CHAPTER 11 – The Last Weapon

CHAPTER 11 – The Last Weapon
The name on the document changed everything.
Victoria Laurent.
For years, Mariana believed Victoria was one of the few people who truly understood her.
A person who knew the pressure of carrying a powerful family name.
A person who knew the loneliness of being surrounded by people who wanted something from you.
A person who appeared whenever Mariana needed answers.
But now...
Mariana discovered the most painful possibility.
Victoria had never been a friend.
She had been watching.
Waiting.
Preparing.
The old contract sat on the table between them.
The agreement that connected the Escalante and Whitmore families.
The agreement that existed long before Mariana and Andrew ever met.
The agreement that explained why their lives had crossed.
But one question remained.
Why?
Andrew stared at the document.
"I don't understand."
His voice was almost a whisper.
"Why would our fathers make an agreement like this?"
Mariana didn't answer.
Because she was asking the same question.
Daniel carefully examined the papers.
"There are missing pages."
Andrew looked at him.
"Missing?"
"Yes."
"The important sections were removed."
Mariana's eyes narrowed.
"Someone wanted us to find the document..."
"But not the entire truth."
That was when she understood.
This wasn't a discovery.
It was a message.
Someone wanted her to know enough to be afraid.
But not enough to fight back.
The security system suddenly activated.
Everyone turned.
Daniel checked his tablet.
"Someone accessed the old archives."
Mariana stood.
"Who?"
A few seconds passed.
Then the answer appeared.
A name.
Victoria Laurent.
Andrew looked at Mariana.
"She was here?"
"No."
Mariana walked toward the security screen.
"She wanted us to know she could be."
The screen showed Victoria entering the old Escalante estate two hours earlier.
She didn't steal anything.
She didn't hide.
She simply walked through the building.
Like someone who belonged there.
Andrew watched the footage.
"She knew the security codes."
Mariana's expression darkened.
"Only family members had those codes."
Silence.
For the first time...
Andrew saw the same fear in Mariana's eyes that he had felt.
Not fear of losing money.
Not fear of losing power.
Fear of betrayal.
"Who is she?"
Andrew asked.
Mariana looked at him.
"I thought I knew."
Years earlier...
Victoria Laurent had entered Mariana's life during university.
At the time, Mariana was not the heir everyone knew today.
She was simply a young woman trying to escape expectations.
Victoria was different.
Confident.
Charming.
Fearless.
She was the first person who treated Mariana like a normal person.
Not an Escalante.
Not a fortune.
Just Mariana.
When Mariana struggled with her family's expectations, Victoria listened.
When Mariana questioned whether anyone could love her without knowing her name, Victoria supported her.
When Mariana decided to hide her identity before marrying Andrew...
Victoria was the only person who knew.
And that was the part that hurt.
Because Victoria knew everything.
"She knew who I was."
Andrew looked at her.
"You told her?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Mariana looked down.
"Because I trusted her."
The words felt heavy.
Because they were the same words her father had warned her about.
Trust carefully.
Meanwhile...
Victoria sat inside a private office overlooking the city.
Across from her was Adrian Vale.
The man who had selected Andrew.
The man who had manipulated the beginning of the marriage.
"You found out she knows."
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
Victoria smiled.
"Good."
Adrian looked at her.
"You wanted this."
"I wanted her to stop believing lies."
"You mean you wanted her angry."
Victoria didn't deny it.
Adrian leaned back.
"Do you know what happens when she learns everything?"
Victoria looked at him.
"She takes back what belongs to her."
"And then?"
A small smile appeared.
"Then the world changes."
Back at Escalante Tower...
Mariana studied the documents again.
There was something bothering her.
A detail she couldn't ignore.
"Daniel."
"Yes?"
"Find every connection between Victoria and my father."
Daniel nodded.
Andrew looked confused.
"Why your father?"
"Because if Victoria was involved..."
Mariana paused.
"She didn't start with me."
The investigation lasted all night.
By morning...
They found something.
A photograph.
Taken twenty-five years earlier.
Carlos Escalante.
Andrew's father.
Victoria's father.
All standing together.
Andrew stared.
"My father knew her family?"
Daniel nodded.
