CHAPTER 10 — THE DIVORCE TRAP

CHAPTER 10 — THE DIVORCE TRAP

Michael's gun was pointed directly at Daniel.

Rachel couldn't breathe.

Outside the windows, three black cars rolled silently into the driveway.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared at Michael.

“You were working for Richard.”

Michael didn't deny it.

“I was working for the person who paid me.”

Rachel's eyes hardened.

“And who paid you?”

Michael glanced at her.

“Your husband.”

Silence.

Daniel's face went white.

“That isn't true.”

Michael smiled.

“You want to tell her?”

Rachel turned toward Daniel.

“Tell me what?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Michael is lying.”

“Then prove it.”

Michael reached into his pocket and tossed a folder onto the table.

It landed beside the recorder.

Rachel opened it.

The first page was a photograph.

Her.

Standing outside a restaurant.

The second was another.

Rachel sitting across from a man she barely recognized.

The third showed the same man touching her arm.

Rachel stared.

“What is this?”

Michael said nothing.

Daniel did.

“They've been following you.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked away.

Rachel flipped through the photographs.

There were dozens.

Rachel entering a hotel.

Rachel speaking to a colleague.

Rachel having coffee with a male friend.

Rachel laughing at a restaurant.

Every photograph had been carefully selected.

Every image made innocent moments look intimate.

Then she found a document.

A draft divorce petition.

Her name was listed as the respondent.

Daniel's name was listed as the petitioner.

Rachel's heart sank.

“What is this?”

Daniel remained silent.

She read the next page.

Grounds for divorce: marital misconduct.

Rachel looked up.

“Whose misconduct?”

Michael answered.

“Yours.”

Rachel stared at Daniel.

“You were going to accuse me of cheating?”

Daniel whispered:

“I never wanted it to go that far.”

“You filed the papers.”

“I didn't sign them.”

Rachel looked at the signature.

It was Daniel's.

She knew it.

“You didn't sign this?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Michael smiled.

“That's the question.”

Rachel looked back at the photographs.

Suddenly everything made sense.

The suspicious messages.

The anonymous invitations.

The strange man who had appeared at her workplace.

The flowers she'd received from someone she didn't know.

The hotel reservation she'd never made.

The rumors.

The carefully planted evidence.

It wasn't random.

Someone had been building a case against her.

Rachel whispered:

“They were setting me up.”

Michael nodded.

“For months.”

Daniel looked devastated.

“Rachel…”

She turned toward him.

“How long did you know?”

Daniel said nothing.

“How long?”

“Six months.”

Rachel stared.

Six months.

“You knew they were framing me.”

“Yes.”

“And you didn't tell me.”

“I was trying to stop it.”

“By doing what?”

Daniel's eyes filled with shame.

“By making you believe I was leaving you first.”

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“You wanted me to think I was losing you.”

“Yes.”

“So I'd make a mistake.”

Daniel lowered his head.

“Yes.”

Rachel's voice became dangerously calm.

“You wanted me to cheat.”

“No.”

“You wanted me to appear to cheat.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Rachel stepped closer.

“Why?”

“Because Richard needed you to be legally at fault.”

“And what would that do?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Michael did.

“It would destroy your claim to the trust.”

Rachel looked at the documents.

Michael continued.

“Your father built safeguards into the inheritance agreement. If you were proven to have committed marital misconduct before the transfer date, Richard could challenge your eligibility.”

Rachel's stomach turned.

“So the divorce wasn't about Emily.”

“No.”

“It wasn't about love.”

“No.”

“It was about the trust.”

“Yes.”

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“And you were going to let me become the villain.”

Daniel whispered:

“I thought I could control it.”

Rachel stared at him.

“You couldn't.”

“No.”

“You didn't.”

“No.”

“And you nearly destroyed me.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Rachel picked up another document.

It was a hotel booking.

Her name.

A man's name beside hers.

Room 817.

The date was three weeks earlier.

Rachel remembered that night.

She had been home.

Alone.

Watching television.

She had never been near that hotel.

She looked at Daniel.

“You knew this was fake.”

“Yes.”

“And you did nothing.”

