Chapter 11 — Isabella's Final Bargain

Chapter 11 — Isabella's Final Bargain

By sunrise, the hospital had become a fortress.

Security officers stood at every entrance.

Elevators required authorization.

The underground archive had been sealed.

And Room 317 was surrounded by police.

But Marcus knew none of it mattered.

Someone had infiltrated the hospital.

Someone had kidnapped Dr. Caldwell.

Someone had found Elena.

And his mother—alive after all these years—had called him just long enough to warn him that Isabella was coming.

At 7:13 a.m., Marcus's phone rang.

This time, he knew exactly who it was.

Isabella.

He answered.

“You have something I want,” she said.

Marcus's expression hardened.

“You mean Khloe.”

“No.”

Her voice was calm.

“I mean her claim.”

Marcus looked toward Khloe's room.

She was asleep.

“You're not getting anything.”

Isabella laughed softly.

“Then you should prepare yourself.”

“For what?”

“Losing everything.”

Marcus stood.

“Try me.”

“I already have.”

A pause.

Then Isabella said:

“Check your bank accounts.”

Marcus opened his banking application.

His face changed.

Every personal account showed the same message.

ACCOUNT RESTRICTED.

He tried another.

The same.

His corporate account.

Frozen.

His investment portfolio.

Frozen.

His credit cards.

Suspended.

Marcus stared.

“What did you do?”

“I told you.”

Isabella's voice remained frighteningly calm.

“I can destroy you.”

“You can't freeze my accounts.”

“I don't have to.”

“Then who did?”

“You'll find out.”

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“You're bluffing.”

“Am I?”

A second message appeared.

His company's board had called an emergency meeting.

Then another.

A federal tax investigation.

Then another.

A lawsuit alleging fraudulent inheritance transfers.

Marcus's hands tightened around the phone.

Isabella spoke again.

“Your reputation is already collapsing.”

“What do you want?”

“Khloe's claim.”

“You'll never get it.”

“Then I'll take it.”

“How?”

“Through the courts.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You don't have the evidence.”

“I don't need evidence.”

“What?”

“I have witnesses.”

His expression changed.

“Who?”

“People who will testify that Khloe is mentally unstable.”

Marcus went still.

“That's a lie.”

“I know.”

“But courts don't always care about truth.”

Khloe woke twenty minutes later.

Marcus didn't tell her immediately.

He waited until David arrived.

“What happened?” David asked.

Marcus showed him the messages.

David's expression hardened.

“She's making her move.”

“What do we do?”

“Fight.”

Marcus shook his head.

“She has already frozen my accounts.”

David looked at the screen.

“This isn't Isabella.”

Marcus looked up.

“What?”

“Isabella doesn't have this kind of access.”

“Then who?”

David hesitated.

“Someone behind her.”

Marcus remembered Alexander Vale.

“Vale.”

David nodded.

“Possibly.”

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Then why is Isabella calling me?”

“Because she's the face.”

Marcus looked at Khloe.

“And Khloe is the target.”

David nodded.

“Exactly.”

An hour later, Isabella released the first video.

It appeared on every major news network.

Isabella stood outside the courthouse.

Her face was bruised.

Her voice trembled.

“I have spent years trying to protect the Sterling family.”

Marcus watched in disbelief.

She continued.

“I was attacked.”

“Threatened.”

“Manipulated.”

“And now I am being blamed for crimes I did not commit.”

Then she looked directly into the camera.

“Khloe Thorne is not the rightful heir.”

The statement exploded across the internet.

Marcus turned off the television.

“She knows exactly what she's doing.”

David nodded.

“She wants public opinion.”

“Why?”

“Because once the public believes Khloe is an impostor, the courts will be pressured to investigate.”

Marcus stared at him.

“And while they investigate?”

“The trust is frozen.”

Marcus understood.

“And if the trust is frozen, no one can access it.”

David nodded.

“Except Isabella.”

Marcus frowned.

“How?”

“Emergency beneficiary status.”

Marcus's face hardened.

“So she wants Khloe to surrender voluntarily.”

