Chapter 8 — The Room Behind the Nursery

Chapter 8 — The Room Behind the Nursery

Ethan couldn't move.

Daniel stood across the room, holding the old photograph between two fingers.

“You were never the first son.”

The words echoed through the mansion.

“I was.”

Ethan stared at him.

“No.”

Daniel smiled bitterly.

“That is exactly what Father wanted you to believe.”

Behind Ethan, Margaret began trembling.

“Don't listen to him,” she whispered.

Daniel's eyes shifted toward her.

“You've already told him too much.”

Ethan stepped between them.

“Stay away from her.”

Daniel laughed.

“You still think you're protecting people.”

His gaze moved around the room.

“You've spent your entire life believing you were the center of this family.”

He raised the photograph.

“But you were only the replacement.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“Replacement for what?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he dropped the photograph onto the floor.

It landed face-up.

Two boys.

One older.

One younger.

Their father standing behind them.

Ethan recognized himself.

But the boy beside him—

was Daniel.

Written across the bottom was a date.

Three years before Ethan was born.

Ethan stared.

“That can't be real.”

“It is.”

“My mother told me you died.”

“Your mother was told that I died.”

“By Father?”

Daniel's smile vanished.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he needed an heir he could control.”

Ethan felt something cold settle inside his chest.

“So you disappeared.”

“I was taken.”

“By whom?”

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“Ask Emily.”

Ethan froze.

“You knew Emily?”

Daniel laughed.

“She knew me better than you ever did.”

A sudden sound came from upstairs.

A soft mechanical click.

Ethan turned.

Daniel's expression changed.

“What?”

Daniel looked toward the nursery.

“Someone opened the hidden door.”

Ethan immediately ran.

“Ethan!”

Daniel followed.

They reached the nursery.

The room was exactly as Ethan remembered.

Sophie's toys.

The crib.

The faded wallpaper.

The photograph of Emily beside the window.

Nothing appeared unusual.

But Sophie was standing in the middle of the room.

She was staring at the wall.

“Daddy.”

Ethan rushed to her.

“What happened?”

She pointed.

“Mommy used to tell me never to touch that.”

Ethan looked at the wall.

“What?”

“That picture.”

She pointed to an old framed photograph of Emily.

Ethan removed it.

Behind it was nothing.

Just plaster.

Daniel walked closer.

“Move.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because that's not the door.”

“What?”

Daniel pressed his palm against the wall.

Nothing happened.

Then he touched a tiny metal pin hidden beneath the frame.

A click sounded.

Part of the wall moved inward.

Ethan stared.

A narrow passage appeared.

Cold air flowed from inside.

Sophie immediately grabbed Ethan's hand.

“I told Mommy I wouldn't go in there.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“You knew about this.”

Daniel nodded.

“Emily showed me once.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because she asked me not to.”

Ethan stared into the darkness.

“What was she hiding?”

Daniel's answer was quiet.

“Your family.”

The passage led behind the nursery.

It descended several steps.

The walls were lined with old wooden panels.

At the bottom was a steel door.

No handle.

Only a keypad.

Daniel entered four numbers.

12-17-08.

The same date engraved inside Emily's wedding ring.

The lock opened.

Ethan stared at him.

“You knew the code.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Emily gave it to me.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Because she knew I would eventually have to bring you here.”

The door opened.

Inside was a room Ethan had never seen.

Shelves covered every wall.

Folders.

Boxes.

Photographs.

Birth certificates.

Medical records.

Passports.

Bank documents.

Everything was labeled.

Everything was organized.

Then Ethan saw one name.

SOPHIE BROOKS.

He stopped breathing.

He rushed toward the shelf.

There were dozens of files.

Sophie.

Every year of her life.

Every doctor's appointment.

Every school record.

Every photograph.

Every psychological evaluation.

Ethan opened one.

His hands began shaking.

