Chapter 9 — The Man Behind Teresa

Chapter 9 — The Man Behind Teresa
“CONNOR!”
My mother's scream came again.
This time it was closer.
I ran.
Ethan was right behind me, followed by Amy and Daniel.
Robert was gone.
Victor was somewhere in the building.
And now Teresa was screaming my name as if her life depended on it.
Maybe it did.
We reached the upper corridor.
The emergency lights flickered.
Teresa stood at the far end.
Her hands were raised.
A man stood behind her with a gun pressed against the side of her head.
I stopped.
“Mom.”
Teresa looked at me.
Her face was covered in tears.
“Connor, don't come closer.”
The man smiled.
I recognized him.
Not from the photograph.
Not from the files.
From my childhood.
He had stood beside my father at every important event.
He had attended my graduation.
He had given me my first construction helmet.
He had been at my wedding.
I stared at him.
“Uncle Richard?”
Richard Bradley smiled.
My father's younger brother.
My uncle.
The man everyone in our family had trusted for thirty years.
The man my father had once called his best friend.
Richard pressed the gun harder against Teresa's head.
“Hello, Connor.”
Ethan raised his weapon.
Richard laughed.
“Put it down.”
“No.”
“Ethan.”
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“You're still making the same mistake your father made.”
Ethan didn't move.
Richard looked at me.
“Tell him.”
I shook my head.
“Tell him what?”
“That he's surrounded.”
I looked around.
Three men stepped from the shadows.
All carrying guns.
Daniel whispered:
“Connor…”
I lifted my hands.
“Put your weapon down.”
Ethan stared at me.
“Are you serious?”
“Do it.”
Slowly, he lowered the gun.
The other men moved forward.
Richard smiled.
“Good.”
Then he looked at Teresa.
“You should have listened to me.”
Teresa shook her head.
“I never trusted you.”
Richard laughed.
“You trusted me for twenty years.”
“I was pretending.”
“So was I.”
My stomach tightened.
I looked at my mother.
“You knew?”
Teresa closed her eyes.
“I knew who he was.”
“Then why did you let him stay?”
“Because your father needed him.”
Richard's smile disappeared.
“Michael needed me because he was weak.”
Teresa looked at him.
“No.”
“He was afraid.”
“No.”
“He couldn't make the decisions necessary to protect this family.”
Teresa's voice shook.
“He was better than you.”
Richard's expression hardened.
“That's why he died.”
The hallway went silent.
I stared at him.
“You killed my father?”
Richard didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
His silence was enough.
I took one step forward.
“You killed him.”
Richard smiled.
“I arranged his death.”
Amy gasped.
Ethan's face went pale.
Daniel whispered:
“Richard…”
Richard looked at him.
“You've always been too sentimental.”
I could barely breathe.
“My father trusted you.”
“Yes.”
“You were his brother.”
“Yes.”
“You stood beside his grave.”
Richard nodded.
“I gave the eulogy.”
My fists tightened.
“You watched us mourn him.”
“I watched you all mourn the wrong man.”
“What does that mean?”
Richard looked at Teresa.
“She knows.”
My mother shook her head.
“Don't.”
Richard laughed.
“You can't protect him anymore.”
I looked at Teresa.
“Mom.”
She wouldn't meet my eyes.
“What does he mean?”
She whispered:
“Your father wasn't supposed to die.”
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
Richard stepped closer.
“Michael was supposed to disappear.”
I stared.
“Disappear?”
“He had evidence.”
“What evidence?”
“The same evidence you're holding now.”
I looked toward the archive.
“The trust?”
“The trust was only part of it.”
“Then what?”
Richard smiled.
“Names.”
“What names?”
“The names of everyone involved in Project Falcon.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“And Victor?”
Richard looked at him.
“Especially Victor.”
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“My father?”
“Your father was never the mastermind.”
I felt cold.
“Then who was?”
Richard looked at me.
