Chapter 8 — The Recording

Chapter 8 — The Recording

The elevator doors closed.

Mariana stood alone inside the steel-walled cabin, staring at the photograph in her hand.

Her mother.

Alive.

Twenty-eight years after everyone had told her she was gone.

For several seconds, Mariana couldn't breathe.

She had spent half her life mourning a woman whose death had never been confirmed.

Her father had never shown her a grave.

Never given her a final letter.

Never told her where her mother had disappeared.

Whenever Mariana asked, Victor had simply said:

"Some things are better left in the past."

Now she understood.

The past had never left.

It had been waiting.

The elevator reached the executive floor.

The doors opened.

Daniel was waiting.

He immediately noticed her expression.

"What happened?"

Mariana handed him the photograph.

Daniel stared.

His face went completely still.

"That's..."

"My mother."

He looked at her.

"Are you sure?"

"I'd recognize her anywhere."

Daniel turned the photograph over.

He read the words on the back.

She has been waiting for you.

His jaw tightened.

"Who gave you this?"

"Andrew."

Daniel looked surprised.

"Andrew?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"He says my mother is alive."

Daniel stared at the photograph again.

"We need to verify it."

"I know."

"And we need to assume this could be a trap."

"I know."

Mariana walked into her office.

She placed the photograph on the desk.

Then she noticed something she hadn't seen before.

There was a tiny reflection in the window behind her mother.

A sign.

Three letters.

V.R.C.

Daniel leaned over her shoulder.

"What is that?"

Mariana shook her head.

"I don't know."

She zoomed in.

The photograph had clearly been taken from a distance.

Behind her mother stood a building.

Above the entrance was a faded sign.

VALERIAN RESEARCH CENTER.

Daniel immediately opened his laptop.

"Give me a minute."

He searched.

Then frowned.

"There's no current company by that name."

"Was there?"

"Twenty-eight years ago."

He paused.

"Yes."

Mariana's eyes narrowed.

"Where?"

Daniel looked up.

"Three hundred miles north."

"Who owned it?"

He hesitated.

"Blackwell Capital."

The room went silent.

The Recording Begins

At 2:00 p.m., Mariana gathered everyone she trusted into the secure conference room.

Victor joined through a private video connection.

Daniel placed the old videotape on the table.

"We have two recordings."

"The first one was found at the warehouse."

"The second came from Andrew."

Mariana nodded.

"Play both."

The screen lit up.

Elena appeared.

Her hair was longer than in the first recording.

Her face was pale.

She looked exhausted.

But she was alive.

Mariana stared at the screen.

Her mother looked directly into the camera.

"Mariana."

The sound of her name nearly broke her.

"If you're seeing this, then you are old enough to hear what happened."

Elena took a breath.

"I don't know whether I'll still be alive when you watch this."

Mariana's fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

"I want you to understand something before I tell you anything else."

Elena smiled faintly.

"None of this was your fault."

Mariana closed her eyes.

Her mother continued.

"Your father loved you."

"Never doubt that."

"He made mistakes."

"So did I."

"But everything we did was to keep you safe."

The recording flickered.

Then Elena said:

"Twenty-eight years ago, the Escalante family was preparing to expand internationally."

"Our company was worth billions."

"Blackwell Capital wanted control."

"They approached us with an offer."

"We refused."

Elena looked down.

"That was our first mistake."

The screen distorted.

When it stabilized, Elena was crying.

"They didn't try to buy us again."

"They tried to destroy us."

"They bribed investors."

"They sabotaged contracts."

"They leaked false financial information."

"And then they came to Richard Whitmore."

Mariana opened her eyes.

Elena continued.

"Richard was desperate."

"He owed us money."

"He believed Blackwell could save him."

"So he accepted their offer."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What offer?"

Elena answered as though she could hear him.

"Richard agreed to steal certain Escalante assets."

"Assets Blackwell could not legally obtain."

"Among them was the emerald necklace."

Mariana looked at the necklace lying beside the laptop.

Elena continued.

"But Richard didn't know the necklace contained something far more valuable than emeralds."

Mariana frowned.

"What?"

The recording suddenly distorted.

Static filled the room.

Then Elena's voice returned.

"A key."

Mariana froze.

"A key to what?"

Elena looked toward the camera.

"The Escalante Foundation."

Daniel looked at Mariana.

Mariana stared at the screen.

The Escalante Foundation had always been described as a charitable organization.

Nothing more.

Elena continued.

"Your grandmother created a private foundation beneath the public one."

"It controlled assets that were never listed on any balance sheet."

"Assets protected from hostile takeover."

"Assets worth more than the Whitmore empire ever was."

Mariana's heartbeat quickened.

"So that's why Blackwell wanted the necklace."

"Yes."

Elena nodded.

"But they never got what they wanted."

"Because I discovered the truth."

