Chapter 10 — The Arrest

Chapter 10 — The Arrest
The message remained on every screen.
YOU CAN HAVE YOUR FORTUNE.
A second line appeared.
OR YOU CAN HAVE YOUR MOTHER.
Then the final sentence:
YOU CANNOT HAVE BOTH.
Mariana stared at the screens.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Daniel finally broke the silence.
"That's not possible."
Mariana turned toward him.
"What?"
"The building is isolated. Our network isn't connected to the public system."
"Then how did he get in?"
Daniel looked at the security monitors.
Every camera had gone black.
"Someone gave him access."
Mariana's expression hardened.
"Inside help."
A phone rang somewhere in the dark.
Not hers.
Daniel's.
He answered.
"Hello?"
His face changed.
He slowly looked at Mariana.
"It's the police."
The Police Arrive
Ten minutes later, the lobby filled with officers.
Mariana walked downstairs with Daniel beside her.
Andrew was already there.
He looked confused.
"What happened?"
Mariana ignored him.
A senior detective approached.
"Mrs. Escalante?"
"Yes."
"I'm Detective Harris."
He showed her his badge.
"We have a warrant for your arrest."
The lobby went silent.
Mariana stared at him.
"For what?"
"Financial fraud."
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
"On whose authority?"
The detective handed him a document.
"Federal."
Daniel read it.
His face went pale.
"These allegations are fabricated."
Detective Harris looked at Mariana.
"We're not here to debate them."
Andrew stepped forward.
"You can't arrest her."
The detective turned.
"And you are?"
Andrew hesitated.
"Her husband."
Mariana looked at him.
"Not anymore."
Andrew's face tightened.
The detective glanced between them.
"I don't care about your marital situation."
He turned back to Mariana.
"Please place your hands behind your back."
Daniel protested.
"You need to see the evidence."
"We will."
"Then you'll know this is a setup."
The detective didn't answer.
Mariana slowly raised her hands.
The handcuffs clicked around her wrists.
Cameras appeared outside the glass doors.
Reporters.
Dozens of them.
Mariana understood immediately.
This wasn't simply an arrest.
It was a performance.
Someone wanted the world to see her taken away.
Someone wanted her reputation destroyed before she could reveal the truth.
As the officers escorted her outside, a reporter shouted:
"Mrs. Escalante! Did you steal the Whitmore fortune?"
Another shouted:
"Did you manipulate the stock market?"
"Are you guilty?"
Mariana stopped.
She looked directly into the cameras.
Then smiled.
"No."
The officers pulled her toward the vehicle.
But Mariana added:
"Someone is afraid of what I'll find."
The reporters erupted.
The car door closed.
And the moment the vehicle drove away—
Andrew's phone rang.
The Evidence
Andrew answered.
"Hello?"
A distorted voice spoke.
"You have twenty-four hours."
"For what?"
"To convince Mariana to surrender the foundation."
Andrew's face hardened.
"Who are you?"
"You know."
"Blackwell."
Silence.
Andrew clenched his fist.
"What happens if I refuse?"
"You lose your mother."
Andrew froze.
"What?"
"Margaret."
The call ended.
Andrew immediately called the mansion.
No answer.
He called again.
Still nothing.
He grabbed his coat.
At the police station, Mariana sat alone in an interrogation room.
A detective placed a folder in front of her.
"You are accused of transferring billions of dollars through shell corporations."
Mariana opened the folder.
She laughed.
"These companies belong to my family."
The detective frowned.
"Not according to these documents."
Mariana studied them.
Then she noticed something.
The signatures were forged.
"Where did you get these?"
"From a financial institution."
"Which one?"
"We can't disclose that."
Mariana smiled.
"Then you're arresting me based on evidence you can't identify."
The detective leaned forward.
"You're in serious trouble."
"No."
Mariana looked directly at him.
"You are."
The door opened.
A man entered.
Her attorney.
Gabriel Hayes.
He placed a file on the table.
"Your arrest warrant is defective."
The detective frowned.
"What?"
"The signature authorizing the warrant was issued three hours after the alleged transaction."
He placed another document down.
"And this one was notarized by someone who died six months ago."
The detective stared.
Gabriel smiled.
"Your case is collapsing."
