CHAPTER 10 — THE FALL BEGINS

CHAPTER 10 — THE FALL BEGINS
By sunrise, the Vance family name was everywhere.
Television screens.
News websites.
Social media.
Business channels.
Every headline carried the same photograph.
Victoria Ross leaving the Vance estate with her face hidden behind dark sunglasses.
Beneath it were three words:
THE PERFECT FIANCÉE EXPOSED.
Clara watched the coverage without saying a word.
On the table in front of her were three folders.
Bank transfers.
Forged documents.
And the recording.
Everything Victoria had spent three years hiding was now sitting in Clara's hands.
Daniel stood behind her.
“We can release everything.”
Clara shook her head.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because Victoria isn't the only person who needs to fall.”
Daniel frowned.
Clara looked at him.
“If we release everything now, Evelyn will disappear.”
He understood immediately.
“So we let Victoria think she's the target.”
“Yes.”
“And while everyone watches her…”
“We find the person behind her.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
For the first time, they were fighting on the same side.
But neither of them realized how quickly the world was about to turn against Victoria.
THE FIRST LEAK
At 8:03 a.m., an anonymous file appeared online.
It was only thirty-seven seconds long.
Victoria's voice.
Clear.
Unmistakable.
“I don't want to do this.”
Then Evelyn's voice:
“Your brother dies if you refuse.”
The recording ended.
Within ten minutes, it had been viewed millions of times.
Within twenty minutes, reporters were outside Victoria's apartment.
Within an hour, every major news channel was discussing her.
WAS VICTORIA ROSS PART OF A CONSPIRACY TO CONTROL THE VANCE TRUST?
Victoria watched the coverage from her bedroom.
Her hands shook.
“No.”
She called her lawyer.
No answer.
She called her father.
Disconnected.
Her closest friend.
Blocked.
Her financial adviser.
Unavailable.
Then her phone began vibrating repeatedly.
Messages.
Hundreds of them.
How could you do this?
You lied to everyone.
You used Daniel.
You're disgusting.
Victoria dropped the phone.
For the first time in three years—
she was completely alone.
THE FIRST PERSON TO LEAVE
At noon, Daniel's engagement announcement was removed from every Vance family website.
The official statement was only one sentence:
The Vance family has terminated all personal and financial associations with Victoria Ross.
Victoria stared at the screen.
“They're abandoning me.”
Her assistant lowered her eyes.
“I've been instructed to leave.”
Victoria looked at her.
“You're leaving too?”
“Yes.”
“After everything I've done for you?”
The woman hesitated.
“I was employed by you.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
The assistant placed an envelope on the table.
“Your access cards.”
Victoria didn't move.
“Leave.”
The woman walked away.
The door closed.
Victoria sat alone in the enormous apartment Daniel had once promised would become their home.
Now it belonged to the bank.
Her accounts were frozen.
Her company shares were suspended.
Her social invitations disappeared.
And by evening—
her name had become poison.
THE PRESS CONFERENCE
At six o'clock, Victoria appeared before the cameras.
She wore a black suit.
No diamonds.
No stylist.
No assistant.
For once, she looked exactly like what she was.
A frightened woman.
Reporters shouted questions.
“Did you manipulate Daniel Vance?”
“Did you participate in the trust fraud?”
“Did you threaten Clara?”
“Did you know about the forged documents?”
Victoria stepped toward the microphone.
“I did not do everything you think I did.”
The reporters erupted.
“Then what did you do?”
Victoria looked directly into the cameras.
“I lied.”
Silence.
“I lied to Daniel.”
“I lied to Clara.”
“I lied to the Vance family.”
“But I was not the person who created this plan.”
A reporter shouted:
“Then who did?”
Victoria hesitated.
She thought of her brother.
The photograph.
The threats.
Evelyn's voice.
Then she said:
“Evelyn Vance.”
The crowd exploded.
CLARA WATCHES
Clara watched the press conference from the Vance library.
Daniel stood beside her.
“She said Mother's name.”
“Yes.”
“Will that be enough?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Victoria has no evidence.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Then why let her speak?”
Clara smiled faintly.
“Because she's going to lead us to it.”
Daniel frowned.
“How?”
Clara pointed at the television.
“Watch her hands.”
Victoria was gripping the podium.
Her right thumb kept rubbing against her index finger.
A nervous habit.
Clara recognized it.
“She knows something.”
Daniel nodded.
“Something she's afraid to say.”
“Exactly.”
