CHAPTER 7 — THE HOSTILE TAKEOVER

CHAPTER 7 — THE HOSTILE TAKEOVER
At 11:47 p.m., Charlotte Bennett stood in the private elevator of the Monarch Grand with a brass key clenched inside her fist.
She could still hear Ethan's voice in her head.
"The system recognized your father."
Impossible.
Her father had been dead for seven years.
Yet somewhere beneath the hotel, someone—or something—had just accessed a restricted archive using credentials that belonged exclusively to Charles Bennett.
Charlotte pressed the button for the basement levels.
The elevator began descending.
Level 1.
Level 2.
Level 3.
Then the display changed.
AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.
Charlotte entered the brass key into the security reader.
The light turned green.
The doors opened.
Ethan was waiting.
Two security officers stood behind him.
Arthur Vale was there too.
Charlotte stepped out.
"Where is Ryan?"
"Still missing."
"Sabrina?"
"Secured upstairs."
Charlotte looked at Ethan.
"Show me the archive."
Ethan hesitated.
"There's a problem."
"Of course there is."
"The archive door won't open."
"Why?"
"Because it requires your father's biometric authorization."
Charlotte stared at him.
"My father's dead."
"I know."
"Then how did someone get inside?"
"We don't know."
Arthur stepped forward.
"There's another possibility."
Charlotte looked at him.
"What?"
"Your father may have planned for this."
She stared.
"Seven years ago?"
Arthur nodded.
"Your father planned everything."
Charlotte looked at the sealed steel door.
"Then let's find out what he planned."
The archive door was enormous.
Unlike the polished elegance of the Monarch Grand, this corridor looked industrial.
No marble.
No chandeliers.
Only concrete, steel, cameras, and thick security doors.
Ethan entered a code.
Nothing happened.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
Charlotte placed her palm against the scanner.
A voice came through the speaker.
"Identity required."
Charlotte answered.
"Charlotte Bennett."
Silence.
Then:
"Relationship to Charles Bennett?"
Charlotte frowned.
"Daughter."
Another pause.
"Authorization denied."
Ethan looked at her.
Arthur whispered:
"Try something else."
Charlotte stared at the scanner.
Then she remembered something her father used to say when she was a child.
Whenever she asked why he locked his study at night, he would smile and say:
"Some doors aren't meant to open because you knock."
Charlotte closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
"Family."
The scanner flashed green.
The steel door unlocked.
Nobody moved.
Ethan stared.
Arthur slowly exhaled.
Charlotte pushed the door open.
Inside was a room unlike anything she had ever seen.
Shelves covered every wall.
Thousands of files.
Hard drives.
Old ledgers.
Photographs.
Video archives.
Documents sealed in numbered containers.
And in the center stood a single black desk.
On it sat an envelope.
Her name was written across the front.
CHARLOTTE.
She approached slowly.
"Don't touch it," Arthur warned.
Charlotte stopped.
"Why?"
"Because your father never left anything without a reason."
She looked at him.
"Exactly."
She opened the envelope.
Inside was one handwritten page.
Her father's handwriting.
If you are reading this, the family has already begun to fracture.
Charlotte's throat tightened.
She continued.
Do not trust the board.
She looked at Arthur.
Then Ethan.
Then back at the letter.
Do not trust the banks.
Her eyes moved lower.
And above all, do not trust the man who tells you he can save the company.
Charlotte froze.
Arthur's face changed.
"What's wrong?"
She looked at him.
"Nothing."
But something was wrong.
Because there was only one man who had been telling her exactly that.
Arthur Vale.
At 12:03 a.m., the board's emergency meeting began.
Not at the Monarch.
Not at Bennett Global headquarters.
At a private conference center across the street.
The board had been summoned by Gregory Price.
Charlotte entered last.
Twenty-three people were waiting.
Gregory stood at the head of the table.
Ryan's chair was empty.
So was Charlotte's.
