CHAPTER 13 — THE BENNETT FAMILY FALL

CHAPTER 13 — THE BENNETT FAMILY FALL

The hallway outside the hospital office had gone silent.

Rachel stood frozen.

Daniel stood beside her.

The nurse was still there, staring nervously between them.

And somewhere downstairs, a man claiming to be Rachel's dead father was waiting.

For twelve years, Rachel had believed her father was gone.

Now someone was telling her he was alive.

But Rachel had learned one thing.

In the Bennett family, nothing was ever exactly what it appeared to be.

She looked at Daniel.

“Take me to him.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Rachel—”

“Now.”

He nodded.

They took the elevator downstairs.

The doors opened.

Rachel stepped into the hospital lobby.

And stopped.

A man stood near the entrance.

Older.

Thinner.

His hair almost completely gray.

But his eyes—

Rachel knew those eyes.

She had seen them in photographs.

She had seen them in dreams.

She had seen them every night after his funeral.

The man looked at her.

His lips trembled.

“Rachel.”

She couldn't move.

“Dad?”

The man nodded.

Rachel covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

She wanted to run toward him.

She wanted to embrace him.

She wanted to scream.

Instead, she whispered:

“Prove it.”

The man looked wounded.

“You were six when you broke your arm climbing the old oak tree.”

Rachel froze.

“You were afraid of hospitals.”

She stared at him.

“You slept in my room for three nights afterward.”

Her breath caught.

“You called me your little bird.”

Rachel began crying.

Nobody had known that.

Not Daniel.

Not Richard.

Not Lauren.

Not even Margaret.

Only her father.

Rachel walked toward him.

Then stopped.

“What happened to you?”

His face hardened.

“I was forced to disappear.”

“By Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I found the accounts.”

Rachel stared.

“The money.”

He nodded.

“Your grandfather created a system that allowed the family trust to survive generations.”

“But Richard stole from it.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Her father looked at Daniel.

“Enough to destroy the entire family.”

Rachel turned.

Daniel looked away.

Her father continued.

“Richard didn't do it alone.”

Rachel's stomach tightened.

“Who helped him?”

Silence.

Then her father said:

“Lauren.”

Rachel's heart dropped.

Lauren arrived twenty minutes later.

She walked into the hospital lobby with Richard's lawyers behind her.

The moment she saw Rachel standing beside the man she believed dead, her face drained of color.

“Dad?”

Rachel looked at her.

“That's what you called him when you were younger?”

Lauren froze.

Her father looked at her.

“You knew.”

Lauren's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know you were alive.”

“You knew enough.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Stop.”

Rachel turned toward him.

“No.”

She looked at all three of them.

“No more stopping.”

She pulled out her phone.

“I've spent twelve years listening to all of you explain why I shouldn't ask questions.”

She held up the recorder.

“That's over.”

Richard's lawyer stepped forward.

“You should not release confidential family records.”

Rachel smiled.

“Watch me.”

She opened her laptop.

The first file appeared.

The recording from the vault.

Richard's voice filled the lobby.

“Make her hate him.”

People turned.

Nurses stopped.

Patients stared.

The lawyer went pale.

Rachel played another.

Richard:

“If she refuses to leave Daniel, make her.”

Then another.

Daniel:

“What if she finds out about Emily?”

Richard:

“She won't.”

The hospital lobby became silent.

Lauren looked at Daniel.

“You told me those recordings didn't exist.”

Daniel turned.

“I didn't know Rachel had them.”

Lauren stared at him.

“You lied to me.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You helped Richard.”

Lauren shook her head.

“I was protecting the family.”

Rachel laughed.

“That's what everyone says.”

She opened another file.

A bank transfer.

Lauren's name.

A signature.

Twenty million dollars.

Rachel turned toward her.

“What is this?”

Lauren's face went white.

“That isn't mine.”

“Your signature is on it.”

“It's forged.”

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“She authorized it.”

Lauren spun toward him.

“You told me to sign it!”

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“You were an adult.”

“You threatened me.”

“I gave you an opportunity.”

“You threatened my children.”

The lobby erupted into whispers.

Rachel watched them.

For the first time, she understood.

The family wasn't united.

They had never been united.

They had simply been afraid.

And now that fear was breaking.

Rachel opened another document.

This one contained access records from the hospital.

Daniel's name.

Lauren's name.

Richard's.

Eleanor's.

Emily's.

Dozens of transactions.

Dozens of meetings.

Years of manipulation.

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“You told me you were trying to protect me.”

“I was.”

“You also signed these.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“I didn't know what they were.”

Lauren laughed bitterly.

“You always say that.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“And you always knew.”

Lauren stared at him.

“You think I wanted this?”

“You helped him.”

“So did you.”

Daniel went silent.

Rachel watched them.

“Keep going.”

Lauren looked at her.

