CHAPTER 4 – The Fortune She Buried

CHAPTER 4 – The Fortune She Buried

The elevator doors opened on the forty-second floor.

Andrew Whitmore stepped out expecting to see the same kind of world he had built for himself.

Luxury.

Power.

People waiting.

But Escalante Tower was different.

There were no unnecessary displays of wealth.

No golden decorations.

No portraits of executives hanging on walls.

No employees rushing around trying to impress someone important.

Everything was quiet.

Controlled.

Professional.

A place where decisions were made without needing applause.

And somehow...

That made Andrew feel smaller than any insult ever could.

The receptionist looked at him.

"Mr. Whitmore?"

Andrew nodded.

"Yes."

"Mrs. Escalante is waiting."

The words struck him.

Mrs. Escalante.

Not Mariana.

Not his wife.

Not the woman who used to wait for him at home.

The woman who belonged to this world.

He followed the assistant down the hallway.

Every step felt heavier.

The doors opened.

Mariana stood beside a large glass window overlooking the city.

She wore a simple black suit.

No expensive jewelry.

No attempt to prove anything.

She didn't need to.

The room itself proved enough.

Andrew stopped.

For a moment, he didn't recognize her.

Not because she looked different.

Because she looked like someone who had finally stopped pretending.

"Mariana."

She turned.

"Andrew."

Her voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

He expected anger.

A scream.

A demand for revenge.

Instead...

She simply looked at him.

And that was worse.

Because anger meant emotion.

Indifference meant she had already moved beyond him.

"I need to talk to you."

Mariana walked toward the conference table.

"You have thirty minutes."

Andrew followed.

"Thirty minutes?"

"Yes."

"That's all?"

She looked at him.

"You had four years."

The words silenced him.

He sat down.

For the first time...

Andrew Whitmore was sitting across from his wife like a businessman negotiating a deal.

Not like a husband.

Not like someone who knew her.

Because he realized something painful.

He never actually knew her.

"I want to understand."

Mariana remained standing.

"Understand what?"

"What happened."

She raised an eyebrow.

"What happened?"

"Yes."

He leaned forward.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

A long silence followed.

Then she asked:

"Tell you what?"

Andrew looked frustrated.

"That you were rich."

Mariana smiled slightly.

Not happily.

Sadly.

"That is what bothers you?"

He didn't answer.

She continued.

"Not that you slapped me?"

His expression changed.

"Not that you accused me of stealing?"

Silence.

"Not that you stood there while your mother humiliated me?"

Her voice remained controlled.

"Your biggest question is why I didn't tell you I had money?"

Andrew looked down.

Because he had no defense.

No explanation.

Nothing.

Mariana sat across from him.

"When I met you, I was not interested in your company."

"I was not interested in your family name."

"I was not interested in your wealth."

"I wanted to know if someone could love me without knowing what I owned."

Andrew whispered,

"And?"

She looked at him.

"You failed."

The words hurt more than he expected.

Because deep down...

He knew they were true.

"I never wanted to control you."

Mariana laughed softly.

"No?"

She opened a folder.

Inside were documents.

Hundreds of pages.

"Andrew, do you know how many times you asked me to sign something without reading it?"

He said nothing.

"Seven times."

She placed the documents on the table.

"Do you know how many times you told me business decisions were not something I should worry about?"

Another document.

"Thirty-two."

She looked at him.

"Do you know how many times your mother told me I should be grateful because I married into your family?"

Andrew closed his eyes.

He knew.

"But I stayed."

Her voice softened.

"I stayed because I believed the man I married was different from the people around him."

A pause.

"I believed you loved me."

Andrew looked at her.

"I did."

Mariana's expression didn't change.

"You loved the version of me you created."

That sentence destroyed him.

Because it was exactly right.

He loved the quiet wife.

The supportive wife.

The wife who never challenged him.

The wife who made his problems disappear.

He didn't love the woman.

He loved what she gave him.

Mariana stood.

"My father warned me."

Andrew looked up.

"About me?"

"No."

She looked toward the window.

"About the world."

Years earlier...

Carlos Escalante had sat with his daughter in this very office.

At the time, Mariana was preparing to marry Andrew.

Her father had looked at the engagement announcement.

"You know what will happen."

She smiled.

"What?"

"They will see your name before they see your heart."

Mariana shook her head.

"Andrew isn't like that."

Her father had remained silent.

A father's silence often said more than words.

