Chapter 12 — The Truth Teresa Was Afraid to Tell

Chapter 12 — The Truth Teresa Was Afraid to Tell
Richard's gun was pointed directly at my father.
For thirteen years, I had believed Michael Bradley was dead.
For thirteen years, I had mourned him.
And now, after finally finding him alive, I was being ordered to kill him.
Richard smiled.
“Your grandfather wants an answer.”
Nobody moved.
Michael stood between me and the gun.
“Richard.”
“You should have stayed dead.”
Michael's expression didn't change.
“I tried.”
“You failed.”
Richard glanced at me.
“Connor has thirty seconds.”
I stared at the weapon.
Then at my father.
Then at Teresa.
She was trembling.
“Mom.”
She looked at me.
I had never seen her so frightened.
Not when Richard held a gun to her head.
Not when we discovered the archive.
Not when my grandfather's voice came through the phone.
This was different.
She was afraid of the question I hadn't asked yet.
“What aren't you telling me?”
Teresa closed her eyes.
“Everything.”
Richard laughed.
“You still want to protect him?”
Teresa looked at Michael.
Then at me.
“No.”
Michael turned.
“Teresa.”
She shook her head.
“I'm done.”
He stared at her.
“Don't.”
“I've spent twenty-five years lying.”
“Because you had to.”
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“Because I was afraid.”
Richard smiled.
“Finally.”
Teresa stepped forward.
“I will tell him.”
Richard lowered his weapon slightly.
“Then tell him.”
She looked at me.
“The night your father disappeared…”
She took a breath.
“…I wasn't with him.”
I frowned.
“You said you were.”
“I lied.”
Michael closed his eyes.
Teresa continued.
“I was with Victor.”
Amy gasped.
I stared at her.
“What?”
“I went to him willingly.”
“Why?”
“To save you.”
“Save me from what?”
“Your grandfather.”
She swallowed.
“He had threatened to kill you.”
Michael stepped forward.
“That wasn't the deal.”
Teresa turned toward him.
“You weren't there.”
“I knew what was happening.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You knew half of it.”
Michael looked stunned.
Teresa's voice became stronger.
“You knew your father wanted the Falcon files.”
“You knew Richard was working for him.”
“You knew Victor was involved.”
“But you didn't know what they wanted from me.”
Michael said nothing.
Teresa looked at me.
“They didn't want money.”
“What did they want?”
“They wanted a child.”
I felt cold.
“A child?”
“A successor.”
She looked at Amy.
“They wanted Amy.”
Amy stepped backward.
“Why?”
“Because your grandfather believed you could unlock the original trust.”
“But why would they need my blood?”
Teresa's eyes filled with tears.
“Because the trust was designed around a genetic condition.”
“What condition?”
“The original owner could transfer ownership only to a direct biological descendant.”
I looked at Amy.
“That's why.”
“Yes.”
“But I'm not the heir.”
Teresa shook her head.
“You were never supposed to be.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“The trust wasn't created for you.”
“Then who?”
She looked at me.
“Your father.”
I stared.
Michael's face changed.
“No.”
Teresa nodded.
“Michael was the biological heir.”
I looked at him.
“But then why did Grandpa create it?”
“Because he believed Michael would eventually betray him.”
Michael whispered:
“He knew.”
Teresa continued.
“He created the trust as a trap.”
“A trap?”
“Yes.”
“If Michael ever tried to expose him, the trust would activate.”
“What would happen?”
“The entire Falcon network would transfer to Michael.”
I stared.
“And then?”
“If Michael died, it would pass to his children.”
My eyes moved toward Amy.
Then Ethan.
Then myself.
Teresa nodded.
“Exactly.”
Richard interrupted.
“Enough.”
He raised the gun.
“Thirty seconds are over.”
Michael looked at him.
“Tell your father he failed.”
Richard's face hardened.
“You don't get to speak.”
“You're afraid.”
“Of you?”
“No.”
Michael looked at me.
“You're afraid of him.”
Richard's eyes flickered.
My grandfather.
The man behind everything.
Richard's hand tightened around the gun.
“Connor.”
I looked at him.
“Kill Michael.”
“No.”
Richard smiled.
“Then I'll kill him.”
I stepped forward.
“Do it.”
Richard hesitated.
I continued.
“You want the trust?”
“Yes.”
“You want me to inherit it?”
“Yes.”
“Then kill him.”
Michael stared at me.
“Connor.”
I ignored him.
“Because if I kill my father, I'll never sign anything.”
Richard's smile disappeared.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
I pointed toward the gun.
