Chapter 7 — Andrew's Last Weapon

Chapter 7 — Andrew's Last Weapon
The warehouse went completely dark.
Mariana didn't move.
Neither did Daniel.
Somewhere beyond the sealed doors, footsteps echoed across the concrete floor.
Slow.
Measured.
Unhurried.
The voice came again.
"You're looking in the wrong family."
Mariana's fingers tightened around the old videotape.
She knew that voice.
She had heard it for years.
At charity dinners.
At family meetings.
At Christmas gatherings.
In the mansion she had once called home.
"Andrew?"
Silence.
Then a match struck.
A tiny flame appeared in the darkness.
Andrew stepped into view.
His face was half-covered in shadow.
Daniel immediately moved in front of Mariana.
Andrew raised both hands.
"I'm not here to hurt her."
Mariana's eyes hardened.
"Then why are you here?"
Andrew looked at the files scattered across the table.
"Because I finally found out what my family did."
"You followed me."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I knew you would come here."
Mariana laughed bitterly.
"You knew?"
"I found the key."
"Where?"
"My mother."
Mariana stared at him.
"So Margaret sent you."
"No."
Andrew's voice was exhausted.
"She doesn't know I'm here."
Mariana studied him.
"Then what do you want?"
Andrew looked at the blank screen.
"The same thing you want."
"The truth?"
"Yes."
Mariana shook her head.
"You've had four years to tell me the truth."
"I didn't know it."
"You knew enough to hit me."
Andrew flinched.
The words struck harder than any slap.
"I know."
Mariana stepped closer.
"You knew enough to call me a thief."
"I know."
"You knew enough to humiliate me in front of everyone."
"I know."
"And now that you're losing everything, you suddenly want the truth?"
Andrew looked at her.
"No."
He swallowed.
"I want you to survive it."
Mariana frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Andrew reached inside his coat.
Daniel immediately raised his hand.
"Don't."
Andrew slowly pulled out a flash drive.
He placed it on the table.
"This is why I came."
Mariana stared at it.
"What's on it?"
"The rest of your mother's recording."
Her expression changed.
"What?"
Andrew nodded.
"My father kept a copy."
The Man Who Had Always Been Behind Her
They returned to the Escalante headquarters before dawn.
The security team locked down the building.
No phones.
No outside connections.
No visitors.
Mariana sat in the private conference room.
Andrew sat across from her.
For the first time in four years, they were alone without pretending to be a married couple.
Daniel connected the flash drive.
A single encrypted file appeared.
ELENA_ESCALANTE_FINAL
Mariana's heart pounded.
Daniel looked at her.
"Ready?"
"No."
He pressed play.
The screen flickered.
Elena appeared again.
This time, she was sitting in a different room.
Her face looked frightened.
She kept looking over her shoulder.
"If you're watching this," she said, "then something has happened to me."
Mariana's throat tightened.
Elena continued.
"Mariana, you were too young to understand what was happening."
She paused.
"Your mother believed she could fix everything."
The video shook.
"She was wrong."
Andrew leaned forward.
Elena's voice became quieter.
"The Whitmores were never the real enemy."
Mariana looked at Andrew.
He stared at the screen.
"Your family was being used."
"By whom?" Mariana whispered.
Elena continued.
"There was another investor."
A name appeared on the screen.
BLACKWELL CAPITAL.
Daniel's eyes widened.
"Blackwell."
Mariana looked at him.
"You know them?"
"They were one of the largest private investment groups in the country."
"Past tense?"
Daniel nodded.
"They disappeared from the market twenty-five years ago."
The recording continued.
"Blackwell wanted control of the Escalante empire."
Elena looked directly into the camera.
"They couldn't buy it."
"So they tried to destroy it."
Mariana's breathing became shallow.
"Richard Whitmore was offered money."
"Margaret was offered protection."
"And someone inside our own family gave them access."
The screen froze.
Mariana whispered:
"Who?"
Then the recording resumed.
Elena said:
"The person who betrayed us was..."
The screen went black.
Daniel cursed under his breath.
"Another interruption."
Mariana stared at Andrew.
"Why did you have this?"
Andrew looked away.
"My father left it behind."
"Why didn't you show me before?"
"Because I didn't know it existed until yesterday."
"How?"
"After the company accounts were frozen, I went through his old office."
Andrew pulled out another document.
"I found this."
Mariana opened it.