"I want to know if someone loves me because of me."

Carlos had sighed.

"Then hide everything."

"Remove every advantage."

"Become someone they can underestimate."

Mariana had looked confused.

"Why?"

"Because only then will you see who they truly are."

Back in the present...

Andrew listened quietly.

"So you tested me?"

Mariana looked at him.

"No."

"I gave you a chance."

Those words stayed between them.

Daniel entered the room.

"Mrs. Escalante."

Mariana turned.

"Yes?"

"The executive reports are ready."

He placed a tablet on the table.

Andrew noticed.

"Reports about what?"

Mariana didn't answer.

Daniel did.

"Whitmore Holdings."

Andrew stiffened.

"What about it?"

Daniel looked at Mariana.

"Would you like me to explain?"

She nodded.

"Go ahead."

Daniel opened the report.

"Before Mrs. Escalante invested, Whitmore Holdings had approximately eighteen months before insolvency."

Andrew looked uncomfortable.

Daniel continued.

"The company survived because of her private funds."

"Then she negotiated with investors."

"She personally secured contracts that stabilized the company."

"She created the expansion strategy."

Andrew stared.

"You knew all this?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Everyone in the financial world knew."

Everyone.

Again.

Except him.

"The reason Whitmore Holdings grew so quickly..."

Daniel continued.

"Was because it had access to Escalante resources."

Andrew whispered,

"And I thought..."

He stopped.

Mariana finished the sentence.

"You thought you built everything alone."

The room became silent.

Andrew finally asked the question he had been avoiding.

"How much?"

Mariana looked at him.

"What?"

"How much did you put into my company?"

Daniel answered.

"Initial investment."

He checked the report.

"Three hundred million dollars."

Andrew froze.

The number was impossible.

But there was more.

"Additional restructuring support."

"Two hundred million."

"Emergency guarantees."

"One hundred fifty million."

Andrew slowly sat back.

The empire he bragged about...

The empire he used to make Mariana feel small...

Had been built on her generosity.

"And now?"

Andrew asked quietly.

"What happens now?"

Mariana looked at him.

"Now?"

A pause.

"Now you learn what happens when the person holding everything together lets go."

Andrew stood.

"You can destroy me."

Mariana didn't respond.

"You can take everything."

Still silence.

"But why?"

That question surprised her.

"Why what?"

"Why punish me?"

For a moment...

She saw the man she married.

Not the arrogant man from last night.

Not the cruel man who ordered her to kneel.

Just Andrew.

The man who once held her hand.

The man who once made her laugh.

And that made the answer harder.

"I don't want revenge."

Andrew looked surprised.

"I want accountability."

She walked toward the door.

"There is a difference."

Before he left...

Andrew stopped.

"Mariana."

She turned.

"I really didn't know."

Her eyes softened slightly.

"I know."

A pause.

"That's the problem."

After he left...

Carlos Escalante entered the office.

He had been listening from the other room.

"You still love him."

Mariana looked away.

"That doesn't matter."

"It does."

"No."

She shook her head.

"Love is not enough."

Her father nodded.

"You're right."

That evening...

Andrew returned to the mansion.

But everything felt different.

Brenda immediately approached him.

"What did she say?"

Andrew ignored her.

He walked through the rooms.

The rooms Mariana designed.

The rooms Mariana paid for.

The life Mariana created.

Then he stopped in front of a family portrait.

A picture taken three years earlier.

Andrew smiling.

Margaret smiling.

Brenda nowhere.

Mariana standing beside him.

A woman who had given him everything.

A woman he had destroyed.

His phone rang.

The number was unknown.

He answered.

"Hello?"

A man's voice spoke.

"Mr. Whitmore."

"Who is this?"

"Someone who knows what happened."

Andrew frowned.

"What do you want?"

The voice became quieter.

"You think Mariana Escalante is your biggest problem."

A pause.

"She isn't."

Andrew froze.

"What are you talking about?"

The man replied:

"The fortune she buried..."

"...wasn't just money."

The call ended.

Andrew stared at the phone.

For the first time...

He realized something.

Mariana had hidden more than wealth.

She had hidden a secret.

A secret powerful enough that someone was afraid of it.

And whatever that secret was...

It was the reason her father had warned her to hide who she really was.

Because Mariana Escalante wasn't just the woman who owned his empire.

May you like

She was connected to something much bigger.

Something Andrew had never even imagined.
