CHAPTER 10 — THE MISTRESS WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

CHAPTER 10 — THE MISTRESS WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
The woman standing outside the Geneva Meridian Bank looked exactly like Elena.
Same dark eyes.
Same delicate jaw.
Same small birthmark beneath her left ear.
Even the way she tilted her head when she was thinking was identical.
But there was one difference.
Elena had spent nine years believing Julian's betrayal was the worst thing that had ever happened to her.
This woman had spent twenty-five years knowing exactly what the Laurent family was capable of.
Her name was Emma.
And she had never forgotten the night she was taken.
"Why did you bring me here?"
Emma stood beside the black car, staring at the bank.
Marcus Vale closed the door behind him.
"Because it's time."
"Time for what?"
"To meet your sister."
Emma's expression hardened.
"I've waited twenty-five years."
"I know."
"Don't tell me you know."
Marcus looked at her.
"You don't understand what I've done to keep you alive."
Emma laughed bitterly.
"You didn't keep me alive."
She stepped closer.
"You kept me hidden."
Marcus said nothing.
"You told me my family abandoned me."
"I told you what I needed you to believe."
"You told me Elena was dangerous."
"She was."
"You told me your family was protecting me."
"They were."
Emma's eyes narrowed.
"Then why does every document I've ever seen say my sister owns everything?"
Marcus smiled faintly.
"Because documents can be changed."
"Not all of them."
"No."
He looked toward the bank.
"That's why we're here."
Emma crossed her arms.
"What do you want from me?"
Marcus's voice became quiet.
"The same thing your mother wanted."
Emma froze.
"My mother?"
"Isabella Laurent."
The name still hurt.
Emma had heard it thousands of times.
But never from Marcus.
"What do you know about her?"
"Everything."
"Then tell me."
"Not yet."
Emma shook her head.
"You always do this."
"What?"
"Give me half the truth and expect me to obey."
Marcus smiled.
"You're more like your mother than you realize."
"Don't compare me to her."
"Why?"
"Because you never knew her."
Marcus's expression changed.
"I knew her better than anyone."
Emma stared at him.
"Did you love her?"
He didn't answer.
That silence told her enough.
Inside the vault, Elena was still holding her mother's letter.
Her fingers trembled.
When you find her, don't ask why she was hidden. Ask why she was hidden from you.
The words wouldn't leave her mind.
Why had Emma been hidden?
And from whom?
Her father had protected her.
Her grandmother had protected her.
Her mother had protected her.
But somehow, all that protection had required Elena to remain ignorant.
She hated that.
She hated every secret.
Every locked door.
Every carefully chosen lie.
She turned to Victor.
"Who was protecting Emma?"
Victor hesitated.
"Your father."
"I know."
"No."
He shook his head.
"Not only your father."
"Who else?"
"Your mother."
"She's dead."
"Yes."
"Then how?"
Victor looked at the letter.
"She arranged the protection before she died."
Elena frowned.
"How?"
"Through someone she trusted."
"Who?"
Victor didn't answer.
Elena's eyes narrowed.
"Victor."
He finally said:
"Julian."
Elena froze.
"What?"
"Your mother knew Julian before you met him."
The room seemed to tilt.
"That's impossible."
"It isn't."
"How?"
"His father introduced him to your family years ago."
Elena shook her head.
"No."
"He was already connected to the Laurent trust."
"No."
"He didn't meet you by accident."
Elena's hands went cold.
"Then the entire marriage..."
"Was planned."
She looked down at the letter.
Her mother's words suddenly carried a different meaning.
Ask why she was hidden from you.
Elena whispered:
"Julian knew about Emma."
Victor nodded.
"Yes."
Julian sat alone in his apartment.
He had stopped sleeping.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Elena's face.
Not the woman he had manipulated.
Not the wife whose trust he had exploited.
The woman who had finally looked at him without fear.
The woman who had walked away.
His phone buzzed.
A message.
Come to the old hotel.
No name.
Julian almost ignored it.
Then another message arrived.
Bring nothing. Come alone.
He went.
The old Laurent hotel was dark.
Julian entered through the side door.
A woman stood at the end of the corridor.
He stopped.
His face went pale.
For a moment, he thought he was looking at Elena.
Then the woman turned.
He knew immediately.
Not Elena.
Someone else.
Someone with the same face.
Emma.
"You."
Emma stared at him.
"You know me?"
Julian couldn't answer.
"You've seen my photograph."
"Where?"
"Your father's files."
Julian swallowed.
"You know who I am."
"I know exactly who you are."