“Yes.”

“Why voluntarily?”

“Because that would make it almost impossible to challenge later.”

That afternoon, Isabella's attorney arrived.

He carried a single document.

“Mrs. Thorne has forty-eight hours.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Forty-eight hours for what?”

“For Khloe to sign a voluntary renunciation of her claim.”

“And if she refuses?”

The attorney placed another folder on the table.

“Then these become public.”

Marcus opened it.

His face changed.

Photographs.

Bank transfers.

Private medical records.

Old family documents.

Some were authentic.

Others were clearly fabricated.

But anyone looking at them would believe the story.

“What is this?”

“Evidence.”

“Of what?”

“Financial misconduct.”

Marcus looked at David.

“This is fake.”

David nodded.

“Most of it.”

“Most?”

“The bank transfers are real.”

Marcus stared.

“Whose?”

“Yours.”

Marcus looked confused.

“I never made those.”

David pointed to the dates.

“They occurred while you were unconscious after your accident.”

Marcus remembered.

He had been twenty-eight.

A three-week hospitalization.

“Who had access to my accounts?”

David's expression darkened.

“Your mother.”

Marcus froze.

The attorney smiled.

“Mrs. Thorne has until noon tomorrow.”

Marcus stood.

“She won't sign.”

The attorney turned toward the door.

“She will.”

“Why?”

The attorney looked back.

“Because Isabella has something else.”

Marcus's voice became cold.

“What?”

“She has your mother's medical records.”

Marcus froze.

“She's threatening my mother?”

“No.”

The attorney smiled.

“She is threatening to reveal where your mother has been hiding.”

Khloe sat silently after the attorney left.

Marcus knelt beside her.

“You don't have to do this.”

She looked at him.

“If I don't sign, they destroy you.”

“We can fight.”

“What if they hurt you?”

“They won't.”

“What if they hurt the baby?”

Marcus went quiet.

Khloe placed a hand over her stomach.

“They want me to surrender.”

“Yes.”

“Then maybe I should.”

“No.”

“Marcus—”

“No.”

He took her hands.

“Listen to me.”

She looked into his eyes.

“I didn't marry you for money.”

“I know.”

“I don't care about the trust.”

“I know.”

“Then let me give it to them.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Because that's exactly what they want.”

Khloe began crying.

“What if this is the only way to save you?”

Marcus wiped her tears.

“Then we find another way.”

At midnight, Elena disappeared.

The police found her room empty.

No broken locks.

No blood.

No signs of struggle.

Just one message written on the mirror:

SHE CHOSE TO GO.

Marcus didn't believe it.

He called the detective.

“Check every camera.”

“We are.”

“Every entrance.”

“Yes.”

“Every exit.”

“Yes.”

Marcus looked at the message.

Then he noticed something.

A tiny symbol beneath the words.

A circle.

With three lines through it.

He recognized it.

The same symbol appeared on Alexander Vale's ring.

Marcus immediately called him.

Vale answered.

“You're running out of time.”

“Where is Elena?”

Silence.

“Where is she?”

“She is safe.”

“Where?”

“I can't tell you.”

Marcus's voice hardened.

“If you know where she is, tell me.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because she doesn't trust you.”

Marcus froze.

“Why wouldn't she trust me?”

Vale sighed.

“Because she knows what your mother did.”

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“What did my mother do?”

“She didn't just hide Isabella's identity.”

“What else?”

“She arranged Khloe's pregnancy.”

Marcus went silent.

Vale continued.

“Your mother selected Khloe years before she met you.”

Marcus looked toward Khloe.

“Why?”

“To preserve the Sterling bloodline.”

“Then why did Isabella try to stop her?”

“Because Isabella discovered the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That your mother planned to transfer the entire fortune to Khloe's child.”

Marcus felt sick.

“And Isabella?”

“She was going to receive nothing.”

“So she became desperate.”

“Yes.”

Marcus stared at the wall.

“Where is she now?”

“Coming for Khloe.”

At 11:57 p.m., the hospital alarms sounded.