The Betrayal

The recording changed.

Elena appeared in a different room.

Someone was standing behind her.

A young woman.

Mariana stared.

"Elena's sister," Daniel whispered.

Mariana nodded.

Her aunt.

The woman she had never known.

Elena looked toward her.

"She believed Blackwell could make us stronger."

"She thought your father was holding the family back."

"She betrayed us."

Mariana's eyes widened.

"But she wasn't alone."

Elena looked directly into the camera.

"Margaret helped her."

Mariana went still.

Victor appeared on the video call.

He whispered:

"I knew it."

Mariana turned toward him.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"But you never told me."

"I had no proof."

Elena continued.

"Margaret gave Blackwell access to our financial records."

"She provided private information about our investments."

"And she helped arrange the theft."

Mariana's expression hardened.

"But why?"

Elena's face became bitter.

"Because Margaret wanted to become powerful."

"She believed Richard would make her queen of the Whitmore empire."

"But Blackwell never intended to let the Whitmores keep anything."

The recording paused.

Then Elena said:

"Margaret was a pawn."

Mariana stared at the screen.

"Just like Andrew."

The Hidden Account

Elena reached toward something off-camera.

She returned holding a small black book.

"This is the ledger."

Mariana leaned closer.

"Every payment."

"Every betrayal."

"Every person involved."

Elena placed it on the table.

"I hid it before they could find it."

She looked directly into the camera.

"The account number written on the last page belongs to the person who ordered everything."

Mariana's breath caught.

"Who?"

Elena opened the ledger.

The recording became distorted again.

Static.

The image broke apart.

Then Elena's voice came through.

"His name is..."

The screen went black.

Mariana slammed her hand against the table.

"No!"

Daniel checked the equipment.

"The file is damaged."

"Can you recover it?"

"I'm trying."

Victor spoke through the screen.

"Mariana."

She turned.

Her father's face had gone pale.

"Your mother never told me about the recording."

"You knew she was alive."

Victor hesitated.

"I knew she might be."

"That's not an answer."

"I received one message from her."

"When?"

"Twenty-seven years ago."

Mariana stared.

"What did it say?"

Victor swallowed.

"Don't look for me."

"Why?"

"She said if I found her, they would find you."

Mariana's voice broke.

"So you let her disappear?"

"I thought I was protecting you."

"You let me believe she was dead."

"I was afraid."

Mariana turned away.

For the first time, she saw the truth.

Her father hadn't been hiding the past because he didn't trust her.

He had been terrified of it.

The Missing Thirty Seconds

At 6:00 p.m., Daniel finally recovered part of the damaged recording.

"There."

Mariana rushed over.

The video resumed.

Elena was still sitting at the table.

But something was different.

The camera had been moved.

Someone had entered the room.

A man's voice could be heard.

"Give me the ledger."

Elena looked toward him.

"No."

"You don't understand."

"I understand perfectly."

"You will destroy everyone."

"No."

Elena's voice became cold.

"You will destroy yourself."

The man stepped into frame.

His face was partially hidden.

Mariana leaned closer.

Daniel paused the video.

"Can you enhance it?"

"Possibly."

The image sharpened.

Mariana stared.

The man's face became clearer.

She recognized him.

Her blood turned cold.

"No."

Daniel looked at her.

"Who is it?"

Mariana couldn't answer.

Victor's voice came through the speakers.

"Mariana?"

She pointed at the screen.

The man was young.

But unmistakable.

It was Richard Whitmore.

Andrew's father.

But the recording was dated three months before the necklace was supposedly stolen.

Mariana stared.

Richard was saying something.

Daniel resumed the recording.

Richard looked at Elena.

"You have until tomorrow."

Elena laughed.

"You think I'm afraid of you?"

"No."

Richard stepped closer.

"I think you're afraid for your daughter."

Elena's face changed.

Richard smiled.

"That's why you'll cooperate."

Mariana's blood ran cold.

Then Elena whispered:

"Leave my daughter out of this."

Richard answered:

"Then give me the ledger."

The screen went black.

Andrew Arrives

At 8:30 p.m., Andrew appeared at headquarters again.

Security attempted to stop him.

Mariana instructed them to let him in.

He entered the conference room.

He looked at the screen.

"Did you watch it?"

"Yes."

Andrew stared at the frozen image of his father.

"What did he do?"

"Your father threatened my mother."

Andrew closed his eyes.

"I knew he was corrupt."

"But you didn't know this."

"No."

Mariana turned toward him.

"Why did you help me?"

Andrew looked at her.

"Because I found something else."

He placed another envelope on the table.

Mariana opened it.

Inside were financial records.

"What's this?"

"My father's private account."

She read the name.

Then stopped.

The account wasn't in Richard Whitmore's name.

It was under a company.

Aurelia Holdings.

Mariana looked up.