He took a step backward.
"Where is Marcus?"
"He's coming."
"Why am I here?"
Emma walked closer.
"Because I want answers."
"About what?"
"About my sister."
Julian's expression changed.
"Elena?"
"Yes."
"What do you want to know?"
Emma looked directly into his eyes.
"Did you marry her for money?"
Julian looked away.
"Yes."
"Did you know she had a twin?"
He remained silent.
Emma stepped closer.
"Did you know?"
"Yes."
Her eyes hardened.
"How long?"
"Before the wedding."
Emma's jaw tightened.
"Who told you?"
"Marcus."
"And what did he tell you?"
Julian hesitated.
"That you were dangerous."
Emma laughed.
"Of course."
"He said you wanted the inheritance."
"He lied."
"I know."
"You know now?"
Julian looked at her.
"I know everything now."
Emma studied him.
"Then tell me the truth."
Julian took a breath.
"Your mother didn't die because of the trust."
Emma froze.
"What?"
"She died because she tried to expose Marcus."
Emma's face went blank.
"Marcus killed her?"
"I don't know."
"But you suspect him."
"Yes."
"Then why are you still alive?"
Julian smiled bitterly.
"I'm not sure I am."
Marcus entered the room.
He saw Julian.
Then Emma.
His expression remained calm.
"Good."
Emma turned.
"You lied to me."
Marcus stopped.
"About what?"
"Everything."
"That's a broad accusation."
"You told me Elena wanted to destroy me."
"She does."
"No."
Emma stepped forward.
"She doesn't even know I exist."
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"She knows now."
"Because of you."
"Because the truth is unavoidable."
Emma looked at Julian.
"He told me something."
Marcus glanced at him.
"What?"
"That my mother died because she tried to expose you."
Marcus smiled.
"Julian has become imaginative."
Julian stepped forward.
"Tell her."
Marcus ignored him.
"Emma, you need to understand something."
"What?"
"You were never hidden because you were unwanted."
"Then why?"
"Because you were valuable."
Emma's expression hardened.
"I'm a person."
"Of course."
"No."
She shook her head.
"To you, I'm an asset."
Marcus smiled.
"You've always been more than that."
"Then prove it."
Marcus said nothing.
Emma stepped closer.
"Tell me why my mother's name appears on the original bank documents."
Silence.
"Tell me why Elena inherited the trust."
Silence.
"Tell me why my birth certificate was altered."
Marcus's face finally changed.
"You found it."
Emma smiled.
"Yes."
She pulled a document from her coat.
Marcus stared.
"Where did you get that?"
"From your private archive."
Julian looked at the document.
His eyes widened.
"What is it?"
Emma handed it to him.
Julian read it.
Then looked up.
"She's the primary heir."
Marcus's expression became cold.
"No."
Julian turned.
"What?"
Marcus took the document.
His eyes scanned it.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Emma smiled.
"You didn't know."
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"What did you do?"
"Nothing."
She leaned closer.
"I simply found what you failed to destroy."
At the Geneva Meridian, Elena was still searching the vault.
She opened another box.
Inside were photographs.
Her mother.
Her grandmother.
Her father.
And a younger Marcus Vale.
Then she found one photograph that made her blood freeze.
Julian.
Twenty years old.
Standing beside Isabella Laurent.
Her mother.
Elena stared.
"No."
Victor looked over her shoulder.
He went silent.
"When was this taken?"
Victor checked the date.
"Twenty-three years ago."
Elena looked at him.
"Julian was a child."
"Yes."
"How did he know my mother?"
Victor didn't answer.
She turned the photograph over.
A message was written on the back.
HE WAS SENT TO US BY HIS FATHER.
Elena's stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
Victor looked at her.
"It means Julian didn't enter your life nine years ago."
"What?"
"He entered your family's life when he was six."
Elena stared at the photograph.
Six years old.
Julian.
Her mother.
Her father.
Her grandmother.
All standing together.
A family photograph.
Except Julian wasn't family.
She looked closer.
There was another child in the picture.
A little girl.
About the same age as Julian.
Elena leaned forward.
"Who's that?"
Victor's face changed.
"I don't know."
Elena pointed.
"Look at her."
Victor stared.
The little girl had the same eyes as Emma.
Elena's heart began pounding.
"That's impossible."
Victor whispered:
"No."
Elena turned.
"What?"
He looked terrified.
"That's Emma."
In the old hotel, Marcus slammed the document onto the table.
"You don't understand what you've found."
Emma smiled.
"Then explain it."
"That document was never supposed to exist."
"But it does."