At the top was a sentence:

SUBJECT: SOPHIE BROOKS

STATUS: PRIMARY HEIR

Below it:

MONITORING REQUIRED.

Ethan stared.

“Who monitored her?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Ethan opened another file.

Inside were photographs.

Sophie sleeping.

Sophie at school.

Sophie playing in the garden.

Sophie leaving the house with Ethan.

Someone had been watching her for years.

His daughter had been monitored from birth.

Ethan's voice cracked.

“How long?”

Daniel answered.

“Since the day she was born.”

“By whom?”

“Your father.”

Ethan slammed the folder shut.

“My father was dead.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You keep saying that.”

Ethan found another file.

This one was marked:

INHERITANCE EVENT — SOPHIE AGE 18

Inside was a legal document.

It stated that Sophie would receive control of the family trust when she turned eighteen.

But there was a condition.

If Sophie was declared medically or psychologically unfit, control would pass to the designated guardian.

Ethan looked at the name.

Celeste Brooks.

His stomach dropped.

“Again.”

Daniel nodded.

“Your father planned everything around Celeste.”

“But why?”

“Because Celeste wasn't chosen randomly.”

Ethan looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel pulled another folder from the shelf.

It contained Celeste's background.

Birth records.

Education.

Employment.

Medical history.

And one document that made Ethan's blood freeze.

A contract.

Signed by Ethan's father.

CONFIDENTIAL FAMILY GUARDIAN AGREEMENT.

Ethan read it twice.

Then a third time.

Celeste had been appointed guardian of Sophie before Sophie was even born.

Before Ethan had married Emily.

Before Ethan had met Celeste.

Ethan whispered:

“She was planted.”

Daniel nodded.

“She was placed near your family.”

“By Father.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To protect the inheritance.”

Ethan looked at the shelves.

“To protect Sophie?”

Daniel shook his head.

“To control her.”

A sound came from behind them.

Margaret gasped.

“Someone's coming.”

Ethan turned.

The secret door was closing.

He ran toward it.

“Wait!”

It slammed shut.

They were trapped.

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“No signal.”

Ethan tried the keypad.

Nothing.

Then the lights came on.

One by one.

A projector activated.

A video appeared on the wall.

Emily.

Ethan froze.

She was sitting in a chair.

Alive.

Older than he remembered.

Exhausted.

Her face was thinner.

But it was her.

“Ethan,” she said.

His eyes filled with tears.

“If you're watching this, you've found the room.”

He stepped closer.

“Emily…”

The recording continued.

“I know you have questions.”

“You deserve answers.”

“But before I tell you anything, you need to understand one thing.”

Emily looked directly into the camera.

“Sophie was never the target.”

Ethan's breathing stopped.

“She was the bait.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

Emily continued.

“The people who built this room weren't protecting the family.”

“They were documenting it.”

“Every secret.”

“Every child.”

“Every inheritance.”

“Every death.”

Ethan looked at the files.

Emily's voice became quieter.

“Your father believed blood was power.”

“He spent decades trying to create the perfect heir.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

Then at himself.

Emily continued:

“He had two sons.”

“One he could control.”

“One he could erase.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Ethan whispered:

“Daniel.”

Emily nodded in the recording.

“Daniel was the first.”

“He was born with the original inheritance rights.”

“Ethan was born later.”

“Your father changed everything.”

Ethan stared.

“Why?”

Emily's voice broke.

“Because Daniel refused to become him.”

The recording changed.

A new document appeared on screen.

The original family trust.

Ethan read the first paragraph.

Then his eyes widened.

Daniel was named the primary heir.

Not Ethan.

Not Sophie.

Daniel.

The trust had been altered after Daniel disappeared.

The amendment transferring everything to Ethan had been signed by one person.

Their father.

But there was a second signature.

A witness.

Emily.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you come back?”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Because Father threatened to kill you.”

Ethan stared.

“He told me that if I returned, you would die.”

Silence.

Daniel continued.

“So I stayed dead.”

