CHAPTER 11 — THE MAN BEHIND JULIAN

CHAPTER 11 — THE MAN BEHIND JULIAN

The words hung in the air.

Bring me my daughters.

Elena had heard them.

So had Emma.

So had Isabella.

But only one person in the room seemed to understand exactly what they meant.

Her father.

He looked at Isabella.

"He's back."

Isabella nodded.

Elena's stomach tightened.

"Who?"

Neither answered.

"Dad."

He finally looked at her.

"Robert."

The name seemed to change the temperature in the room.

Elena remembered the documents.

The hidden transfers.

The altered trust.

The old photograph.

The mysterious man who had supposedly disappeared decades ago.

"Robert is alive?"

Her father nodded.

"Yes."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

Emma stepped closer.

"You do."

He looked at her.

"No."

"You've known for years."

"I knew he was alive."

"That's not the same thing."

"It is when someone is trying to kill you."

Elena looked between them.

"Someone explain."

Isabella slowly pushed herself forward in the wheelchair.

"Robert Laurent was my brother."

Elena stared.

"I thought he was your brother."

"He was."

"Then why did he betray us?"

Isabella's eyes darkened.

"Because he believed the empire should have belonged to him."

Elena frowned.

"Why?"

"Because he believed being born a man made him more entitled than his sisters."

Emma laughed bitterly.

"So this entire nightmare started because of inheritance?"

"No."

Isabella shook her head.

"It started because Robert discovered something."

"What?"

"The Laurent fortune wasn't created by our grandfather."

Elena frowned.

"Then who created it?"

Isabella looked toward the vault.

"The first Laurent."

"1897."

Isabella nodded.

"He didn't build a resort empire."

She paused.

"He built a financial network."

Elena slowly understood.

"And Robert wanted control."

"Yes."

"How did he plan to get it?"

Isabella's eyes moved toward Julian.

"Through him."

Julian looked away.

Elena stared at her husband.

"You knew Robert."

Julian didn't answer.

"Julian."

He finally whispered:

"Yes."

The truth came out slowly.

Like poison.

Piece by piece.

Julian had not met Marcus first.

He had met Robert.

Twenty years ago.

Julian's father, Thomas Vale, had been one of Robert's closest associates.

Robert had discovered that Thomas's son was intelligent, ambitious, and desperate to escape his father's shadow.

So he recruited him.

Not to marry Elena.

Not yet.

First, Julian was taught the Laurent system.

The trusts.

The bank.

The succession clauses.

The hidden companies.

The family weaknesses.

Then came Elena.

"How old were you?" Elena asked.

Julian looked at the floor.

"Twenty."

"And you already knew who I was."

"Yes."

"You knew my family."

"Yes."

"You knew about the fortune."

"Yes."

"And you deliberately pursued me."

"Yes."

Elena's voice became quiet.

"Did you ever love me?"

Julian closed his eyes.

"I wanted to."

"That's not an answer."

"I tried."

"Still not an answer."

He looked at her.

"No."

Elena nodded.

It hurt.

But strangely, not as much as it once would have.

She had already mourned the man she thought Julian was.

This was only the confirmation.

She turned away.

"Who was behind you?"

Julian hesitated.

"Robert."

"Not Marcus?"

"Marcus was the middleman."

Elena frowned.

"Explain."

"Robert couldn't approach you directly."

"Why?"

"Because your father knew him."

Her father nodded.

"Robert had been watching the family for years."

Julian continued.

"Marcus recruited my father."

"To do what?"

"Destroy the Laurent succession."

Emma stepped forward.

"And me?"

Julian looked at her.

"Robert knew about you."

Emma's face hardened.

"When?"

"Before you were born."

Her eyes widened.

"How?"

"Your mother told him."

Emma stared.

"Why would she?"

"Because Robert was her brother."

Silence.

"He promised to protect her."

"He didn't."

"No."

Julian looked down.

"He used her."

Emma's voice trembled.

"How?"

"Your mother was investigating the trust. Robert convinced her that the only way to keep Elena safe was to hide you."

Emma froze.

"So he separated us."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because he needed two separate heirs."

Elena frowned.

"Why would he need us separated?"

Julian looked at her.

"Because together, you were impossible to control."

Elena felt a chill.

"Together?"

"Your mother created a joint succession clause."

Victor stepped forward.

"That's correct."

He opened the original trust.

"Your mother amended the succession agreement before you were born."

He pointed to a paragraph.

NO SINGLE HEIR SHALL CONTROL THE LAURENT MASTER HOLDING WITHOUT THE CONSENT OF THE SECOND SURVIVING DIRECT DESCENDANT.

Elena read it twice.

Then looked at Emma.

"So neither of us could control everything alone."