“Your grandfather.”
I froze.
“My grandfather?”
Richard nodded.
“Michael discovered what your grandfather had done.”
Teresa whispered:
“And he wanted to expose him.”
Richard laughed.
“Michael wanted to destroy the entire family.”
“He wanted justice.”
“He wanted revenge.”
I shook my head.
“You're lying.”
“Ask your mother.”
I looked at Teresa.
She was crying.
“Is he telling the truth?”
She hesitated.
That hesitation destroyed something inside me.
“Mom?”
Teresa finally looked at me.
“Yes.”
The word barely escaped her lips.
“Yes.”
I felt the hallway spin.
“My grandfather was involved?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“He created Project Falcon.”
“What was it?”
Teresa swallowed.
“A network.”
“What kind?”
“Financial.”
“Money laundering?”
“Worse.”
She closed her eyes.
“Identity laundering.”
I stared.
“I don't understand.”
“People disappeared.”
“People?”
“Witnesses. Investors. Employees. Anyone who knew too much.”
Richard smiled.
“They weren't killed.”
Teresa looked at him.
“Some were.”
Richard shrugged.
“Collateral damage.”
I felt sick.
“My grandfather destroyed people's lives.”
“Yes.”
“And my father found out.”
“Yes.”
“And you killed him.”
Richard nodded.
“Because he was going to expose everything.”
Amy stepped forward.
“What about me?”
Richard looked at her.
“You're the reason Michael became dangerous.”
She frowned.
“I don't understand.”
“You were the one thing he couldn't sacrifice.”
Richard looked at Teresa.
“She was supposed to be removed.”
Teresa's face changed.
“No.”
“You were told what to do.”
“I refused.”
“So Michael had to protect her.”
I looked at my mother.
“You were supposed to give Amy to Victor?”
Teresa shook her head violently.
“No.”
Richard smiled.
“That's what she wants you to believe.”
Amy stared at Teresa.
“Mom?”
Teresa broke down.
“I was supposed to take you and disappear.”
“Why didn't you?”
“Because Michael found me.”
“And?”
“He begged me to let him raise you.”
Amy covered her mouth.
“He said Victor would never stop.”
“He was right.”
Richard's smile faded.
“He was wrong about one thing.”
“What?”
“That he could hide you forever.”
Richard looked at Amy.
“Victor found you years ago.”
Amy went pale.
“When?”
Richard smiled.
“Your missing hour.”
Silence.
I turned toward Amy.
She looked confused.
Richard continued.
“You weren't unconscious.”
“You weren't kidnapped.”
“You were taken to Victor.”
Amy shook her head.
“No.”
“You spoke to him.”
“I don't remember.”
“He showed you something.”
“What?”
Richard's expression became almost amused.
“Your real birth certificate.”
Amy stared at him.
“What did it say?”
Richard looked at me.
“Ask your wife.”
Amy stepped backward.
“I don't know.”
Richard nodded.
“That's the problem.”
He turned to his men.
“Bring the file.”
One of them opened a briefcase.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
Richard handed it to Amy.
She stared at it.
“Open it.”
Her hands trembled.
I moved beside her.
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a birth certificate.
She read it.
Then dropped it.
I picked it up.
The name of the father was listed.
ROBERT HAYES.
My heart stopped.
Robert.
The man who had disappeared.
The man my father trusted.
The man who had been helping us.
The man who might be Amy's biological father.
I looked at Richard.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because Robert told me.”
“Where is he?”
Richard smiled.
“You'll find him where Michael left him.”
“Where?”
“Under the old Bradley cemetery.”
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
Richard stepped backward.
“The man you think is protecting you has been manipulating you from the beginning.”
I looked at Amy.
She was staring at the certificate.
“Robert is my father?”
Richard nodded.
“Biologically.”
Amy shook her head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“But my mother said—”
“Your mother lied.”
Teresa looked at Richard.
“You're enjoying this.”
