CHAPTER 14 — BEFORE SUNRISE

CHAPTER 14 — BEFORE SUNRISE

The room went silent.

Not the comfortable silence that came after an argument.

This was the silence of people realizing that everything they believed about themselves might have been a lie.

Elena stared at the two birth certificates.

One belonged to her.

One belonged to Emma.

Both had the same mother.

Both had the father's name left blank.

And Robert had just told them that only one of them carried his blood.

The other belonged to someone else.

Someone who had been standing in the house all night.

Thomas Vale.

Julian's father.

Elena slowly turned toward him.

"Dad?"

Thomas didn't answer.

Her voice shook.

"Are you my father?"

Thomas looked at Isabella.

She was crying.

That was enough.

Elena stepped backward.

"No."

Emma moved beside her.

"Mom."

Isabella covered her face.

"I didn't know."

Emma's voice broke.

"You didn't know who our fathers were?"

Isabella shook her head.

"I knew you were mine."

She looked at both daughters.

"That was the only thing I knew."

Elena stared at her.

"Then why did you let everyone believe Robert was our father?"

"Because I thought he was."

Robert looked away.

For the first time since Elena had met him, he seemed genuinely uncertain.

Thomas stood motionless.

Julian looked at him.

"Tell me."

Thomas closed his eyes.

"I don't know."

Julian laughed bitterly.

"That's impossible."

"No."

Thomas shook his head.

"It's the truth."

Twenty-five years earlier, Isabella had been trapped between two men.

Robert Laurent.

Thomas Vale.

They had been business partners.

Then enemies.

Then something more complicated.

Robert had loved Isabella.

Thomas had loved her too.

But Isabella had chosen neither.

She had chosen her daughters.

And when she discovered she was pregnant with twins, she had kept the truth secret.

The pregnancy had been dangerous.

The trust was being attacked.

Robert wanted control.

Thomas wanted revenge.

And Isabella knew that if either man discovered the children were heirs to the Laurent fortune, they would become targets.

So she created the only protection she could.

Two identities.

Two birth records.

Two families.

Two futures.

But there had been one problem.

The DNA results had never been completed.

The laboratory had been destroyed before the final report was issued.

Isabella had never known which twin belonged to which man.

Then the attack came.

The girls were separated.

Isabella was declared dead.

And the family buried the truth.

For twenty-five years.

Elena looked at her mother.

"You let us grow up without knowing each other."

"I had no choice."

"You always had a choice."

Isabella cried.

"I was trying to save you."

Emma stepped forward.

"And what did you save us from?"

Isabella looked at her.

"From becoming weapons."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"But we became weapons anyway."

Silence.

Robert finally spoke.

"I never wanted this."

Elena turned.

"You manipulated Julian."

"Yes."

"You controlled my father."

"Yes."

"You separated us."

"Yes."

"You destroyed my marriage."

"No."

Robert's voice hardened.

"That was Julian."

Elena stared at him.

He continued.

"I gave him the opportunity."

"That's enough."

Robert nodded.

"Perhaps."

Elena looked at the documents.

"What happens now?"

Robert's expression changed.

"Now you find out who your father is."

At 4:38 a.m., Victor arrived.

He was carrying a sealed case.

He looked at everyone in the room.

Then at Elena.

"Did they tell you?"

"Yes."

Victor sighed.

"Then we're out of time."

Emma frowned.

"Out of time for what?"

"The trust."

He opened the case.

Inside were three envelopes.

All sealed.

All marked with the Laurent family crest.

Elena recognized the handwriting.

Her grandmother's.

"What are those?"

"The original succession tests."

Elena's heart raced.

"You said the DNA records were destroyed."

"The public records were."

Victor placed the envelopes on the table.

"These weren't."

Emma stared.

"Then you knew."

"I knew there were sealed samples."

"Where?"

"In the original vault."

Elena looked at the envelopes.

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because your grandmother ordered me never to open them."

"Why?"

"Because once the results were known, the entire succession would change."

Emma whispered:

"How?"

Victor looked at both sisters.

"The Laurent trust doesn't recognize birth order."

"What does it recognize?"

"Blood."

Elena reached for the first envelope.

Her hand stopped.

"What if I don't want to know?"

Emma looked at her.

"You do."

Elena swallowed.

"Yes."

Victor shook his head.

"Once opened, the result becomes legally binding under the original trust."

Elena looked at him.

"Meaning?"

"If one sister is the primary blood heir and the other isn't..."

He hesitated.

"The trust will recognize the biological line."

Emma nodded slowly.

"And if we're both related to different men?"

Victor answered:

"Then the trust splits."

Elena frowned.

"Between us?"

"Not equally."

Silence.

"How much?"

"The daughter carrying Laurent blood receives the controlling interest."

"And the other?"

"Receives the secondary estate."

Emma looked at Elena.

"So everything could come down to one envelope."

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

Elena looked at her sister.

"If one of us wins..."

"The other loses."

Emma shook her head.

"No."

