CHAPTER 9 — THE RECORDING

CHAPTER 9 — THE RECORDING

The door clicked shut behind Michael.

Rachel stared at him.

Daniel stood several feet away, pale and motionless.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Michael smiled.

It wasn't a nervous smile.

It wasn't the smile of a man caught in a misunderstanding.

It was calm.

Almost amused.

“You finally found it,” he said.

Rachel tightened her grip around the photograph of the two babies.

“Found what?”

“The truth.”

Her voice hardened.

“You mean the truth you buried?”

Michael stepped farther into the room.

“Your father buried it.”

“My father tried to protect me.”

“No,” Michael said quietly. “Your father tried to control what happened after his death.”

Rachel stared at him.

“Why have you been following me?”

“I haven't.”

“You knew about the letter.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the money.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Emily.”

Michael's expression barely changed.

“Yes.”

Rachel felt something inside her go cold.

“Then you knew everything.”

“Almost.”

“What don't you know?”

Michael looked at Daniel.

“The part Daniel still refuses to tell you.”

Rachel turned toward her husband.

Daniel lowered his head.

Michael smiled.

“Ask him about the recording.”

Rachel froze.

“What recording?”

Daniel looked up sharply.

“Michael.”

“It's over,” Michael said.

“No,” Daniel replied.

“It ended the moment she found the trust agreement.”

Rachel stepped between them.

“What recording?”

Neither answered.

Rachel slammed the photograph onto the table.

“Tell me.”

Daniel finally spoke.

“There was a recording made twelve years ago.”

Rachel's heart began pounding.

“Of what?”

“A meeting.”

“Between whom?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Your father.”

“Richard?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Me and Richard.”

Rachel stopped breathing.

“When?”

“Three days before our wedding.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“You and Richard met before my wedding?”

“Yes.”

“What did you discuss?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Rachel's voice became colder.

“What did you discuss?”

Michael interrupted.

“Your removal.”

Rachel stared at him.

“From the marriage?”

“Yes.”

Her stomach turned.

“You planned to divorce me before you even married me?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Rachel—”

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You planned it.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Michael stepped closer.

“Your husband agreed to a plan.”

“What plan?”

“To make you believe the marriage was failing naturally.”

Rachel stared at Daniel.

“You cheated on me because of that plan?”

Daniel looked broken.

“Yes.”

“You brought Emily into our lives because of that plan?”

“Yes.”

“You lied about the hospital.”

“Yes.”

“You stole money from our account.”

“No.”

Rachel's expression hardened.

“Then who did?”

Michael answered.

“Richard.”

Rachel looked at him.

“And Daniel?”

“He knew.”

Silence.

Rachel turned toward Daniel.

“You knew.”

Daniel couldn't meet her eyes.

“Yes.”

She whispered:

“And you let me blame myself.”

Daniel's voice broke.

“I thought if you hated me, you'd leave.”

Rachel stared at him.

“You wanted me to hate you.”

“Yes.”

“So why did you keep coming back?”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I couldn't stop loving you.”

Rachel looked away.

For the first time, his words didn't comfort her.

They disgusted her.

Love wasn't supposed to look like this.

Love wasn't supposed to require twelve years of lies.

Michael reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small black device.

Rachel recognized it immediately.

A digital recorder.

“The recording,” he said.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don't.”

Michael looked at him.

“You had twelve years to tell her.”

Then he placed the recorder on the table.

Rachel stared at it.

“What will I hear?”

“The truth.”

Michael pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

Rachel's heart stopped.

Her father's voice.

Older.

Tired.

Angry.

“You are asking me to destroy my daughter's life.”

Rachel covered her mouth.

She hadn't heard her father's voice in years.

Then another voice answered.

Richard.

“I'm asking you to save the family.”

Her father's voice became sharper.

“By sacrificing Rachel?”

Richard replied:

“By using the only person who can legally control the trust.”

Rachel's blood turned cold.

Her father said:

“She is my daughter.”

Richard laughed softly.

“Exactly.”

The recording continued.

Richard's voice became quieter.

“When she turns thirty-five, the trust transfers.”

Rachel stared at Daniel.

Daniel looked devastated.

Richard continued.

“If she remains married to Daniel until then, we lose control.”

