Chapter 13 — The Night the Mansion Burned

Chapter 13 — The Night the Mansion Burned
The message remained on Ethan's phone.
Come alone.
Bring the original trust.
And don't tell Emily.
He read it three times.
Then he deleted it.
Not because he intended to ignore it.
Because he knew someone was watching.
Robert was still alive, barely.
Michael had called an ambulance.
The mansion had become a fortress of fear.
Every hallway contained a secret.
Every person had a hidden motive.
And now Ethan's mother—who was supposed to have been dead for more than thirty years—had appeared in a photograph beside Sophie.
Ethan couldn't trust the evidence.
He couldn't trust the messages.
He couldn't trust his own family.
But there was one person he still needed to confront.
Celeste.
He found her in the nursery.
She was sitting beside Sophie's empty bed.
Her eyes were red.
“You knew.”
Celeste didn't turn.
“Knew what?”
“My mother is alive.”
Silence.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Look at me.”
Celeste slowly turned.
“I suspected.”
“You're lying.”
“No.”
“You've lied to me for years.”
Celeste looked exhausted.
“I lied because the truth would have killed you.”
“My mother is alive.”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
“I don't know.”
“Who is protecting her?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why does she have Sophie?”
Celeste's face changed.
“What?”
Ethan showed her the photograph.
Celeste stared.
Her hands began trembling.
“No.”
“You know her.”
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
Celeste whispered:
“Eleanor.”
“My mother?”
Celeste nodded.
“She isn't supposed to be alive.”
“Neither is half this family.”
Celeste closed her eyes.
“She has been hiding for thirty years.”
“From whom?”
“Your grandfather.”
Ethan stared.
“And now?”
“From Jonathan.”
“Then why take Sophie?”
“She didn't.”
Ethan frowned.
“Then who did?”
Celeste looked at him.
“I think I know.”
Before she could continue, every light in the mansion went out.
The darkness was absolute.
Sophie screamed from upstairs.
“Daddy!”
Ethan ran.
He reached the nursery.
The window was open.
The bed was empty.
“Sophie!”
No answer.
He searched the closet.
Bathroom.
Hallway.
Nothing.
Then smoke began pouring beneath the door.
Michael shouted from downstairs.
“FIRE!”
Ethan froze.
The mansion's alarm didn't activate.
Someone had disabled it.
A flame appeared in the hallway.
Then another.
The curtains caught fire.
Within seconds, the entire upper floor began filling with smoke.
“Celeste!”
She appeared at the staircase.
“Ethan!”
“Find Sophie!”
“I will!”
They split apart.
Ethan ran toward the west wing.
The fire was spreading unnaturally fast.
Too fast.
It wasn't an accident.
Someone had planned this.
He kicked open a door.
Nothing.
Another.
Empty.
Then he heard a faint cry.
“Daddy!”
He followed the sound.
It came from behind the library.
Ethan pulled away a burning curtain.
A hidden passage appeared.
He rushed inside.
At the end stood Sophie.
But she wasn't alone.
Celeste was holding her.
“Celeste!”
“I found her!”
“Give her to me!”
Celeste shook her head.
“Not yet.”
Ethan stopped.
“What are you doing?”
“Saving her.”
“Give me my daughter.”
“You don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
Celeste looked at the flames.
“Jonathan is coming.”
“Then we leave together.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You leave.”
“What?”
“I'll take Sophie.”
Ethan's expression hardened.
“You're not taking my daughter anywhere.”
“I have to.”
“Why?”
“Because they aren't after you.”
“They're after Sophie.”
“Yes.”
“Then she stays with me.”
Celeste's eyes filled with tears.
“That's exactly what they'll expect.”
A loud explosion shook the mansion.
The ceiling cracked.
Smoke filled the passage.
Celeste grabbed Sophie's hand.
“There's another exit.”
Ethan followed.
They reached the underground tunnel.
Celeste opened a steel door.
Cold air rushed inside.
“Sophie goes with me.”
Ethan blocked the doorway.
“No.”
Celeste stared at him.
“Trust me.”
“I trusted you once.”
“You have to trust me again.”
“You betrayed me.”
“I saved you.”
“You lied.”
“I protected you.”
“You stole my daughter.”
“I returned her.”
“Then don't take her again.”
Celeste looked at Sophie.
The little girl was crying.
“Daddy…”
Ethan reached for her.
“Come here.”
Sophie took one step.
Then stopped.
She looked at Celeste.
“Is she going to die?”
Ethan frowned.
“What?”
Sophie whispered:
“She said the bad people will kill Daddy if I stay.”
Ethan looked at Celeste.
“You told her that?”
Celeste shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who did?”
A voice came from the darkness.
“Me.”
Ethan turned.
A man stood at the far end of the tunnel.
Jonathan Vale.
He held a gun.
“Give me the child.”
Ethan stepped in front of Sophie.
“No.”
Jonathan smiled.
“Then we all die here.”
Celeste looked at Ethan.
“Now you understand.”
Jonathan raised the gun.
“Celeste.”
She froze.
“Do it.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Do what?”
Celeste's face became devastated.