"Exactly," Victor said.

Emma stared at the document.

"Then Robert separated us because..."

"He needed one of you to disappear."

Elena's expression hardened.

"And he chose Emma."

Julian shook his head.

"Robert didn't choose Emma."

"Then who did?"

"Your grandmother."

Elena stopped.

"What?"

"Your grandmother discovered Robert's plan."

"Then why did she hide Emma?"

"Because she believed Robert would kill her."

Emma looked at Isabella.

"Mom?"

Isabella nodded.

"Your grandmother saved both of you."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

"Because she thought the truth would get you killed."

Emma whispered:

"I spent twenty-five years believing I wasn't wanted."

Isabella closed her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Suddenly, the vault lights flickered.

Everyone looked up.

Victor checked his phone.

"The bank network is going down."

Elena's father stood.

"What?"

"Someone is accessing the master system."

"Who?"

Victor looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

"Robert."

Elena's stomach dropped.

"Can he access the bank?"

"Not directly."

"Then how?"

Victor typed rapidly.

"He has an internal authorization."

"Whose?"

Victor looked at Julian.

Julian froze.

"Mine."

Elena turned.

"What?"

Julian shook his head.

"I never gave him access."

"You didn't need to."

Her father stepped toward him.

"Your biometric credentials."

Julian stared.

"What?"

"Robert has your biometric profile."

Julian's face went white.

"How?"

"From the original enrollment."

Elena looked at him.

"When?"

Julian swallowed.

"Before I married you."

Her father cursed under his breath.

"The entire marriage was a security breach."

Across the city, inside a private control room, a man watched the bank systems unlock.

He was older.

Silver-haired.

Impeccably dressed.

He looked nothing like the monster Elena had imagined.

He looked like a grandfather.

Kind.

Elegant.

Almost harmless.

Robert Laurent.

He smiled as the system displayed:

AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED.

A younger man stood behind him.

"Sir."

Robert didn't look away.

"Yes?"

"The bank is open."

"And the trust?"

"Almost."

Robert smiled.

"Then call my daughters."

The younger man hesitated.

"Both?"

Robert nodded.

"Both."

Elena's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

"Hello?"

A man's voice.

Warm.

Calm.

Almost affectionate.

"Elena."

She froze.

"Who is this?"

"You've grown into your mother's eyes."

Her heart stopped.

"Robert."

He laughed softly.

"Your father finally told you."

"Where are you?"

"Closer than you think."

"What do you want?"

"My daughters."

Elena's blood ran cold.

"I'm not your daughter."

"No."

His voice remained calm.

"You're my niece."

"Where is Emma?"

"With you."

Elena looked at her sister.

"Why?"

"Because I want both of you."

"You can't have us."

"I already did."

The line went dead.

Emma looked at Elena.

"What did he say?"

Elena swallowed.

"He wants us."

Isabella suddenly gasped.

"Don't let him take you."

Everyone turned.

She was gripping the arms of her wheelchair.

"Your mother?"

Elena rushed toward her.

"What?"

Isabella looked terrified.

"Robert doesn't want the money."

"Then what?"

"He wants the bloodline."

Julian stepped forward.

"Why?"

Isabella looked at him.

"Because Robert believes the Laurent bloodline gives him access to something."

"What?"

"The original account."

Elena frowned.

"The account we found?"

"No."

Isabella shook her head.

"The account beneath it."

Victor's face changed.

"You never told me."

"I couldn't."

"Why?"

"Because Robert was listening."

Elena's heart raced.

"What is underneath the master account?"

Isabella looked at her daughters.

"An inheritance no bank can calculate."

Emma whispered:

"What kind of inheritance?"

Isabella answered:

"Control."

Elena frowned.

"Control of what?"

"Not money."

"Then what?"

Isabella's voice became barely audible.

"Institutions."

Silence.

"The Laurent family doesn't merely own assets."

She looked at Victor.

"We own voting rights."

Victor nodded.

"Across multiple financial networks."

"How many?"

"Dozens."

Elena's eyes widened.

"And Robert wants them."

"Yes."

"But why?"

Isabella looked toward the darkened ceiling.

"Because with enough voting power..."

She paused.

"One man can influence the people who control governments, banks, corporations, and entire markets."

Elena stared.

"So this isn't about billions."

"No."

"It's about power."

"Exactly."

A loud alarm suddenly sounded.

The vault doors began closing.

Victor shouted:

"Everyone out!"

Elena grabbed Emma.

"Move!"

Security officers rushed toward them.

The lights flickered again.

Then every screen in the vault turned on.

Robert appeared.

His face calm.

His smile gentle.

"Good evening."

Elena stared at the screen.

"Robert."

"Hello, Elena."

"Let them go."