"It changes nothing."
"Everything."
Marcus stepped toward her.
"Elena is the legal successor."
Emma shook her head.
"Only under the amended trust."
Marcus froze.
Emma continued.
"The original trust has never been amended."
Julian looked between them.
"What does that mean?"
Emma answered:
"It means the person who inherited the empire wasn't Elena."
Marcus's eyes darkened.
"It means the trust was never transferred."
Julian's voice dropped.
"Then who owns it?"
Emma looked at Marcus.
"Me."
Silence.
Marcus smiled.
"You don't know what you're saying."
"I do."
"The trust requires the original bloodline."
"I have it."
"The legal identity was changed."
"I restored it."
"How?"
Emma pulled out another document.
"My mother prepared it."
Marcus's face went white.
"Impossible."
"She knew you'd come after me."
Marcus stared at the document.
Emma's voice became cold.
"And she left instructions."
"What instructions?"
Emma smiled.
"Never trust Marcus Vale."
Julian stepped backward.
Marcus looked at him.
"You."
Julian shook his head.
"What?"
"You brought her here."
"I didn't."
"You did."
Emma interrupted.
"No."
She looked at Marcus.
"She did."
Marcus frowned.
"Who?"
The lights suddenly went out.
A woman's voice came from the darkness.
"Me."
Marcus froze.
Elena stepped into the room.
Her father behind her.
Julian stared.
"Elena."
She ignored him.
Her eyes were fixed on Marcus.
"You're finished."
Marcus laughed.
"You think you can threaten me?"
"No."
Elena held up her phone.
"I don't need to."
She pressed the screen.
Every light in the room turned on.
Security officers entered.
Lawyers followed.
Then Victor appeared.
And behind him—
a woman in a wheelchair.
Silver hair.
Pale face.
But unmistakable eyes.
Elena's breath caught.
Her father whispered:
"Isabella."
Elena stared.
Her mother.
Alive.
The woman looked at Elena.
Tears filled her eyes.
"My daughter."
Elena couldn't move.
Julian looked horrified.
Marcus stepped backward.
"No."
Isabella looked directly at him.
"You've spent twenty-five years pretending I was dead."
She smiled faintly.
"But you forgot one thing."
Marcus said nothing.
"I kept copies."
She raised one hand.
Victor opened a briefcase.
Inside were dozens of original documents.
Trust agreements.
Bank certificates.
Ownership records.
And one final document.
Isabella looked at Emma.
Then Elena.
"The Laurent empire was never meant to belong to one daughter."
She paused.
"It was meant to belong to both."
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
Emma stepped forward.
For the first time in twenty-five years, the sisters stood face to face.
They looked at each other.
Neither spoke.
Then Emma whispered:
"You're my sister."
Elena nodded.
"Yes."
Emma smiled through tears.
"You're not what they told me."
"Neither are you."
They embraced.
Across the room, Julian watched them.
His face was empty.
Because he finally understood the cruelest part of his betrayal.
He had spent nine years trying to control one heiress.
Only to discover there had always been two.
And neither one needed him.
Marcus suddenly turned toward the exit.
Security blocked his path.
He stopped.
Isabella looked at him.
"Where do you think you're going?"
Marcus smiled.
"You've won tonight."
"No."
Isabella's eyes hardened.
"You've misunderstood."
She pointed toward Julian.
"He's only the beginning."
Julian's face went pale.
"What?"
Isabella looked at Elena.
"Ask your husband who financed the first acquisition."
Elena frowned.
"Why?"
"Because the money didn't come from Marcus."
Julian froze.
Isabella continued.
"It came from someone inside your family."
Elena looked at her father.
He went pale.
"Dad?"
He didn't answer.
Emma turned toward him.
"You knew?"
Elena's father closed his eyes.
Isabella whispered:
"Your father wasn't the only Laurent who betrayed us."
Elena stared.
"Who else?"
Isabella looked toward the door.
Then said one name.
"Robert."
Elena's blood ran cold.
Her uncle.
The man who had supposedly disappeared twenty-five years ago.
The man whose name appeared in the financial records.
The man everyone believed had betrayed the family and fled.
But Isabella's expression told her something was wrong.
Robert hadn't disappeared.
He had been waiting.
And somewhere outside the bank, a phone rang.
A man answered.
"Yes?"
A voice whispered:
"She knows."
He looked through the window toward the Laurent building.
"Then it's time."
He smiled.
"Bring me my daughters."
And the man on the other end of the call replied:
"Which one?"
May you like
The answer came without hesitation.
"Both."
