CHAPTER 8 — THE CHILD THEY TOOK

CHAPTER 8 — THE CHILD THEY TOOK

For years, Evan Mercer believed the greatest betrayal of his life was losing Leah.

Then he believed it was losing four years with Ellie.

But standing in that apartment, holding his daughter in his arms while listening to his father reveal another hidden truth

he realized something terrifying.

The people around him had never been fighting for love.

They were fighting for control.

And Ellie was the prize.

The room remained silent after Richard spoke.

"Leah's mother."

Two words.

Two words that changed the entire story.

Leah stood completely still.

Her face had lost all color.

"My mother is dead."

Richard looked at her.

"That is what you were told."

Evan immediately stepped between them.

"Enough."

His voice was cold.

"You don't get to drop another secret and walk away."

Richard looked at his son.

"You think you understand everything now?"

"No."

Evan held Ellie closer.

"But I know one thing."

A pause.

"You are done making decisions for my family."

For the first time, Richard looked genuinely surprised.

Because Evan was no longer the obedient son who listened.

He was a father.

And fathers protected their children.

Later that night, Evan brought Ellie back to his house.

Not the Mercer mansion.

Not the place where Richard had controlled everything.

His own house.

A place that finally belonged to him.

Ellie fell asleep in his arms before he even reached her bedroom.

Evan stood there for several minutes.

Just watching.

Memorizing.

Every breath.

Every movement.

Because he knew now how quickly someone could take away a moment.

Leah stood behind him.

"She trusts you."

Evan didn't turn.

"I don't understand why."

"Why?"

"Because I wasn't there."

Leah looked at him.

"You are here now."

He finally looked at her.

"Is that enough?"

Leah was quiet.

Because neither of them knew the answer.

The next morning, Evan received a call from his lawyer.

The news was not good.

"Mr. Mercer, we have a problem."

"What kind?"

"Richard has filed emergency custody papers."

Evan's expression hardened.

"Already?"

"He claims you are emotionally unstable after discovering Ellie."

A bitter smile appeared.

"Of course he does."

"And he is using Leah's history against her."

Evan looked toward the kitchen.

Leah was making breakfast for Ellie.

A normal scene.

A scene Richard wanted to destroy.

"What evidence?"

The lawyer hesitated.

"Records showing Leah hid the child."

Evan closed his eyes.

"Anything else?"

A pause.

"Photos."

"What photos?"

"Photos of Leah meeting with unknown people after Ellie was born."

Evan felt uneasy.

"Who?"

"We don't know yet."

When he ended the call, Leah immediately noticed his expression.

"What happened?"

Evan didn't answer immediately.

Because he knew the truth would hurt her.

"Richard filed for custody."

Leah went silent.

Then she smiled sadly.

"Of course he did."

Evan frowned.

"You expected this?"

"I expected something like this."

"Why?"

Leah looked down.

"Because that's what powerful people do when they can't control you."

That afternoon, they met with Evan's lawyer.

Christopher Hayes.

A man who had worked with the Mercer family for years.

But unlike Richard's employees...

he still had a conscience.

Christopher reviewed the documents.

Then looked up.

"This is worse than I thought."

Evan's expression tightened.

"Explain."

"Richard isn't just asking for custody."

"What then?"

"He is trying to prove that neither of you are suitable parents."

Leah looked confused.

"Why?"

Christopher hesitated.

Then answered:

"Because if he wins, he becomes Ellie’s legal guardian."

Silence.

Evan felt something inside him turn cold.

Richard didn't want Ellie because he loved her.

He wanted Ellie because she represented power.

That night, someone broke into Leah's apartment.

Not to steal money.

Not to destroy things.

Only one thing was taken.

The old box.

The box containing every piece of evidence from four years ago.

The messages.

The recordings.

The proof.

When Leah saw the empty drawer, she immediately knew.

"No."

Evan rushed over.

"What happened?"

She pointed.

"The box."

"What was inside?"

Her face changed.

"Everything."

At that exact moment, Evan's phone received a message.

Unknown number.

One picture.

Ellie sleeping.

His heart stopped.

Below it was a sentence.

Stop searching, or you lose her again.

Evan's blood ran cold.

"Who sent that?"

Leah looked at the phone.

Then whispered:

"Her."

"Who?"

"My mother."

Evan stared.

"Your mother has Ellie?"

Leah nodded slowly.

"I think so."

Another message arrived.

This time, a voice recording.

A woman's voice.

Older.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

"Evan Mercer."

He froze.

"You have something that belongs to me."

A pause.

"And I have something that belongs to you."

The recording continued.

"Your daughter is safe."

"But she will stay with me until this family learns a lesson."

Leah grabbed the phone.

"Mom!"

The recording continued.

"Leah, you always believed love would save you."

A cold silence.

"But love is what made you weak."

The message ended.

Evan looked at Leah.

Her face was broken.

Not because Ellie was gone.

Because the woman who took her was her own mother.

"Who is she?"

Evan asked.

Leah whispered:

"Her name is Victoria Carter."

The name meant nothing to Evan.

But Richard's reaction did.

Because when Evan called his father and said the name

Richard went completely silent.

"Father."

No answer.

"Who is Victoria Carter?"

Finally, Richard spoke.

And for the first time...

he sounded afraid.

"She was the only person I ever lost against."

Evan's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

Richard whispered:

"It means Sabrina was never the biggest threat."

A pause.

"Neither was I."

The call ended.

Evan looked at Leah.

Then at the picture of Ellie.

His daughter was somewhere with a woman who believed taking children was a way to fix the world.

And Evan made a promise.

Not to Richard.

Not to Sabrina.

Not to Victoria.

To Ellie.

"I am coming for you."

Because four years had already been stolen from him.

May you like

He would not allow another day.
