CHAPTER 10 — THE BOARDROOM TRIAL

CHAPTER 10 — THE BOARDROOM TRIAL
By eight o'clock that morning, the Monarch Grand no longer felt like a hotel.
It felt like a fortress.
Every entrance had been secured.
Every elevator required biometric authorization.
Every board member had been summoned.
Every corporate account connected to Bennett Global was under forensic review.
And on the forty-second floor, behind two steel doors and a wall of soundproof glass, Charlotte Bennett sat at the head of the longest table in the building.
The boardroom had been designed by her father.
She had never understood why he had insisted on a table that could seat thirty people.
Now she did.
It wasn't a boardroom.
It was a courtroom without a judge.
And today, everyone was going to testify.
Charlotte looked down the table.
Twenty-five directors.
Three corporate attorneys.
Two forensic accountants.
Arthur Vale.
Ethan.
And at the far end—
Ryan.
His hands were cuffed to the table.
Not by police.
By corporate security.
He had asked to speak.
Charlotte had allowed it.
Not because she trusted him.
Because she wanted everyone to hear him.
The doors opened.
Sabrina walked in.
She was no longer wearing the crimson gown.
She wore a simple black suit.
No diamonds.
No designer handbag.
No carefully constructed image.
For the first time since Charlotte had met her, Sabrina looked young.
Terrified.
She stopped when she saw the board.
Then her eyes found Charlotte.
"I didn't know."
Charlotte's expression didn't move.
"You didn't know what?"
Sabrina swallowed.
"That you were my sister."
The room went silent.
A director whispered something.
Another made the sign of the cross.
Charlotte leaned back.
"Sit down."
Sabrina did.
Then the doors opened again.
Every person in the room turned.
Charles Bennett entered.
Charlotte's father.
Alive.
Older.
Thin.
His silver hair was neatly combed.
He wore a black suit.
He walked with a cane.
But there was nothing fragile about his eyes.
They were exactly as Charlotte remembered.
Cold.
Intelligent.
Always three moves ahead.
He looked at his daughter.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Charles smiled.
"Hello, Charlotte."
She stared at him.
Seven years of grief collapsed into one second.
She had buried him.
She had cried beside his coffin.
She had stood beside her mother’s grave.
She had spent years believing the two people who created her were gone.
Now one stood in front of her.
And somehow that hurt more than death.
"You let me mourn you."
Charles nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I needed you to become strong."
Charlotte laughed.
It was a terrible sound.
"You faked your death to make me strong?"
"I had no choice."
"You always had a choice."
Charles glanced at the board.
"Not in this family."
Charlotte stood.
"Then let's begin."
The screen behind her illuminated.
BENNETT GLOBAL — EMERGENCY GOVERNANCE HEARING
Charlotte addressed the room.
"This meeting will determine three things."
She raised one finger.
"Who attempted to steal Bennett Global."
A second.
"Who manipulated its financial structure."
A third.
"And who knowingly participated in the operation."
She looked at Ryan.
"Nobody leaves until those questions are answered."
Gregory Price shifted in his seat.
Charlotte noticed.
"Mr. Price."
He looked up.
"Yes?"
"You requested my removal yesterday."
"I did."
"You claimed I was emotionally compromised."
"I still believe that."
Charlotte smiled.
"Good."
She clicked the remote.
A bank statement appeared.
"Then let's see how emotionally compromised you were when you accepted $680,000 from Monroe Strategic Holdings."
Gregory's face tightened.
"I explained that."
"No."
Charlotte clicked again.
"You denied it."
Another click.
A transfer.
Another.
A private email.
Another.
A recording.
Gregory's own voice filled the room.
"Charlotte won't survive the vote."
The room erupted.
Gregory slammed his hand against the table.
"That recording is taken out of context."
Charlotte turned.
"Then provide context."
Gregory said nothing.
"That's what I thought."
The forensic accountant stood.
"Madam Chair."
Charlotte nodded.
"Three years ago, Mr. Price began routing corporate expenses through twelve shell entities."
A chart appeared.
The lines spread across the screen like a spiderweb.
"Those entities eventually transferred money to accounts controlled by Samuel Monroe."
Another chart.
"And from those accounts, funds were used to finance..."
The screen changed.
Photographs appeared.
Sabrina.
Luxury apartments.
Jewelry.
Cars.
Travel.
Then Ryan.
Private flights.
Hotel suites.
Corporate cards.
Charlotte's jaw tightened.
The accountant continued.
"Total identified diversion."
A number appeared.
$31,842,900.
The room fell silent.
One director whispered:
"Thirty-one million?"
The accountant nodded.
"And that's only what we've traced so far."
Charlotte looked at Ryan.
He didn't defend himself.
She asked:
"How much did you personally receive?"
Ryan answered quietly.
"Approximately four million."
Sabrina looked at him.
"You told me you had nothing."
