Chapter 1 — The Cameras Never Lie

Chapter 1 — The Cameras Never Lie
The elevator doors closed behind Marcus.
For three seconds, he remained frozen.
His hand was still wrapped around the place where Khloe's fingers had been moments earlier.
Then the doors began to descend.
“Wait.”
David Sterling's voice stopped him.
Marcus turned.
His uncle stood in the corridor, phone still in his hand.
“Don't go with her.”
Marcus frowned.
“She's my wife.”
“I know.”
“She needs me.”
“She needs doctors.”
David stepped closer.
“And she needs you to understand what happened here before you make another mistake.”
Marcus stared at him.
“What mistake?”
“Believing the first story you hear.”
The elevator doors opened again.
Marcus stepped out.
David pointed toward the security office.
“The footage is already being pulled.”
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“You think Isabella attacked Khloe.”
“I don't think.”
David's eyes hardened.
“I know what I saw.”
Inside the security control room, twelve monitors covered an entire wall.
Elaine Parker stood beside the head of hospital security.
The man inserted a keycard into the system.
“Floor thirty-two,” he said.
A timestamp appeared.
8:41:17 P.M.
The footage began.
Khloe entered the private lounge first.
She looked exhausted.
One hand rested protectively over her stomach.
She said something.
Isabella answered.
There was no sound on the first camera.
Then Isabella stepped closer.
Khloe backed away.
Marcus leaned forward.
“What are they saying?”
“Audio is on camera seven.”
The security officer switched screens.
The sound came through.
“You can't stay here,” Isabella said.
Khloe answered quietly.
“This is my husband's suite.”
“You're embarrassing him.”
“No. I'm his wife.”
Isabella laughed.
“You won't be for long.”
Marcus's face hardened.
David said nothing.
The footage continued.
Khloe turned toward the door.
Isabella grabbed her arm.
Khloe pulled away.
“Don't touch me.”
Isabella grabbed her again.
Harder.
Khloe stumbled.
Then Isabella shoved her.
Marcus's chair scraped backward.
“Stop.”
Nobody answered.
On screen, Khloe hit the edge of a marble table.
She cried out.
One hand immediately went to her abdomen.
Isabella stood over her.
Then she did something that made the room go silent.
She kicked the fallen chair toward Khloe.
Khloe recoiled.
Isabella leaned down.
“You should have listened.”
Marcus stood.
David caught his arm.
“Wait.”
“Let go.”
“Watch.”
The footage continued.
Isabella looked toward the camera.
For one brief second, her expression changed.
The tears disappeared.
The fear disappeared.
Her face became completely cold.
She reached down.
Picked up a crystal glass.
And smashed it against the floor beside Khloe.
Then she screamed.
“Help! Somebody help me!”
Marcus stared.
The footage showed the suite door opening.
Isabella immediately fell backward.
She began crying.
Exactly as they had found her.
Marcus slowly sat down.
His face had gone pale.
“She staged it.”
David nodded.
“She did.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Why?”
David didn't answer.
Elaine did.
“Because she wanted everyone to believe Khloe attacked her.”
The door opened.
A police detective entered.
“Mr. Thorne?”
Marcus stood.
“Yes.”
“Detective Aaron Miller.”
He showed his badge.
“We need to speak with you.”
“About Isabella?”
“About both women.”
Marcus glanced at David.
“What happened?”
The detective looked uncomfortable.
“Isabella has filed a formal complaint.”
Marcus's expression darkened.
“For what?”
“Assault.”
“Against Khloe?”
“Yes.”
Marcus almost laughed.
“She was lying on the floor.”
“I understand.”
“She was bleeding.”
“I understand.”
“She was pregnant.”
“I understand.”
“Then why are we having this conversation?”
The detective placed a tablet on the table.
“Because Isabella claims Khloe attacked her first.”
Marcus stared at the screen.
A statement was displayed.
I was afraid for my life.
Below it was Isabella's signature.
Marcus felt something cold move through his chest.
