Chapter 5 — The Sterling Bloodline

Chapter 5 — The Sterling Bloodline
The heart monitor screamed.
Marcus stood beside Khloe's bed while three doctors rushed around her.
“Her blood pressure is dropping.”
“Get another IV.”
“Prepare the neonatal team.”
Khloe's fingers searched blindly for Marcus.
He grabbed them.
“I'm here.”
Her eyes opened.
“Marcus…”
“I've got you.”
“I can't…”
“You don't have to talk.”
Her face tightened as another contraction passed through her.
Dr. Caldwell looked at the monitor.
“The baby's heart rate is recovering.”
Marcus barely breathed.
Then the numbers stabilized.
The room slowly became quiet.
Nathan removed his gloves.
“She's stable.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he simply stood there.
Then he looked at the screen.
“Someone accessed her file.”
Nathan nodded.
“We've locked the system.”
“Can they do it again?”
“Not without physical access.”
Marcus's expression hardened.
“Then someone inside this hospital is helping them.”
David stood near the doorway.
“I think it's worse than that.”
Marcus turned.
“What?”
David held the altered prenup in his hand.
“We need to talk.”
They went to a private conference room.
David closed the door.
Elaine remained outside.
Marcus sat across from his uncle.
“You said my father tried to destroy the Sterling Legacy Trust.”
“Yes.”
“And that my mother knew.”
“Yes.”
“And Vivian is supposedly my father's daughter.”
David nodded.
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“Then tell me everything.”
David stared at him.
“Everything?”
“No more half-truths.”
David lowered his eyes.
“You're going to hate your family after this.”
“I already do.”
David took a long breath.
“Then perhaps you're ready.”
“Your great-grandfather, Edward Sterling, built the original Sterling fortune.”
Marcus listened.
“He wasn't a doctor. He wasn't a scientist. He wasn't even particularly wealthy.”
“What was he?”
“A lawyer.”
David continued.
“He represented pharmaceutical companies during the 1950s. He discovered something.”
“What?”
“That corporations were willing to pay enormous amounts of money to keep certain information buried.”
Marcus frowned.
“Medical scandals?”
“Clinical trial failures. Patent theft. Bribery. Dangerous products.”
David opened an old file.
“Edward began collecting evidence.”
“Why?”
“At first, he wanted money.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Blackmail.”
“Yes.”
“He blackmailed companies.”
“Several.”
“And used the money to build Sterling.”
Marcus shook his head.
“That can't be the whole story.”
“It isn't.”
David opened another document.
“Edward eventually realized that blackmail alone wasn't enough. He wanted permanent control.”
“So he created the trust.”
“Yes.”
“The Legacy Trust.”
David nodded.
“But there was one problem.”
“What?”
“Edward had two children.”
Marcus stared.
“Your grandfather, Charles.”
“And Vivian.”
Marcus's expression changed.
“Vivian was his daughter.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“Charles was obedient.”
David looked at him.
“Vivian wasn't.”
Vivian discovered the truth when she was twenty-one.
She found the original blackmail records.
She discovered that much of the Sterling fortune came from extortion.
She wanted to expose everything.
“Why didn't she?”
“Because Edward threatened her.”
“With what?”
“Her younger brother.”
Marcus understood.
“Charles.”
“Yes.”
“Edward told her that if she went public, Charles would be destroyed.”
“So she stayed silent.”
“For years.”
David turned another page.
“Then Vivian met your father.”
Marcus froze.
“My father knew?”
“He discovered the same records.”
“When?”
“Shortly after he married your mother.”
Marcus stared.
“Then he and Vivian worked together.”
“Yes.”
“To expose the family.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
David looked away.
“They fell in love.”
Marcus's stomach tightened.
“What?”
“Your father and Vivian.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
“It happened before your mother married him.”
Marcus stood.
“My father loved my mother.”
“I believe he did.”
“Then why are you telling me this?”
“Because Vivian became pregnant.”
Silence.
Marcus stared at him.
“She was pregnant?”
“Yes.”
“With my father?”
David nodded.
Marcus sat down slowly.
“Isabella.”
David didn't answer.
Marcus whispered:
“Isabella is Vivian's daughter.”
“Yes.”
“And my father's daughter.”
“Yes.”