"Who owns it?"

Andrew shook his head.

"I don't know."

"Where did you find it?"

"In my father's safe."

"Why didn't he tell anyone?"

"Because it was his insurance policy."

"Against whom?"

Andrew looked at her.

"Against Blackwell."

Mariana's eyes narrowed.

"Your father betrayed Blackwell?"

"No."

Andrew took a breath.

"I think he betrayed everyone."

The Trap

At 11:00 p.m., Mariana received another message.

You found the recording.

She stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

Now find the missing thirty seconds.

Then another.

Your mother left them for you.

Mariana immediately called Daniel.

"Trace the number."

"I'm trying."

A fourth message arrived.

Don't trust Andrew.

Mariana looked across the room.

Andrew was standing near the window.

He hadn't moved.

He slowly turned.

"What's wrong?"

Mariana held up her phone.

Andrew read the message.

His expression changed.

"I didn't send that."

"I know."

"Do you?"

Mariana stared at him.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

No one spoke.

She waited.

Finally, a woman's voice whispered:

"Mariana?"

Her heart stopped.

She knew that voice.

She had heard it only in dreams.

"Mom?"

Silence.

Then:

"Don't trust anyone."

The call ended.

Mariana stood frozen.

Andrew looked at her.

"Who was it?"

Mariana whispered:

"My mother."

The Woman in the Dark

The call had lasted only eleven seconds.

Daniel traced it.

The result was impossible.

"It came from a satellite relay."

Mariana frowned.

"Can you locate it?"

"No."

"Try again."

"I already did."

She stared at the photograph.

Her mother was alive.

There was no longer any doubt.

But why had she called now?

And why had she warned Mariana not to trust anyone?

Then Mariana noticed something.

The old recording.

The emerald necklace.

The photograph.

The key.

They all contained the same symbol.

E.

She suddenly understood.

"E doesn't stand for Elena."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

Mariana turned toward him.

"It stands for Escalante."

She grabbed the necklace.

"There's a hidden compartment."

Daniel stared.

"Inside the necklace?"

Mariana examined the setting.

The emerald twisted slightly.

A tiny click sounded.

The center stone moved.

Beneath it was a miniature metal cylinder.

Mariana pulled it out.

Inside was a strip of paper.

Only four words were written.

THE FOUNDATION IS YOURS.

Mariana stared.

Daniel whispered:

"What foundation?"

Mariana remembered Elena's recording.

The private foundation.

The hidden assets.

The account.

The ledger.

She suddenly understood why Blackwell had spent twenty-eight years hunting the necklace.

It wasn't jewelry.

It was a key.

And the real fortune had never belonged to Andrew.

It had never belonged to Richard.

It had never belonged to the Whitmores.

It had been waiting for Mariana all along.

The Final Message

At midnight, another file appeared on Mariana's computer.

No one had sent it.

No email.

No notification.

It simply appeared.

ELENA_FINAL_MESSAGE

Mariana clicked it.

The screen flickered.

Her mother appeared again.

This time, she was smiling.

Not frightened.

Not exhausted.

Calm.

"Mariana."

Mariana's eyes filled with tears.

"If you're watching this, then you've discovered the foundation."

She paused.

"Good."

"You need to know something."

"The fortune your father believes he lost..."

"The fortune the Whitmores believe they built..."

"The empire Blackwell tried to steal..."

"None of it is the real inheritance."

Mariana leaned closer.

Elena continued:

"The real inheritance is control."

"The Escalante Foundation controls assets that cannot be seized through ordinary courts."

"Those assets were created to protect our family."

"But there is one condition."

Mariana held her breath.

"Only a direct heir can activate them."

Elena smiled.

"And that heir is you."

The screen went black.

Mariana stared at it.

Daniel slowly said:

"So everything we've been fighting over..."

Mariana looked at the emerald necklace.

"The mansion."

"The company."

"The money."

"The Whitmore fortune."

She shook her head.

"Those were distractions."

She turned toward the dark window.

"Someone wanted me to fight for the wrong treasure."

Daniel asked:

"Then what are you going to do?"

Mariana's expression changed.

For the first time since Andrew had slapped her, she smiled.

Not the cold smile from the night she left the mansion.

Something stronger.

Something almost fearless.

"I'm going to find my mother."

She picked up the brass key.

"And then..."

She looked at the photograph of Elena.

"...I'm going to find out who ordered her disappearance."

Outside, thunder rolled across the city.

And somewhere far away, a woman watched Mariana's office through a hidden camera.

Elena Escalante lowered her head.

She had waited twenty-eight years.

Now her daughter was finally close.

But there was one thing Mariana still didn't know.

The person who had betrayed her family wasn't dead.

Wasn't missing.

Wasn't hiding overseas.

May you like

He had been watching Mariana for years.

And he was already inside her empire.
