CHAPTER 9 — THE NIGHT OF THE RECORDING

CHAPTER 9 — THE NIGHT OF THE RECORDING

“Hello, Clara.”

Her mother's voice filled the underground room.

Clara stopped breathing.

For twelve years, she had imagined what she would say if she ever heard Evelyn Vance's voice again.

She had imagined anger.

Questions.

Accusations.

She had imagined screaming.

Instead, nothing came.

Only silence.

Daniel stared at the hidden speaker.

“Mother?”

A soft laugh echoed through the room.

“You always were the emotional one, Daniel.”

His face turned pale.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“That is the wrong question.”

Clara finally found her voice.

“No.”

Her hands curled into fists.

“It is exactly the right question.”

The speaker remained silent.

Then Evelyn answered.

“I survived because I understood something your father never did.”

“What?”

“People only have power over you when they know you are alive.”

Clara felt a chill.

“You faked your death.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated the trust.”

“Yes.”

“You used Victoria.”

“Yes.”

“You forged my signature.”

A pause.

“Yes.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why?”

Evelyn's answer was immediate.

“Because you were both going to destroy everything I built.”

Clara stared at the speaker.

“You didn't build it.”

“No?”

“You inherited it.”

Another soft laugh.

“You sound like your father.”

Clara's expression hardened.

“Good.”

THE RECORDING

The speaker clicked.

A file began playing.

Static.

Then voices.

Clara recognized herself immediately.

Younger.

Confused.

Weak.

The recording was from twelve years earlier.

The night she had signed the succession document.

Her own voice whispered:

“Why do I feel sick?”

Evelyn answered:

“You haven't eaten enough.”

Clara's stomach turned.

She remembered that room.

The headache.

The dizziness.

The strange heaviness in her limbs.

But she had never remembered hearing the conversation that followed.

Then came Daniel's younger voice.

“Mom, should we call a doctor?”

“No.”

Evelyn's voice was calm.

“She'll be fine.”

Clara stared at Daniel.

He looked horrified.

“I don't remember this.”

“I do.”

Clara looked at him.

“You were there.”

“I was seventeen.”

“You were still there.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

Clara's younger voice:

“What am I signing?”

Evelyn:

“Something that protects Daniel.”

Clara:

“Why?”

“Because one day he will need it.”

Then another voice entered.

A man's voice.

Dr. Samuel Cross.

“You should hurry.”

Clara froze.

The recording continued.

Evelyn:

“Is she ready?”

Cross:

“She'll remember enough to trust you.”

Daniel looked at Clara.

“What does that mean?”

Clara's face had gone white.

She didn't answer.

The recording continued.

Evelyn:

“Once she signs, the trust will recognize Daniel as the protected heir.”

Cross:

“And if she refuses?”

Evelyn's voice became colder.

“She won't.”

Clara's hands trembled.

Then she heard herself ask:

“What happens if Daniel doesn't want it?”

Silence.

Evelyn answered:

“Then we'll make him want it.”

THE PLAN

The recording continued.

A second man's voice appeared.

Richard.

Clara's father.

She hadn't heard his voice in years.

“You're going too far.”

Evelyn answered:

“You've been saying that for twelve years.”

“Leave Clara out of this.”

“No.”

“She is innocent.”

“She is dangerous.”

“She is your daughter.”

“She is the only person standing between us and control of the trust.”

Richard's voice became angry.

“You don't control the trust.”

“Not yet.”

“You never will.”

A chair scraped across the floor.

Then came a sound like a slap.

Daniel flinched.

Clara covered her mouth.

Richard whispered:

“You're insane.”

Evelyn answered:

“No.”

Her voice was terrifyingly calm.

“I'm prepared.”

THE TRUE TARGET

The recording continued.

Richard asked:

“What do you plan to do with Clara?”

Evelyn replied:

“Destroy her credibility.”

Richard:

“She is a Vance.”

“Exactly.”

“How?”

“Make everyone believe she is unstable.”

Clara's eyes widened.

Daniel looked at her.

“She planned it.”

The recording continued.

“She'll lose control of the trust.”

Richard:

“Not if I stop you.”

Evelyn:

“You won't.”

“Why?”

“Because tomorrow, you'll be accused of embezzlement.”

Silence.

Richard sounded stunned.

“You wouldn't.”

“I already have.”

Daniel whispered:

“She framed Father.”

Clara nodded.

The recording continued.

“By morning, the board will believe you stole from the family.”

Richard's voice shook.

“You're destroying your own husband.”

Evelyn answered:

“You stopped being useful years ago.”

THE FIRST BETRAYAL

Then came the voice Clara least expected.

Nathan.

