CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN BEHIND VICTORIA

CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN BEHIND VICTORIA
Victoria stared at the message for nearly a minute.
MAKE CLARA DISAPPEAR.
Her fingers trembled.
She read it again.
Then again.
The words did not change.
She had expected threats.
She had expected instructions.
She had even expected violence.
But not this.
Not Clara.
Victoria knew Clara was dangerous.
She knew Clara had uncovered the trust.
She knew Clara had discovered the missing millions.
But Clara was not supposed to die.
At least—
that had never been part of the original plan.
Victoria typed quickly.
I won't hurt her.
The reply arrived almost immediately.
YOU DON'T HAVE A CHOICE.
Victoria swallowed.
Another message appeared.
YOU NEVER DID.
Then a photograph arrived.
Victoria's blood ran cold.
It showed her younger brother.
Alive.
Sitting in a chair.
His face was thinner than she remembered.
But it was him.
Eight years after his disappearance.
Eight years after Victoria had been told he was dead.
He looked directly at the camera.
And beside him stood a woman.
An elegant woman in a black dress.
Victoria knew her.
Everyone in the Vance family knew her.
But no one had ever suspected her.
Evelyn Vance.
Daniel and Clara's mother.
THE WOMAN IN BLACK
Victoria dropped the phone.
“No…”
Her breathing became shallow.
She had been told Evelyn was dead.
Everyone had.
The funeral had happened twelve years ago.
The family had mourned her.
The newspapers had published photographs.
Her death had become part of Vance family history.
But the woman in the photograph was unmistakable.
Older.
Colder.
Still beautiful.
Still alive.
Victoria picked up the phone.
She called the number.
It rang once.
Then connected.
No greeting.
Victoria whispered:
“You're alive.”
A calm voice answered.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because dead women are rarely questioned.”
Victoria's hands shook.
“You lied to me.”
“No.”
“You told me my brother was being held by people you couldn't control.”
“I told you your brother was being held.”
“You were holding him.”
A pause.
Then Evelyn said:
“There's a difference between holding someone and keeping them alive.”
Victoria felt sick.
“You used me.”
“Yes.”
The honesty was almost more terrifying than a lie.
Victoria whispered:
“You made me destroy Daniel's life.”
“No.”
Evelyn's voice remained calm.
“You destroyed Daniel's life because you wanted something.”
“I wanted my brother.”
“And I gave you a reason to keep obeying.”
Victoria closed her eyes.
“What do you want?”
“The same thing I've always wanted.”
“The trust?”
“No.”
“The money?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Evelyn answered:
“Control.”
THE FIRST MEETING
Victoria remembered their first meeting.
Three years earlier.
She had been desperate.
Her brother had disappeared.
Her family business was drowning in debt.
Her father had died.
Her mother was sick.
Then Evelyn had appeared.
Not as Evelyn Vance.
As a woman named Mrs. Black.
She had approached Victoria in a private restaurant.
“You want your brother back.”
Victoria had stared at her.
“Who are you?”
“Someone who can help.”
“What do you want?”
“Daniel.”
Victoria had laughed.
“You want me to seduce him?”
“I want you to make him trust you.”
“And then?”
“Then you will do exactly what I tell you.”
Victoria had refused.
Until the first photograph arrived.
Her brother.
Alive.
That was the beginning.
For three years, Victoria had followed instructions.
She had entered Daniel's life.
She had encouraged his distrust of Clara.
She had attended family events.
She had gathered information.
She had moved money.
She had signed documents.
She had lied.
And every time she considered stopping—
another photograph appeared.
Another reminder.
Another threat.
She had believed Evelyn was merely helping the people behind the operation.
She had never realized—
Evelyn was the operation.
THE HIDDEN OFFICE
Across the city, Evelyn sat in a private office.
There were no family photographs.
No decorations.
Only files.
Hundreds of them.
Each labeled with a name.
CLARA VANCE.
DANIEL VANCE.
VICTORIA ROSS.
STEPHEN VANCE.
JONATHAN REED.
Evelyn opened Clara's file.
Inside were photographs taken over the last three years.
Clara entering the trust office.
Clara leaving the bank.
Clara meeting investigators.
Clara talking to Daniel.
