CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN WHO BROKE EVERYONE

CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN WHO BROKE EVERYONE

The first thing Evan Mercer learned after becoming a father was that fear changed shape.

Before Ellie, he feared failure.

He feared losing his company.

He feared disappointing his family.

He feared becoming the kind of man his father was.

But after Ellie was born

he learned there was a different kind of fear.

The fear of not reaching your child in time.

The police station was louder than usual.

Phones ringing.

Officers moving quickly.

People speaking in low voices.

But Evan heard none of it.

All he could hear was Ellie's voice.

"Daddy, I want to go home."

Four words.

Four words that destroyed him.

Because she trusted him.

And he had failed her again.

"Mr. Mercer."

The detective approached.

"We located the apartment."

Evan immediately stood.

"Where is Ellie?"

The detective hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

"She is safe."

Evan released a breath.

"But?"

The detective looked serious.

"Ms. Cross wasn't acting alone."

Leah stepped closer.

"Who was with her?"

The detective looked at both of them.

"Your mother."

Evan had spent his entire life believing his mother abandoned him.

He remembered being ten years old.

Standing by the front window.

Waiting for her car to return.

Waiting for her voice.

Waiting for an explanation.

But she never came back.

Richard told him:

"Your mother chose to leave."

Evan believed him.

Because children believe the people who are supposed to protect them.

Now he discovered another truth.

His mother had not left.

She had been hidden.

The apartment was located on the east side of the city.

A place far away from the Mercer family.

When Evan entered, he saw Sabrina first.

She looked different.

No expensive confidence.

No perfect makeup.

No controlled smile.

Just a tired woman sitting on the floor.

And beside her

Ellie.

The moment Ellie saw Evan, she ran.

"Daddy!"

Evan dropped to his knees.

He held her so tightly he was afraid she would disappear.

"I'm sorry."

He repeated it.

"I'm sorry."

Ellie wrapped her arms around him.

"I knew you would come."

That sentence almost destroyed him.

Because she believed in him.

Even when he had not earned it.

Behind them, an older woman watched.

Evan turned.

His mother.

Margaret Mercer.

For a moment, neither moved.

Twenty years of questions stood between them.

"Mom?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"My son."

The words felt strange.

Almost foreign.

Then Evan saw something.

A bruise on her wrist.

Fear in her eyes.

And suddenly he understood.

His mother had not been gone.

She had been trapped.

"What happened?"

Margaret looked at Richard's name appearing on Evan's phone.

She immediately stepped back.

"Did he tell you I left?"

Evan said nothing.

Her expression answered for him.

A broken smile appeared.

"Of course he did."

Margaret explained everything.

Years ago, she discovered Richard was manipulating business records.

She wanted to expose him.

But Richard threatened her.

Not with violence.

With reputation.

With power.

With taking away everything she loved.

"He told me if I spoke, he would destroy you."

Evan looked down at Ellie.

"So you stayed silent?"

Margaret cried.

"Yes."

The answer hurt.

But Evan understood.

She was not protecting herself.

She was protecting him.

Then Sabrina spoke.

Everyone turned.

"I tried to warn you."

Evan looked at her coldly.

"You kidnapped my daughter."

"I know."

She lowered her eyes.

"And I deserve your anger."

For the first time, Sabrina sounded honest.

"I made terrible choices."

Leah stepped forward.

"Terrible choices?"

Her voice shook.

"You destroyed my life."

Sabrina looked at her.

"I know."

"Then why?"

A long silence.

Finally, Sabrina answered.

"Because I was raised to believe love was something you had to win."

Nobody spoke.

Sabrina explained.

Her father was the same kind of man as Richard.

A man who measured everything by power.

Success.

Control.

She grew up watching people leave.

Watching her mother replaced.

Watching affection become a transaction.

"When I met Evan, I thought I finally found something real."

Evan's expression hardened.

"You manipulated it."

"Yes."

She admitted it.

"I was afraid Leah would take it away."

Leah stared.

"I never wanted to take him."

Sabrina looked at her.

"But you had something I never had."

"What?"

"A love that existed before money."

For a moment, no one spoke.

Because the truth was painful.

Sabrina was not innocent.

But she was also not born a monster.

She became one.

One choice at a time.

Then Evan asked the question that mattered.

"Why did you take Ellie?"

Sabrina looked toward the child.

"Because I found out Richard had a plan."

Richard.

Always Richard.

"What plan?"

Sabrina pulled out a document.

She handed it to Evan.

It was a legal agreement.

A custody agreement.

Already prepared.

Before Ellie was even found.

Evan read it.

His face changed.

The document stated that Leah was unstable.

That Evan was unable to provide proper care.

That custody should be transferred to a Mercer family guardian.

The guardian name:

Richard Mercer.

"He was going to take her."

Leah whispered.

Sabrina nodded.

"I found the documents in his office."

Evan looked at her.

"Why didn't you show me?"

Her eyes filled with regret.

"Because I thought I could use it."

A pause.

"I thought if I became the person who saved Ellie, you would choose me."

The honesty was painful.

Because it was the first honest thing Sabrina had ever given him.

Then Richard appeared at the doorway.

Everyone turned.

His face was emotionless.

"You are all being dramatic."

Evan stared.

"You tried to take my daughter."

Richard shook his head.

"I tried to protect the family."

"No."

Evan stepped forward.

"You tried to own it."

Richard looked at Ellie.

And his expression softened.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"She is a Mercer."

Evan immediately understood.

Not a child.

Not a person.

An heir.

That was the moment Evan finally saw his father clearly.

Richard Mercer did not love people.

He collected them.

Then Richard said something that changed everything.

"You think this ends here?"

He smiled.

"You don't know what Leah's father did."

Leah froze.

"What?"

Richard looked at her.

"Your father didn't lose everything because of business."

A pause.

"He lost everything because he betrayed the wrong person."

Evan looked between them.

"Who?"

Richard smiled.

"The person who has been controlling this entire war."

Silence.

Then he said the name.

A name none of them expected.

"Leah's mother."

Leah went pale.

Because her mother had disappeared twenty years ago.

And everyone thought she was dead.

But Richard knew otherwise.

And suddenly the entire story changed.

Because the woman who broke everyone

was not Sabrina.

May you like

It was someone who had been waiting in the shadows for decades.