Marcus covered his face.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he looked up.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
“Because your grandfather ordered Vivian to disappear.”
“And Isabella?”
“She was taken away.”
“By whom?”
“Your grandfather's lawyers.”
Marcus stared.
“They separated mother and daughter.”
“Yes.”
“And my father knew?”
“He tried to find them.”
“What happened?”
David's voice became heavy.
“Your grandfather threatened him.”
“With what?”
“Your mother.”
Marcus froze.
“What did he do to her?”
“He arranged an accident.”
Marcus's blood ran cold.
“An accident?”
“Your mother survived.”
“And my father?”
“He gave up.”
Marcus shook his head.
“He abandoned Vivian.”
“No.”
David looked directly at him.
“Your father believed Vivian was dead.”
Marcus remembered the recording.
His father's voice.
You can't do this, Vivian.
He understood now.
His father had known she survived.
But perhaps too late.
Marcus returned to Khloe's room.
She was sleeping.
He sat beside her.
He looked at her stomach.
Their child.
A life that had somehow become the center of a war older than he was.
He whispered:
“You didn't ask for any of this.”
Khloe opened her eyes.
“Marcus?”
He looked at her.
“We need to talk.”
She saw his expression.
“What happened?”
“I know who Isabella is.”
Khloe slowly sat up.
“Who?”
“My half-sister.”
Khloe's eyes widened.
“What?”
“Her mother was Vivian.”
“The woman behind Isabella?”
“Yes.”
Khloe's hand moved toward her stomach.
“And her father?”
Marcus swallowed.
“My father.”
Khloe stared.
“So Isabella…”
“Is my half-sister.”
Neither spoke.
Then Khloe asked:
“Why does she want our baby?”
Marcus looked at her.
“Because our child is connected to the original Sterling bloodline.”
“How?”
He didn't know how to explain it.
Then David entered.
“I can.”
David placed an old leather book on the table.
“This belonged to Edward Sterling.”
He opened it.
Inside were handwritten names.
Generations of Sterling descendants.
Marcus's eyes moved down the page.
His grandfather.
His father.
Himself.
Then beneath his name was a blank line.
David pointed.
“That's where your child belongs.”
Marcus frowned.
“Why is the line blank?”
“Because the child hasn't been born.”
Khloe looked at the page.
“What does that have to do with Isabella?”
David turned several pages.
At the back was a section titled:
THE BLOODLINE PROVISION.
He read aloud.
“The controlling inheritance shall remain with the direct descendants of Edward Sterling, provided the heir possesses unbroken biological descent through the legitimate male line.”
Marcus frowned.
“That's outdated.”
“Yes.”
“Then how can it still matter?”
David looked at him.
“Because the trust was never properly dissolved.”
“What does that mean?”
“Legally, the provision remains enforceable.”
Khloe's face tightened.
“So our baby…”
“Is the next legitimate direct descendant.”
“And Isabella?”
David looked at Marcus.
“She is a direct descendant too.”
Marcus frowned.
“Then why doesn't she inherit?”
“Because Vivian's branch was legally erased.”
Marcus stared.
“Erased?”
“Yes.”
“By my grandfather?”
“Yes.”
“So Isabella's existence was hidden.”
“Exactly.”
David closed the book.
“Your child is the first legitimate Sterling heir born after Vivian's branch was erased.”
Khloe whispered:
“That's why they want the baby gone.”
David nodded.
“Not only because of the money.”
“Then what?”
“The child could legally restore Vivian's branch.”
Marcus stared.
“And Isabella could become recognized.”
“Yes.”
“Then why would she want the baby dead?”
David looked at him.
“Because Vivian has convinced her that the baby is the last thing preventing her from controlling everything.”
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“She's wrong.”
“Yes.”
“Unless someone altered the documents.”
David nodded.
“That is what they have been doing.”
Later that evening, Marcus found an old photograph.
It showed his father standing beside a young woman.
Vivian.
She was smiling.
Between them was a small child.
A little girl.
Marcus stared.
“Isabella.”
David nodded.
Marcus turned the photograph over.
There was writing on the back.
His father's handwriting.
I will find you again. I promise.
Marcus's throat tightened.
Then he saw another sentence.
If I fail, the child will know the truth.