Even photographs of Clara sleeping inside her apartment.
Evelyn studied the newest image.
Clara and Daniel standing together.
Their hands clasped.
“They've reconciled.”
A man standing behind Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.”
“That complicates things.”
“What should we do?”
Evelyn closed the file.
“Remove Daniel from the board.”
“And Clara?”
Evelyn smiled.
“Make her believe Daniel betrayed her again.”
The man hesitated.
“And Victoria?”
Evelyn's expression became cold.
“She has become useless.”
“Should we eliminate her?”
Evelyn looked up.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because frightened people are more useful than dead ones.”
THE TRUTH ABOUT THE TRUST
Meanwhile, Clara and Daniel were inside the Vance archive.
They had spent six hours searching.
They found hundreds of documents.
None explained the missing millions.
None explained Evelyn.
Until Daniel found a sealed envelope.
His name was written on it.
He opened it.
Inside was a single letter.
His mother's handwriting.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, then Clara has discovered the truth.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Clara leaned closer.
He continued.
You will probably hate me.
You should.
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
But before you judge me, understand this: the trust was never created to make our family rich.
It was created to keep one person from controlling everything.
Clara whispered:
“Who?”
Daniel continued reading.
Your father wanted absolute control.
I stopped him.
But I could not destroy his power completely.
So I created the trust.
Clara stared.
“Your mother created it.”
Daniel nodded.
The letter continued.
Clara was chosen because she was the only person your father could not manipulate.
Daniel looked at his sister.
Clara's expression changed.
The letter went on.
But there was another problem.
You, Daniel.
Daniel's hands trembled.
Your father believed you would eventually choose power over family.
Clara looked at him.
Daniel swallowed.
I didn't believe him.
I believed you would choose love.
Daniel froze.
Then came the sentence that broke him.
I was wrong about the person you would love.
Silence.
Daniel whispered:
“She knew about Victoria.”
Clara nodded.
“Apparently.”
THE REAL PURPOSE OF VICTORIA
The next page explained everything.
Victoria was never supposed to inherit.
She was never supposed to control the trust.
She was never even supposed to marry Daniel.
Her purpose was simple.
She was supposed to become the person Daniel trusted more than his sister.
Then, once Daniel had chosen Victoria over Clara—
the trust's protective clause would activate.
Daniel would lose access.
Victoria would become the legal intermediary.
And the money could be moved.
Clara stared at the document.
“So the entire relationship was engineered.”
Daniel looked devastated.
“Yes.”
“You were selected.”
“Yes.”
“Victoria was selected.”
“Yes.”
“And I was the obstacle.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.”
Clara slowly sat down.
For years, she had thought she was simply fighting a gold-digger.
But she had never understood the scale.
This wasn't about jealousy.
It wasn't about marriage.
It wasn't even primarily about money.
It was about control of the Vance family.
And someone had been planning it for years.
VICTORIA'S LAST CHANCE
Victoria arrived at the Vance estate shortly after midnight.
She entered through the servants' entrance.
She found Clara in the library.
Clara looked up.
“You came.”
Victoria nodded.
“I need to tell you something.”
“About Evelyn?”
Victoria froze.
“You know?”
“Yes.”
Victoria looked at Daniel.
Then back at Clara.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
Victoria began crying.
“She has my brother.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“Victoria.”
“I swear.”
Clara watched her.
“You've been working for her for three years.”
“Yes.”
“You helped move the money.”
“Yes.”
“You manipulated Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“Why should I believe you now?”
Victoria wiped her tears.
“Because she's going to kill you.”
Daniel stiffened.
Clara remained calm.
“She told you that?”
“No.”
“Then how do you know?”
Victoria pulled out her phone.
She showed them the photograph.
Clara stared at Evelyn.
Alive.
Standing beside Victoria's brother.
Daniel's face went white.
“Our mother.”
Victoria nodded.
“She is behind everything.”
THE WOMAN WHO NEVER DIED
Daniel sat down.
“My mother died.”
Victoria shook her head.
“She disappeared.”
Clara looked at the photograph.
“Why would she fake her death?”
Victoria answered:
“To control the family from the shadows.”
Clara stared.
“But why?”
Victoria hesitated.
“Because your father wasn't the real threat.”