Gregory smiled.
"Charlotte."
She sat.
"What is this?"
Gregory placed a folder in front of her.
"An emergency governance proposal."
Charlotte opened it.
Her expression didn't change.
"You've called a hostile takeover meeting."
Gregory's smile widened.
"I prefer the term restructuring."
"Of my company."
"Of a company currently facing severe financial exposure."
Charlotte looked around the table.
"Who authorized this?"
Gregory raised a hand.
"The board."
Charlotte glanced at Helen Shaw.
Helen avoided her eyes.
Interesting.
"How many votes?"
"Fourteen."
"Out of?"
"Twenty-five."
Charlotte leaned back.
"So you have a majority."
"For now."
She smiled faintly.
"What makes you think you control the company?"
Gregory's expression hardened.
"Because you are compromised."
Charlotte laughed softly.
"Compromised by what?"
"Your personal relationship with Ryan Collins."
Several directors looked uncomfortable.
Gregory continued.
"You are emotionally unstable."
Charlotte's smile disappeared.
"You think I'm unstable?"
"I think your judgment has been impaired."
"Because my husband betrayed me?"
"Because you are allowing personal revenge to interfere with corporate governance."
Charlotte looked around the room.
"And who appointed you judge?"
Gregory didn't answer.
Charlotte opened the folder.
There was a resolution.
TEMPORARY REMOVAL OF CHARLOTTE BENNETT AS EXECUTIVE CHAIR.
She read it calmly.
Then closed it.
"You've been preparing this for months."
Gregory said nothing.
Charlotte looked at him.
"Not days."
Silence.
"Months."
Gregory's expression gave him away.
Charlotte smiled.
"That's what I thought."
A director named Thomas Reed cleared his throat.
"Charlotte, nobody wants this to become personal."
"It already is."
"We're trying to protect the company."
"No."
Charlotte placed another document on the table.
"You're trying to protect yourselves."
She slid it toward Thomas.
He looked down.
His face went pale.
"What is this?"
"Your Cayman account."
Thomas stared.
"You've been receiving payments from Monroe Strategic Holdings."
His mouth opened.
"No."
Charlotte placed another page beside it.
"Six hundred and eighty thousand dollars."
Then another.
"Over eighteen months."
Then another.
"Through a consulting company registered in your wife's name."
Nobody spoke.
Charlotte looked around.
"Would anyone else like to discuss corporate integrity?"
Thomas pushed the papers away.
"This is illegal."
"No."
Charlotte's voice was cold.
"What's illegal is stealing from a company."
She pointed toward the documents.
"Receiving money isn't illegal."
"But concealing it from the board is."
Thomas stood.
"You can't threaten me."
"I'm not threatening you."
She looked at him.
"I'm documenting you."
Thomas sat back down.
Gregory's jaw tightened.
"Enough."
Charlotte turned.
"You haven't even seen the worst of it."
Gregory stepped closer.
"What exactly do you think you have?"
Charlotte smiled.
"Your entire plan."
At 12:31 a.m., the screen behind Charlotte illuminated.
A timeline appeared.
PROJECT MONARCH
Year 1.
Year 2.
Year 3.
Year 4.
Every year contained transfers.
Shell companies.
Private meetings.
Acquisitions.
Bribes.
Loans.
And eventually...
Ryan Collins.
The room erupted.
"What is this?"
"How did she get that?"
"Is this real?"
Gregory shouted:
"Turn it off!"
Nobody moved.
Charlotte continued.
"My husband wasn't simply having an affair."
She clicked.
A document appeared.
"Ryan was recruited."
Another click.
"Funded."
Another.
"Positioned."
Another.
"And eventually placed inside my company."
A director whispered:
"By whom?"
Charlotte looked directly at Gregory.
"Samuel Monroe."
Gregory's face went blank.
Charlotte noticed.
So did everyone else.
At 12:39 a.m., Gregory stood.