“She lied.”
“That is what the footage may establish.”
“May?”
Detective Miller looked at him.
“Mr. Thorne, security footage isn't automatically admissible simply because it exists.”
“Why not?”
“Chain of custody.”
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means the defense can argue that the recording was altered.”
David's eyes narrowed.
“Altered?”
The detective nodded.
“Isabella's attorney has already made that allegation.”
Marcus stared at him.
“She knew.”
“Yes.”
“She knew there were cameras.”
“Yes.”
“And she's already claiming they're fake?”
“Yes.”
David's expression became grim.
“Then this was planned.”
At 10:17 p.m., Isabella's attorney arrived.
He was an older man with silver hair and an expensive navy suit.
His name was Victor Lang.
He walked into the hospital like he owned the building.
“Mr. Thorne.”
Marcus didn't offer his hand.
“What do you want?”
“My client wishes to make a statement.”
“She can make it to the police.”
“She already has.”
“Then we're finished.”
Victor smiled.
“Not quite.”
He opened his briefcase.
“Ms. Rossi has provided evidence that the security footage was manipulated.”
Marcus stared.
“By whom?”
“Hospital security.”
David stepped forward.
“That is a serious accusation.”
Victor nodded.
“Which is why we're asking for an independent forensic examination.”
Elaine's face tightened.
“The system is encrypted.”
Victor smiled.
“Then you shouldn't have anything to fear.”
Marcus looked at him.
“You're trying to delay the investigation.”
“No.”
Victor closed the briefcase.
“We're trying to protect an innocent woman from being convicted based on fabricated evidence.”
Marcus took one step forward.
“You know she attacked my wife.”
Victor's expression didn't change.
“I know what my client says happened.”
“And you believe her?”
“I believe in due process.”
Marcus leaned closer.
“Then I hope you're ready for what due process finds.”
Victor smiled.
“So do I.”
He walked away.
David watched him disappear.
Then quietly said:
“That man doesn't represent Isabella because he believes she's innocent.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Then why?”
“Because someone is paying him to make sure she doesn't talk.”
At midnight, Marcus entered the obstetric emergency unit.
The doors opened.
He saw Khloe lying beneath white blankets.
Her face was pale.
An IV ran into her arm.
Machines monitored her heartbeat.
Marcus approached slowly.
Her eyes opened.
“Marcus?”
He took her hand.
“I'm here.”
“Is the baby…”
“The doctors say the baby is stable.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
She closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“I was so scared.”
Marcus kissed her forehead.
“I know.”
“I thought…”
Her voice broke.
“I thought I was going to lose our baby.”
Marcus sat beside her.
“You won't.”
She looked at him.
“Isabella said…”
He stopped.
“What?”
“She said you would believe her.”
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“I don't.”
Khloe studied his face.
“You saw the footage?”
“Yes.”
She swallowed.
“What did it show?”
“The truth.”
Khloe began crying.
Marcus leaned closer.
“She attacked you.”
Khloe nodded.
“I know.”
“And she tried to make it look like you attacked her.”
Khloe's eyes closed.
“I knew she would.”
Marcus froze.
“What do you mean?”
Khloe opened her eyes.
“She told me.”
“When?”
“Before she pushed me.”
“What did she say?”
Khloe hesitated.
“She said…”
“What?”
“She said, ‘By the time they check the cameras, you'll be the violent one.’”
Marcus stared at her.
Then something clicked.
“She knew.”
Khloe nodded.
“She knew exactly where the cameras were.”
At 1:03 a.m., the security officer called David.
“Sir.”
“What is it?”
“We found something.”
David immediately stood.
Marcus followed.
They returned to the security room.
The officer pulled up the footage again.
“This is camera twelve.”
The screen showed the hallway outside the private suite.
Isabella walked toward the suite.
She stopped.
Looked directly at the camera.
Then took out her phone.
She made a call.
The timestamp showed 8:32 p.m.
Nine minutes before the attack.
“Who did she call?” Marcus asked.