It was an old handwritten ledger.
The final page contained a list of payments.
Several names had been blacked out.
But one remained visible.
MARGARET WHITMORE.
Mariana's eyes narrowed.
"Your mother was paid."
Andrew nodded.
"I know."
"How much?"
"Twenty million."
Mariana looked at him.
"And you still defend her?"
Andrew's jaw tightened.
"No."
For the first time, his voice sounded completely empty.
"I don't."
Andrew's Last Weapon
The next morning, Andrew held a press conference.
Mariana watched it from her office.
Reporters filled the room.
Cameras flashed.
Andrew stepped behind the podium.
"I owe the public an explanation."
The room went silent.
"I also owe my wife an apology."
Mariana stared at the screen.
Andrew continued.
"I accused Mariana Escalante of stealing a family heirloom."
He paused.
"She was innocent."
A wave of murmurs swept through the room.
Andrew lowered his head.
"I publicly humiliated her."
Another pause.
"And I struck her."
The room erupted.
Reporters shouted questions.
Andrew waited.
Then said:
"There is no excuse for what I did."
Mariana's expression remained cold.
Andrew continued.
"But the necklace was part of a much larger deception."
He held up a folder.
"The Whitmore family has concealed financial records dating back twenty-eight years."
The reporters became frantic.
"My father participated in illegal asset transfers involving the Escalante family."
Gasps.
"My mother knew."
Mariana watched Daniel.
He looked stunned.
Andrew continued.
"And I benefited from the wealth created by those actions."
A reporter shouted:
"Are you admitting criminal wrongdoing?"
Andrew looked directly into the cameras.
"Yes."
Mariana stood.
Daniel turned.
"What are you doing?"
"Ending this."
She walked out.
By noon, Andrew's confession had spread across every major news network.
Whitmore Global's stock collapsed.
Banks began demanding explanations.
Investors panicked.
Board members resigned.
And the Whitmore name became a national scandal.
Margaret watched the coverage from the mansion.
Her face was white.
Andrew's words played again.
My mother knew.
She threw the remote at the television.
"Traitor!"
A servant froze in the doorway.
Margaret pointed toward the screen.
"Turn it off!"
The servant obeyed.
Margaret sank into a chair.
She had spent decades protecting the Whitmore name.
And her own son had destroyed it in fifteen minutes.
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
"Hello?"
A man's voice said:
"You've lost control."
Margaret's breathing stopped.
"Who is this?"
"You know."
"I don't."
The man laughed.
"You always were a terrible liar."
Margaret stood.
"What do you want?"
"What I've always wanted."
"Money?"
"No."
"What then?"
"Mariana."
Margaret froze.
"You leave her alone."
The man laughed again.
"You don't get to give orders anymore."
The call ended.
Margaret stared at the phone.
Then she whispered:
"He's back."
The Man Behind Blackwell
That evening, Daniel brought Mariana another file.
"We found the owner of Blackwell Capital."
Mariana looked up.
"Who?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Leonard Blackwell."
She frowned.
"I've heard the name."
"He disappeared twenty-five years ago."
"Disappeared?"
"Officially."
"What does that mean?"
Daniel placed a photograph on the desk.
A young man stood beside Richard Whitmore.
Mariana recognized him.
Not from history.
From yesterday.
Her blood turned cold.
"This isn't Leonard Blackwell."
"No."
Daniel nodded.
"It's his son."
Mariana stared at the photograph.
"Who?"
"Alexander Blackwell."
She searched her memory.
The name meant nothing.
Daniel continued.
"He inherited the Blackwell network."
"Is he alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
Daniel's face hardened.
"That's the problem."
Mariana looked at him.
"We don't know."
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
"Mariana Escalante."
A man's voice replied.
"Finally."
She recognized the tone.
Calm.
Confident.
Almost amused.
"Who are you?"
"You already know."
"Alexander?"
Silence.
Then a soft laugh.
"Your mother always said you were intelligent."
Mariana's blood ran cold.
"You knew my mother?"
"I knew both of your parents."
"What do you want?"
"Your empire."
Mariana smiled coldly.
"You tried that twenty-eight years ago."
"And failed."
"You're failing again."
"No."
His voice became quieter.
"I'm finishing what I started."
The line disconnected.
Mariana stared at the phone.
Daniel asked:
"Who was it?"
"Alexander Blackwell."
Daniel's face changed.
