CHAPTER 9 – The Secret Account

CHAPTER 9 – The Secret Account
The name Whitmore had fallen.
But the truth was...
The collapse had only revealed the first crack.
Behind the humiliation.
Behind the financial disaster.
Behind the betrayal...
There was something much darker.
A secret that had existed long before Andrew ever raised his hand against Mariana.
A secret hidden inside numbers.
Inside contracts.
Inside an account that was never supposed to be discovered.
Andrew spent the entire night staring at the message.
Ask Mariana who really arranged your marriage.
Those words repeated in his mind.
Because for the first time...
He began questioning everything.
Their first meeting.
Their relationship.
Their wedding.
Even the moment he thought he had fallen in love.
What if it had all been planned?
What if Mariana wasn't the only person hiding something?
The next morning...
Andrew went to Escalante Tower again.
This time, he didn't ask for permission.
He didn't demand to see Mariana.
He simply waited.
For almost three hours.
Eventually...
The receptionist called upstairs.
A few minutes later, Mariana appeared.
She looked surprised.
"You came back."
Andrew stood.
"I received a message."
Her expression changed slightly.
"What message?"
He showed her the screen.
When she read it...
The calm expression disappeared.
Only for a moment.
But Andrew noticed.
"You know something."
Mariana looked away.
"Where did you get this?"
"Unknown number."
"Did anyone contact you before?"
"No."
She remained silent.
And Andrew understood.
There was something she wasn't telling him.
"Mariana."
She looked at him.
"Who arranged our marriage?"
The question hung in the air.
For several seconds...
Neither moved.
Then Mariana walked back into her office.
"Close the door."
Andrew followed.
Something about her tone told him this was serious.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Fear.
"I need you to understand something."
Mariana sat down.
"When I met you, I believed our relationship was natural."
Andrew watched her carefully.
"But?"
She took a breath.
"But after everything that happened..."
She looked at the message again.
"I started asking the same questions."
Andrew frowned.
"You mean you don't know?"
"No."
The answer surprised him.
"Then who does?"
Mariana looked toward the window.
"Someone who has been watching my family for years."
She opened a drawer.
Inside was a small envelope.
Old.
Worn.
She placed it on the table.
"This belonged to my father."
Andrew looked at it.
"What is it?"
"Something I was never supposed to find."
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a single document.
A bank statement.
Andrew scanned it.
Then froze.
Because one name appeared.
Not Escalante.
Not Whitmore.
A third name.
Vantage International Trust.
"What is this?"
Mariana's voice was quiet.
"I don't know."
Andrew looked at the numbers.
The account contained millions.
"Your father had a secret account?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"Then whose?"
She looked at him.
"That's what I have been trying to discover."
Years earlier...
Before Mariana met Andrew...
Carlos Escalante had been investigating financial movements within the family empire.
He had discovered money disappearing.
Not large enough to attract attention.
Not small enough to ignore.
Millions transferred slowly over years.
A hidden operation.
A person inside the family.
Carlos had told Mariana only one thing.
"Trust carefully."
She had asked:
"Who should I trust?"
Her father answered:
"Sometimes the person standing beside you is more dangerous than the enemy outside."
Back in the present...
Andrew stared at the document.
"You think someone inside your family did this?"
Mariana nodded.
"Possibly."
"Why hide it?"
"Because whoever did this had power."
Andrew looked at her.
"And you think I was involved?"
The question surprised her.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because you were too unaware."
The honesty almost offended him.
Almost.
But he knew she was right.
Daniel entered the office.
"Mrs. Escalante."
Mariana looked up.
"What happened?"
He placed a tablet on the table.
"We found something."
Andrew stood.
"What?"
Daniel looked at him.
"A hidden account connected to Whitmore Holdings."
Andrew froze.
"What?"
Daniel continued.
"Not a company account."
"A private one."
Mariana's expression changed.
"Whose name?"
Daniel hesitated.
"That is the problem."
He turned the screen around.
The account holder was hidden.
Only one reference appeared.
A.V.
Andrew's face changed.
Adrian Vale.