Her uncle.

“I can't do this.”

Evelyn:

“You already did.”

Nathan:

“I moved the money because you told me it was temporary.”

“It was.”

“You lied.”

“I changed my mind.”

“You'll destroy everyone.”

Evelyn laughed.

“Everyone except the person who deserves to inherit.”

Nathan:

“Who?”

Evelyn:

“You'll know when the time comes.”

Clara stared.

Nathan had been involved.

But he had not been the mastermind.

He had tried to stop her.

The recording continued.

Nathan:

“What about Clara?”

Evelyn:

“She will sign.”

“And if she doesn't?”

“She'll be drugged again.”

Clara's breathing stopped.

Daniel looked at her.

“She drugged you.”

“Yes.”

The recording continued.

Nathan:

“You're sick.”

Evelyn:

“No.”

A pause.

“I'm a mother.”

THE SECRET CLAUSE

Cross spoke again.

“There is one problem.”

Evelyn:

“What?”

“The succession clause.”

Richard:

“What about it?”

Cross:

“If Clara signs the emergency directive, the trust won't transfer to Daniel immediately.”

Evelyn:

“Explain.”

“It will remain under Clara's control until a qualifying heir is born.”

Richard's voice became hopeful.

“Then the plan fails.”

Evelyn:

“No.”

Cross:

“The heir has to be directly descended from Clara.”

Evelyn:

“Then Clara will have a child.”

Richard:

“You can't control that.”

Evelyn:

“I don't need to.”

A pause.

“I only need to control the man she marries.”

Clara felt sick.

Daniel stared at her.

The room seemed to become smaller.

Evelyn had been planning Clara's future.

Her marriage.

Her children.

Her life.

Everything.

THE RECORDING BREAKS

Suddenly, the recording became distorted.

Static filled the room.

Then—

a scream.

Clara's own scream.

Daniel stepped backward.

“What happened?”

Jonathan looked at the equipment.

“Someone corrupted the file.”

The screen flashed.

FILE INTERRUPTION — 00:47:13

Then silence.

Clara stared.

“There's a missing section.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Forty-seven minutes.”

“What was in it?”

“We don't know.”

Daniel looked at the speaker.

“Mother?”

No answer.

Then the recording resumed.

Evelyn's voice:

“If Clara discovers the truth…”

Cross:

“She'll fight.”

Evelyn:

“She always does.”

Cross:

“Then what?”

Evelyn:

“Give her someone to hate.”

Clara froze.

Victoria.

Daniel looked at her.

“Victoria.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn continued:

“She will blame Victoria.”

Richard:

“And while she's distracted?”

Evelyn:

“We take the trust.”

VICTORIA'S ROLE

The recording changed.

Victoria's younger voice appeared.

She was crying.

“I don't want to do this.”

Evelyn:

“Your brother dies if you refuse.”

Victoria:

“You promised.”

“I promised he would live.”

“Please.”

“Then obey.”

Victoria began sobbing.

“I have to marry Daniel?”

“No.”

“What?”

“You don't have to marry him.”

Evelyn's voice became almost gentle.

“You only have to make him believe you love him.”

Victoria:

“And Clara?”

“Make Daniel believe Clara is jealous of you.”

Victoria:

“What if she finds out?”

Evelyn:

“She won't.”

Victoria:

“What if she does?”

A pause.

“Then we destroy her.”

THE NIGHT CLARA DISCOVERED THE TRUTH

The recording jumped again.

A date appeared.

Three years earlier.

Clara recognized it immediately.

The night she had first confronted Daniel about Victoria.

Her younger voice:

“Daniel, something is wrong.”

Daniel:

“What?”

“The money.”

Daniel:

“I told you. It's nothing.”

“You're lying.”

Daniel:

“No.”

“You know about Victoria's family.”

Silence.

Then Daniel's voice:

“I promised her.”

Clara closed her eyes.

She remembered that conversation.

She had believed her brother was simply defending Victoria.

Now she knew.

The recording continued.

Clara:

“You trust her more than me.”

Daniel:

“No.”

“You're protecting her.”

“Yes.”

The younger Clara's voice broke.

“Why?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Then—

Victoria entered the room.

“Because I need him.”

Clara's eyes opened.

That sentence had never been part of her memory.

Daniel stared at the speaker.

“I don't remember her saying that.”

Clara looked at him.

“Because you weren't supposed to.”

The recording continued.

Victoria whispered:

“I can't keep doing this.”

Daniel:

“Doing what?”

Victoria:

“Lying to you.”

Daniel:

“About what?”

Victoria:

“Everything.”

Then Evelyn's voice came through the phone.

“Victoria.”