“I was trying to find who created it.”

“You had six months.”

“I know.”

Rachel's eyes filled with tears.

“You keep saying you know.”

Daniel looked broken.

“I don't know how to fix this.”

Rachel laughed softly.

“You don't.”

She put the documents down.

“I do.”

Daniel looked at her.

Rachel picked up the recorder.

“I expose everything.”

Michael stepped forward.

“You can't.”

Rachel turned.

“Why?”

“Because the evidence isn't complete.”

“I have the recording.”

“You have one recording.”

“I have the photographs.”

“Which could be dismissed as circumstantial.”

“The divorce petition.”

“Forgery.”

“The trust agreement.”

“Contested.”

Rachel stared at him.

“What do you want?”

Michael's expression changed.

“The original evidence.”

“What original evidence?”

“The file Richard used to create the divorce trap.”

Rachel frowned.

“Where is it?”

Michael hesitated.

“Inside the Bennett family vault.”

Rachel looked toward Daniel.

“You know where it is.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then we're going.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

Rachel's eyes narrowed.

“You're not coming.”

“I mean you can't go.”

“Why?”

“Because the vault is protected.”

“By what?”

Michael looked at Daniel.

“Your marriage.”

Rachel froze.

Daniel whispered:

“The vault can only be opened by both spouses.”

Rachel stared.

“So Richard designed the entire system around us.”

“Yes.”

“And he expected us to stay married.”

“Yes.”

“Then the divorce trap was never meant to end the marriage.”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

Rachel understood.

“It was meant to make me lose the marriage and the trust at the same time.”

Daniel nodded.

Rachel's hands trembled.

“How much did he stand to gain?”

Michael answered.

“Everything.”

Two hours later, Rachel stood outside the Bennett headquarters.

The building towered over downtown Chicago.

Glass.

Steel.

Money.

Power.

Everything Richard had built.

Daniel stood beside her.

Neither spoke.

Rachel looked at him.

“Do you remember our wedding?”

“Yes.”

“Did you love me that day?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

Daniel looked down.

“Because I believed Richard could hurt you.”

“He already did.”

“I know.”

Rachel turned toward the building.

“Then let's finish this.”

They entered through a private entrance.

Daniel used his access card.

The elevator descended.

Level B7.

Rachel had never known the building had underground levels.

The doors opened.

A security guard approached.

Daniel showed his identification.

The guard looked at Rachel.

Then back at Daniel.

“You're sure?”

Daniel nodded.

“She has authorization.”

Rachel noticed something.

The guard wasn't looking at her like a stranger.

He looked afraid.

The elevator doors closed behind them.

They continued deeper underground.

Finally, they reached a steel door.

Daniel entered a code.

Nothing happened.

He turned toward Rachel.

“Your hand.”

Rachel placed her palm on the scanner.

A light flashed.

The door unlocked.

Rachel stared.

“Why does it recognize me?”

Daniel whispered:

“Because your father designed it.”

The door opened.

Inside was a vault.

Rows of boxes.

Documents.

Hard drives.

Photographs.

Contracts.

Rachel walked forward.

Then stopped.

One box carried her name.

RACHEL BENNETT — DIVORCE CONTINGENCY.

She opened it.

Inside was everything.

The flowers.

The anonymous letters.

The hotel reservation.

The fake messages.

The photographs.

The forged statements.

Even a draft confession.

Rachel read it.

It was written in her name.

A confession to adultery.

A confession she had never made.

She looked at Daniel.

“You had planned everything.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn't.”

“Then who did?”

A voice came from behind them.

“Your father.”

Rachel spun around.

Richard stood in the doorway.

Older than she remembered.

But very much alive.

Rachel stared.

“You're supposed to be dead.”

Richard smiled.

“So was Margaret.”

Daniel stepped in front of Rachel.

Richard laughed.

“You still think you can protect her?”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Richard looked at Rachel.

“You have no idea how much trouble you've caused.”

Rachel held up the divorce confession.

“You forged this.”

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“You signed it.”

“I never did.”

“You will.”

Rachel stared.

Richard continued:

“Because tomorrow, this will become public.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You can't.”