"This is fabricated."
Charlotte looked at him.
"Really?"
"Yes."
"Then explain this."
A photograph appeared.
Gregory.
Samuel Monroe.
Ryan.
Ten years ago.
The room became silent.
Gregory shook his head.
"I was there for business."
"Before Ryan married me?"
"Yes."
"Discussing me?"
"No."
Charlotte clicked again.
Audio played.
Gregory's own voice.
"Once Charlotte marries Ryan, we can begin the asset transition."
A director gasped.
Gregory lunged toward the laptop.
Security blocked him.
"Get out of my way!"
Charlotte stood.
"Sit down."
Gregory glared at her.
"You think you've won?"
"No."
She smiled.
"I think you're frightened."
At 12:44 a.m., every phone in the room buzzed.
One after another.
The same message.
BENNETT GLOBAL BOARD ACCESS SUSPENDED.
Everyone looked around.
Charlotte's phone remained silent.
Gregory stared at his screen.
"What did you do?"
Charlotte looked at him.
"Nothing."
"Then who did this?"
She didn't know.
Ethan entered the room.
He was pale.
"Charlotte."
"What?"
"The bank accounts have been frozen."
She stood.
"Which ones?"
"All corporate accounts."
Her expression changed.
"All?"
"Except one."
"Which?"
"The Monarch reserve account."
Charlotte frowned.
"Who authorized the freeze?"
Ethan looked at her.
"The Federal Court."
Charlotte's blood ran cold.
"What?"
A second security officer entered.
"Madam Chair."
He handed her an envelope.
"Delivered by federal courier."
Charlotte opened it.
The first page read:
EMERGENCY ASSET RESTRAINT ORDER.
She scanned the signature.
Her face changed.
"This isn't possible."
Arthur took the document.
"What?"
Charlotte pointed.
"Look at the judge."
Arthur read the name.
His face hardened.
"Judge Daniel Monroe."
Silence.
Charlotte stared at the page.
"Samuel's son."
At 1:03 a.m., the doors opened.
Daniel Monroe entered.
He looked nothing like his father.
Late thirties.
Dark hair.
Tired eyes.
No expensive suit.
Just a simple navy jacket.
He looked directly at Charlotte.
"I'm sorry."
Charlotte stared.
"You froze my company."
"I froze the assets your father told me to protect."
"You're a federal judge."
"Not anymore."
"What?"
Daniel held up his resignation letter.
"I resigned tonight."
Charlotte's expression tightened.
"Why?"
"Because my father has been manipulating the courts for years."
The room went silent.
Daniel walked toward her.
"And because the hostile takeover you just discovered..."
He placed a file on the table.
"...wasn't the real takeover."
Charlotte opened it.
Inside were documents.
Property transfers.
Stock movements.
Trust modifications.
Then one document caught her eye.
BENNETT GLOBAL — CONTROL TRANSFER AGREEMENT
Her signature was at the bottom.
Charlotte stared.
"I never signed this."
Daniel nodded.
"I know."
"Then who did?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Your husband."
Charlotte's blood ran cold.
"He forged my signature?"
"Yes."
"How long ago?"
"Three months."
Charlotte looked at the date.
Three months.
That was when Ryan had started traveling more.
When he began acting distant.
When Sabrina entered the picture publicly.
When Charlotte had believed her marriage was falling apart.
She had been looking at the wrong disaster.
The marriage hadn't been the target.
The company had.
At 1:19 a.m., Ryan finally appeared.
Security brought him into the room.
He looked exhausted.
His face was bruised.
Charlotte stood.
"Where were you?"
Ryan looked at her.
"I was trying to stop them."
"Stop who?"
"Samuel."
Charlotte laughed bitterly.
"You?"
Ryan looked toward Daniel.
Then back at her.
"I know what you think."
"You've earned every thought."
"I didn't forge your signature."
Charlotte froze.
"Then who did?"