“You need me alive.”
“Yes.”
“You need me to accept the trust.”
“Yes.”
“And you need the trust transferred legally.”
Richard said nothing.
“So you can't kill me.”
His expression darkened.
“You're your father's son.”
I smiled bitterly.
“Finally figured it out.”
Richard's men moved toward us.
Ethan raised his weapon.
A shot exploded.
The ceiling cracked.
Everyone dropped.
I grabbed Amy.
Michael pulled Teresa behind the desk.
Helen crawled toward the wall.
Daniel tackled one of Richard's men.
Chaos erupted.
Another gunshot.
Then another.
Richard ran.
I chased him.
“Connor!”
Michael shouted.
I ignored him.
Richard disappeared through the hallway.
I followed.
He slammed a door behind him.
I kicked it open.
The room was empty.
A window stood open.
I looked down.
Three stories.
He couldn't have escaped that way.
Then I noticed the floor.
A hidden panel.
I opened it.
A staircase descended.
I followed.
The staircase led into the basement.
The walls were covered with photographs.
My family.
Michael.
Teresa.
Amy.
Ethan.
Robert.
Victor.
Even me.
Every stage of our lives had been documented.
I stopped.
Someone had been watching us for decades.
At the end of the corridor was a room.
Richard stood inside.
His gun was gone.
He was holding something else.
A photograph.
He turned.
“Do you know what this is?”
I stared.
It was my mother.
Teresa.
But she looked different.
Younger.
Standing beside a man I didn't recognize.
Richard said:
“This was taken before you were born.”
“Who is he?”
Richard smiled.
“Your grandfather.”
I frowned.
“I know what he looks like.”
“No.”
Richard turned the photograph around.
“You don't.”
I looked again.
The man beside Teresa wasn't my grandfather.
At least not the man I remembered.
He looked younger.
Different.
Richard said:
“Your grandfather died twenty-five years ago.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“The man controlling Falcon isn't your grandfather.”
My heart stopped.
“Then who is he?”
Richard's smile disappeared.
“My father.”
“Your father is my grandfather.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“My father was Thomas Bradley.”
I froze.
“Thomas?”
“Yes.”
I remembered.
The name.
The identity.
The man Teresa had supposedly become.
Richard continued.
“He didn't die.”
My stomach tightened.
“Then who is Teresa?”
Richard laughed.
“That's what she was afraid to tell you.”
I ran upstairs.
“Mom!”
Everyone looked at me.
Teresa froze.
“Where is Richard?”
“Gone,” Ethan said.
I grabbed Teresa's shoulders.
“Tell me the truth.”
She looked at Michael.
He lowered his eyes.
“What truth?”
“Thomas.”
Her face went white.
I knew.
“You are not Thomas.”
“No.”
“You are not my mother.”
Teresa began crying.
“Yes.”
I stepped backward.
“Then who are you?”
She couldn't answer.
Michael whispered:
“Her name is Elena.”
I stared.
Elena.
The name felt strangely familiar.
Amy looked at her.
“Who are you?”
Teresa—Elena—closed her eyes.
“I am your biological mother.”
Amy stopped breathing.
I looked between them.
“You said Helen was her mother.”
“She was.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“Helen carried you.”
Amy's face went pale.
“But you…”
“I gave birth to your DNA.”
The room went silent.
I couldn't understand.
Elena continued.
“Helen was the surrogate.”
Amy stared at her.
“So you're my mother.”
“Yes.”
“And Thomas?”
Elena looked at Michael.
“Thomas was your biological father.”
I felt dizzy.
“Then why did you become Teresa?”
“To hide.”
“From whom?”
“Everyone.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas was the most dangerous man in Falcon.”
I looked at Michael.
“What did he do?”
Michael's voice was quiet.
“He created it.”
My stomach dropped.
“Thomas created Falcon?”
“Yes.”
Elena nodded.
“He built it.”
“Then why did you betray him?”
“I didn't.”
“Then why did Michael say you were protecting us?”
“Because I was.”
“From Thomas?”
“No.”
“From myself.”
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“I helped build the first system.”
“You?”
“Yes.”
“With Thomas?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I believed we were helping people disappear.”
“And?”
“We weren't.”
“What were you doing?”
She whispered:
“We were erasing them.”
Nobody spoke.
Elena continued.
“People who owed money.”
“People who knew secrets.”
“People who threatened powerful men.”
“They came to us.”
“We gave them new identities.”
“But the identities were never clean.”
“Every new identity belonged to someone who had already died.”
I felt sick.