He looked at David.
“What child?”
David stared at the photograph.
“I don't know.”
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“You said you knew everything.”
“I said I knew the history.”
“Then explain this.”
David couldn't.
Marcus turned the photograph over again.
There was a date.
Twenty-nine years earlier.
Marcus's birth certificate showed he had been born one year later.
The little girl in the photograph wasn't Isabella's current age.
She would have been older.
Marcus suddenly felt something was wrong.
“David.”
“Yes?”
“How old is Isabella?”
“Twenty-nine.”
Marcus stared at the photograph.
The child looked approximately six.
The date made sense.
But then he noticed something else.
The girl was wearing a necklace.
A tiny silver pendant.
A three-pointed star.
Marcus had seen it before.
On Isabella.
He remembered it from the night of the attack.
She had worn it around her neck.
He had assumed it was jewelry.
Now he understood.
It was a family seal.
At midnight, Marcus went back to the security office.
He pulled up every image of Isabella.
The pendant was visible in fourteen photographs.
Then he searched the Sterling archives.
The same symbol appeared in an old document.
Bloodline Identification Seal.
Only direct descendants could possess it.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Then Elaine entered.
“You're still awake.”
“I found something.”
“What?”
“Isabella has the Sterling seal.”
Elaine frowned.
“So?”
“It means she's legally recognized as family.”
Elaine's face changed.
“Who gave it to her?”
Marcus shook his head.
“I don't know.”
They searched.
One record appeared.
The seal had been issued twenty-nine years earlier.
Recipient:
Isabella Thorne.
Marcus stared.
“Thorne.”
Elaine looked at him.
“That's your family name.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she become Rossi?”
Marcus didn't answer.
A second document appeared.
It showed a legal name change.
Isabella Thorne → Isabella Rossi.
Reason:
Protection of minor from family dispute.
Marcus felt sick.
“Someone changed her identity.”
Elaine nodded.
“And someone protected her.”
Marcus stared at the signature.
His father's.
Again.
His father had changed Isabella's name.
Hidden her.
Protected her.
Then publicly pretended she didn't exist.
But why?
The answer came at 2:16 a.m.
A message appeared on Marcus's phone.
No number.
Just a video.
He pressed play.
Vivian appeared.
Older than in the photographs.
But unmistakable.
“Marcus.”
He stared.
“If you're seeing this, you've learned about Isabella.”
She paused.
“I know what you're thinking.”
Marcus watched silently.
“You think she is your enemy.”
Vivian shook her head.
“She isn't.”
“She is my daughter.”
A pause.
“And she has been manipulated her entire life.”
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“By whom?”
Vivian leaned toward the camera.
“By your mother.”
Marcus froze.
Vivian continued.
“Your mother knew the truth about Isabella.”
“She knew who her father was.”
“She knew who her mother was.”
“And she knew about the child you would eventually have.”
Marcus stopped breathing.
Vivian's voice softened.
“Your mother wasn't protecting you.”
“She was protecting the Sterling secret.”
The video ended.
Marcus stared at the black screen.
Then David entered.
Marcus turned.
“Tell me my mother was lying.”
David said nothing.
“Tell me.”
David's eyes filled with tears.
“She wasn't.”
Marcus felt betrayed.
“What did she do?”
David looked at him.
“She signed the order.”
“What order?”
“To erase Vivian's bloodline from the family records.”
Marcus stared.
“And the unborn child?”
David hesitated.
“Your mother also signed a document concerning the next heir.”
“What document?”
David looked down.
“The document that would determine whether your child inherited everything.”
Marcus's voice became cold.
“Where is it?”
David looked at him.
“Your mother hid it.”
“Where?”
David whispered:
“In the place where your father died.”
Marcus froze.
His father's death.
The one event nobody in the family would discuss.
David continued:
“And if we're right…”
He looked toward the hospital room where Khloe slept.
“…the document is the reason someone has been trying to kill your baby.”
Marcus stared at the corridor.
The war was no longer about Isabella.
It was no longer about Vivian.
It was no longer even about the Sterling fortune.
It was about a document written before Marcus understood what his family truly was.
And somewhere in the room where his father had died—
May you like
was the answer to whether his unborn child would inherit the Sterling empire…
or become the final victim of it.