Her father's voice:

“So you want the marriage destroyed.”

Richard:

“Before her thirty-fifth birthday.”

Rachel's breathing became shallow.

Then Daniel's younger voice entered the recording.

“And if she refuses to leave me?”

Richard answered:

“Make her.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

The next sentence nearly broke her.

“How?”

Richard replied:

“Give her someone else to blame.”

Silence.

Then Richard said:

“Emily.”

Rachel opened her eyes.

Daniel looked at her.

She whispered:

“She was part of the plan.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not at first.”

The recording continued.

Richard:

“Emily will make Rachel believe Daniel is cheating.”

Daniel:

“And if Rachel discovers who Emily is?”

Richard laughed.

“She won't.”

Rachel's hands trembled.

Her father's voice suddenly became furious.

“You will not use that girl.”

Richard replied:

“Then stop me.”

Her father:

“I will.”

A chair scraped against the floor.

Then Daniel's voice.

“Father, please.”

Richard:

“You have a choice, Daniel.”

Daniel:

“What choice?”

Richard:

“Protect Rachel and lose everything.”

A long silence.

Then:

“Or obey me and keep her alive.”

Rachel froze.

Daniel's voice was barely audible.

“What are you threatening?”

Richard answered:

“You know exactly what I'm threatening.”

The recording crackled.

Then Richard spoke again.

“Margaret.”

Rachel's heart stopped.

Daniel whispered:

“No.”

Richard:

“If you disobey me, your mother disappears.”

Rachel turned toward Daniel.

He was crying.

The recording continued.

Daniel:

“Leave my mother out of this.”

Richard:

“Then do what you're told.”

Rachel pressed both hands against her mouth.

Her husband had been trapped.

But he had still betrayed her.

He had still chosen silence.

The recording continued.

Richard:

“You will marry Rachel.”

Daniel:

“And then?”

Richard:

“You will make her hate you.”

Rachel shut her eyes.

Richard's final instruction was almost casual.

“When she finally asks for a divorce, you will give her one.”

The recording stopped.

Silence swallowed the room.

Rachel stared at Daniel.

He didn't move.

For twelve years, she had believed the worst thing her husband had done was cheat on her.

She had been wrong.

The affair had been deliberate.

The lies had been deliberate.

The emotional distance had been deliberate.

But one thing hadn't been deliberate.

His feelings.

And somehow that made everything worse.

Rachel walked toward Daniel.

He didn't move.

“Did you love me when we married?”

“Yes.”

“Did you love me when Emily came into our lives?”

“Yes.”

“Did you love me when you lied about the hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Did you love me when you kissed her at the airport?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Rachel slapped him.

The sound echoed through the room.

Daniel didn't defend himself.

“You don't get to call that love.”

“I know.”

“You don't get to destroy me and then tell me you were protecting me.”

“I know.”

“You should have trusted me.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

Rachel stepped backward.

“And I didn't betray you.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You're right.”

She wiped her tears.

“Who recorded that meeting?”

Michael answered.

“I did.”

Rachel looked at him.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father asked me to.”

Rachel's expression changed.

“My father knew?”

“He knew Richard was dangerous.”

“Then why didn't he give me the recording?”

Michael hesitated.

“Because he died before he could.”

Rachel stared.

“How?”

Michael didn't answer.

Daniel did.

“Richard had him killed.”

Rachel's breath caught.

Michael looked at Daniel.

“You weren't supposed to say that.”

Rachel turned.

“Is it true?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your father's death wasn't an accident.”

Rachel's knees weakened.

She grabbed the table.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“For twelve years?”

“Yes.”

Rachel looked at him with disbelief.

“You watched me mourn him.”

Daniel's voice broke.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

Rachel laughed through tears.

“You keep saying that.”

She pointed at the recorder.

“Then why did you let me live in a lie?”

Daniel couldn't answer.

Michael suddenly reached for the recorder.

Rachel stopped him.

“I'm keeping it.”

Michael looked at her.

“You shouldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because if Richard discovers you have it, he'll come after you.”

Rachel stared.

“He's already come after me.”

Michael's expression darkened.

“You don't understand.”

“No.”

Rachel picked up the recorder.

“You don't understand.”

She looked at Daniel.

“I'm done being protected.”

