Chapter 13 — The Last Vault

Chapter 13 — The Last Vault

The message on Ethan's phone remained on the screen.

BRADLEY FOUNDATION — EMERGENCY LOCKDOWN.

Below it was a second notification.

ALL EXECUTIVE ACCESS REVOKED.

Then a third.

CONTROL TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Robert.

The man we had buried in our memories.

The man my father believed he had killed.

The man my grandfather had apparently trusted.

He had taken control of the Bradley Foundation.

And somehow, he had done it without firing a single shot.

I looked at Michael.

“Tell me everything.”

He didn't answer.

“Dad.”

His eyes were fixed on the phone.

“I don't know everything.”

“That isn't good enough.”

“I know.”

“Then start with Robert.”

Michael slowly sat down.

“Robert wasn't my friend.”

I frowned.

“You trusted him.”

“I trusted the person I thought he was.”

“What was he?”

“A fixer.”

“For Falcon?”

“Yes.”

“What did he fix?”

“Problems.”

I waited.

Michael looked at me.

“People.”

The room became silent.

“People who knew too much.”

“People who disappeared?”

“Yes.”

“Robert made them disappear?”

“Sometimes.”

“Sometimes?”

Michael nodded.

“Sometimes he made sure they were never found.”

My stomach tightened.

“And you worked with him?”

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought I could control him.”

“You couldn't.”

“No.”

Michael looked toward Elena.

“She warned me.”

Elena nodded.

“I told him Robert wasn't loyal.”

“But he didn't listen,” she said.

Michael's expression hardened.

“I thought Robert was loyal to the mission.”

“What mission?”

“Destroying Falcon.”

I stared.

“But Robert took control of it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he never wanted to destroy it.”

I understood.

“He wanted to own it.”

Michael nodded.

Ethan's phone rang again.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A voice spoke.

Ethan's expression changed.

“What do you mean?”

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“They've locked every account.”

“Whose?”

“Everyone's.”

“Personal accounts?”

“Business accounts. Trust accounts. Foundation accounts.”

“What about the emergency reserve?”

“Gone.”

I felt cold.

“How much?”

Ethan hesitated.

“Everything.”

Michael stood.

“That isn't possible.”

Ethan turned the phone toward him.

“The transfer was authenticated through the original Falcon authority.”

Michael went pale.

“Impossible.”

“What?”

Michael stared at the screen.

“He has the master key.”

I looked at him.

“What master key?”

“The final vault.”

Elena's face changed.

“No.”

Michael nodded.

“It's open.”

I had heard the phrase before.

The Last Vault.

It appeared in my father's documents.

Always referenced indirectly.

Never explained.

I had assumed it was another financial account.

It wasn't.

Michael walked toward the old desk.

He opened a hidden compartment.

Inside was a metal key.

It was small.

Black.

No markings.

“This is the physical key.”

I stared at it.

“To what?”

“The last vault.”

“Where is it?”

“My father built it beneath the original Bradley estate.”

“The house?”

“No.”

“Then where?”

Michael looked at me.

“Under the city.”

I frowned.

“That's impossible.”

“It isn't.”

He placed the key in my hand.

“The vault contains everything Falcon was built upon.”

“Money?”

“Some.”

“Documents?”

“Yes.”

“Names?”

“Yes.”

“Evidence?”

“Enough to destroy governments.”

I stared at the key.

“And Robert has access?”

“He has the digital half.”

I looked at the black key.

“And this is the physical half.”

“Yes.”

“Then he can't open it.”

Michael's expression was grim.

“Not without you.”

My blood ran cold.

“Why me?”

“Because the vault requires two things.”

“The key.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“Your blood.”

Nobody spoke.

I looked at my hands.

“My blood?”

Michael nodded.

“Your grandfather designed the final vault so no one person could access it.”

“So why am I required?”

“Because you're the last surviving direct heir.”

I looked at Ethan.

“What about him?”

“Ethan isn't registered.”

“Amy?”

“Neither is she.”

“Why?”

Michael looked toward Elena.

“Because you were named first.”

I stared.

“When?”

“Before you were born.”

“What does that mean?”

“The original Falcon trust was established before the Bradley Foundation existed.”

“And my name was attached to it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Michael answered quietly.

“Your grandfather wanted you to inherit everything.”

I shook my head.

“I don't want it.”

“You don't get to choose whether you inherit it.”

“But I can choose what happens to it.”

Michael nodded.

“That is why Robert needs you.”

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A video appeared.

I opened it.

Robert stood inside a room I recognized.

The Bradley Foundation boardroom.

Behind him hung my father's portrait.

Robert smiled.

“Hello, Connor.”

I stared at the screen.

“You've been busy.”

Robert laughed.

“I've been patient.”

“You killed people.”

“Yes.”

“You betrayed my father.”

“Yes.”

“You took the Foundation.”

“I reclaimed it.”

“You stole it.”

“No.”

He stepped closer to the camera.

“I built half of it.”

“With stolen money.”

“With money your family stole first.”

I said nothing.

Robert's smile faded.

“You think you're the victim.”

“Aren't I?”

“No.”

He leaned toward the camera.

“Your family created Falcon.”

“I know.”

“You benefited from it.”

“I never knew.”

