beneficiary and Successor Controller.
Ryan looked at me.
“So everything I've spent my life believing was mine…”
“Was held for you.”
“But controlled by someone else.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Your wife.”
Ryan's expression broke.
The Hidden Clause
Sophie stepped toward us.
“There is one problem.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“The trust has a condition.”
“What condition?”
She pointed toward the document.
“Olivia can't control the assets alone.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the founder believed absolute power would corrupt the heir.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“Finally, something reasonable.”
Sophie continued.
“The controller needs a counterpart.”
I looked at Ryan.
“Him?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at me.
“Me.”
Silence.
I stared at her.
“What?”
“That's why I was created.”
Daniel nodded.
“The third heir is the counter-signatory.”
“If I refuse?”
“The trust freezes.”
“And if she dies?”
“It freezes permanently.”
I stared at Sophie.
“So you can destroy Ryan's fortune.”
“Yes.”
“Mine too.”
“Yes.”
“And Guardian.”
“Yes.”
I suddenly understood why someone had tried so hard to find her.
She wasn't simply another heir.
She was the emergency shutdown.
The Woman Behind the Conspiracy
I looked at Daniel.
“Who knew about Sophie?”
“Catherine.”
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“Ryan?”
“No.”
Ryan shook his head.
“I swear.”
I believed him.
For the first time, I understood the strange behavior surrounding our marriage.
Everyone had been trying to control Ryan because they believed he controlled the fortune.
But Ryan had been a prisoner too.
His billions were a cage.
His marriage was a lock.
And I was the key.
I looked at Sophie.
“Then who has been trying to kill us?”
She didn't answer.
Instead, she opened a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A woman stood beside Catherine.
I recognized her immediately.
My mother.
But Sophie pointed to the other woman.
“That is the person who has been controlling everything.”
I stared.
It wasn't Margaret.
It wasn't Eleanor.
It wasn't Vanessa.
It wasn't Catherine.
It was someone I knew.
Someone who had been in our house.
Someone who had hugged me when I cried.
Someone who had told me Ryan didn't deserve me.
Someone I had trusted completely.
I whispered her name.
“Denise.”
Ryan's mother.
Sophie nodded.
“She has known about the trust for twenty years.”
My heart sank.
“But Denise is just Ryan's mother.”
“No.”
Sophie looked at Ryan.
“She isn't your mother.”
Ryan froze.
“What?”
“She adopted you.”
“Why?”
“To get access to the Anderson fortune.”
Ryan stared at her.
“Then who am I?”
Sophie didn't answer.
Daniel did.
“You're not an Anderson.”
Ryan's face went pale.
“You're a Vale.”
Silence.
“And the man you called your father…”
Daniel paused.
“…was never your father.”
Ryan's voice cracked.
“Then who was?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Your biological father.”
I stared.
“Who?”
He finally answered.
“Me.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
The revelation we'd been running from had finally arrived.
Daniel was his biological father.
And Denise had spent twenty years pretending otherwise.
But before anyone could speak, my phone rang.
The caller ID showed:
DENISE.
I answered.
Her voice was strangely calm.
“Olivia.”
I said nothing.
“You've discovered the trust.”
“Yes.”
“And you've discovered Ryan isn't an Anderson.”
“Yes.”
A pause.
Then she laughed.
“You think you've won.”
“No.”
I looked at Ryan.
“I think you're afraid.”
Silence.
Then Denise whispered:
“You should be.”
A loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone turned.
Sophie grabbed my arm.
“What was that?”
I didn't know.
Then every screen in the mansion lit up.
A live video appeared.
Denise was sitting in a dark room.
Beside her stood my father.
His hands were tied.
And behind him was a man I had never seen before.
Denise smiled at the camera.
“You have thirty minutes.”
My heart stopped.
“Thirty minutes for what?”
She leaned closer.
“To choose which inheritance survives.”
The screen changed.
Three options appeared:
OLIVIA'S TRUST.
RYAN'S FORTUNE.
GUARDIAN.
Then a final line appeared beneath them.
ONLY ONE CAN REMAIN.
Ryan looked at me.
“What happens if we choose wrong?”
The screen displayed Denise's final message:
Someone you love dies.
The video went black.
May you like
And from upstairs came another sound.
A gunshot.