“So you stole dead people's lives.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas believed people were easier to control when they had no past.”
I looked at Michael.
“And you discovered it.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to expose him.”
“Yes.”
“And that's why he wanted you dead.”
“Yes.”
I looked at Elena.
“And you helped him?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I helped Michael destroy him.”
I stared.
“But you still protected Thomas.”
“Because he had Amy.”
“Where is he?”
Elena's face changed.
“He's dead.”
I frowned.
“Richard said—”
“Richard lied.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard doesn't know.”
“Know what?”
Elena looked toward the ceiling.
“Thomas died thirteen years ago.”
I froze.
“The night my father died?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“Thomas came to the house.”
“Why?”
“To kill Michael.”
“And?”
“Michael killed him first.”
I stared.
“Then whose grave is Thomas's?”
Elena whispered:
“No grave.”
The room suddenly felt unbearably small.
I looked at Michael.
“Did you kill him?”
Michael didn't answer.
“Dad.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Amy covered her mouth.
“You killed my father.”
Michael looked at her.
“He was going to kill you.”
“That doesn't answer my question.”
“Yes.”
Amy began crying.
“You killed him.”
“Yes.”
“And you let me believe he was missing.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I couldn't tell you the truth.”
Amy turned away.
Michael looked destroyed.
Then Elena spoke.
“He wasn't your only father.”
Amy looked at her.
“What?”
Elena pointed toward Ethan.
“He was.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“What?”
“Thomas wasn't Amy's biological father.”
Everyone froze.
Elena's voice shook.
“Ethan is.”
I stared.
“No.”
Ethan looked at Amy.
“I don't understand.”
Elena cried.
“I lied about everything.”
She turned toward me.
“I'm sorry.”
I felt something inside me break.
“So Robert…”
“Was never Amy's father.”
“Helen?”
“Her surrogate.”
“Thomas?”
“Her legal father.”
“Ethan?”
“Her biological father.”
Amy stared at Ethan.
Then at Elena.
“Why?”
Elena whispered:
“Because your grandfather wanted the perfect heir.”
I couldn't breathe.
“And you gave him one.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I gave him a child he could never control.”
Amy's eyes filled with tears.
“That was me.”
“Yes.”
A phone began ringing.
Everyone froze.
It was mine.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?”
My grandfather's voice returned.
“Now you understand.”
I looked around.
“Where are you?”
“Watching.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted you to know the truth before I took everything away.”
“You killed my father.”
“No.”
I froze.
“I didn't.”
“Then who did?”
He laughed softly.
“Ask Michael.”
I looked at my father.
He had gone pale.
My grandfather continued.
“Your father believes he killed Thomas.”
“He didn't.”
“He killed the wrong man.”
I felt cold.
“What are you saying?”
“The man Michael shot was not Thomas.”
I stared.
“Then who?”
A pause.
Then:
“Robert.”
I couldn't breathe.
“Robert was pretending to be Thomas.”
“Why?”
“Because Michael needed to believe Thomas was dead.”
My father stepped forward.
“That's a lie.”
My grandfather laughed.
“Is it?”
I looked at Michael.
He was shaking.
“You knew?”
“I didn't.”
“You killed Robert.”
Michael whispered:
“I thought he was Thomas.”
My grandfather's voice became colder.
“And while you were burying the wrong man…”
A photograph appeared on my phone.
My blood froze.
It showed Robert.
Alive.
Standing beside my grandfather.
The date was yesterday.
I stared.
“Robert is alive.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Where he has always been.”
“Where?”
My grandfather answered:
“Inside your company.”
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Ethan's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“What?”
He looked at me.
“Connor…”
“What?”
“The company headquarters just went into lockdown.”
“Why?”
Ethan swallowed.
“Someone has taken control of the entire Bradley Foundation.”
“Who?”
He looked at the screen.
“Robert.”
For thirteen years, I had believed our enemy was dead.
For thirteen years, we had been fighting shadows.
Now I understood.
Richard wasn't the mastermind.
Victor wasn't the mastermind.
Thomas wasn't the mastermind.
Even my grandfather wasn't the mastermind.
There was someone else.
Someone who had survived every betrayal.
Someone who had watched us destroy one another.
Someone who had been close enough to touch our lives without ever revealing his hand.
Robert.
The man we had trusted.
The man my father had protected.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
The man who had just taken control of everything.
And somewhere across the city, he was waiting.
Not for my mother.
Not for Amy.
Not for Michael.
For me.
May you like
Because the final piece of Project Falcon had always belonged to the person I trusted most.
Me.