Robert laughed.

"You're already protecting your sister."

Emma stepped forward.

"What do you want from me?"

Robert smiled.

"Your signature."

Emma frowned.

"For what?"

"The original succession agreement."

"No."

Robert's smile disappeared.

"Then Elena signs."

Elena stepped forward.

"Neither of us will."

"I expected that."

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

Elena's father.

Bound to a chair.

Her blood froze.

"Dad!"

Her father stared at the screen.

He was alive.

Robert's voice returned.

"Your father has been very difficult."

Elena looked at Robert.

"If you hurt him..."

"You'll what?"

Robert smiled.

"You'll finally understand what your grandmother understood twenty-five years ago."

Elena's fists clenched.

"What?"

"Family is leverage."

The screen went black.

Elena turned to Julian.

"You know where he is."

Julian looked at her.

"Yes."

"Take me."

He hesitated.

"Elena..."

"Now."

Emma stepped beside her.

"I'm coming."

"No."

"I'm your sister."

"Exactly."

Emma looked at her.

"We do this together."

Elena nodded.

"Together."

Julian stared at them.

For the first time, he understood what Robert had feared.

The sisters were together.

The original succession clause was active.

And no amount of money could separate them now.

They left the bank through a private tunnel.

Julian led them beneath the city.

"Where are we going?"

"An old Laurent property."

"Which one?"

"The house where Robert lived."

Elena looked at him.

"You know the address?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"Because I spent three years there."

Emma stared at him.

"Three years?"

"Robert trained me there."

Elena's face hardened.

"What did he teach you?"

Julian looked ashamed.

"How to manipulate you."

Silence.

Then Elena asked:

"Everything?"

"Everything."

"Even the proposal?"

"Yes."

"The wedding?"

"Yes."

"The children?"

Julian hesitated.

"Yes."

Emma looked away.

Elena closed her eyes.

Then opened them.

"Keep driving."

The house stood on a hill overlooking the lake.

No lights.

No guards.

Too quiet.

Julian stopped.

"He's here."

Elena stepped out.

Emma followed.

The front door opened before they reached it.

A man stood inside.

Robert.

He smiled.

"Welcome home."

Elena froze.

"You took my father."

"Yes."

"Let him go."

"Eventually."

Emma stepped forward.

"You wanted us."

Robert looked at her.

Then at Elena.

"Twenty-five years."

His voice softened.

"Twenty-five years, and here you are."

Elena's eyes narrowed.

"You separated us."

"I saved you."

"You stole my sister."

"I protected her."

Emma shook her head.

"You lied to me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Robert looked at her.

"Because I needed you to survive."

"Survive for what?"

He smiled.

"For tonight."

A door opened behind him.

Elena's father was brought into the room.

He was bruised but conscious.

Elena took a step forward.

Robert raised a hand.

"One more step and he dies."

Elena stopped.

Robert looked at the sisters.

"Now."

He held out two documents.

"Sign."

Elena stared.

"What are they?"

"The transfer of the Laurent master holding."

Emma looked at the papers.

"Both signatures?"

"Yes."

Elena laughed.

"You think we'll do that?"

Robert smiled.

"No."

He looked toward Julian.

"That's why I brought him."

Julian froze.

Robert continued:

"Your husband has already signed."

Elena turned.

"What?"

Julian looked horrified.

"I didn't."

Robert smiled.

"You did."

He held up a document.

Julian's signature.

His biometric authorization.

His legal consent.

Everything.

Elena stared at the page.

Then Robert said the words that shattered the room:

"Julian didn't marry you to steal your money."

He looked at Elena.

"He married you because I needed your signature."

Silence.

"And once he had it..."

Robert smiled.

"I would have killed you."

Elena's face went cold.

Julian closed his eyes.

"I didn't know."

Robert laughed.

"That is the problem with useful men."

He looked at Elena.

"They never know when they're disposable."

Then the lights went out.

A gunshot echoed through the house.

Someone screamed.

And when the emergency lights came on—

Robert was gone.

Elena's father was gone.

And on the floor lay Julian.

Blood spreading across his shirt.

Emma dropped to her knees.

"Julian!"

Elena stared at the darkness.

Then she saw something on the floor beside him.

A small envelope.

Her name was written on it.

ELENA.

She opened it.

Inside was one sentence.

THE MAN YOU THOUGHT WAS BEHIND JULIAN ISN'T THE MAN WHO STARTED THIS.

Elena's blood ran cold.

Below it was another name.

A name she had never expected to see.

YOUR FATHER.

She looked up.

And for the first time that night—

she wondered if Robert had been telling the truth about one thing.

May you like

Maybe the greatest betrayal had never come from outside the family.

Maybe it had been sitting beside her all along.