"Not only knew."
He pointed to another document.
"They were business partners."
Mariana felt cold.
Another hidden connection.
Another secret.
Then Daniel revealed something worse.
"Victoria Laurent's father died under suspicious circumstances."
Andrew frowned.
"What does that have to do with us?"
Daniel looked at Mariana.
"Because your father investigated it."
Mariana froze.
"My father?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Daniel opened the report.
"Because Carlos Escalante believed Victoria's father was not killed because of business."
A pause.
"He believed he was killed because he discovered the truth about the families."
The room became silent.
Andrew looked at Mariana.
"So Victoria isn't after your money."
Mariana shook her head slowly.
"No."
"Then what?"
She looked at the old photograph.
"Justice."
But Daniel interrupted.
"Maybe."
They looked at him.
He continued:
"But there is another possibility."
"What?"
Daniel placed another file on the table.
"A hidden inheritance."
Inside was a legal document.
A transfer agreement.
The Escalante fortune.
But there was a condition.
A condition nobody knew existed.
Andrew read it.
Then looked shocked.
"Impossible."
Mariana took the document.
Her face changed.
The agreement stated:
If the primary heir becomes unable or unwilling to control the Escalante assets, temporary authority transfers to the appointed guardian.
Andrew looked at her.
"Guardian?"
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
"Who?"
The answer was written below.
A name.
Victoria Laurent.
Mariana stepped back.
"No."
Because suddenly everything connected.
Victoria wasn't trying to steal her fortune.
She was trying to prove Mariana was incapable of controlling it.
She wanted the world to see:
Mariana trusted the wrong people.
Mariana lost control.
Mariana failed.
And then...
Victoria would legally take everything.
Andrew looked at Mariana.
"She used our marriage."
Mariana nodded.
"Yes."
"She chose me because..."
"Because you were the perfect weapon."
The sentence hurt him.
Because it was true.
Andrew's arrogance.
His obsession with status.
His desire to be admired.
Those were the weaknesses Victoria exploited.
That night...
Andrew found Mariana alone.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he said:
"I was a weapon."
She looked at him.
"What?"
"Victoria used me."
A pause.
"But I still hurt you."
Mariana didn't answer.
Andrew continued.
"I spent years believing I was powerful."
"I thought I controlled everything."
He laughed bitterly.
"But I was just another piece on someone's board."
For the first time...
Mariana saw something different in him.
Not a powerful businessman.
Not a proud husband.
A broken man finally understanding what he had done.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
Mariana looked away.
"Good."
Andrew nodded.
"But I want to help."
"Why?"
He answered honestly.
"Because someone tried to destroy you."
A pause.
"And this time..."
"I won't be the person standing beside them."
Before Mariana could respond...
The lights in the building suddenly went out.
The entire tower went dark.
Security alarms screamed.
Daniel checked the system.
"Someone breached the network."
The main screen turned on.
A video appeared.
Victoria.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Hello, Mariana."
Everyone froze.
Victoria smiled.
"I know you found the documents."
A pause.
"I know you discovered the agreement."
Mariana stepped closer.
"Victoria."
The woman on the screen continued.
"But there is one thing you still don't know."
The screen changed.
A hospital record appeared.
A birth certificate.
A legal document.
Mariana's face turned pale.
Because the next words destroyed everything she believed about herself.
"Your father was not your biological father."
Silence.
Andrew looked at Mariana.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Victoria continued.
"The Escalante fortune was never inherited by you because you were his daughter."
A pause.
"It was transferred to you..."
"Because you were the only person who could unlock the final inheritance."
Mariana whispered:
"What are you saying?"
Victoria smiled sadly.
"I'm saying..."
"You were never the owner of the Escalante empire."
The screen went black.
Then one final message appeared.
THE LAST WEAPON WAS NEVER ANDREW.
IT WAS THE TRUTH ABOUT MARIANA.
Nobody moved.
Because after everything...
After the betrayal.
After the hidden accounts.
After the secret marriage.
A new question remained.
If Mariana was not Carlos Escalante's daughter...
Then who was she?
May you like
And why did the entire Escalante fortune depend on her?
TO BE CONTINUED...