Then Victoria suddenly looked directly into the camera.
For one second—
her eyes met Clara's.
And Clara understood.
Victoria wasn't speaking to the reporters.
She was speaking to her.
THE MESSAGE
Thirty minutes later, Clara received a text.
Unknown number.
YOU WERE RIGHT.
Another message.
I HAVE THE ORIGINAL ACCOUNT RECORDS.
Then:
BUT I CAN'T GIVE THEM TO YOU.
Clara typed:
Why?
The answer arrived:
Because my brother is still alive.
Clara's heart tightened.
She knew immediately.
Victoria.
Clara replied:
Where is he?
No answer.
Then:
Meet me alone.
Daniel saw the message.
“No.”
Clara looked at him.
“I have to go.”
“It's a trap.”
“Maybe.”
“Then I'm coming.”
“No.”
“Clara.”
“If Victoria sees you, she'll run.”
Daniel clenched his jaw.
“You're trusting her?”
“No.”
Clara stood.
“I'm trusting her fear.”
THE PARKING GARAGE
The meeting took place beneath an abandoned office building.
Victoria stood beside a black car.
She looked exhausted.
“You came.”
Clara stopped several feet away.
“Where is your brother?”
Victoria looked down.
“I don't know.”
Clara's expression hardened.
“Then why did you ask me to come?”
“Because I found something.”
She opened the car trunk.
Inside were several boxes.
Documents.
Bank statements.
Photographs.
Hard drives.
Clara stared.
“How did you get these?”
“I stole them.”
“From Evelyn?”
“Yes.”
Victoria picked up a folder.
“She kept copies of everything.”
Clara opened it.
Her eyes widened.
Transfers.
Millions.
Billions.
Companies Clara had never heard of.
Accounts in Switzerland.
Singapore.
The Cayman Islands.
But one name appeared repeatedly.
VANCE LEGACY HOLDINGS.
Clara frowned.
“This is the company that supposedly owns the trust.”
Victoria nodded.
“It's fake.”
“What?”
“The company doesn't legally exist.”
Clara looked at her.
“Then where did the money go?”
Victoria whispered:
“Someone has been moving it into a private foundation.”
“Whose?”
Victoria looked terrified.
“I don't know.”
Clara turned another page.
Then stopped.
A signature appeared at the bottom.
ROBERT HALE.
Clara's stomach dropped.
“The auditor.”
Victoria nodded.
“He's been moving the money.”
Clara shook her head.
“Robert worked for my family for thirty years.”
Victoria replied:
“Exactly.”
THE SECOND SHOCK
Clara continued reading.
Then she found something even worse.
A payment authorization.
Date:
Three years earlier.
Amount:
$84,000,000.
Recipient:
R. HALE PRIVATE FOUNDATION.
Authorized by:
DANIEL VANCE.
Clara's face went pale.
She looked at Victoria.
“Daniel signed this.”
Victoria nodded.
“He didn't know what he was signing.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I watched them put the document in front of him.”
Clara stared at the signature.
Her brother had signed away eighty-four million dollars.
And never known where it went.
Then she saw the final line.
BENEFICIARY: CLARA VANCE.
She froze.
“What?”
Victoria whispered:
“The money wasn't stolen from you.”
Clara looked up.
“It was transferred into your name.”
THE MONEY WAS NEVER GONE
For years, Clara had believed the trust had been robbed.
She had believed her family fortune had been dismantled.
She had watched assets disappear.
But now she understood.
The money hadn't vanished.
It had been hidden.
Protected.
Moved into accounts no one could trace.
Accounts controlled by a foundation.
A foundation with one beneficiary.
Her.
Clara's hands trembled.
“Why would they do this?”
Victoria answered:
“To make you believe you had lost everything.”
Clara stared.
“The money was never meant to disappear.”
“No.”
“It was meant to be invisible.”
“Yes.”
“Until what?”
Victoria hesitated.
“Until you were ready to claim it.”
Clara's eyes narrowed.
“Who was protecting it?”
Victoria whispered:
“I think your father.”
THE LAST THING VICTORIA HAD
Victoria reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“This is the last thing.”
Clara took it.
Inside was a photograph.
Her father.
Richard Vance.
Standing beside a much younger Evelyn.
And between them—
a newborn baby.
Clara stared.
“Who is that?”
Victoria looked away.
“I don't know.”
Clara turned the photograph over.
A date.
A hospital.
And one sentence handwritten by Richard.
