CHAPTER 9 — THE SECOND WOMAN

CHAPTER 9 — THE SECOND WOMAN

The first thing Charlotte noticed when she entered the private conference room was that Ryan was no longer afraid.

He looked exhausted.

His suit was wrinkled.

There was dried blood near his collar.

One sleeve was torn.

But his eyes were clear.

Too clear.

He stood when Charlotte entered.

She didn't sit.

Neither did he.

For several seconds, they simply stared at each other.

Ten years of marriage stood between them.

Ten years of birthdays.

Anniversaries.

Arguments.

Promises.

A house they had built together.

A life she had believed was real.

Then Charlotte said the only thing that mattered.

"Where is Sabrina?"

Ryan's expression tightened.

"I don't know."

"That's not good enough."

"I haven't seen her since last night."

Charlotte studied him.

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"She was seen entering the Monarch's private elevator with your father-in-law's associate."

Ryan's face changed.

"Sabrina?"

"Yes."

He looked genuinely surprised.

Then something like fear crossed his face.

"Charlotte..."

"Don't."

She raised one hand.

"You don't get to use my name like we're still married."

Ryan swallowed.

"I'm trying to protect you."

"You've been protecting yourself."

"I know."

"Then start telling the truth."

Ryan looked toward the window.

"I will."

Charlotte pulled out a chair and sat.

"Start with Sabrina."

Ryan sat across from her.

"The woman you think you know isn't the woman she is."

Charlotte gave a humorless smile.

"That's convenient."

"Listen to me."

"I'm listening."

Ryan leaned forward.

"Sabrina Monroe isn't just Samuel Monroe's daughter."

Charlotte frowned.

"She's his only daughter."

Ryan shook his head.

"No."

Charlotte's expression changed.

"What?"

"Sabrina has a sister."

"Who?"

Ryan stared at her.

"Mara."

Charlotte went still.

"My mother?"

"No."

Ryan lowered his voice.

"Your mother had another daughter."

Charlotte felt the room contract around her.

"What are you saying?"

"Sabrina's mother was your father's first wife."

Charlotte stared.

Ryan continued.

"Before your mother."

"That makes Sabrina..."

"Your half-sister."

Charlotte laughed.

One sharp, disbelieving sound.

"No."

Ryan said nothing.

"You're telling me the woman who humiliated me in that lobby is my sister?"

"Half-sister."

"You're insane."

"I wish I were."

Charlotte stood.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Ryan reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a folded document.

"I don't expect you to believe me."

He placed it on the table.

"I expect you to read this."

Charlotte stared at the document.

Then opened it.

A birth certificate.

Sabrina Elizabeth Monroe.

Father:

Samuel Monroe.

Mother:

Mara Bennett.

Charlotte's hands went numb.

She read the name again.

Mara.

Her mother.

The woman who had supposedly died twelve years ago.

The woman whose voice had called her the night before.

The woman who had told her that Charles Bennett was alive.

Charlotte slowly looked up.

"Where did you get this?"

"From Samuel's private files."

"Why would Samuel have this?"

"Because he has been using Sabrina for years."

Charlotte closed the document.

"Using her for what?"

Ryan looked at her.

"You."

Charlotte stood motionless.

"Why me?"

"Because your father left you control of the family trust."

"I already knew that."

"No."

Ryan shook his head.

"You don't understand."

He pulled another document from his pocket.

"This is the original succession agreement."

Charlotte read it.

Then stopped.

There was a clause she hadn't seen before.

In the event of Charles Bennett's death, control shall remain divided between his surviving children until a lawful successor is established.

She looked at Ryan.

"Andrew."

"Yes."

"And me."

"Yes."

Charlotte turned the page.

A handwritten amendment appeared.

Should either heir produce an undisclosed sibling with legitimate Bennett blood, that sibling shall be entitled to challenge the succession.

Charlotte's stomach dropped.

"Sabrina."

Ryan nodded.

"Exactly."

Charlotte stared at the document.

"So this is why Samuel wanted her close to me."

"Yes."

"To establish her as an heir."

"Or destroy your claim before you discovered hers."

Charlotte sat back down.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The arrogance.

The confidence.

The way Sabrina had entered the Monarch like she belonged there.

The way she had treated Charlotte as though Charlotte were beneath her.

It hadn't been random.

Sabrina believed she had a claim.

And someone had convinced her that Charlotte was standing between her and billions of dollars.

Charlotte whispered:

"Does Sabrina know?"

Ryan looked at her.

"She knows some of it."

"How much?"

"Enough to hate you."

Across Manhattan, Sabrina Monroe stood inside a penthouse overlooking Central Park.

She was no longer smiling.

Her diamond earrings sat on the counter.