Daniel looked up.
“Who was?”
Victoria whispered:
“Your grandfather.”
Silence.
Clara frowned.
“My grandfather died twenty years ago.”
“Not according to Evelyn.”
“What does that mean?”
Victoria shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“Then what does she want?”
Victoria looked at them.
“She wants the original Vance trust.”
Clara's expression changed.
“Why?”
“Because the trust contains something worth more than money.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
Victoria lowered her voice.
“The original ownership records of the Vance empire.”
Clara froze.
“The real ownership.”
Victoria nodded.
“Your family doesn't own the empire.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“Your family only controls it.”
Clara's mind raced.
“Who owns it?”
Victoria whispered:
“Someone outside the family.”
Daniel stood.
“Who?”
Victoria looked terrified.
“Evelyn.”
THE WOMAN BEHIND THE WOMAN
Clara shook her head.
“That doesn't make sense.”
Victoria reached into her purse.
She pulled out a document.
“I stole this from Evelyn.”
Clara opened it.
The document was old.
Very old.
Older than the trust.
Older than Daniel's birth.
At the bottom was a name.
THE VANCE FOUNDATION — ORIGINAL BENEFICIARY
Clara read it twice.
Then looked at Victoria.
“This isn't Evelyn's signature.”
“No.”
“Whose is it?”
Victoria hesitated.
“Her mother's.”
Clara's eyes widened.
“Evelyn's mother?”
Victoria nodded.
“She built the original structure.”
Daniel stared at the document.
“Then Evelyn isn't the mastermind.”
Clara looked up.
“What?”
Victoria's voice dropped.
“She's following someone too.”
Silence.
Clara's heart began racing.
“Who?”
Victoria looked toward the dark window.
“I never met her.”
“Her?”
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
Victoria swallowed.
“Evelyn calls her…”
She paused.
“The Founder.”
THE CALL
The lights suddenly went out.
Daniel stood.
“Stay behind me.”
A phone began ringing.
Not Clara's.
Not Daniel's.
Victoria's.
She stared at the screen.
The caller ID displayed:
MOTHER
Victoria answered.
No one spoke.
Then Evelyn's voice came through.
“You should never have gone to Clara.”
Victoria's face went white.
“You lied to me.”
“I protected you.”
“You used my brother.”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed my life.”
“Yes.”
Victoria's voice broke.
“Why?”
Evelyn answered calmly:
“Because your life was the only thing I needed to sacrifice.”
Victoria closed her eyes.
Then Evelyn said:
“And now I need another sacrifice.”
Clara looked at Victoria.
“Who?”
Evelyn answered before Victoria could.
“Daniel.”
The call ended.
A second later—
the entire Vance estate lost power.
Then came the sound of breaking glass downstairs.
Daniel grabbed Clara's arm.
“We need to move.”
Clara nodded.
Victoria stood frozen.
“What is happening?”
Clara looked at her.
“Your employer just declared war.”
“No.”
Victoria shook her head.
“She isn't my employer.”
“Then what is she?”
Victoria stared into the darkness.
“She's the woman who owns my brother.”
A gunshot echoed through the mansion.
Daniel pulled Clara behind the wall.
Another shot.
Then another.
And somewhere downstairs, a woman's voice calmly issued an order:
“Take Clara alive.”
A pause.
“Daniel doesn't matter.”
Victoria looked at Clara.
Her face was filled with horror.
“She changed the plan.”
Clara whispered:
“Why?”
Victoria answered:
“Because she no longer needs the trust.”
Clara stared at her.
“Then what does she need?”
Victoria looked toward Daniel.
“The heir.”
Daniel froze.
“What heir?”
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
“You.”
At that exact moment, a hidden door behind the library shelves opened.
A man stepped into the room.
Clara recognized him immediately.
Jonathan Reed.
He raised his hands.
“Don't shoot.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You're working for Evelyn.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why are you here?”
Jonathan looked at Clara.
“Because Evelyn isn't coming for the trust.”
He glanced toward Daniel.
“She is coming for the bloodline.”
Clara's face went pale.
Jonathan's voice dropped.
“And Daniel isn't the heir.”
Silence.
May you like
He looked directly at Clara.
“You are.”