Ryan closed his eyes.
"I lied."
Charlotte looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because by then, I was already trapped."
"Trapped?"
Ryan looked up.
"My first payment wasn't for the affair."
Charlotte's expression hardened.
"What was it for?"
"To monitor you."
The room went silent.
Ryan continued.
"I was supposed to report your movements."
"To Samuel?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because they believed you were hiding access to the Bennett reserve."
Charlotte stared.
"I didn't even know the reserve existed."
"I know."
"Then why monitor me?"
"Because your father believed you would eventually discover it."
Charlotte turned toward Charles.
"Is that true?"
Charles said nothing.
"Father."
He finally spoke.
"Yes."
Charlotte's voice shook.
"You used my husband to spy on me."
Charles answered calmly.
"I used the resources available to me."
"He's my husband."
"That was his assignment."
Charlotte stared at him.
"You destroyed my marriage."
Charles's expression barely changed.
"Your marriage was already weak."
Ryan flinched.
Charlotte looked at him.
"And you cheated anyway."
Ryan nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
His voice became quiet.
"Because I wanted something real."
Charlotte stared.
"With Sabrina?"
Ryan shook his head.
"No."
He looked directly at Charlotte.
"I wanted to feel like I belonged somewhere."
Charlotte's expression hardened.
"You should have told me."
"I was afraid."
"You should have left."
"I couldn't."
"You should have trusted me."
Ryan looked down.
"I know."
Charlotte turned away.
"That was your choice."
The doors suddenly opened.
Federal agents entered.
Everyone turned.
A woman in a dark suit walked directly toward Charlotte.
"Ms. Bennett."
"Who are you?"
"Agent Elena Torres."
She showed her badge.
"Federal Financial Crimes."
Charlotte nodded.
"What happened?"
"We have warrants."
"For?"
"Monroe Strategic Holdings."
Charlotte looked at Charles.
His expression changed for the first time.
Agent Torres continued.
"We also have a warrant for the arrest of Samuel Monroe."
Sabrina stood.
"My father?"
"Yes."
She looked terrified.
"Why?"
"Conspiracy, financial fraud, wire fraud, and attempted corporate takeover."
Sabrina slowly sat.
Then she looked at Charlotte.
"Are they going to arrest me too?"
Charlotte didn't answer.
Agent Torres did.
"That depends on what you tell us."
Sabrina stared at the table.
Then whispered:
"I'll tell you everything."
The boardroom became silent.
Sabrina took a deep breath.
"Samuel told me Charlotte stole my life."
Charlotte stared.
"He said my mother was supposed to inherit the Bennett fortune."
"He told you that?"
"Yes."
"He said Charles abandoned us."
Sabrina nodded.
"He told me Charlotte's existence destroyed my family."
Charlotte felt something twist inside her.
"He told you I was responsible?"
"Yes."
"And you believed him."
Sabrina looked at her.
"I hated you before I ever met you."
Charlotte didn't respond.
Sabrina continued.
"He told me Ryan was going to marry me."
Charlotte's eyebrows lifted.
"What?"
"Not legally."
Sabrina swallowed.
"He said once Ryan divorced you, he would become CEO. Then I would become the public face of the Bennett family."
Ryan stared at her.
"You knew?"
Sabrina looked at him.
"I knew what I was told."
"You never loved me."
"No."
Ryan looked devastated.
Charlotte felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Sabrina continued.
"But then something changed."
"What?"
"Ryan started protecting you."
Charlotte looked at Ryan.
Sabrina's eyes filled with tears.
"He stopped reporting everything."
"When?"
"About three months ago."
Charlotte remembered.
That was when Ryan had started becoming distant.
When she thought he was falling deeper into the affair.
Sabrina whispered:
"He told me he couldn't do it anymore."
Ryan looked down.
Sabrina continued.
"That's when Samuel threatened him."
"With what?"
"His family."
Charlotte's eyes narrowed.
"What family?"
Ryan answered.
"My younger sister."
He looked at Charlotte.
"She's seventeen."
Charlotte's expression softened for half a second.
"Samuel had people watching her."
Sabrina nodded.
"He said if Ryan went to the police, she would disappear."
The room went silent.
Charlotte looked at Ryan.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Ryan laughed bitterly.
"Would you have believed me?"
Charlotte didn't answer.
He nodded.
"Exactly."
Agent Torres stepped forward.
"There's one more problem."
Charlotte looked at her.
"What?"
"The four hundred million dollars."
Charlotte's expression tightened.
"We know it was transferred."
"Yes."
"We know it went through Northstar."
"Yes."
"We know Northstar was registered through Arthur's firm."
Agent Torres nodded.
"But the final recipient isn't Charles Bennett."
Charlotte froze.
"What?"
Agent Torres placed a document on the table.
"The money was moved again."
"Where?"
"An account in Luxembourg."