The name from Brenda's documents.
"Who is Adrian Vale?"
Mariana asked.
Andrew looked at her.
"I don't know."
Daniel spoke.
"But he knows both of you."
The room became silent.
They began investigating immediately.
The account records showed something disturbing.
Money had been transferred from multiple companies connected to Whitmore Holdings.
Then moved through several offshore accounts.
Then deposited into the secret account.
The total amount?
Enough to destroy the company.
Andrew stared at the numbers.
"Someone was stealing from us."
Mariana corrected him.
"From me."
The words hurt.
Because she was right.
The money wasn't just corporate.
It was the money she used to protect the company.
Someone had been secretly taking from the very foundation she built.
Then Daniel found something else.
"Mrs. Escalante."
Everyone looked at him.
"The account was opened six months before your wedding."
Andrew went still.
Six months.
Before their wedding.
Before they met.
Before everything.
Mariana whispered:
"Impossible."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He showed another file.
"The person who created the account..."
A pause.
"...also paid for the private investigation that selected Andrew Whitmore."
Andrew felt cold.
"What?"
Mariana looked at him.
"Selected?"
Daniel nodded.
"The investigation included your background."
"Your financial history."
"Your family."
"Your personality."
Andrew stepped back.
"No."
He shook his head.
"That can't be true."
But deep down...
He knew.
Because suddenly everything felt different.
The first meeting.
The timing.
The opportunities.
The way their relationship moved so quickly.
"Someone chose me."
Andrew whispered.
Mariana looked at him.
"Yes."
"And sent me to you."
She nodded.
For the first time...
Andrew understood something terrifying.
He had always believed he was the one who found Mariana.
But maybe...
He had been placed in her path.
That evening...
Mariana met with Victoria Laurent again.
This time, she demanded answers.
"You knew."
Victoria remained silent.
"You knew someone was manipulating my life."
Victoria sighed.
"I suspected."
"Who?"
"I can't say."
Mariana stepped closer.
"After everything my family lost..."
"After everything Andrew and I went through..."
"You still protect them?"
Victoria looked at her sadly.
"I protect you."
"No."
Mariana's voice hardened.
"You protect the truth from me."
Victoria finally spoke.
"Your father discovered something dangerous."
"What?"
"A financial network."
"One that involved people close to him."
Mariana froze.
"Who?"
Victoria looked at her.
"Your uncle."
The room went silent.
Mariana felt the air leave her lungs.
Her uncle.
A member of her own family.
Someone who had attended every holiday.
Every celebration.
Someone who called her "little Mariana."
"No."
Victoria looked away.
"I wish I was wrong."
Meanwhile...
Andrew returned home.
But he wasn't alone.
Someone was waiting inside.
A man sitting in the darkness.
Andrew froze.
"Who are you?"
The man slowly stood.
Older.
Calm.
Dangerous.
"Someone who knows the truth."
Andrew stepped back.
"Adrian Vale?"
The man smiled.
"So Mariana finally told you."
Andrew's heart raced.
"You arranged everything."
Adrian smiled.
"Not everything."
A pause.
"But enough."
"Why?"
Adrian walked closer.
"Because your marriage was never about love."
Andrew clenched his fists.
"Then what was it about?"
Adrian looked directly into his eyes.
"Control."
Andrew felt sick.
"Control over what?"
Adrian smiled.
"The Escalante fortune."
The answer changed everything.
At that moment...
Mariana received a message.
From an unknown number.
A photo appeared.
It showed Andrew standing with Adrian.
The caption underneath read:
Your husband finally met the man who chose him.
Mariana stared at the image.
Because she realized something.
Andrew had spent four years betraying her.
But now...
He might be the only person who could help her uncover the person who started it all.
The person who wanted her powerless.
The person who had been waiting for years.
And somewhere in the city...
A man opened an old file.
Inside was a photograph of Mariana as a child.
Beside it...
A photograph of Andrew.
A red line connected them.
The man smiled.
"Everything is finally moving."
Because the secret account was never about money.
It was proof.
Proof that their entire marriage...
May you like
Had been part of a plan.
