Chapter 11 — The Recording

Chapter 11 — The Recording
The phone went dead.
Ethan stared at the screen.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Emily had found Sophie.
Emily was alive.
Sophie was alive.
But someone was with them.
Someone Ethan had believed was dead.
His father.
Ethan slowly lowered the phone.
“No.”
Michael looked at him.
“You heard him too?”
“I heard a man's voice.”
“You think it was your father.”
“I know that voice.”
Michael didn't argue.
Ethan turned toward the warehouse.
“Search everything.”
“We already did.”
“Then search again.”
“For what?”
“Anything that belonged to David.”
Michael nodded.
They began tearing through the warehouse.
Old boxes.
Documents.
Broken computers.
Burned photographs.
Nothing.
Then Ethan saw something beneath the overturned table.
A small black recorder.
He picked it up.
There was a label on the back.
EMILY — FINAL
His heart stopped.
“Michael.”
Michael came closer.
“Play it.”
Ethan pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then Emily's voice.
“If you're hearing this, Ethan, I'm probably already gone.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Her voice sounded tired.
But calm.
“I don't know whether you'll ever forgive me.”
A pause.
“But you deserve the truth.”
Ethan opened his eyes.
“I lied to you.”
His jaw tightened.
“I lied about my disappearance.”
“I lied about Celeste.”
“I lied about Daniel.”
“And I lied about the night I died.”
Ethan whispered:
“Why?”
The recording continued.
“Because there was one person I was trying to protect.”
A pause.
“Sophie.”
Ethan's breathing slowed.
Emily continued.
“Your father didn't want Sophie dead.”
“He wanted her controlled.”
“That distinction matters.”
Ethan stared at the recorder.
“He needed her alive because the original trust could only be activated by her.”
“But that wasn't his biggest secret.”
Michael leaned closer.
Emily's voice became quieter.
“Your father didn't create the plan.”
“He inherited it.”
Ethan frowned.
“From whom?”
“Jonathan Vale.”
Silence.
Ethan looked at Michael.
Emily continued.
“Jonathan wasn't your father's lawyer.”
“He was his master.”
Ethan's eyes widened.
“He created the private network that controlled our family.”
“He arranged the marriages.”
“He manipulated the inheritance.”
“He selected the people who entered our lives.”
“Celeste was one of them.”
“David was one of them.”
“Daniel was one of them.”
“And I was supposed to become one of them.”
Ethan's hand tightened around the recorder.
“But I refused.”
The recording continued.
“I discovered Jonathan's existence after finding the original trust.”
“I thought your father was the architect.”
“I was wrong.”
“He was only the face.”
“Jonathan was the hand.”
Ethan stared at the floor.
“Then why did my father obey him?”
Emily answered the question herself.
“Because Jonathan owned the evidence.”
“He knew about Daniel.”
“He knew about your mother's murder.”
“He knew about the illegal transfer of the trust.”
“And he knew something even more dangerous.”
A pause.
“He knew Sophie wasn't the only child.”
Ethan froze.
Michael looked at him.
Emily continued.
“There was another child.”
“The child your father tried to erase.”
“The child Jonathan needed.”
“The child who could legally destroy the entire Brooks inheritance structure.”
Ethan's voice came out barely audible.
“Who?”
The recording crackled.
Then Emily said:
“Daniel's daughter.”
Ethan stared.
“What?”
Michael looked stunned.
Emily continued.
“She was born years before Sophie.”
“She was hidden.”
“Her identity was erased.”
“And Jonathan has spent years searching for her.”
Ethan's mind raced.
“If she's alive…”
“She is.”
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“But Celeste does.”
Ethan stopped the recording.
He looked at Michael.
“Celeste.”
Michael nodded.
“We need to find her.”
But before they could move, the recorder began playing again.
Emily had apparently programmed it to continue automatically.
“There is one thing you must understand.”
Ethan listened.
“Celeste never wanted Sophie for herself.”
“She was trying to protect her.”
“Everything she did looked like betrayal.”
“But it wasn't.”
“She was following my instructions.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I made her promise to lie to you.”
“I made her promise to take Sophie away if Jonathan found us.”
“I made her promise to let you hate her if necessary.”
A tear slipped down Ethan's cheek.
Emily continued:
“If you are angry with Celeste, be angry with me.”
“She saved Sophie's life.”
“She protected the evidence.”
“And when I disappeared…”
“She was the only person I trusted to keep Sophie alive.”
The recording paused.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“But Celeste made one mistake.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“She trusted the wrong person.”
The recording crackled.
“David Mercer.”
Ethan frowned.
“He wasn't Jonathan's servant.”
“He was mine.”
Ethan stared.
“David was helping me.”
“He was supposed to get me out.”
“He was supposed to take Sophie somewhere safe.”
“But someone intercepted him.”
“Someone changed the route.”
“Someone took the child.”
Ethan's heart pounded.
“Which child?”
Emily whispered:
“Daniel's daughter.”
The recording suddenly became distorted.
A man's voice appeared in the background.
Emily gasped.
Then:
“No.”
A door slammed.
Someone shouted.
The recording ended.
Ethan stared at the recorder.
“That's it?”
Michael checked the device.
“There may be another file.”
He connected it to a laptop.
One hidden audio file appeared.
TRACK 09.
Ethan opened it.
Emily's voice returned.
But this time she was whispering.
“If Jonathan finds me, he will tell you that Celeste betrayed me.”
