CHAPTER 7 – The Husband Who Never Knew His Wife

CHAPTER 7 – The Husband Who Never Knew His Wife

Andrew Whitmore had spent four years sleeping beside a stranger.

That was the thought that haunted him the most.

Not the lost company.

Not the frozen accounts.

Not the humiliation of being removed from the position he once believed belonged to him.

It was the realization that the woman who had shared his bed, his home, and his life...

Was someone he never truly knew.

The mansion was quiet.

Too quiet.

Andrew sat alone in the living room where everything had started.

The same room where he had raised his hand.

The same room where his mother had accused Mariana.

The same room where Brenda had stood beside him, believing she had already won.

Now...

Nobody was there.

No guests.

No laughter.

No servants rushing around.

Just silence.

And memories.

He looked toward the broken coffee table.

The glass had been replaced.

The blood had been cleaned.

The evidence of that night was gone.

But Andrew could still see it.

Mariana standing there.

Confused.

Hurt.

Still trying to explain herself.

And him...

Choosing to believe everyone except her.

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

It was his lawyer.

He almost ignored it.

But he answered.

"Yes?"

"Mr. Whitmore."

The lawyer sounded uncomfortable.

"We received additional information from Escalante's legal team."

Andrew closed his eyes.

"What now?"

"The ownership agreements."

"What about them?"

"There is a clause you need to see."

Andrew stood.

"What clause?"

A pause.

"The reason Mariana never took control of Whitmore Holdings earlier."

Andrew frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

The lawyer continued.

"Mr. Whitmore, according to the agreement, Mrs. Escalante could have removed you at any time."

Silence.

"Any time?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't she?"

The lawyer hesitated.

"Because she believed you were capable of becoming better."

Andrew lowered himself into the chair.

The answer hurt more than he expected.

Because Mariana had not stayed because she was weak.

She stayed because she believed in him.

After the call ended...

Andrew sat there for a long time.

Then he noticed something.

A small wooden box on the bookshelf.

Mariana's.

He had seen it hundreds of times.

But he had never asked about it.

Never wondered.

Never cared.

He walked toward it.

For the first time...

He opened something that belonged to his wife.

Inside were old photographs.

Not luxury.

Not wealth.

Just memories.

A young Mariana standing beside an older man.

Her father.

Carlos Escalante.

A little girl holding his hand.

A family that looked happy.

Another photo showed Mariana receiving an award at a university.

Another showed her speaking at a business conference.

Andrew stared.

He didn't recognize any of it.

Because the woman in those pictures...

Was not the woman he thought he married.

A letter sat beneath the photographs.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

He opened it.

It was from Carlos Escalante.

To Mariana.

"My daughter,"

"If you choose a life away from this family, I will respect your decision."

"But never forget who you are."

"The world may judge you by what you own."

"Do not allow them to convince you that your value comes from your fortune."

Andrew stopped reading.

Because those words explained everything.

Mariana had hidden her wealth because she wanted to know one thing.

Could someone love her without it?

And Andrew had failed.

Meanwhile...

At Escalante Tower...

Mariana stood across from the woman in the red coat.

Her name was Victoria Laurent.

Someone from a chapter of Mariana's life she had buried years ago.

"You shouldn't be here."

Victoria smiled.

"That's the first thing you say?"

"What do you want?"

Victoria looked around the office.

"You finally came back."

Mariana's expression hardened.

"I never wanted this."

"No."

Victoria nodded.

"You wanted a normal life."

A pause.

"And you almost had it."

Mariana looked away.

"Almost."

Victoria studied her.

"Andrew."

Mariana didn't respond.

"He really didn't know, did he?"

"No."

"Not even a little?"

"No."

Victoria laughed quietly.

"Four years with the most powerful woman in the country..."

"And he thought you were just a lucky wife."

Mariana's eyes darkened.

"Don't."

Victoria stopped smiling.

Because she understood.

Mariana wasn't angry because of the money.

She was hurt because of the betrayal.

"You loved him."

Mariana remained silent.

Victoria continued.

"That was your weakness."

"No."

Mariana looked at her.

"My weakness was believing love could change someone who didn't want to change."

Back at the mansion...

Andrew received another surprise.

Margaret arrived.

She walked in like she still owned the place.

"Andrew."

He looked up.

"What do you want?"

She frowned.