“I've waited a long time.”
“For what?”
“To watch Michael's son discover that his entire life was built on lies.”
Then the lights suddenly came on.
Every light.
The men surrounding us lowered their weapons.
Richard looked confused.
Daniel smiled.
I looked at him.
“What did you do?”
Daniel held up his phone.
“Nothing.”
A voice came through the speakers.
“Richard.”
Richard froze.
My father's voice.
Michael.
Impossible.
Richard turned toward the ceiling.
“No.”
The recording continued.
“If you're hearing this, then you've finally revealed yourself.”
Richard's face turned white.
“You always were predictable.”
Richard shouted:
“Turn it off!”
The recording continued.
“You'll tell Connor about Falcon.”
“You'll tell him about Robert.”
“You'll tell him about Amy.”
“And you'll convince him that you are the one holding all the cards.”
Richard looked around desperately.
“How?”
My father's voice continued.
“Because you won't know that the entire conversation is being recorded.”
Daniel smiled.
I looked at the ceiling.
Tiny cameras emerged from the walls.
Richard's face collapsed.
“You set me up.”
My father's voice answered:
“No.”
“You set yourself up.”
The room went silent.
Then police sirens erupted outside.
Richard's men began running.
Officers stormed through the doors.
“DROP YOUR WEAPONS!”
Everything happened at once.
Two men surrendered.
One tried to run.
Ethan tackled him.
Daniel pulled Teresa behind a wall.
Richard stood frozen.
He looked at me.
“You think this changes anything?”
I stared at him.
“Yes.”
He laughed.
“You have no idea what you're dealing with.”
“Maybe not.”
I stepped closer.
“But now I know you're part of it.”
Richard's smile disappeared.
“You think Victor is your enemy?”
I said nothing.
“Victor is terrified of one person.”
“Who?”
Richard leaned closer.
“Your father.”
I frowned.
“My father is dead.”
Richard smiled.
“Are you sure?”
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
Richard looked toward the archive.
“Ask yourself why Michael's recordings keep appearing.”
He laughed.
“Ask yourself why every system still recognizes his authority.”
“Ask yourself why he prepared everything thirteen years after his supposed death.”
I stared at him.
“What are you saying?”
Richard whispered:
“Your father may not have died when you were told.”
The words hit me like a physical blow.
“No.”
Richard smiled.
“That's the question you should be asking.”
Then an officer pulled his hands behind his back.
He was handcuffed.
But he continued smiling.
“You're looking for the wrong dead man.”
The police took Richard away.
His men followed.
The building became quiet again.
Too quiet.
I looked at Teresa.
“You knew.”
She was crying.
“I suspected.”
“You never told me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You keep saying that.”
“I know.”
“You all keep using that excuse.”
Teresa looked at me.
“Because it's true.”
I shook my head.
“No more secrets.”
She nodded.
“No more.”
I turned to Amy.
She was still holding the birth certificate.
“Are you okay?”
She looked at me.
“I don't know.”
I took her hand.
“We'll find Robert.”
She nodded.
“And then we'll know the truth.”
Daniel approached.
“Connor.”
“What?”
“We found something else.”
He handed me a photograph.
It showed the old Bradley cemetery.
One grave was circled in red.
My father's grave.
I stared.
“What about it?”
“There's a second marker.”
“Where?”
“Behind it.”
I looked closer.
The photograph showed a small stone almost completely hidden beneath the grass.
No name.
No date.
Only a symbol.
A circle crossed by two lines.
My father's personal symbol.
The same symbol from the archive.
“What does it mean?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Teresa did.
She whispered:
“It means safe house.”
I turned toward her.
“There's a room beneath your father's grave.”
I stared at her.
“How do you know?”
“Because Michael showed it to me.”
“When?”
“The week before he died.”
I felt cold.
“What did he tell you?”
Teresa looked toward Amy.
“He said if anyone ever found out about Robert…”
She stopped.