Her red dress lay across a chair.

She had changed into a black silk robe.

In front of her stood a man she had known since childhood.

Samuel Monroe.

Her father.

"You said she wouldn't find out."

Samuel poured himself a drink.

"She wasn't supposed to."

Sabrina's voice trembled.

"She knows about the account."

"That isn't the real problem."

"Then what is?"

"Charlotte has found Andrew."

Sabrina froze.

"What?"

"He's alive."

Her face drained.

"That's impossible."

Samuel turned toward her.

"You've been lied to."

"By whom?"

"Everyone."

Sabrina stepped backward.

"Where is he?"

Samuel didn't answer.

"Where is he?"

"Not your concern."

"It is my concern if he can challenge my inheritance."

Samuel's expression hardened.

"Your inheritance?"

He laughed.

"You still think this is about money."

Sabrina looked confused.

"What else could it be?"

Samuel stepped closer.

"Your father never wanted you to inherit Bennett Global."

"My father is Charles Bennett."

"No."

Sabrina stared.

"Your father is me."

Silence.

"Charles was never your father."

Sabrina's face went white.

"What?"

Samuel smiled.

"I've spent twenty years making you believe otherwise."

She shook her head.

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"You showed me the birth certificate."

"I forged it."

Her breathing became rapid.

"You told me my mother was Mara Bennett."

"She wasn't."

"Then who was she?"

Samuel looked away.

"Someone who died before you were old enough to remember."

Sabrina's eyes filled with tears.

"Why?"

"Because you were useful."

She stared.

"Useful?"

"You were the perfect weapon."

At the Monarch, Charlotte's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

"Charlotte."

Her mother's voice.

Again.

"Mom?"

"Don't trust Ryan."

Charlotte looked across the table.

Ryan watched her.

"Why?"

"Because he knows where Charles is."

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

"You said Dad was alive."

"He is."

"Where?"

"Ryan knows."

Charlotte looked directly at him.

"Do you?"

Ryan's face went pale.

"Yes."

Charlotte stood.

"Where?"

Ryan didn't answer.

Charlotte's voice hardened.

"Where is my father?"

Ryan closed his eyes.

"Under the Monarch."

Charlotte froze.

"What?"

"There's a private tunnel beneath the hotel."

"To where?"

"An old service bunker."

"Who uses it?"

Ryan looked at her.

"Your father."

Charlotte and Ryan entered the underground tunnel at 4:18 a.m.

Arthur followed.

So did Ethan.

The corridor was ancient.

Brick walls.

Rusting pipes.

Old electrical cables.

The Monarch had been built over an older structure.

A structure that predated the hotel by decades.

Charlotte walked quickly.

"How do you know this exists?"

Ryan answered:

"Your father showed me."

"When?"

"Six years ago."

"Why?"

"Because he wanted me to understand what would happen if I betrayed him."

Charlotte looked at him.

"And what happened?"

Ryan swallowed.

"He showed me a room."

"What was inside?"

"A coffin."

Charlotte stopped.

"What?"

Ryan's face had gone pale.

"There was a man inside."

"Who?"

"Andrew."

Charlotte's heart stopped.

"You saw him?"

"Yes."

"Alive?"

Ryan hesitated.

"No."

Charlotte looked at him.

"You said Andrew was alive."

"I said I didn't know."

"You saw his body."

Ryan nodded.

"Then why did you say he was alive?"

"Because the body wasn't Andrew."

Silence.

Charlotte's pulse thundered.

"What?"

Ryan continued.

"Your father wanted me to believe Andrew was dead."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Arthur suddenly spoke.

"He's telling the truth."

Charlotte turned.

Arthur looked grim.

"I saw the body too."

Charlotte stared.

"You never told me."

"I couldn't."

"Why?"

Arthur looked at her.

"Because the body had Andrew's fingerprints."

Charlotte froze.

"Then it was him."

"No."

Arthur shook his head.

"The fingerprints were real."

"But?"

"The DNA wasn't."

The tunnel ended at a steel door.

Ryan entered a code.

The door opened.

Inside was a small underground room.

A desk.

A chair.

A computer.

A single lamp.

And photographs covering the walls.

Charlotte stepped forward.

She recognized herself.

At twenty.

Twenty-two.

Twenty-five.

Her wedding.

Her first spa.

Her first major expansion.

Her home.

Her daily routine.

She stared in horror.

"Someone has been watching me."

Ryan nodded.

"For years."

Charlotte moved closer.

Then she saw Sabrina.

Photographs of Sabrina appeared too.

School.

College.

Her first job.

Her relationship with Ryan.

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

"Why was Sabrina being watched?"

Ryan didn't answer.