She pulled a small device from her pocket.
A detonator.
Ethan stared.
“No.”
Celeste pressed the button.
An explosion shook the tunnel behind Jonathan.
The passage collapsed.
Jonathan disappeared beneath the debris.
Ethan grabbed Celeste.
“What did you do?”
“Bought us time.”
“You could have killed him.”
“I know.”
“Where's the exit?”
Celeste pointed.
“Through there.”
They ran.
They emerged outside the mansion.
Fire consumed the entire structure.
Windows exploded.
The roof collapsed.
The night sky turned orange.
Ethan looked around.
“Where's Sophie?”
Celeste was beside him.
“I thought she was with you.”
Ethan froze.
“No.”
He turned.
Sophie was gone.
Again.
“SOPHIE!”
He ran back toward the mansion.
Michael grabbed him.
“Ethan, it's collapsing!”
“My daughter is inside!”
“You can't go in!”
“LET ME GO!”
Ethan fought him.
Then he saw something.
A small figure near the tree line.
A woman.
Carrying a child.
Ethan's heart stopped.
“Mom?”
The woman turned.
Eleanor.
His mother.
She looked at him across the burning property.
Sophie was in her arms.
Ethan ran toward her.
“Mom!”
Eleanor shook her head.
“Don't follow me.”
“Give me my daughter!”
“She isn't yours to protect anymore.”
Ethan stopped.
“What?”
Eleanor looked at Sophie.
“She belongs to the bloodline.”
“She is my daughter.”
“I know.”
“Then give her to me.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
“Because if I give her back, they will kill her.”
“Who?”
She looked toward the burning mansion.
“Everyone.”
Then she turned.
Ethan chased her.
“Mom!”
She disappeared into the trees.
Ethan reached the road.
Nothing.
No car.
No footprints.
No Sophie.
Only smoke.
He dropped to his knees.
“No…”
Michael reached him.
“Ethan.”
“She took her.”
“Who?”
“My mother.”
Hours later, the mansion was nothing but ruins.
Firefighters searched the property.
No body was found.
No sign of Jonathan.
No sign of Eleanor.
No sign of Sophie.
Celeste sat on the ground, staring at the flames.
Ethan approached.
“You knew this would happen.”
Celeste looked up.
“No.”
“You knew my mother would come.”
“No.”
“You knew Sophie would disappear.”
“No.”
“Then what was your final plan?”
Celeste closed her eyes.
“To burn the mansion.”
Ethan stared.
“Why?”
“Because there was something beneath it.”
“What?”
“The original archive.”
“What archive?”
“Everything.”
She pointed toward the ruins.
“Your grandfather kept records beneath the mansion.”
“Records of what?”
“Every crime.”
“Every payment.”
“Every child.”
“Every identity.”
“Every death.”
Ethan looked at her.
“And the fire destroyed it.”
Celeste shook her head.
“No.”
“Then what happened?”
“I moved it.”
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
“Where?”
Celeste looked toward the road.
“Your mother has it.”
Ethan's heart sank.
“So the fire was a distraction.”
“Yes.”
“And Sophie?”
Celeste looked at him.
“She was the key.”
Ethan clenched his fists.
“You planned this.”
“I planned for Sophie to disappear.”
His expression hardened.
“You what?”
Celeste began crying.
“I knew they would come for her.”
“So you let them take her?”
“I gave them the illusion that they had won.”
“That's insane.”
“It was the only way.”
“You took my daughter away from me.”
“To keep her alive.”
“You don't get to decide that.”
“I know.”
Celeste lowered her head.
“But Emily did.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
Celeste looked at him.
“Emily gave me the final instructions.”
“When?”
“Before she disappeared.”
“What did she say?”
Celeste whispered:
“If the mansion burns…”
She paused.
“If Sophie disappears…”
Another pause.
“Then Ethan will finally be ready to learn the truth.”
Ethan stared.
“What truth?”
Celeste reached into her coat.
She removed a small envelope.
It carried Emily's handwriting.
Ethan took it.
His hands trembled as he opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Ethan.
Emily.
Sophie.
And another child.
A boy.
Ethan stared at the child.
He looked familiar.
Too familiar.
Emily had written beneath the photograph:
Your son.
Ethan's heart stopped.
His eyes moved to the second sentence.
The child you believe belongs to Jonathan is actually yours.
Ethan couldn't breathe.
Then he read the final line.
I didn't leave you because I stopped loving you.
I left because I discovered who Sophie really is.
Ethan looked up.
The mansion behind him collapsed completely.
A tower of sparks rose into the night.
Celeste stood silently.
Michael stared at the photograph.
And Ethan realized that the fire hadn't destroyed the past.
It had opened the final door.
Sophie was gone.
His mother was alive.
Jonathan had disappeared.
Celeste had sacrificed everything.
And Emily had left one final secret.
A secret involving the children.
A secret that could change the meaning of every lie Ethan had ever been told.
He looked toward the dark forest.
“Sophie.”
His voice broke.
“I'll find you.”
Then he looked at Emily's photograph.
“And this time…”
May you like
He clenched his fist.
“No one gets to decide my family's fate but me.”