"What did he say?"
"That he wants my empire."
Daniel frowned.
"That's impossible."
Mariana looked toward the window.
"No."
She shook her head.
"It's not."
Margaret's Final Secret
That night, Margaret opened a hidden safe beneath the library floor.
She removed a small envelope.
Inside was an old passport.
A photograph.
And a letter.
The photograph showed Elena Escalante.
But beside Elena stood another man.
Alexander Blackwell.
Young.
Smiling.
Margaret stared at the photograph.
Then she whispered:
"You should have stayed dead."
Behind her—
the library door opened.
Margaret turned.
No one was there.
She looked down.
The letter in her hand was gone.
Her face became pale.
Then she heard a voice behind her.
"You kept it for twenty-eight years."
Margaret slowly turned.
A man stood in the shadows.
Alexander Blackwell.
Older now.
But unmistakable.
Margaret stepped backward.
"You."
Alexander smiled.
"Hello, Margaret."
"You can't be here."
"And yet..."
He stepped into the light.
"...here I am."
Margaret's voice trembled.
"Why?"
"You know why."
"I did everything you asked."
"Not everything."
"I protected your secret."
"You protected yourself."
Margaret shook her head.
"You promised no one would get hurt."
Alexander's expression changed.
"I never made that promise."
Margaret's eyes widened.
"You killed Elena."
"No."
He smiled.
"Your husband did."
Margaret stared at him.
"What?"
"Richard believed Elena was going to expose us."
Alexander stepped closer.
"So he solved the problem."
Margaret's legs weakened.
"You're lying."
"Am I?"
He placed a photograph on the table.
Margaret looked at it.
Elena.
Alive.
Standing beside a car.
Then another photograph.
The same car.
Burned.
Margaret covered her mouth.
"No."
Alexander leaned closer.
"Your husband didn't kill her."
Margaret looked up.
"Then who?"
Alexander smiled.
"You did."
Margaret froze.
"What?"
"You gave Richard the location."
Her face collapsed.
"I didn't know."
"You knew enough."
Margaret shook her head.
"No."
Alexander turned toward the door.
"Now Mariana knows."
He stopped.
"And when she discovers who her mother's real betrayer was..."
He looked back.
"...she will come for you."
The door closed.
Margaret stood alone.
For the first time in thirty years—
she realized she had been nothing more than a pawn.
The Last Weapon
The next morning, Andrew appeared at Mariana's headquarters.
She refused to see him.
He waited.
One hour.
Two.
Three.
Finally, Mariana walked into the lobby.
"What do you want?"
Andrew looked exhausted.
"I found something."
"I've heard that before."
"This is different."
He handed her a sealed envelope.
"Don't open it here."
"Why?"
"Because if you open it, you won't be able to pretend anymore."
Mariana took it.
"What is it?"
"The truth about the night your mother disappeared."
Her fingers froze.
"You said she disappeared."
"I was wrong."
Mariana looked at him.
Andrew's eyes were full of fear.
"She wasn't killed."
Mariana's heart stopped.
"What?"
"She's alive."
Silence.
"That's impossible."
"I saw proof."
"Where?"
"I can't tell you."
"Andrew."
He stepped closer.
"My last weapon isn't money."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"It's the truth."
Mariana opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
An older woman stood on a balcony overlooking the ocean.
Her face was turned toward the camera.
Mariana knew that face.
Even after twenty-eight years.
Even after everything.
It was her mother.
On the back of the photograph were six words:
She has been waiting for you.
Mariana's hands began to shake.
She looked at Andrew.
"Where is she?"
Andrew swallowed.
"Somewhere Alexander Blackwell can never find her."
Mariana stared at the photograph.
For four years, she had believed she had lost everything.
Her marriage.
Her home.
Her family.
Her trust.
But now the greatest secret of her life had surfaced.
Her mother might still be alive.
And somewhere beyond the lies, the stolen fortune, the emerald necklace, and the ruined Whitmore empire—
someone had been waiting twenty-eight years for Mariana to come looking.
Mariana folded the photograph carefully.
Then she looked at Andrew.
"If you're lying..."
"I know."
"I will destroy you."
"I know."
"And if you're telling the truth..."
Andrew's face hardened.
"Then we both know what comes next."
Mariana turned toward the elevator.
"What?"
Andrew watched her disappear behind the closing doors.
May you like
His answer came too late.
"War."