The officer enlarged the screen.
“Can't identify the number from the video.”
“Phone records?”
“We're requesting them.”
David stared.
“Play the next camera.”
The screen changed.
Isabella entered the elevator.
A man was waiting inside.
Marcus leaned closer.
The man was wearing a dark coat.
His face was partially obscured.
But Marcus recognized him.
His blood ran cold.
“No.”
David looked at him.
“Who is that?”
Marcus whispered:
“Ethan.”
David's expression changed.
“Your brother?”
Marcus nodded.
“My younger brother.”
Elaine looked between them.
“But Ethan is in London.”
Marcus stared at the screen.
“He was supposed to be.”
The next morning, Isabella made her move.
Every major news network received the same statement.
She claimed Khloe had attacked her.
She claimed she feared for her life.
She claimed the security footage had been manipulated.
And then she made one final accusation.
She claimed Khloe was deliberately trying to destroy Isabella's relationship with Marcus.
Within hours, social media exploded.
Photographs of Khloe appeared online.
Old arguments.
Private messages.
Personal information.
Someone had leaked everything.
Marcus stared at his phone.
“How did they get these?”
Elaine shook her head.
“Someone inside the family.”
David's expression hardened.
“Not necessarily.”
Marcus looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
David pointed toward one photograph.
“This was taken inside your home.”
Marcus's stomach tightened.
He recognized the room.
His bedroom.
The photograph showed Khloe asleep beside him.
It had been taken without their knowledge.
“Who had access?”
Marcus whispered:
“Only family.”
David stared at the screen.
“Then we're dealing with something much bigger than Isabella.”
That afternoon, forensic specialists arrived.
The original security server was disconnected from the hospital network.
Every file was copied.
Every timestamp was documented.
Every access attempt was recorded.
The defense had argued the footage could have been altered.
The forensic examiner spent six hours checking it.
At 6:42 p.m., she entered the conference room.
“The footage is authentic.”
Marcus stood.
“You're certain?”
“Yes.”
“Not edited?”
“No.”
“Not manipulated?”
“No.”
David exhaled.
“What about the metadata?”
“Untouched.”
“What about the audio?”
“Original.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
For the first time that day, he breathed.
Then the examiner added:
“But there's something else.”
Everyone looked at her.
“The system was accessed remotely.”
“When?”
“Eight minutes before the attack.”
Marcus's face hardened.
“By whom?”
She placed a report on the table.
“We traced the access key.”
David picked it up.
His expression changed.
“That's impossible.”
Marcus took the paper.
His heart stopped.
The access key belonged to a senior executive at Sterling Medical Group.
David's company.
Marcus looked at his uncle.
“Who has this authorization?”
David didn't answer.
“Uncle David.”
David's face had gone completely pale.
“Three people.”
“Who?”
“Me.”
“The chief security officer.”
“And…”
He stopped.
Marcus stared.
“And who?”
David whispered:
“Your mother.”
Silence.
Marcus couldn't move.
His mother had been dead for six years.
David looked at him.
“That access key shouldn't still be active.”
Marcus stared at the report.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
No one spoke.
Then a woman's voice whispered:
“You're looking in the wrong direction.”
Marcus froze.
“Who is this?”
A pause.
Then:
“If you want Khloe and the baby alive, stop investigating Isabella.”
The line went dead.
Marcus looked toward David.
David's expression was grim.
“Who was it?”
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
“I don't know.”
Then the hospital lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Every monitor in the security room went black.
And somewhere down the corridor—
an alarm began screaming.
Marcus ran.
Because Khloe was on that floor.
And suddenly he understood the real purpose of the attack.
Isabella hadn't been trying to hurt Khloe.
Not only.
She had been testing the hospital's security.
Testing the cameras.
Testing Marcus.
Testing everyone.
And whoever was behind her had just learned exactly how much they could get away with.
May you like
The cameras had told the truth.
But someone was already trying to make sure there would be no cameras left to tell the next one.