Victoria froze.

Evelyn:

“Leave.”

Victoria:

“But—”

“Now.”

The recording ended.

THE WOMAN WHO WAS WATCHING

Clara stared at the screen.

“She knew.”

Jonathan nodded.

“She knew everything.”

Daniel looked devastated.

“Victoria tried to tell me.”

“Yes.”

“And I didn't listen.”

“No.”

“I thought she was manipulating me.”

“She was.”

“But she was also trapped.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at Clara.

“I betrayed you for someone who didn't even want to betray you.”

Clara said nothing.

Because that was the cruelest part.

Victoria had been guilty.

But she had also been a victim.

And Evelyn had designed the entire system so that victims would destroy other victims.

THE FINAL MINUTES

The recording resumed.

Richard's voice.

“If you continue, Clara will eventually find out.”

Evelyn:

“She won't.”

“She is smarter than you think.”

“I know.”

“Then why aren't you afraid?”

“Because I know what she values.”

“What?”

“Family.”

Richard became silent.

Evelyn continued:

“She will always choose family.”

Richard:

“And you will use that against her.”

“Yes.”

“Even Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“He is your son.”

Evelyn's voice became cold.

“Children are tools when they are raised correctly.”

Clara felt tears slide down her face.

Daniel looked shattered.

Their mother had never viewed them as children.

Only pieces.

Assets.

Weapons.

THE LAST SECRET

The recording reached its final minute.

Evelyn was speaking to someone else.

A man.

Clara didn't recognize his voice.

“You promised the heir would be Daniel.”

The man replied:

“That was before Clara became a problem.”

Evelyn:

“Then remove her.”

The man:

“Permanently?”

Evelyn:

“No.”

A pause.

“I want her alive.”

“Why?”

“Because she has something we need.”

“What?”

Evelyn whispered:

“The original trust.”

The man laughed.

“You mean the one she doesn't know she possesses?”

“Yes.”

Clara froze.

“What?”

Jonathan looked at her.

“What did she say?”

Clara stared at the speaker.

“She said I possess the original trust.”

Daniel frowned.

“How?”

“I don't know.”

The recording continued.

The mysterious man asked:

“Does Clara know where it is?”

Evelyn answered:

“No.”

“Then why keep her alive?”

“Because when she discovers where it is…”

A pause.

“She will lead us straight to it.”

The recording ended.

THE OBJECT IN CLARA'S HAND

The room fell silent.

Clara looked down.

Something felt strange inside her coat pocket.

She reached inside.

Her fingers touched metal.

She pulled out a small object.

An old key.

She stared at it.

“I've had this for years.”

Daniel looked at it.

“What is it?”

“I don't know.”

Jonathan stepped closer.

He saw the symbol engraved on it.

His expression changed.

“That's not a key.”

Clara looked at him.

“Then what is it?”

Jonathan whispered:

“It's a trust seal.”

Daniel stared.

“What does it open?”

Jonathan looked at Clara.

“The original Vance vault.”

Clara's heart stopped.

“Where?”

Jonathan shook his head.

“No one knows.”

Clara turned the key over.

A number was engraved on the back.

17.

Daniel whispered:

“Seventeen.”

Clara looked at him.

“What?”

“The night I signed the waiver.”

Jonathan nodded.

“The same night.”

Clara's mind raced.

The drugging.

The signature.

The succession clause.

The missing millions.

The forged documents.

The recording.

Everything led back to one night.

Twelve years ago.

The night the Vance family began to fall apart.

And now Clara finally understood why Evelyn had been so determined to control her.

Clara wasn't merely the trustee.

She wasn't merely the obstacle.

She was the only person who had unknowingly carried the key to the family's greatest secret for twelve years.

Then the hidden speaker clicked one final time.

Evelyn's voice returned.

“You finally remembered, Clara.”

Clara looked up.

“How are you doing this?”

Evelyn laughed softly.

“Because I never stopped watching you.”

Clara's blood ran cold.

Then Evelyn said:

“Look behind you.”

Clara turned.

A section of the wall had opened.

Behind it was a small room.

Inside stood an old wooden box.

On the lid was the Vance family crest.

And beneath it—

a handwritten sentence.

PROPERTY OF THE TRUE HEIR.

Daniel stepped beside Clara.

“Open it.”

Clara looked at the key.

Then at the box.

For twelve years, someone had been waiting for this moment.

She inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

The lid slowly opened.

Inside was a single envelope.

And on the front, written in her father's handwriting, were five words:

CLARA, TRUST YOUR BROTHER.

Clara looked at Daniel.

For the first time in twelve years—

May you like

she didn't know whether those words were a warning…

or a trap.