Ryan hesitated.
"Gregory."
Everyone looked at Gregory.
He shouted:
"He's lying."
Ryan shook his head.
"He isn't the one running this."
Charlotte's voice became quiet.
"Who is?"
Ryan looked directly at her.
"You."
Charlotte stared.
"What?"
Ryan swallowed.
"Your father designed Bennett Global so only a Bennett could legally control it."
Charlotte nodded.
"I know."
"But there was a backup."
"What backup?"
"A successor."
Charlotte's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Ryan looked at Daniel.
Daniel's expression changed.
Then Ryan said:
"Your brother."
Charlotte went completely still.
"I don't have a brother."
Ryan whispered:
"Not officially."
The room exploded into questions.
Charlotte heard none of them.
Her father had never mentioned a son.
Her mother had never mentioned a son.
There had been only Charlotte.
At least, that's what she had believed.
She turned toward Daniel.
"You knew?"
Daniel looked away.
"My father told me."
"Tell me now."
Daniel sighed.
"Your father had a son before he married your mother."
Charlotte stared.
"Who?"
"His name was Andrew."
"Where is he?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Dead."
Charlotte's heart sank.
"When?"
"Seven years ago."
The same year her father died.
Charlotte felt the room tilt.
"What happened?"
Daniel looked at her.
"That's the question."
At 1:42 a.m., Charlotte returned to the Monarch archive.
She walked straight to the black desk.
Opened another drawer.
Inside was a photograph.
Her father.
A young woman.
And a boy.
On the back:
Andrew — age 8.
Charlotte stared.
Her half-brother.
A child she had never known existed.
Beneath the photograph was another note.
Her father's handwriting.
Charlotte, if Andrew is dead, assume the story you were given is false.
Charlotte's fingers trembled.
She turned the page.
If both Andrew and I die within the same year, do not trust anyone claiming to protect you.
Charlotte slowly sat down.
Her father's death.
Andrew's death.
Ryan's recruitment.
Samuel.
The hotel.
The archive.
The hostile takeover.
All of it suddenly seemed connected.
Then she noticed something written at the bottom of the page.
A single name.
Mara Bennett.
Charlotte frowned.
Her mother's name.
She turned the page.
There was one final sentence.
Your mother knows where Andrew is buried.
Charlotte stopped.
Her mother had been dead for twelve years.
At least...
That was what Charlotte had always been told.
Her heart began pounding.
Because suddenly there were too many dead people.
Too many secrets.
Too many lies.
And not enough graves.
At 2:07 a.m., Charlotte's phone rang.
A private number.
She answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
"Charlotte."
Charlotte froze.
She knew that voice.
Impossible.
"M... Mom?"
Silence.
Then:
"Don't trust anyone at the Monarch."
Charlotte stood so quickly her chair fell backward.
"Mom?"
The voice whispered again.
"Your father didn't die."
Charlotte's blood ran cold.
"What?"
"Neither did Andrew."
Charlotte's hands shook.
"Where are you?"
The line crackled.
"Charlotte, listen to me."
"I'm listening."
"Ryan isn't your enemy."
Charlotte stared into the darkness.
"What?"
"He's trapped."
"By who?"
A pause.
Then:
"By the man who owns the debt."
Charlotte's heart pounded.
"Who?"
The answer came softly.
"Your father."
The line went dead.
Charlotte stood alone in the archive.
Her mother's voice had vanished.
But her final words remained.
Your father.
For seven years, Charlotte had believed Charles Bennett was the victim.
Now she wasn't sure.
Maybe he had been the architect.
Maybe Samuel Monroe wasn't trying to steal Bennett Global.
Maybe he was trying to take something back.
And somewhere in the Monarch Grand, hidden beneath millions of dollars of luxury and decades of secrets, Charlotte was beginning to understand the terrifying truth:
May you like
The hostile takeover had never been about the company.
It was about control of the Bennett family itself.