“What?”

“Tell me everything.”

Lauren shook her head.

“I can't.”

“You can.”

Richard interrupted.

“She knows nothing.”

Rachel turned.

“Then why are you so afraid of what she'll say?”

Richard's expression changed.

Rachel smiled.

“Exactly.”

She walked toward Lauren.

“What did you do?”

Lauren began crying.

“I moved the money.”

Rachel stopped.

Daniel stared at his sister.

“You?”

Lauren nodded.

“Richard ordered me to.”

“How much?”

“Forty-eight million.”

Rachel's face went pale.

“Where?”

“Offshore.”

“Which accounts?”

Lauren looked at Richard.

“He'll kill me.”

Rachel's voice became quiet.

“He can't.”

Lauren shook her head.

“You don't understand him.”

Rachel looked at the security cameras above them.

“He's being recorded.”

Richard glanced upward.

His face hardened.

Rachel smiled.

“Everything is.”

Lauren took a breath.

Then whispered:

“Cayman.”

Rachel's eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“The accounts are in Cayman.”

Richard stepped toward Lauren.

“You stupid woman.”

Lauren stepped backward.

“You promised you'd protect my children.”

“I did.”

“You said no one would find out.”

“I said I would handle it.”

Rachel stepped between them.

“No.”

She pointed at Richard.

“You're done handling anything.”

The investigators entered the lobby.

Two officers approached Richard.

“Mr. Bennett.”

Richard didn't move.

“You're coming with us.”

His lawyer stepped forward.

“On what grounds?”

The investigator held up a file.

“Financial fraud.”

Another file.

“Conspiracy.”

Another.

“Attempted murder.”

Richard laughed.

“You don't have enough.”

Rachel held up the recorder.

“We do.”

Richard looked at her.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

“You think you won?”

Rachel shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at the people gathered around them.

“I think you lost.”

Richard turned toward Daniel.

“You did this.”

Daniel stared at him.

“No.”

Richard's voice became furious.

“You were supposed to control her.”

Daniel replied:

“I was trying to save her.”

Richard laughed.

“You were always weak.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“You threatened her.”

“I threatened you.”

“You threatened my wife.”

“She was never your wife.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“She was.”

Richard smiled.

“Not anymore.”

Daniel froze.

Rachel looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Richard's smile widened.

“The divorce was finalized this morning.”

Silence.

Rachel's face went pale.

“What?”

Richard looked at Daniel.

“You signed it.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn't.”

Richard pulled out a document.

A judge's signature.

A court stamp.

Rachel stared.

The divorce decree.

Her name.

Daniel's name.

Final.

Richard said:

“You're no longer married.”

Rachel's heart sank.

Daniel looked horrified.

“I never signed that.”

Richard smiled.

“Someone did.”

Rachel stepped closer.

“Who?”

Richard looked at Lauren.

Lauren's face went white.

“No.”

Rachel turned.

“What did you do?”

Lauren began crying.

“I didn't know what it was.”

Richard laughed.

“You signed it.”

Lauren shook her head.

“You told me it was a trust amendment.”

Rachel stared at her.

“You signed my divorce.”

Lauren collapsed into a chair.

“I didn't know.”

Daniel looked furious.

“You destroyed my marriage.”

Lauren looked at him.

“You destroyed it years ago.”

Silence.

The sentence hit harder than a slap.

Rachel looked at Daniel.

He couldn't answer.

Because she was right.

The legal document was only the final piece.

The marriage had been destroyed long before.

The investigators took Richard away.

But he wasn't finished.

As he passed Rachel, he whispered:

“You think this is over?”

Rachel looked at him.

“Yes.”

Richard smiled.

“You haven't seen the final account.”

Rachel frowned.

“What account?”

Richard leaned closer.

“The one your father doesn't know about.”

Then he was gone.

Rachel looked at her father.

He had heard it too.

“What account?”

Her father looked disturbed.

“I don't know.”

Rachel turned toward Daniel.

He shook his head.

“I don't know either.”

Lauren suddenly stood.

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

Rachel stared at her.

“What?”

Lauren's hands were shaking.

“There was one account Richard never let me access.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“What did you know?”

Lauren swallowed.

“It was called the Rachel Account.”

Rachel froze.

“My name?”

“Yes.”

“What was it for?”

Lauren looked at Daniel.

Then at Rachel.

“Your death.”

Silence.

Rachel's heart stopped.

Her father stepped forward.

“What are you talking about?”

Lauren began crying.

“Richard created it after your wedding.”

“Why?”

“To collect the money after you died.”

Rachel stared.

“How much?”

Lauren whispered:

“One hundred million dollars.”

The lobby went silent.

Rachel felt cold.

A hundred million dollars.

Someone had built an entire financial structure around her death.

And then she remembered the insurance policy.

The fake divorce.