She took Elena's hand.

"We don't let them make us enemies again."

Elena smiled through tears.

"Together."

At 4:51 a.m., the estate's security system activated.

Clara rushed into the room.

"Someone breached the north gate."

Robert turned.

"Who?"

"We don't know."

"How many?"

"Twenty."

Elena's father stood.

"Robert."

Robert looked at him.

"Yes?"

"They're here for the girls."

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward Elena and Emma.

"They're here for the envelopes."

The first explosion shook the house.

Glass shattered.

The lights went out.

Emma grabbed Elena.

"Stay behind me."

Elena laughed.

"You're six minutes older."

Emma stared.

"What?"

"You were born first."

Emma blinked.

"How do you know?"

Elena pointed toward the birth records.

Emma looked down.

Her expression softened.

"You knew?"

"No."

They smiled at each other.

Then the second explosion hit.

The floor shook.

Clara shouted:

"Move!"

Security officers rushed into the room.

Robert grabbed the envelopes.

Elena stopped him.

"Give them to me."

Robert looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because they're ours."

Robert handed them over.

For once—

he didn't argue.

They ran through the underground passage.

The estate shook above them.

Bullets struck the walls.

Emma held the sealed envelopes against her chest.

Elena ran beside her.

Thomas followed.

Julian was at the back.

He stopped.

"Go!"

Elena turned.

"What?"

Julian pointed toward the tunnel.

"Keep moving."

A gunman appeared.

Julian tackled him.

The two crashed into the wall.

Elena shouted:

"Julian!"

He looked at her.

"Go!"

She hesitated.

Then ran.

The tunnel ended beneath the original Laurent bank.

Victor was waiting.

"You're safe."

Elena looked back.

"Julian isn't here."

"He'll find another exit."

Emma stared at the envelopes.

"We need to open them."

Victor shook his head.

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because Robert's enemies aren't the only ones coming."

A sound echoed through the tunnel.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Everyone turned.

A man stepped out of the darkness.

Marcus Vale.

Elena's eyes widened.

"You."

Marcus smiled.

"You really thought prison could hold me?"

Clara raised her weapon.

Marcus raised his hands.

"I'm not here to fight."

"Then why are you here?"

"To tell you the truth."

Elena laughed bitterly.

"Everyone suddenly has a truth."

Marcus looked at her.

"Because sunrise is coming."

Emma frowned.

"What happens at sunrise?"

Marcus looked at the envelopes.

"The Laurent succession becomes permanent."

Victor's face went pale.

"What?"

Marcus nodded.

"The emergency trust expires at sunrise."

Elena stared.

"How long?"

Victor checked his watch.

"Forty-three minutes."

Emma looked at the envelopes.

"Then we open them."

The room was silent.

Victor placed the three envelopes on the table.

The first contained a DNA sample.

The second contained a legal statement.

The third contained instructions.

Elena opened the instructions.

Her grandmother's handwriting.

To my granddaughters.

If you are reading this before sunrise, then the family has failed to protect you.

Do not let them divide you.

The blood test will identify your fathers.

But blood alone does not determine who deserves the empire.

Character does.

Therefore, the controlling inheritance shall belong not to the daughter with Laurent blood...

but to the daughter who refuses to use it against her sister.

Elena looked up.

Emma's eyes were wet.

Victor continued reading.

"The test determines biological lineage."

He opened the second document.

"But the final succession depends on both sisters."

Elena frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Victor turned the page.

"If both daughters remain united, the empire remains divided equally."

Emma smiled.

"If one turns against the other..."

"The betrayer loses everything."

Silence.

Robert stared at the document.

"My mother."

Elena looked at him.

"She knew."

"She always knew."

The first DNA envelope was opened.

Elena's hands shook.

Inside was a report.

She read the first line.

PATERNITY: ROBERT LAURENT — 99.9998% PROBABILITY.

The room went silent.

Robert closed his eyes.

Elena stared at him.

"You are my father."

Robert nodded.

"I always knew."

"No."

His voice broke.

"I suspected."

Elena looked at the second report.

Emma opened it.

She read.

Her face went completely white.

"Thomas Vale."

Thomas stepped forward.

Emma looked at him.

"You're my father."

Thomas nodded.

Tears filled his eyes.

"Yes."

Julian stared at his father.

"You knew?"

Thomas looked at him.

"I suspected."

"You let me believe Robert was my father."

"I was trying to protect you."

Julian laughed bitterly.

"Everyone was trying to protect everyone."

He shook his head.

"And nobody protected me."

Thomas looked devastated.

"I'm sorry."

Julian turned away.

Elena looked at Emma.

"So you're a Vale."

Emma smiled through tears.

"And you're a Laurent."

They stared at each other.

Then Emma laughed.

"That's almost funny."

Elena smiled.

"Almost."

Robert watched them.

"You don't understand."

Elena turned.

"What?"

"You are my daughter."

"Yes."

"That means the empire belongs to you."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

Robert frowned.