"Excuse me?"

For years, he would have apologized immediately.

Not today.

"Why are you here?"

Margaret looked offended.

"This is my family home."

Andrew laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

"Is it?"

She froze.

"What does that mean?"

He looked around.

"Apparently none of us knew what belonged to us."

Margaret's face changed.

"You cannot let Mariana do this."

Andrew stared.

"Do what?"

"Destroy us."

A pause.

Then he asked:

"Did you know?"

She avoided his eyes.

His heart sank.

"Mother."

She remained silent.

"Did you know who she was?"

Finally...

Margaret spoke.

"I knew she came from a wealthy family."

Andrew felt his anger rise.

"You knew?"

"Andrew, listen—"

"No."

He stepped back.

"You knew."

Margaret tried to defend herself.

"I was protecting this family."

Andrew laughed.

"Protecting?"

"You spent four years humiliating her."

"Calling her worthless."

"Treating her like she was lucky to be here."

His voice became louder.

"She was the reason we were here."

Margaret's expression changed.

Because even she had to face it now.

The woman she looked down on...

Was the person who saved them.

"She never told me."

Margaret whispered.

Andrew looked at her.

"Because she wanted to know if we loved her."

A pause.

"And we proved we didn't."

That night...

Andrew couldn't sleep.

Every memory changed.

Every conversation.

Every argument.

Every moment he thought he understood Mariana...

Was different now.

He remembered their first date.

She had asked him:

"What would you do if you lost everything?"

He had laughed.

"I would rebuild."

She smiled.

"I hope you mean that."

At the time, he thought it was a strange question.

Now he understood.

She was asking who he was without power.

He remembered their wedding.

Mariana had chosen a simple ceremony.

He had wanted something bigger.

More impressive.

More luxurious.

She had said:

"I don't need people to remember the wedding."

"I need us to remember the promise."

He remembered.

She always cared about what mattered.

And he always cared about what people saw.

The next morning...

Andrew returned to Escalante Tower.

But this time...

He wasn't angry.

He wasn't demanding.

He wasn't trying to regain control.

He simply wanted answers.

Mariana allowed him into her office.

"Why are you here?"

Andrew stood quietly.

"I want to know you."

The words surprised her.

"What?"

"I spent four years married to you."

"But I never knew you."

She looked at him.

"And whose fault is that?"

"Mine."

The honesty shocked her.

Andrew continued.

"I thought I knew everything."

"I thought you were lucky."

"I thought I was the one giving you a better life."

He swallowed.

"But you were the one giving me everything."

Mariana looked away.

Because hearing regret from him was harder than hearing anger.

Anger was easy.

Regret was complicated.

"I need to ask you something."

She waited.

"Did you ever think about leaving?"

A long silence.

"Every day."

The answer broke him.

"Then why didn't you?"

She looked at him.

"Because every day, I hoped you would become the man you promised to be."

Andrew lowered his head.

"I don't deserve forgiveness."

"No."

She agreed.

"You don't."

The answer was painful.

But fair.

"But..."

She continued.

Andrew looked up.

"Forgiveness is not something I give because you ask."

A pause.

"It's something you earn by becoming someone who doesn't need to ask."

For the first time...

Andrew understood.

Mariana wasn't trying to punish him.

She was trying to save herself.

Before he left...

He stopped at the door.

"Mariana."

She looked at him.

"I am sorry."

A simple sentence.

No excuses.

No explanations.

Just an apology.

She didn't answer.

After he left...

Daniel entered.

"Do you believe him?"

Mariana looked at the closed door.

"I don't know."

"Do you forgive him?"

She shook her head.

"Not yet."

Outside...

Andrew walked through the city alone.

No driver.

No assistants.

No security.

Just himself.

For years, he had believed losing money was the worst thing that could happen.

He was wrong.

The worst thing...

Was losing the one person who had loved him before he became powerful.

That evening...

A new message arrived on Mariana's phone.

Unknown sender.

Only one sentence.

You think Andrew betrayed you.

But the truth is... someone else planned your entire marriage.

Mariana stared at the screen.

Her heart stopped.

Because suddenly...

Everything changed.

The betrayal was bigger than Andrew.

The marriage she thought was her choice...

May have been planned from the beginning.

And somewhere in the shadows...

May you like

Someone had been watching them all along.

TO BE CONTINUED...