Daniel swallowed.

“What are you going to do?”

Rachel looked toward the window.

“Expose him.”

Michael shook his head.

“Not yet.”

Rachel turned.

“Why?”

“Because the recording proves Richard planned to destroy your marriage.”

“Exactly.”

“But it doesn't prove what he did with the money.”

Rachel looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

Michael pulled another device from his coat.

A laptop.

He opened it.

A folder appeared.

BENNETT TRUST — ORIGINAL RECORDINGS.

Rachel stared.

“There are more?”

Michael nodded.

“Twenty-seven.”

Rachel's heart pounded.

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

Daniel looked terrified.

Rachel noticed.

“What?”

Daniel whispered:

“You don't want to hear them.”

Rachel looked at him.

“That's exactly what you told me before.”

She sat down.

“Play them.”

Michael hesitated.

Then he opened the first file.

A recording began.

Richard's voice.

But this time he wasn't speaking to Daniel.

He was speaking to someone else.

A woman.

Rachel leaned closer.

Richard said:

“The girl must never meet her sister.”

The woman replied:

“What if they do?”

Richard:

“Then Emily dies.”

Rachel's heart stopped.

The woman gasped.

“She's your granddaughter.”

Richard answered coldly:

“She's an obstacle.”

Rachel looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the floor.

The recording continued.

Richard said something that changed everything.

“And Rachel must never learn that Daniel was not the one who started the affair.”

Rachel froze.

She turned toward Daniel.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel looked at her.

His face had gone completely white.

Rachel's voice sharpened.

“Daniel.”

He whispered:

“I didn't know.”

“Didn't know what?”

“That Emily was being used.”

Rachel stared.

“What are you talking about?”

Daniel looked at Michael.

Michael slowly closed the laptop.

“There's something else you need to know.”

Rachel stood.

“No more secrets.”

Michael nodded.

“Emily didn't enter your marriage five years ago.”

Rachel's heart pounded.

“She was placed there.”

“By Richard?”

“No.”

Michael looked at Daniel.

“By someone much closer to you.”

Rachel felt cold.

“Who?”

Michael didn't answer.

Daniel did.

“Your mother.”

Rachel froze.

“My mother is dead.”

Daniel shook his head.

“The woman who raised you is.”

Rachel stared.

“Then who are you talking about?”

Daniel whispered:

“Margaret.”

Rachel's blood ran cold.

“She arranged for Emily to meet me?”

“No.”

“She arranged the affair?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Daniel looked directly at her.

“Margaret was the one who sent Emily to me.”

Rachel couldn't breathe.

“Why?”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“Because she wanted us to find each other.”

Rachel stared.

“Then why did she lie?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Because she knew Richard would kill you both if he discovered the truth.”

Rachel looked down at the recorder.

The device suddenly seemed heavier than a weapon.

It was proof.

Proof that her marriage had been manipulated.

Proof that Richard had planned her destruction.

Proof that Daniel had participated.

But it was also proof of something else.

Someone had been trying to reunite the sisters.

Someone had been fighting Richard from inside the family.

And Rachel had no idea who was winning.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

A woman's voice whispered:

“Rachel.”

Rachel froze.

She recognized it.

Emily.

“I know you found the recording.”

Rachel's heart raced.

“Where are you?”

Emily ignored the question.

“You need to listen carefully.”

“Tell me where you are.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard knows.”

Rachel's blood turned cold.

“Knows what?”

Emily's voice cracked.

“That you have the recording.”

A pause.

Then Emily whispered:

“And he's coming for you.”

Rachel looked toward the window.

Outside, headlights appeared at the end of the driveway.

One car.

Then another.

Then a third.

Daniel stood.

Michael reached for the lights.

Rachel's phone was still pressed to her ear.

Emily whispered one final sentence.

“Rachel…”

“What?”

“You've been looking for the person who destroyed your marriage.”

Rachel stared at the approaching cars.

Emily continued:

“You're looking in the wrong direction.”

The call ended.

Rachel lowered the phone.

Daniel looked at her.

“Who was it?”

Rachel didn't answer.

Because on the far side of the room, Michael had just pulled a gun from beneath his coat.

May you like

And he wasn't pointing it at the people outside.

He was pointing it at Daniel.