"My grandmother's will says otherwise."

She held up the document.

"Both of us."

Robert stepped forward.

"But you're Laurent."

"And she's Vale."

Emma nodded.

"But we're sisters."

Elena smiled.

"And that's what matters."

At 5:42 a.m., the final emergency order was filed.

The Laurent trust recognized both sisters.

The controlling authority split.

Robert lost his claim.

Thomas lost his.

Marcus lost everything.

Julian's debts were converted into personal liability.

The resorts remained under the Laurent family trust.

But Elena and Emma refused to take control alone.

They created a joint board.

Equal votes.

Equal authority.

No spouse.

No parent.

No outside trustee.

No secret beneficiary.

For the first time in generations—

the empire belonged to the people it was supposed to protect.

At 5:58 a.m., the sun began rising.

Elena stood on the balcony.

Emma joined her.

Below them, the city slowly woke.

"Do you regret it?"

Emma asked.

"What?"

"Everything."

Elena thought for a moment.

"Yes."

Emma nodded.

"So do I."

They stood quietly.

Then Emma said:

"But I don't regret finding you."

Elena smiled.

"Neither do I."

Behind them, Robert approached.

Elena turned.

"What do you want?"

He looked tired.

Not powerful.

Not dangerous.

Just old.

"I wanted to say goodbye."

Emma frowned.

"Where are you going?"

"To prison."

Elena stared.

"You could run."

Robert shook his head.

"No."

"Why?"

He looked at his daughters.

"Because your grandmother was right."

"About what?"

"Power means nothing if you lose yourself."

He looked at Elena.

"I'm sorry."

Then Emma.

"I'm sorry."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

She didn't forgive him.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

But she nodded.

Robert walked away.

Thomas remained behind.

He looked at Emma.

"I don't expect you to call me Dad."

Emma looked at him.

"Good."

He nodded.

"I understand."

She hesitated.

Then said:

"But you can stay."

Thomas looked up.

"Really?"

"Yes."

She smiled faintly.

"We have twenty-five years to catch up."

He began to cry.

Julian stood outside the estate.

Elena found him there.

He was alone.

No car.

No security.

No wealth.

No title.

Just Julian.

She stopped beside him.

"How's your shoulder?"

"Alive."

She smiled faintly.

"Good."

He looked at her.

"I heard about the trust."

"Yes."

"You're safe."

"We are."

He nodded.

"I won't bother you again."

Elena studied him.

"Don't disappear."

He looked surprised.

"Why?"

"Because running away is what you always did."

Julian looked down.

"And what should I do?"

"Live with what you did."

He nodded.

"I will."

She turned to leave.

"Elena."

She stopped.

"I'm sorry."

She looked back.

"I know."

Then she walked away.

Not because she had forgiven him.

But because she no longer needed his apology to move forward.

At exactly 6:00 a.m., every Laurent account reopened.

The empire survived.

The trust survived.

The bank survived.

The resorts survived.

But the old Laurent family did not.

The secrets had destroyed it.

The lies had exposed it.

And the two daughters who had been separated for twenty-five years had finally rewritten its future.

Elena stood beside Emma in the headquarters boardroom.

The first decision was already waiting.

A list of companies.

A list of debts.

A list of employees who had been loyal while everyone else betrayed them.

Emma looked at her.

"Ready?"

Elena smiled.

"No."

Emma laughed.

"Good."

"Why good?"

"Because if we're ever completely ready..."

She looked around the room.

"We'll probably make the same mistakes they did."

Elena nodded.

"Then let's make different ones."

They signed the first document together.

LAURENT FAMILY HOLDING — JOINT SUCCESSION AUTHORITY

Two signatures.

One future.

No secrets.

No hidden heirs.

No secret husbands.

No stolen identities.

No one pulling strings from the shadows.

Or at least—

that's what they believed.

Because as the sun rose over the city, an encrypted message arrived on Elena's private phone.

One sentence.

YOU FOUND YOUR FATHERS.

She froze.

Another message appeared.

BUT YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHO YOUR MOTHER WAS.

Elena stared at the screen.

Emma saw her face.

"What happened?"

Elena slowly turned the phone toward her.

Emma read the message.

Then looked at Elena.

"Who sent it?"

A third message appeared.

No number.

No name.

Only a photograph.

Isabella.

Young.

Standing beside a man neither sister recognized.

And in her arms—

a third baby.

Elena's blood ran cold.

There had been twins.

That was what they had always believed.

But the photograph showed three newborns.

Three Laurent bracelets.

Three children.

And written across the bottom in her grandmother's handwriting were six words:

THE THIRD CHILD NEVER CAME HOME.

Elena looked at Emma.

Emma whispered:

"How many children were there?"

Neither knew.

And somewhere far away, a woman opened an old wooden box.

Inside was a Laurent birth bracelet.

She smiled.

"The sisters finally know."

Then she looked down at the photograph of the three babies.

"And now..."

May you like

She whispered:

"it's time for the third one to come home."