“Knowing doesn't change ownership.”

“What do you want?”

“The vault.”

“I don't have access.”

Robert smiled.

“You do.”

“And if I refuse?”

“Then I begin dismantling your family.”

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

He pressed a button.

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

My mother.

Then Amy.

Then Ethan.

Then Michael.

Then Helen.

Each image was accompanied by a file number.

Robert said:

“Every person you love has a file.”

My blood ran cold.

“I can destroy them all.”

“Why?”

“Because I want the vault.”

“You'll never get it.”

Robert laughed.

“You're wrong.”

The screen changed again.

This time it showed a woman sitting in a chair.

Her hands were tied.

Her face was bruised.

I stopped breathing.

“Mom?”

Elena's face went white.

It wasn't her.

It was Helen.

Amy screamed.

“Mom!”

Robert's voice became calm.

“Bring me the key.”

The video ended.

Amy collapsed into a chair.

“I thought she was safe.”

I looked at Michael.

“How did he get her?”

Michael didn't answer.

I grabbed his jacket.

“How?”

“I don't know.”

“You're supposed to know everything.”

“I don't.”

“You kept us alive for thirteen years.”

“And I failed.”

His voice cracked.

“I failed everyone.”

I released him.

Elena walked toward Amy.

“We'll get her back.”

Amy looked at her.

“Will we?”

“Yes.”

“You said that before.”

“I know.”

“And my whole life became a lie.”

“I know.”

Amy wiped her tears.

“Then don't promise me.”

Elena stopped.

“Just bring her home.”

Elena nodded.

“I will.”

We left the house before sunrise.

Ethan drove.

Michael sat beside him.

I sat in the back with Amy and Elena.

Nobody spoke.

The city passed outside the windows.

Chicago was waking up.

People were going to work.

Coffee shops were opening.

Children were getting ready for school.

Ordinary life continued.

While our family was preparing to enter a hidden vault that had controlled generations of people.

We reached an abandoned subway station.

The entrance had been sealed for decades.

Michael unlocked a gate.

We descended.

The deeper we went, the colder it became.

After several minutes, we reached a steel door.

No handle.

No keypad.

Only a small circular depression.

Michael looked at me.

“Your hand.”

I placed my palm against it.

Nothing happened.

Then the door spoke.

“IDENTITY CONFIRMED.”

I froze.

The voice continued.

“CONNOR MICHAEL BRADLEY.”

Amy looked at me.

“That's creepy.”

The door continued.

“SECOND AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED.”

Michael inserted the black key.

A red light turned green.

“ACCESS DENIED.”

Michael frowned.

“What?”

The system spoke again.

“PRIMARY HEIR STATUS: DISPUTED.”

I looked at my father.

“What does that mean?”

He didn't answer.

Then another voice came through the speaker.

Robert.

“Hello, Connor.”

I froze.

The door unlocked.

Robert's voice continued.

“You finally found it.”

I stared at the darkness beyond the door.

“Come inside.”

“What did you do?”

“I changed the inheritance.”

“To what?”

“To me.”

Michael stepped forward.

“You can't.”

Robert laughed.

“I already did.”

The steel door opened.

Inside was a massive chamber.

Rows of shelves stretched into darkness.

Boxes.

Documents.

Hard drives.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Everything.

At the center was a glass case.

Inside sat a single black book.

Robert's voice echoed through the speakers.

“That book contains the original ownership record.”

I walked toward it.

“What does it say?”

“You'll find out.”

I opened the case.

The book was old.

The first page contained one sentence.

THE BRADLEY FOUNDATION BELONGS TO THE PERSON WHO CONTROLS THE LAST VAULT.

I turned the page.

A list of names.

Thomas Bradley.

Michael Bradley.

Connor Bradley.

Then one name had been added later.

Robert.

I stared.

“Robert changed the record.”

Michael shook his head.

“He couldn't.”

“Then how?”

Michael looked at the page.

His face went pale.

“This isn't a change.”

“What?”

“It was always there.”

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?”

Michael whispered:

“Robert was one of the original founders.”

The chamber seemed to tilt.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you never tell me?”

“Because I didn't know.”

I looked at the documents.

There were four founders.

Thomas Bradley.

Michael Bradley.

Elena.

And Robert.

The entire Falcon network had been created by four people.

Not one.

Four.

And one of them had been pretending to be an enemy for decades.

A door slammed behind us.

I turned.

The entrance had closed.

Amy ran toward it.

“It's locked!”

Michael rushed to the control panel.

Nothing.

Elena looked around.

“We're trapped.”

Robert's voice came through the speakers.

“Not trapped.”

He paused.

“Contained.”

I looked up.

“You wanted us here.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the vault needs all four bloodlines.”

I looked at Elena.

Then Michael.

Then Amy.

“And Robert?”

A smile appeared on the monitor.

“My bloodline is already inside.”

“What does that mean?”

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

A young man.

Robert.

Standing beside Thomas.

I stared.

Then another photograph.

Robert holding a baby.

I felt my blood turn cold.

The baby was me.

I looked at Michael.

He couldn't speak.

The speaker crackled.

Robert said:

“Connor, you were never Michael's son.”

Silence.

My heart stopped.

“What?”

May you like

Robert continued.

“You were mine.”