The staged affair.

The hospital records.

The surveillance.

Everything had been leading toward one event.

Her disappearance.

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“Did you know?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Lauren looked at him.

“You knew part of it.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

“You signed the insurance application.”

Rachel turned toward him.

Daniel looked horrified.

“I didn't know what it was.”

“You signed it.”

“I thought it was a business policy.”

Lauren laughed bitterly.

“You always thought that.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

“Neither did you.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You're blaming me?”

Lauren's voice rose.

“You think you're innocent?”

Rachel watched them.

Daniel and Lauren.

Brother and sister.

Both exposed.

Both frightened.

Both looking for someone else to blame.

Then Rachel noticed something.

Her father was staring at the documents.

His face had gone pale.

“Dad?”

He didn't answer.

“What's wrong?”

He pointed at one page.

“This isn't Richard's signature.”

Rachel looked.

The signature on the account authorization was unfamiliar.

“Whose is it?”

Her father whispered:

“I don't know.”

Rachel looked at Lauren.

“Who created the account?”

“I don't know.”

“Who authorized it?”

“I don't know.”

“Who has access?”

Lauren shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Rachel felt a chill.

Richard had not created the account.

He had only used it.

Someone else had built it.

Someone above him.

Rachel looked toward the hallway.

Emily stood there.

She had been listening.

Rachel called:

“Emily.”

Emily slowly approached.

Rachel held up the document.

“Do you recognize this signature?”

Emily looked at it.

Her face changed.

“Yes.”

Rachel's heart pounded.

“Whose is it?”

Emily whispered:

“My mother's.”

Rachel froze.

“Margaret?”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

She looked toward the entrance.

“Eleanor.”

Rachel's blood ran cold.

Eleanor.

The woman who had claimed she was controlling Richard.

The woman who had moved the money.

The woman who had disappeared.

The woman who had known about the second trust.

Rachel stared at Emily.

“Why would Eleanor create an account for my death?”

Emily's eyes filled with fear.

“Because she didn't want your money.”

Rachel frowned.

“Then what did she want?”

Emily looked at her.

“She wanted the trust itself.”

Rachel's heart pounded.

“What does that mean?”

Emily took a breath.

“The Bennett family trust isn't the real prize.”

Rachel stared.

“Then what is?”

Emily whispered:

“Control of the company that manages it.”

Rachel froze.

“Who owns the company?”

Emily looked toward the ceiling.

“The person who controls the trust administrator.”

Rachel understood.

“Eleanor.”

Emily nodded.

“She has been controlling the family fortune from the outside.”

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“And Richard?”

“Her puppet.”

“Lauren?”

“A pawn.”

Rachel's eyes narrowed.

“And you?”

Emily gave a sad smile.

“Another pawn.”

Rachel finally understood the entire family.

Nobody had been at the top.

Everyone had been a piece.

Richard had thought he was the king.

Daniel had thought he was protecting Rachel.

Lauren had thought she was protecting her children.

Emily had thought she was fighting for her inheritance.

But Eleanor had been moving all of them.

And somewhere above Eleanor was perhaps someone else.

Rachel looked at the evidence.

Then she looked at the cameras.

“Then let's expose her too.”

Emily shook her head.

“You can't.”

“Why?”

“Because Eleanor doesn't care about money anymore.”

Rachel frowned.

“What does she care about?”

Emily's voice dropped.

“Legacy.”

Rachel stared.

“What legacy?”

Emily looked toward the doors.

“Your father's.”

Rachel's heart stopped.

“What did my father leave behind?”

Emily whispered:

“A list.”

“What list?”

“The names of everyone involved.”

Rachel's eyes widened.

“And where is it?”

Emily looked at Daniel.

Daniel slowly reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Rachel stared.

“You had it?”

Daniel nodded.

“I found it the night you discovered the hospital records.”

Rachel took it.

The envelope was sealed.

On the front was written:

FOR RACHEL — WHEN THE BENNETT FAMILY FALLS.

Rachel opened it.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

A list of names.

Richard.

Lauren.

Daniel.

Eleanor.

Emily.

And one final name.

Rachel read it.

Her face went completely pale.

She looked at her father.

“Dad…”

He stepped closer.

“What?”

Rachel handed him the paper.

He read the final name.

His hands began shaking.

“No.”

Rachel whispered:

“Who is that?”

Her father looked at her.

“That person is dead.”

Rachel stared.

“Apparently not.”

Her father looked at the name again.

Then whispered:

“That's the man who ordered my murder.”

Rachel's blood ran cold.

Because the final name on the list was not Richard.

Not Eleanor.

Not Daniel.

It was the name of the person who had founded the Bennett empire.

The man everyone believed had died thirty years earlier.

Rachel's grandfather.

And beneath his name was one final sentence:

HE NEVER DIED.