MY DAUGHTER HAS A BROTHER SHE WAS NEVER TOLD ABOUT.
Clara's breathing stopped.
“Daniel?”
Victoria shook her head.
“No.”
Clara stared at the baby.
“Then who?”
Victoria whispered:
“That's what Evelyn has been hiding.”
VICTORIA'S CONFESSION
Clara lowered the photograph.
“Tell me everything.”
Victoria looked exhausted.
“I never wanted Daniel's money.”
Clara remained silent.
“I wanted my brother back.”
“You still betrayed me.”
“Yes.”
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
“You helped them.”
“Yes.”
“You hurt Daniel.”
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
“Then why should I help you?”
Victoria looked at her.
“Because I'm not asking you to forgive me.”
“Then what?”
“I'm asking you to help me stop her.”
Clara studied her.
“For three years, you were Evelyn's weapon.”
“I know.”
“Now you want to be mine?”
“No.”
Victoria shook her head.
“I want to be the person who finally stops running.”
Clara didn't answer.
Victoria continued:
“I know where Evelyn keeps the original trust ledger.”
Clara's eyes narrowed.
“Where?”
Victoria looked toward the dark garage.
“Under the old Vance chapel.”
Clara froze.
“The family chapel?”
“Yes.”
“Why there?”
“Because Evelyn believes no one will search a grave for a living person's secret.”
THE ARREST
Before Clara could respond—
sirens filled the garage.
Victoria turned.
“What?”
Police vehicles surrounded the building.
Clara stared at her.
“You called them?”
“No.”
Then a voice came through the loudspeaker.
“Victoria Ross, step away from the vehicle.”
Victoria looked terrified.
“I didn't call them.”
Clara understood.
Someone had been tracking them.
“Move.”
“What?”
“Now.”
They ran.
Police entered from both sides.
Victoria grabbed Clara's hand.
They rushed through a side corridor.
A gunshot echoed.
Clara ducked.
Victoria screamed.
They reached an emergency exit.
Outside, rain poured across the street.
Victoria looked back.
“They know.”
“Who?”
“Everyone.”
THE FALL
By midnight, Victoria had been arrested.
Not for murder.
Not yet.
But for fraud, conspiracy, financial misconduct, and obstruction.
The media called it:
THE FALL OF THE PERFECT FIANCÉE.
Her family's properties were seized.
Her accounts were frozen.
Her engagement was officially terminated.
Her name disappeared from charity boards.
The woman who had once entered every room beneath a storm of cameras now sat alone in a gray interrogation room.
But Clara knew something the public didn't.
Victoria's fall was only the beginning.
Because the evidence she had handed Clara did something far more dangerous than destroy Victoria.
It connected the missing money to the Vance trust.
It connected Robert Hale to the hidden accounts.
It connected Daniel's signature to the transfer.
And most importantly—
it proved that the fortune everyone believed had been stolen was still alive.
Hidden.
Waiting.
For Clara.
THE MESSAGE FROM EVELYN
At 2:17 a.m., Clara's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
No one spoke.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“You're becoming difficult.”
Clara's eyes hardened.
“You should have killed me when you had the chance.”
Evelyn laughed softly.
“I never wanted you dead.”
“Then what do you want?”
“I want you to understand.”
“Understand what?”
“That Victoria was never your enemy.”
Clara went silent.
Evelyn continued:
“Neither was Daniel.”
Clara's heart tightened.
“Then who was?”
A long pause.
Then Evelyn said:
“Your father.”
Clara froze.
“What?”
“He lied to you.”
“My father protected me.”
“No.”
Evelyn's voice became colder.
“He protected the real heir.”
Clara gripped the phone.
“Who is the real heir?”
Evelyn laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
“Tell me.”
“You have been looking for a missing person.”
Clara's blood ran cold.
Evelyn whispered:
“You should have been looking for the person standing beside you.”
The call ended.
Clara slowly lowered the phone.
Daniel stood across the room.
“Who was it?”
Clara looked at him.
For the first time—
she didn't know whether she could trust her own brother.
Then her phone vibrated again.
A photograph appeared.
Daniel.
Taken from outside the window.
Standing beside her.
The message underneath contained only four words:
HE KNOWS EVERYTHING, CLARA.
Clara looked at Daniel.
He noticed her expression.
“What happened?”
She said nothing.
Because somewhere deep inside, a terrible possibility had begun to take shape.
Victoria had fallen.
May you like
But the person who had truly won—
might have been Daniel all along.