Every elevator stopped.

The lights flickered.

Security officers rushed into the corridor.

Marcus immediately ran toward Khloe.

“Stay behind me.”

She nodded.

Then the door opened.

Isabella walked inside.

No guards.

No lawyers.

No disguise.

Just Isabella.

She looked directly at Khloe.

“I came to give you one final chance.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Leave.”

Isabella ignored him.

She placed a document on the table.

“Sign this.”

Khloe stared.

“What is it?”

“Your renunciation.”

“And if I don't?”

Isabella smiled.

“Then I destroy Marcus.”

Marcus laughed.

“You already tried.”

“No.”

Isabella's expression changed.

“You haven't seen anything yet.”

She pulled out her phone.

A video began playing.

Marcus watched.

His blood ran cold.

It showed him entering a private bank.

A voice could be heard.

His voice.

“I authorize the transfer.”

Marcus stared.

“That isn't me.”

“It sounds like you.”

“It's fabricated.”

“Prove it.”

She stopped the video.

Then she showed him another.

His signature.

His fingerprints.

His face.

All apparently authorizing millions of dollars in transfers.

Marcus's face hardened.

“You've been building this for years.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your family destroyed mine.”

Marcus stared.

“What did my family do?”

Isabella looked at Khloe.

“Ask her.”

Khloe frowned.

“I don't know.”

Isabella laughed bitterly.

“Your mother does.”

Marcus's phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

“Marcus.”

His heart stopped.

“Mom?”

“Don't let Khloe sign.”

“Where are you?”

“You can't save me.”

“Tell me where you are.”

“Listen to me.”

Her voice trembled.

“Isabella is lying.”

Marcus stared at Isabella.

“About what?”

“About the baby.”

Khloe looked up.

Marcus's heart pounded.

“What about the baby?”

His mother's voice dropped to a whisper.

“The DNA file was altered.”

Marcus froze.

“What?”

“The child isn't the Sterling heir.”

Isabella suddenly lunged toward the phone.

Marcus pulled it away.

“Mom!”

The call ended.

Isabella stood completely still.

For the first time, genuine fear crossed her face.

Marcus saw it.

“What did she mean?”

Isabella didn't answer.

Khloe whispered:

“Marcus…”

He turned.

“She's hiding something.”

Isabella looked at Khloe.

Then she smiled.

“Finally.”

Marcus frowned.

“What?”

Isabella's eyes filled with tears.

“Now you're asking the right question.”

She picked up the document.

“I don't want your fortune.”

Marcus stared.

“I want the truth.”

“What truth?”

Isabella's voice broke.

“Who your father really was.”

Silence.

Marcus felt the room become colder.

“You mean Edward?”

Isabella shook her head.

“No.”

She looked directly at him.

“Edward wasn't your biological father.”

Marcus couldn't breathe.

Khloe covered her mouth.

Isabella continued:

“And the DNA file proves it.”

Marcus stared at her.

“You're lying.”

“Am I?”

She placed one final document on the table.

Marcus picked it up.

The first line read:

PATERNITY EXCLUSION — MARCUS THORNE.

His hands began shaking.

Below it was a second name.

The alleged biological father.

Marcus read it.

And everything inside him seemed to collapse.

The name belonged to a man he had trusted his entire life.

A man who had stood beside his family.

A man who knew every secret.

A man who had been helping them uncover the conspiracy.

Alexander Vale.

Marcus looked up.

Isabella whispered:

“Now you understand why he bought my silence.”

The room went completely quiet.

Then Khloe looked at the document.

Her face went pale.

“If that's true…”

Marcus turned toward her.

“What?”

Khloe's voice trembled.

“Then the baby…”

She couldn't finish.

Isabella did.

“The baby isn't just part of the Sterling bloodline.”

She looked at Marcus.

“It's also Alexander Vale's bloodline.”

Marcus stared at her.

And suddenly, the entire conspiracy became something far more dangerous than an inheritance battle.

May you like

It was a war between two bloodlines.

And his unborn child was standing at the center of both.