Richard looked at him.

“You've already lost.”

Then he looked at Rachel.

“By tomorrow morning, every newspaper in Chicago will believe you cheated on your husband.”

Rachel's blood ran cold.

“And you think I'll surrender?”

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“I think you'll panic.”

He nodded toward Daniel.

“And when you panic, you'll do exactly what he was trained to make you do.”

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“What does he mean?”

Daniel said nothing.

Richard laughed.

“Ask him.”

Rachel turned toward her husband.

“What was the final step?”

Daniel's face went pale.

“Rachel…”

“What was the final step?”

Richard answered for him.

“He was supposed to catch you with another man.”

Rachel froze.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Richard continued:

“Then you would beg for a divorce.”

Rachel stared at Daniel.

“You were going to stage it.”

“Yes.”

“You were going to bring someone into my life.”

“Yes.”

“You were going to make me believe I was falling in love with another man.”

Daniel's voice broke.

“Yes.”

Rachel stepped backward.

“How?”

Richard smiled.

“We already chose him.”

Rachel's stomach turned.

“Who?”

Richard's smile widened.

“Michael.”

Rachel froze.

The room went silent.

Michael.

The man who had helped her.

The man who had guided her.

The man who had warned her.

The man who had stood beside her.

Michael stepped into the vault.

Rachel turned toward him.

He looked ashamed.

“I didn't know how to tell you.”

Rachel's voice was barely audible.

“You were the man in the photographs.”

Michael nodded.

“The restaurants.”

“Yes.”

“The hotel.”

“Yes.”

“The flowers.”

“Yes.”

Rachel's eyes filled with tears.

“You were supposed to seduce me.”

Michael looked down.

“Yes.”

Daniel whispered:

“I stopped him.”

Rachel turned.

“You knew?”

Daniel nodded.

“I found out.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

Rachel's voice cracked.

“And you still let Michael stay beside me.”

“I needed him.”

“To protect me?”

“Yes.”

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps using that word.”

She turned toward Michael.

“Did you ever care about me?”

Michael looked at her.

“Yes.”

Rachel's eyes hardened.

“That makes it worse.”

Michael swallowed.

“I was supposed to destroy your marriage.”

“But you didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

He looked at her.

“Because I fell in love with you.”

Silence.

Daniel stared at him.

Richard laughed.

“This is pathetic.”

Rachel ignored him.

She looked at the evidence.

Then at Daniel.

Then Michael.

Then Richard.

For twelve years, they had all believed Rachel was the easiest person to manipulate.

The trusting wife.

The obedient daughter.

The woman who would cry when betrayed.

The woman who would sign whatever was put in front of her.

They were wrong.

Rachel picked up the recorder.

She pressed play.

Richard's own voice filled the vault.

“Make her hate him.”

Richard's smile disappeared.

Rachel pressed another recording.

Daniel's voice.

“I will do whatever it takes to keep her alive.”

Richard's face hardened.

Rachel held up the fake confession.

“You wanted me to become the guilty wife.”

She smiled.

“But you forgot one thing.”

Richard stared.

“What?”

Rachel stepped closer.

“I've spent twelve years learning how your family lies.”

She lifted the document.

“And now I'm going to teach the world.”

Richard's expression changed.

“You wouldn't.”

Rachel looked him directly in the eyes.

“I will.”

Then every light in the vault suddenly went out.

The door slammed shut.

A security alarm began screaming.

Rachel heard Michael shout.

Daniel grabbed her hand.

And from somewhere in the darkness came a woman's voice.

“Rachel.”

She froze.

Emily.

“Don't move.”

Rachel's heart pounded.

“Emily?”

The voice whispered:

“They found the original.”

Rachel looked around.

“What original?”

A single emergency light flickered on.

At the far end of the vault stood Emily.

Holding a black folder.

She looked directly at Rachel.

And said:

“The original divorce trap.”

Rachel stared.

Emily's next words made her blood run cold.

“It proves Daniel was never supposed to divorce you.”

Rachel looked at Daniel.

May you like

Emily continued:

“He was supposed to kill you.”