Ethan looked toward the screen.

Emily's voice returned.

“I discovered the original trust after I married Ethan.”

She took a shaky breath.

“I wanted to tell him.”

“But by then, people were watching.”

“Your father.”

“Celeste.”

“And someone else.”

Ethan frowned.

“Who?”

Emily's eyes moved toward the camera.

“The man who inherited my father's organization.”

The screen went black.

A new name appeared.

JONATHAN VALE.

Ethan's heart stopped.

“The dead lawyer.”

Daniel nodded.

“He wasn't dead.”

A loud bang came from the door.

Someone was trying to enter.

Ethan stepped back.

Daniel grabbed a metal bar.

“Stay behind me.”

Another bang.

The steel door bent inward.

Then a voice came through.

“Ethan.”

He recognized it.

Celeste.

“Open the door.”

Ethan stared.

“What are you doing here?”

“Open it.”

“Why?”

“Because you don't understand what you're looking at.”

Daniel shouted:

“You never wanted him to find this room.”

Silence.

Then Celeste whispered:

“I wanted him to find it when he was ready.”

Ethan stared at the door.

“You knew it existed.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the files.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about my father's plan.”

“Yes.”

Ethan felt betrayed all over again.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Emily made me promise.”

“Stop using Emily's name!”

Celeste went silent.

Then she said:

“She made me promise because she knew what would happen if you found out too soon.”

“What?”

“They would kill Sophie.”

Ethan looked at his daughter.

“Where is Sophie?”

Silence.

His heart stopped.

He turned.

Sophie was gone.

“Daniel.”

Daniel looked around.

“She was just here.”

Ethan's blood ran cold.

The nursery upstairs was empty.

Sophie had vanished.

Then a speaker crackled.

A child's voice came through.

“Daddy?”

Ethan froze.

“Sophie!”

“Daddy, I'm okay.”

“Where are you?”

“I don't know.”

A man's voice interrupted.

“You shouldn't have opened the room.”

Ethan's face went white.

“Who are you?”

The man laughed.

“You already know.”

Jonathan Vale.

The dead lawyer.

The voice continued.

“Your father didn't build that room.”

Ethan stared.

“Then who did?”

A pause.

“Emily.”

Ethan's heart stopped.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she needed somewhere to keep the truth.”

“What truth?”

The voice became colder.

“The truth about Sophie.”

Ethan looked at the shelves.

Every file.

Every photograph.

Every secret.

Then he noticed one folder lying on the floor.

It hadn't been there before.

He picked it up.

The label read:

SOPHIE — BIOLOGICAL RECORDS

Ethan opened it.

Inside was a DNA report.

He read the first line.

Then the second.

His hands began shaking.

The report confirmed that Sophie was not biologically related to Ethan.

His world collapsed.

“No…”

Daniel stared over his shoulder.

“What does it say?”

Ethan couldn't speak.

The speaker crackled again.

Jonathan's voice returned.

“Now you understand.”

Ethan gripped the report.

“Where is Sophie?”

“Safe.”

“Give her back.”

“You want your daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Then bring me the original second will.”

Ethan clenched his jaw.

“And if I don't?”

A child's voice whispered through the speaker.

“Daddy…”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Jonathan spoke one final sentence.

“Then Sophie disappears the same way her mother did.”

The speaker went silent.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“What are you going to do?”

Ethan stared at the DNA report.

Then at the secret files.

Then at the locked door.

Finally, he whispered:

“I'm going to find my daughter.”

Daniel nodded.

“And Emily?”

Ethan looked toward the screen where his wife's frozen image remained.

“I've already lost her once.”

His voice hardened.

“I won't lose her again.”

Outside the secret room, footsteps slowly faded into the darkness.

And somewhere beneath the mansion—

a second door opened.

A door Ethan had never known existed.

May you like

Behind it waited the truth about Sophie.

And the identity of the man who had spent years controlling the Brooks family from the shadows.