Margaret Disappears
At the Whitmore mansion, Andrew entered the library.
The room was empty.
"Mom?"
No answer.
He searched the house.
Bedroom.
Kitchen.
Basement.
Nothing.
Then he found the library safe open.
Inside was a photograph.
Margaret and Elena.
Twenty-eight years ago.
Andrew stared at it.
On the back was a message.
I never wanted this to happen.
Andrew's hands trembled.
Then he found something else.
A hotel key.
Room 314.
He immediately drove there.
Room 314
The hotel room was empty.
But the television was on.
A video played.
Margaret appeared on screen.
She looked terrified.
"Andrew."
He froze.
"If you're watching this, I've been taken."
Andrew's face changed.
"I don't know where I am."
Margaret continued.
"But you need to understand something."
She took a breath.
"Your father wasn't the mastermind."
Andrew stared.
"He was a pawn."
"Just like me."
She looked directly into the camera.
"The person controlling everything is someone we trusted."
Andrew whispered:
"Who?"
Margaret's face became pale.
"I can't say his name."
"Because if I do..."
She looked over her shoulder.
"...he will kill me."
The screen went black.
Andrew stood frozen.
Then another video appeared.
This time, it showed Mariana being arrested.
Andrew's expression hardened.
A message appeared beneath the footage.
SAVE YOUR WIFE.
Then:
BETRAY HER.
Andrew stared.
The choice was clear.
If he cooperated, Mariana would lose everything.
If he refused, Margaret could die.
The Release
At dawn, Mariana was released.
The forged documents had collapsed under investigation.
Gabriel met her outside.
"You're free."
Mariana looked at him.
"Who arranged the release?"
"The Escalante legal team."
"No."
She shook her head.
"Who really made the call?"
Gabriel hesitated.
"Andrew."
Mariana froze.
"Andrew?"
"He threatened to expose several government officials unless they released you."
Mariana's expression changed.
"Where is he?"
"We don't know."
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
Andrew's voice came through.
"Mariana."
"Where are you?"
"I need you to listen."
"What happened?"
"They have my mother."
Mariana closed her eyes.
"Who?"
"Blackwell."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Then find out."
"I will."
He paused.
"But there's something you need to know."
"What?"
"Your mother isn't the only person they're holding."
Mariana's heart stopped.
"Who else?"
Andrew's voice became quiet.
"Someone from your family."
The line went dead.
The Second Arrest
Three hours later, the police arrived at the Whitmore mansion again.
This time, they weren't looking for Mariana.
They were looking for Margaret.
But she was gone.
Detective Harris searched the library.
He found the old photograph.
Then the ledger.
And finally—
the hidden recording.
He listened.
His expression changed.
He immediately called his superior.
"We have a problem."
"What?"
"The Whitmore case isn't a financial crime."
"What is it?"
The detective looked at the evidence.
"Conspiracy."
"How high does it go?"
He stared at the names.
"Much higher than we thought."
Andrew's Choice
Andrew stood on a bridge overlooking the city.
His phone rang.
Alexander Blackwell.
"You have twelve hours."
"For what?"
"Bring Mariana to the old foundation."
Andrew's eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
"Because she has something I need."
"What?"
"The key."
Andrew looked at the city.
"And if I refuse?"
"You'll never see your mother again."
Andrew closed his eyes.
He thought about Mariana.
The woman he had slapped.
The woman he had humiliated.
The woman he had treated as if she were worthless.
He remembered her standing at the mansion door.
He remembered her words.
They all exist because of me.
For the first time, he understood.
She had never needed him.
He had needed her.
And now he had one chance to prove he wasn't the monster he had become.
"I'll bring her."
Alexander laughed.
"I knew you would."
The call ended.
Andrew immediately sent Mariana a message.
Meet me alone.
She replied:
Why?
He typed:
Because I finally know who betrayed your family.
Mariana stared at the message.
Then another appeared.
And it's not my mother.
The Hidden Prison
Far from the city, Margaret opened her eyes.
She was in a dark room.
Her hands were tied.
Across from her sat Elena.
Margaret stared at her.
Tears filled her eyes.
"You're alive."
Elena nodded.
"For twenty-eight years."
Margaret whispered:
"Why didn't you come back?"
