CHAPTER 12 â THE WOMAN WHO LOST EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 12 â THE WOMAN WHO LOST EVERYTHING
The first thing Leah Carter noticed when she woke up was the silence.
Not peaceful silence.
The kind of silence that comes after something has been destroyed.
She opened her eyes slowly.
For a few seconds, she forgot where she was.
Then reality returned.
The courtroom.
The custody battle.
Victoria.
Adrian.
The documents.
Ellie.
Her daughter.
Her entire life.
All of it was hanging by a thread.
"Evan?"
Her voice was weak.
No answer.
She sat up.
The room was unfamiliar.
A guest bedroom in Evan's house.
The place where she and Ellie were supposed to finally feel safe.
But something felt wrong.
Too quiet.
Then she saw the envelope.
Sitting on the table beside the bed.
Her name was written on it.
LEAH CARTER.
Her heart immediately tightened.
Because after everything she had learned...
she knew envelopes never brought good news.
Inside was a single document.
A legal notice.
Her hands began shaking.
No.
Not again.
She read the first line.
And felt the world disappear.
NOTICE OF ASSET TRANSFER AND CLAIM OF INHERITANCE RIGHTS.
Below it was a signature.
Adrian Vale.
Leah stood quickly.
"Evan!"
The door opened.
He entered immediately.
He had not slept.
She could see it.
The exhaustion in his face.
The anger.
The fear.
"What happened?"
Leah handed him the document.
Evan read it.
His expression changed.
"This can't be real."
"That's what everyone keeps saying."
Her voice cracked.
"Until it becomes real."
Evan looked at the pages again.
The document claimed Adrian had legal authority over the Carter-Mercer inheritance.
Not because of ownership.
Because of blood.
"He is claiming to be family."
Leah whispered.
Evan looked at her.
"Is he?"
The question hurt.
Because after everything...
nothing seemed impossible anymore.
Before Leah could answer, Christopher called.
His voice sounded different.
Serious.
"Mr. Mercer."
"What happened?"
A pause.
"The court documents have been compromised."
Evan froze.
"What?"
"The evidence we submitted yesterday."
"Yes?"
"They disappeared from the official record."
Silence.
"How?"
Christopher hesitated.
"Someone with internal access."
Evan looked at Leah.
And they both knew.
The enemy was not outside.
It was inside.
"Who?"
Christopher lowered his voice.
"We are investigating."
A pause.
"But I found something else."
"What?"
"The person who changed the files used a Mercer family authorization code."
Evan's face hardened.
Richard.
"No."
Leah whispered.
Not because she believed Richard was innocent.
But because she realized something worse.
"There is another person."
At the same time...
Across the city.
Richard Mercer sat alone inside his office.
For the first time in decades, the room felt too large.
Too empty.
His empire.
His achievements.
Everything he built.
And yet...
he had lost control.
The door opened.
A woman walked in.
Richard looked up.
And froze.
"Victoria."
She smiled.
"Hello, Richard."
Richard stood.
"You shouldn't be here."
Victoria looked around the office.
"Funny."
"I spent twenty years hearing that same sentence."
Richard's expression darkened.
"What do you want?"
Victoria laughed.
"The same thing you always wanted."
A pause.
"Control."
Richard stepped closer.
"You have no idea what you're dealing with."
Victoria smiled.
"Actually, I do."
She placed a folder on his desk.
A very old folder.
Richard recognized it immediately.
His face changed.
"Where did you get that?"
"From the place you thought you buried forever."
The folder contained evidence.
The original agreements.
The real history.
The truth about the Mercer and Carter families.
Victoria opened it.
"You destroyed my family."
Richard remained silent.
"You destroyed my daughter."
A pause.
"You destroyed Leah."
Richard looked at her.
"You are doing the same thing."
Victoria's smile disappeared.
"No."
"I am doing what I should have done years ago."
Richard laughed.
"You think taking Ellie will fix the past?"
Victoria looked at him.
"No."
Her voice became cold.
"It will make sure nobody else controls the future."
Back at Evan's house, Leah finally told him the secret she had kept hidden.
The secret she had carried since Ellie's birth.
"I knew someone was watching us."
Evan looked at her.
"What?"
"After Ellie was born."
She looked down.
"I received letters."
"What kind of letters?"
"Threats."
Evan felt anger rising.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I didn't know who to trust."
A pause.
"And because the last time I trusted someone..."
Her eyes filled.
"I lost everything."
Evan softened.
"Leah."
She shook her head.
"No."
"I need you to understand."
She looked directly at him.
"Four years ago, I didn't leave because I wanted to."
"I left because someone made me believe staying would kill my daughter."
Evan felt the weight of those words.
Not anger.
Not betrayal.
Pain.
"Who?"
Leah looked toward the window.
"Your father."
The accusation was heavy.
But before Evan could respond...
the alarm system activated.
Red lights flashed.
Someone had entered the house.
Evan immediately moved.
"Stay here."
"No."
Leah stood.
"I am done hiding."
They entered the hallway.
And stopped.
Because standing there was someone neither expected.
Sabrina.
But she was not alone.
She held a folder.
And her face was filled with panic.
"I know who has Ellie."
Evan stared.
"You already told us."
"No."
Sabrina shook her head.
"Not Victoria."
A pause.
"Not Adrian."
Everyone became still.
"Then who?"
Sabrina looked at Richard's old photograph on the wall.
Then whispered:
"The person who started all of this."
Evan's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Sabrina opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A woman.
Young.
Beautiful.
Familiar.
Leah stepped closer.
Her breathing stopped.
Because she recognized the face.
"My mother..."
But Sabrina shook her head.
"No."
She pointed to the woman beside Victoria.
"Your mother had a sister."
Leah froze.
"I don't have an aunt."
Sabrina looked at Evan.
"That's what they wanted everyone to believe."
The final page of the folder revealed the truth.
A birth record.
A hidden adoption.
A missing heir.
And one name.
Evelyn Carter.
The woman who disappeared twenty years ago.
The woman who had been erased from history.
The woman who now had Ellie.
Leah collapsed into the chair.
"No..."
Evan caught the document.
His hands trembled.
Because the enemy was no longer a stranger.
Not a businessman.
Not a rival.
Not even a former lover.
The person who took Ellie...
was family.
May you like
And somewhere in the city, a woman who had lost everything was holding a child who represented everything she had ever wanted back.