"Owner?"
Agent Torres looked toward Charles.
Then at Charlotte.
"The beneficiary is listed as..."
She paused.
"...Charlotte Bennett."
The room erupted.
Charlotte stared at the document.
"No."
Agent Torres nodded.
"Yes."
"That's impossible."
"We verified the identification."
"I never opened an account in Luxembourg."
"Apparently someone did."
Charlotte turned toward Arthur.
He looked horrified.
"Arthur?"
"I didn't authorize it."
"Then who did?"
Nobody answered.
Agent Torres placed another document on the table.
"This account was created seven years ago."
Charlotte stared.
Seven years.
The year her father supposedly died.
The year Charles disappeared.
The year her life had changed.
"What was the account for?"
Agent Torres looked at her.
"To receive the Bennett family reserve."
Charlotte's face went pale.
"Why would my father create an account in my name?"
Charles finally spoke.
"Because I knew one day you would need it."
Charlotte turned.
"You knew?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because if you knew, they would have killed you."
"Who?"
Charles looked toward the windows.
"The people who killed Andrew."
Charlotte's blood froze.
"Andrew isn't dead."
Charles didn't answer.
"Father."
His eyes lowered.
"Not the way you think."
Charlotte stepped toward him.
"What does that mean?"
Charles whispered:
"Andrew is the reason this all began."
The lights suddenly went out.
The room went black.
Someone screamed.
Security moved instantly.
A gunshot echoed from somewhere outside the boardroom.
Then another.
Glass shattered.
Charlotte dropped behind the table.
Arthur grabbed her arm.
"Stay down!"
Another shot.
Ryan shouted:
"Charlotte!"
She looked across the room.
Ryan was standing.
"Get down!"
He ran toward her.
A third shot.
Ryan stumbled.
Charlotte screamed.
"RYAN!"
He fell against the table.
Security rushed forward.
Agent Torres drew her weapon.
"Everyone stay down!"
Emergency lights came on.
Ryan was on the floor.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Charlotte crawled toward him.
"Ryan."
He opened his eyes.
"Are you okay?"
She stared at him.
"I'm fine."
He tried to smile.
"Good."
"You idiot."
He laughed weakly.
"I know."
Charlotte pressed her hand against the wound.
"Stay with me."
Ryan looked at her.
"I need to tell you something."
"Not now."
"It's about Andrew."
Charlotte froze.
"What?"
Ryan struggled to breathe.
"He wasn't killed."
Charlotte stared.
"Then where is he?"
Ryan's eyes moved toward Charles.
Charles looked terrified.
For the first time, Charlotte saw genuine fear on her father's face.
Ryan whispered:
"He's in this building."
Charlotte looked around the boardroom.
"What?"
Ryan grabbed her wrist.
"He's been here the entire time."
Then his eyes closed.
Charlotte screamed for medical help.
But before anyone could answer, the boardroom doors slammed shut.
The security system activated.
LOCKDOWN INITIATED.
And from the speakers came a voice.
A voice Charlotte had never heard before.
Calm.
Male.
Almost amused.
"Good morning, Charlotte."
She froze.
The voice continued.
"You've spent the last two days exposing everyone else's secrets."
A pause.
"Now..."
The lights flickered.
"...let's discuss yours."
Charlotte looked toward the ceiling.
"Who are you?"
A quiet laugh answered her.
Then:
"Ask your father what happened the night Andrew disappeared."
Charles lowered his head.
Charlotte turned toward him.
"Father?"
He didn't answer.
The voice returned.
"Because your father isn't the only Bennett who survived that night."
The room fell silent.
Charlotte looked at the blood on her hands.
Then at Charles.
Then at the sealed doors.
And finally at the security monitors.
One camera showed a man walking through the hotel's underground corridor.
Tall.
Dark-haired.
His face hidden in shadow.
But Charlotte knew that silhouette.
She had seen it before.
In the photograph.
In her father's files.
In the old family records.
Andrew.
Her brother.
Alive.
And walking directly toward the boardroom.
The screen went black.
Charlotte whispered:
"Open the doors."
Security shook his head.
"Ma'am, the system won't respond."
Charlotte stood.
"Then override it."
"We can't."
She looked at Charles.
"Can you?"
Her father slowly lifted his head.
"No."
"Why?"
His face had gone pale.
"Because I didn't build this system."
Charlotte stared.
"Who did?"
Charles looked toward the locked doors.
Then whispered:
"Andrew."
The entire room went silent.
And for the first time, Charlotte understood the terrifying possibility:
Perhaps the hostile takeover had never been led by Samuel Monroe.
Perhaps Samuel had only been a distraction.
Perhaps Ryan had only been a pawn.
Perhaps Sabrina had only been another piece.
May you like
Because the person sitting at the center of the entire conspiracy...
might have been the brother Charlotte had spent her entire life believing was dead.