"Because I was protecting Mariana."
"I thought you were dead."
"I wanted you to think that."
Margaret looked down.
"I betrayed you."
"Yes."
"I was young."
"So was I."
"I was afraid."
"So was I."
Margaret looked at her.
"Can you forgive me?"
Elena was silent.
Then she said:
"That's not my decision anymore."
Margaret frowned.
"Whose is it?"
Elena looked toward the door.
"Mariana's."
The door opened.
A man stepped inside.
Alexander Blackwell.
He smiled.
"How touching."
Elena's expression hardened.
"What do you want?"
Alexander looked at Margaret.
"She knows."
Margaret shook her head.
"I won't tell you."
Alexander smiled.
"You already did."
Margaret froze.
He placed a recording device on the table.
Her own voice played.
The foundation belongs to Mariana.
Alexander stopped the recording.
"Thank you."
Margaret's face went white.
"You tricked me."
"No."
He smiled.
"You volunteered."
The Final Move
At midnight, Mariana arrived at the old Escalante Foundation.
Andrew was waiting.
She stepped from the vehicle.
"You said you knew who betrayed my family."
Andrew nodded.
"I do."
"Who?"
He looked at her.
"Someone who has been manipulating all of us."
Mariana waited.
Andrew took a breath.
"Your father."
Silence.
Mariana's expression changed.
"What?"
Andrew continued.
"Victor Escalante."
Mariana stared at him.
"You're lying."
"I wish I were."
He handed her a file.
Inside were bank transfers.
Payments.
Secret agreements.
And Victor's signature.
Mariana's hands trembled.
"No."
Andrew stepped closer.
"Your father wasn't protecting you."
"He was protecting the fortune."
Mariana looked at the documents.
Then the lights around the foundation suddenly turned on.
Hundreds of them.
Floodlights.
A voice echoed through the building.
"Finally."
Mariana turned.
Alexander Blackwell stepped from the shadows.
Behind him stood armed security.
And beside him—
Margaret.
And Elena.
Alive.
Mariana's breath caught.
"Mom."
Elena looked at her daughter.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Mariana."
Alexander smiled.
"Welcome home."
Mariana stared at him.
"You wanted the foundation."
"No."
He looked at her.
"I wanted you to come willingly."
Mariana's eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
Alexander smiled.
"Because the foundation doesn't recognize blood."
He took one step forward.
"It recognizes choice."
Mariana looked at Elena.
Then at Margaret.
Then at Andrew.
And finally at the documents accusing her father.
For the first time, she realized the arrest had never been about putting her in prison.
It had been designed to push her toward this exact moment.
To make her desperate.
To make her choose.
Alexander extended his hand.
"Give me the key."
Mariana slowly reached into her coat.
Her fingers touched the emerald necklace.
Then she smiled.
"You're too late."
Alexander's smile disappeared.
Mariana lifted her chin.
"I already activated the foundation."
Silence.
"And you know what happens next?"
She looked directly at him.
"Every secret you've buried for twenty-eight years becomes public."
Alexander's face darkened.
Then—
the entire building shook.
Outside, sirens screamed.
Hundreds of police vehicles surrounded the foundation.
Helicopters appeared overhead.
Alexander turned toward the windows.
"What did you do?"
Mariana smiled.
"I arrested you."
Alexander stared at her.
"You can't arrest me."
Mariana looked at Detective Harris as he entered the building.
"Maybe not."
She glanced at the handcuffs in his hand.
"But he can."
The detective walked toward Alexander.
"Alexander Blackwell."
He raised the cuffs.
"You are under arrest."
Alexander looked at Mariana.
For the first time—
he looked afraid.
But Mariana knew this wasn't the end.
Because as the officers led Alexander away, Elena whispered something into her daughter's ear.
"There's something you still don't know."
Mariana turned.
"What?"
Elena looked toward Victor's photograph in the file.
Her expression was filled with pain.
"Your father didn't betray us."
Mariana froze.
"Then who did?"
Elena stared into her daughter's eyes.
And whispered:
"The person who betrayed us..."
"...was the person who raised you."
Mariana's blood ran cold.
Because suddenly—
she understood.
May you like
The biggest secret hadn't been uncovered.
It had only been opened.