Then Charlotte noticed something else.

A third collection of photographs.

A woman.

Dark hair.

Older.

Standing outside a Swiss clinic.

Charlotte knew her immediately.

Her mother.

Mara.

Alive.

Charlotte whispered:

"She's been here."

Ryan nodded.

"Many times."

"Why?"

"Because this was your father's command center."

Charlotte looked at the desk.

A computer screen was still glowing.

One file was open.

PROJECT SECOND DAUGHTER.

Charlotte clicked it.

The first line read:

SUBJECT: SABRINA MONROE

The second:

OBJECTIVE: REINTRODUCE INTO BENNETT FAMILY

The third:

STATUS: SUCCESSFUL

Charlotte's stomach twisted.

She kept reading.

SECONDARY OBJECTIVE: DESTABILIZE CHARLOTTE BENNETT

Her hands trembled.

TERTIARY OBJECTIVE: TRANSFER CONTROL OF BENNETT FAMILY RESERVE

Then the final line:

EXECUTION AGENT: RYAN COLLINS

Charlotte slowly turned toward her husband.

Ryan didn't move.

"Tell me that's fake."

He looked at her.

"I wish it were."

"You were assigned to destroy me."

"Yes."

Charlotte's eyes filled with anger.

"And Sabrina?"

"She was assigned to replace you."

Charlotte laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

She turned back toward the computer.

Then something caught her eye.

A hidden folder.

PROJECT SECOND WOMAN — PHASE TWO

She opened it.

A video appeared.

The timestamp was from eight months earlier.

Sabrina sat across from Charles Bennett.

Charlotte's father.

Alive.

He looked older.

Thinner.

But unmistakably himself.

Sabrina spoke first.

"When do I get the company?"

Charles smiled.

"When Charlotte trusts you."

Sabrina frowned.

"What if she doesn't?"

Charles leaned forward.

"Then make her hate you."

Charlotte stopped breathing.

Sabrina asked:

"And Ryan?"

Charles answered:

"Make him betray her."

The video ended.

Charlotte stood frozen.

Ryan whispered:

"Charlotte..."

She turned toward him.

"Get out."

He stared.

"Please."

"Get out!"

Ryan stepped backward.

Arthur moved toward him.

Charlotte pointed at the door.

"I said get out."

Ryan left.

The steel door closed.

Charlotte remained staring at the black screen.

For years she had believed her husband had fallen in love with another woman.

Now she understood something far worse.

The affair had been engineered.

The humiliation had been planned.

The mistress had been planted.

And the man behind it all was her father.

At sunrise, Charlotte stood alone on the Monarch's rooftop.

Manhattan stretched beneath her.

Millions of people were beginning their day.

Cars moved.

Taxis crossed avenues.

Office lights turned on.

Nobody knew that beneath one of the city's most luxurious hotels, a family war had just been uncovered.

Arthur approached.

"You should sleep."

"I can't."

He stood beside her.

"Charlotte."

She looked at him.

"Was Sabrina really my sister?"

Arthur nodded.

"Yes."

"Does my mother know?"

"Yes."

"Does my father?"

"Yes."

"Does Sabrina know?"

Arthur hesitated.

"Now she does."

Charlotte turned.

"How?"

Arthur handed her a phone.

A live video feed was open.

Sabrina stood inside the hotel lobby.

She was crying.

Her father stood behind her.

And beside them...

Charles Bennett.

Charlotte's father.

Alive.

Charles looked directly into the security camera.

As if he knew Charlotte was watching.

He raised one hand.

Not a wave.

A warning.

Then he spoke.

Even through the security feed, his voice was unmistakable.

"Charlotte."

She froze.

"You've been looking for the truth."

He smiled.

"Now come and take it."

The feed went black.

Charlotte stared at the screen.

Arthur whispered:

"What are you going to do?"

Charlotte slipped the phone into her pocket.

For the first time since the nightmare began, she wasn't crying.

She wasn't shaking.

She wasn't afraid.

She looked toward the elevator.

"Meet my father."

"And Sabrina?"

Charlotte paused.

"Bring her too."

"Why?"

Charlotte's expression hardened.

"Because she wanted my throne."

She stepped into the elevator.

"Now she can watch me take it back."

The doors closed.

And somewhere beneath the city, three people who had spent years manipulating Charlotte were waiting.

Her husband.

Her half-sister.

And her supposedly dead father.

But they had made one mistake.

They had assumed Charlotte was still the woman who stood silently while Sabrina dropped ten dollars at her feet.

She wasn't.

That woman had disappeared in the Monarch Grand lobby.

What remained was the woman who owned the building.

May you like

And she had finally learned who her enemies were.

Now she was going to make them turn on each other.