“Don't believe him.”
“He will tell you that Daniel betrayed you.”
“Don't believe him.”
“He will tell you your father was acting alone.”
“Don't believe him.”
“He will tell you I abandoned you.”
“Don't believe him.”
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
“The enemy isn't the person standing in front of you.”
A long pause.
“The enemy is the person who makes everyone else look guilty.”
Ethan froze.
Emily whispered:
“Jonathan Vale.”
The recording stopped.
For several seconds, Ethan didn't move.
Then he stood.
“Find Celeste.”
Michael nodded.
“What about Daniel?”
“We find him too.”
“And Jonathan?”
Ethan looked at the dark warehouse.
“We stop running.”
They found Celeste three hours later.
She was hiding inside an abandoned church.
When Ethan entered, she immediately raised her hands.
“I didn't take Sophie.”
“I know.”
Celeste looked at him.
“What?”
“I heard the recording.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Emily left one?”
“Yes.”
Celeste closed her eyes.
“She promised she would.”
Ethan walked toward her.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Jonathan?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
“I don't know.”
“Where is Sophie?”
“I don't know.”
“Then what do you know?”
Celeste took a deep breath.
“I know where Daniel went.”
Ethan stared.
“Where?”
“To find his daughter.”
“What?”
Celeste nodded.
“Daniel never took Sophie.”
“He was trying to find the other child.”
Ethan's expression changed.
“Then who took Sophie?”
Celeste looked at him.
“Jonathan.”
The truth finally began fitting together.
Jonathan had manipulated the entire family.
He had allowed Ethan to believe Celeste was the enemy.
He had allowed Daniel to appear dangerous.
He had allowed David to appear guilty.
He had even allowed Ethan's father to appear like the mastermind.
Everyone had been a piece on the board.
And Jonathan had been moving them.
Ethan looked at Celeste.
“Where would he take Sophie?”
Celeste shook her head.
“Somewhere connected to the original trust.”
“The old estate?”
“No.”
“The nursery?”
“No.”
“Then where?”
Celeste looked at him.
“Your mother's house.”
Ethan froze.
“My mother's house was demolished.”
“No.”
“What?”
“Your father told everyone it was demolished.”
“But it wasn't.”
“Where is it?”
Celeste whispered the address.
Ethan knew the location.
A remote property outside Hartford.
He had never been there.
His father had forbidden it.
Ethan suddenly understood why.
They arrived after midnight.
The house was dark.
No lights.
No cars.
No guards.
Ethan entered through the back door.
The hallway smelled of dust.
Everything had been untouched for decades.
Photographs covered the walls.
His mother.
His father.
Daniel.
Ethan.
And one child Ethan had never seen.
A little girl.
Standing beside Daniel.
Ethan stared.
“That's her.”
Celeste nodded.
“Daniel's daughter.”
“What was her name?”
Celeste whispered:
“Anna.”
Ethan walked toward the photograph.
There was something written behind it.
He turned it over.
One sentence.
If Anna returns, the trust belongs to her.
Ethan stared.
Then he heard a sound upstairs.
A child's voice.
“Daddy?”
Ethan ran.
“Sophie!”
He reached the second floor.
A bedroom door stood open.
Inside was Sophie.
Alive.
Safe.
Crying.
Ethan rushed to her.
He pulled her into his arms.
“Oh, God.”
Sophie held him tightly.
“I knew you'd come.”
“Who brought you here?”
She pointed toward the window.
“A man.”
“Who?”
“He said his name was Grandpa.”
Ethan's heart stopped.
“Where is he?”
Sophie pointed toward the adjoining room.
Ethan opened the door.
Empty.
Only a chair.
And a photograph.
His father.
Alive.
Standing beside Jonathan Vale.
Ethan stared.
On the back of the photograph was a message.
You finally understand.
Then another line.
Now come find me.
Ethan's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke.
“Hello, Ethan.”
Ethan knew immediately.
Jonathan.
“You took my daughter.”
“I protected her.”
“Where is my father?”
“Closer than you think.”
“What do you want?”
“Nothing.”
Ethan frowned.
“Then why do this?”
Jonathan laughed.
“Because you still think this is about money.”
“What is it about?”
“The truth.”
Jonathan paused.
“Your father isn't the enemy.”
Ethan's blood froze.
“Then who is?”
Silence.
Then Jonathan said:
“Ask Emily what happened before she met you.”
The call ended.
Ethan stared at the phone.
Sophie clung to his hand.
Celeste stood behind him.
Michael looked confused.
And Ethan realized that the recording had answered one question—
but created another.
Emily had told him who the enemy was.
Jonathan Vale.
But Jonathan had just suggested that even Emily was hiding something.
Something from before their marriage.
Something connected to Sophie.
Something connected to Daniel.
And perhaps—
something that explained why Jonathan had spent years protecting the very child he claimed to want.
Ethan looked at Sophie.
She was holding the photograph of her mother.
He gently turned it over.
There was writing on the back.
A sentence Ethan had never seen before.
Ethan, if Jonathan tells you the truth about me, believe him.
Ethan's face went pale.
Because beneath it was another sentence.
But don't believe him when he tells you why.
The truth was no longer a straight line.
It was a maze.
And somewhere at its center was Emily.
The woman Ethan had spent years trying to save.
The woman who had saved Sophie.
The woman who had lied to him.
May you like
And perhaps—
the woman who had started the entire game.