“What?”
“He said we should never let Amy go there.”
“Why?”
“Because that's where the truth about her birth is.”
Amy stepped forward.
“Then we're going.”
Teresa grabbed her arm.
“No.”
Amy looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because if Robert is there…”
She swallowed.
“…then Michael may have left something else.”
“What?”
Teresa's voice became barely audible.
“Proof of who killed him.”
We left the building before sunrise.
The police took Richard away.
Victor was still missing.
Robert was gone.
Ethan came with us.
And Teresa sat silently in the back seat.
Nobody spoke for several miles.
Then Amy broke the silence.
“Connor.”
“Yes?”
“If Robert is my father…”
She looked out the window.
“…what does that make you and me?”
I squeezed her hand.
“Nothing changes.”
She looked at me.
“You're my wife.”
“And you're my husband.”
I smiled.
“No document changes that.”
She leaned against my shoulder.
For the first time that night, she looked slightly less afraid.
But then Ethan spoke from the front seat.
“There's something you should know.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“Richard was telling the truth about one thing.”
“Which thing?”
“Victor is afraid of Michael.”
“But Michael is dead.”
Ethan shook his head.
“That's not why.”
“Then why?”
“Because Victor believes Michael left something behind that could destroy him.”
“What?”
Ethan looked at Teresa.
She closed her eyes.
“A recording.”
“What recording?”
Teresa whispered:
“The night your father died.”
My heart stopped.
“You have it?”
“No.”
“Who does?”
Teresa looked at me.
“Robert.”
I stared ahead.
“So Robert has the recording.”
“Yes.”
“And that's why he disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“Then we find him.”
Teresa nodded.
“But there's something else.”
“What?”
She looked at Amy.
“Your father may have left a message for you.”
“Michael?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Teresa's eyes filled with tears.
“Under his grave.”
The cemetery appeared through the morning fog.
We parked outside.
Nobody else was there.
We walked toward my father's grave.
The stone looked exactly as it had for thirteen years.
Flowers.
Dust.
Silence.
I knelt.
I touched his name.
MICHAEL BRADLEY
My father.
The man I had spent years believing was gone.
I looked at the second marker.
The symbol was carved into the stone.
I pressed my hand against it.
Nothing happened.
Then Amy stepped forward.
She placed her hand beside mine.
A click sounded beneath the ground.
The earth shifted.
A narrow stone panel opened.
A staircase appeared.
Cold air rose from below.
Ethan stared.
Teresa began crying.
I looked at Amy.
She whispered:
“Do we go down?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
We descended.
At the bottom was a small room.
One chair.
One table.
One camera.
And a screen.
The screen turned on.
My father's face appeared.
He looked directly at us.
This time, there was no doubt.
He was alive in the recording.
And the first words he spoke were:
“Connor, if you're seeing this, Richard has confessed.”
I froze.
My father continued.
“But there is something I never told you.”
He looked at Amy.
“The man who raised you was not your only father.”
Amy's eyes widened.
My father's voice became softer.
“Robert is not your biological father either.”
Silence.
I stared at the screen.
Then he said:
“The truth about your birth is far more dangerous than Victor.”
The screen flickered.
A final message appeared.
SUBJECT X IDENTIFIED.
A name slowly appeared.
I read it.
And my entire body went cold.
Because the name belonged to someone who had been standing beside us all night.
Someone we had trusted.
Someone who knew exactly where we were.
The screen displayed:
TERESA BRADLEY.
Amy gasped.
I turned slowly toward my mother.
She was crying.
But she wasn't surprised.
She whispered:
“Your father finally told you.”
I stared at her.
“Told me what?”
Teresa looked at Amy.
Then at me.
And said the words that destroyed everything we thought we knew.
“I am Amy's biological father.”
The room went silent.
May you like
And somewhere above us, the cemetery gate slammed shut.
Someone had locked us underground.
